By and large, they did a terrific job. Tony, the sales person, gave us a very thorough and detailed presentation, perhaps a bit too detailed. Frankly, I was exhausted afterwards, and we had to dig through the literature to kind of put it all together in a way that we understood. The price was a bit higher than the other vendor we had come over, but Cal Vintage has a sterling reputation and Tony didn't act like a salesman, thank goodness. He was pretty patient and explained a lot of things patiently. Work began right on schedule, and ended sooner than they estimated. Tear off of the old roof (about 2,000 sq/ft took less than two hours. They provided a detailed prep sheet with instructions like taking pictures off of the walls and covering certain things. They were right on for this. The tear off and then prep of the subroof is very messy, noisy and shakes the house occasionally. Prep of the subroof involved repairs to old and soft spots, taking a bit over a day. We used a reflective material instead of tarpaper for a subroof material, and replaced vents and other fenestrations with a ridge vent, which I believe makes the roof a bit tighter and cooler due to better venting. When this was done, the shingling and flashing was done in short order. Prior to the roofing going on, a subcontractor came in to replace the gutters and downspouts. They were quick and efficient, and the work is of good quality, steel seamless gutters. I'm not crazy about one downspout exit, but the installer told me that it couldn't be done in the way I asked, and it wasn't a biggie, but frankly I think that he just didn't want to make up a new spout. There's another drain where just a nipple goes from one gutter down to the other, and there is only an eighth of an inch clearance. This is too tight-- any leaves will clog this instantly and I may trim this myself. I have a couple of concerns with Cal Vintage-- One, we wanted to also have our sun porch roof (corrugated fiberglass) replaced as well, but Tony didn't seem interested, telling us to do it later as a separate job. We wanted two solar tubes, which they advertise in their solicitation, but they referred us to a third party (who did a great job!) Also, Tony told me that they were going to work with our pending solar contractor to have Cal Vintage install the standoffs for the solar panels. They told me that if they did it rather than the solar people, it would keep the warranty intact, that they had worked with the solar people before, and no problem. However, they didn't install the stand offs, and now the story is that the solar people will do this and make the roof warranty whole. I have this in writing, and I know it to be okay, but I don't like the way that the installation method changed without letting me know. Secondly, though Cal Vintage did do active cleanup, I'm still finding roofing nails and tarpaper fragments in the lawn and on our deck, and I'm doing my own magnet drag again through the lawn. I've found four pieces of rather scary and jagged pieces of steel from trimming the gutter install, and I've found enough debris in the new gutters that I need to clean them before the rainy season. It's not bad, but not quite the spotless cleanup that was inferred during the sales process. During the work, the work area around the dumpster and ladders was always neat and clean, and when they quit for the day, they straightened up the work area/dumpster, keeping supplies and recyclable debris neatly stacked and out of the way. Having griped a bit, I'm pretty pleased with the work overall. Workmanship is good, quality materials, all of the workers seemed to know their jobs, and the project manager both visited the site several times and was available by phone. We'll work through the issues with debris in the gutters, because in my area, screens are required, and I'll probably have Cal Vintage do the install, since I can't find enough time. I hope that I won't live long enough to need another roof on this house, but if I needed one, I would certainly use these guys again.

Response from Cal-Vintage Roofing Co Inc
[member name removed]: We want to thank you for choosing Cal-Vintage Roofing to install your roofing system. Our staff, and roofing crew enjoyed working with you through the entire process and we want you to be satisfied with your new roof now and years to come. Customer satisfaction is our top priority and we wanted to address some of your concerns. The downspout you were referring to …We were unable to install the downspout from one gutter to another because the two roof areas in question were offset and there was not enough room to install one. Therefore, we put a drop outlet onto the flat roof to drain into the lower gutter, but we still need to cut the outlet so that there is enough room for water to flow. We are also going to be installing gutter screens as well. The sun porch that you wanted roofed with corrugated fiberglass is a product we do not install and your estimator was not aware of that. And since there was one solar tube in question, we felt it was best for you to deal directly with the solar tube contractor since that is their field of expertise and we trust and use them exclusively. In regards to the stand offs for the solar panels. Our Operations Manager, Mike Reynolds went through the procedure we normally do by contacting Solar City to coordinate the installation of the stand offs for the installation of solar panels. After the roof installation , the typical application is the solar company locates the stand offs at time of tear off, then Cal-Vintage Roofing installs the roof. The solar company follows with the installation of their system. During the phone conversation with Solar City, in the attempt to schedule the standoff locations, our Operations Manager was informed that the policy of the solar company is to complete the solar system after the roof is completed. They also informed him that the solar company will warrant their installation even after the roof was installed. And we try our best to clean all debris from the lawn, bushes, gutters and all surrounding areas of the home. Unfortunately, some debris gets missed. The Cal-Vintage team is dedicated to deliver the highest quality performance of roofing services and ensure that we always reflect the highest standards for excellence, customer service and efficiency. We thank you again for choosing us to serve you for your roofing needs and if we can be of any service to you now or in the future, please do not hesitate to contact us. Lisa Perry, President/Office Manager

Cal-Vantage scheduled the roofing job for July 11. I had plenty of time to arrange financing. The workers arrived on time at 8 am to begin the tear-off process. They were efficient and cleaned up all the debris. The roofers arrived shortly after and began the process of evaluating how much new materials were needed. They were prompt in ordering new materials and putting them up before placing the felt and shingles. I also made a change in the color of the shingles and they were able to accommodate my request. All the work was completed by July 12. The roof is beautiful and has a lifetime warranty. I am very pleased with their work.
Description of Work: The estimate was the highest of the three companies I chose. They replaced a roof on our duplex.

They did everything they said they were going to do, they were wonderful. They were very meticulous about explaining everything, they explained why they did this and why they did that, they explained who was going to come out and do what, and it was exactly the way they said it was going to be done. I would use them again and I would recommend them to people.

I contacted Cal-Vintage roofing back in late April to make an appointment for an estimate for a tube skylight for our condo. Robin came out and gave us a straight forward estimate. He was ready to work with us and our HOA because we had to submit an architectural change request and we suspected we might miss the May meeting, which we did. After getting approval, I called to schedule the installation. It took a couple of days to connect back with Robin, mostly because of our odd work schedule. We were given a time frame of 8-10 am for the installation, and the two workers arrived at 9 a.m. They covered the floor to protect it, and had the job done by noon. They cleaned up the installation debris. They were willing to take a check for payment then or I could wait for a bill. Although I sent a payment with the installers, I like this option. We are very happy with the skylight, and if we choose to add another one, we will definitely call them back to do the work.

They explained an awful lot of stuff for me and they had a showroom too. The sales person came to my house and he had a lot of information with him so he could answer my questions well. They answered all my questions right there on the spot. They were on time. The guy that came was nicely dressed and answered questions well and spoke English well. They gave me a quote with a couple of different quotes, a high one and a low one in detail.

It took a couple calls to get someone out to inspect the roof for the bid, but this was due to illness and they made an extra effort to get someone out on our time frame so their bid could be considered with the others. They gave a thorough presentation of their bid and provided a lot of information. I would use them again for a roofing bid, although I do not expect to need one.
Description of Work: My neighbor and I got estimates from Cal Vintage for both our houses. It was one of 5 bids. In the end we went with another company because their price was lower on comparable quality and materials, but felt this was a quality company and ranked as one of the finalists. The evaluation and bid were the most thorough we received.

Work done on time and as promised.
Description of Work: We have two dormer windows upstairs that have a flat roof in front of each that is approximately 4X10. They require a flat roof solution because there is very little slope in these areas. CV Roofing used a membrane to seal the area and tie it into the existing comp roofing and siding. In addition they replaced the existing wood shingles on the vertical sides of the areas with wood siding.

I got an initial quote from Cal Vintage roofing almost two months previous to the repair being done (it took me a while to actually get a third roofing company to come out and give me a quote, so that held me up). Cal Vintage was the middle bid, but they offered a one year warranty on their repair work, whereas the top price bidder specifically stated that repair work was not warrantied. Third bidder quoted a ridiculously low price, leading me to believe that they would just slap some Henry's or tar on a seam and call it a repair. When I was finally ready to do the repair, Cal Vintage honored their qote from two months previous. They had great communication. On day that repair was supposed to happen, I got a call early in the morning saying that their repair person had a personal emergency come up. I was glad for the early call, and we re-scheduled for the next day. I knew there would be some dry rot, and sure enough, as they opened up the roof they found extensive repairs were needed. Each step of the way they showed me the problems, and got approval for the additional work. They even had a manager come out at one point when the dry rot turned out to be a lot more extensive than they originally estimated (before they opened up the roof). They were very professional, and did a great job. I appreciate that they offer a warranty on their work, which means the roof will get to go through a full rainy season so that any problems can be found. I highly recommend them.
Description of Work: Roof leak repaired where a flat roof joins an angled roof. Extensive dry rot was found and repaired. New plywood, shingles, and other roofing material was used to fix leak. Cal Vintage Roofing consulted me and showed me additional repairs needed each step of the way (two additional work orders were necessary as more dry rot was discovered). Quotes for additional work were provided and approved before work was done. One year repair warranty was part of the quote, which was a major selling point for me.

I phoned the company to set up a date for a re-roof estimate. The appointment made was very timely - about a week from the date of the call. Two days before the meeting with the sales person, an individual stopped by to take measurements and photos of the half-plex/half-plex roof. A packet was also left for me to review - 8 to 10 brochures from Owens-Corning, Certainteed and GAF (I think!) displaying their range of roofing materials that are available. Sales person Tony came on time for the appointment. He carried in many items for a presentation. Tony began the presentation which consisted of numerous 'story boards.' I interrupted the presentation twice: I have a short attention span and was more interested in a bottom-line price for a basic re-roof job on my place. Tony finally 'indulged' me and presented that paper that broke down the roof-top measurements and pricings. [Tony was cordial throughout. He maintained a good attitude and good sense of humor.] I declined to have Cal Vintage re-roof my place because the cost exceeded my budget by several hundred dollars. OBSERVATIONS: Consider that I do not live in a mansion or a several-hundred-thousand-dollar house .... but that I live in a common, run-of-the-mill half-plex .... and that my goal is to have a new roof in place that will withstand the weather and protect my home for 20 or more years from now ..... basic stuff There were too many 'hoops' to go through just to get an estimate .... from the numerous brochures, the too numerous roofing materials to choose from (most of which were high-end to very-high-end), the lengthy presentation just to get to the bottom line. Cal Vintage is obviously doing many things right, or else they would not be as successful as they are. When I get my mansion on the hillside, I would not hesitate to utilize their services ............... 'nuff said!

Tear-off crew arrived on time and completed the removal and take-away of the old wood shake roof in about 3 hours. Installation crew arrived the same day to start preparing the decking. Roof was completed 3 days later. Every aspect of the job seemed to be scheduled perfectly with no time wasted. Great job overall. Just a couple of nitpicks. The tear-off crew asked me to open the garage door so they could blow the debris off the floor to the outside where it was picked up for takeaway. In doing so, all the plastic sheeting I put up to keep the falling roof debris out of my garage-stored possessions was tossed and pulled away from where I had taped it. I had to completely clean the garage myself later, which was an all day job. I should have said no to opening the door. There are more nails poking through the underside of the eaves than I expected, some creating good sized splits in the wood. That said, after 3 rainy seasons there has been no issues so far. Roof is a 50-year composition.

The final appearance is good, but, of course, there is no way for us to evaluate how well the roof will do in the future. We selected Cal Vintage based on the size of their company and the belief and hope that they will be in business 10, 20 or 30 years from now. In the end, that is the most difficult part of the decision for who to select to put on a roof: the company's likelihood of being around to honor the guarantee many years or decades after installation. They provided the most detailed estimate of the three companies we contacted. Also, we wanted a smooth face on the gutters and they worked with the third party gutter installation company to provide that. The entire job took two days to tear off the old roofing, make dry rot repairs and install the new roof. The only snag was the installation of the tube skylights didn't happen until a week later. I was under the impression that Cal Vintage employees would do that work, but it was a third party contractor who failed to plan the purchase of the materials. But everything appears to have been done well and done right and, as of this point in time, I am very pleased with the project.
Description of Work: Cal Vintage Roofing coordinated the replacement of our 2,700 square foot roof including securing the city building permit, the tear off of two layers of asphalt shingles, dry rot repairs in eight places, adding two additional soffit vents, installation of tube skylights and new gutters.

Mostly it went very well. The tile ridge board was poorly nailed from original construction and actually fell over exposing about 12 foot of felt paper. There were also several broken tiles and exposed hip roof areas. We were in the middle of the rainy season and was a two week wait for the roofer. I moved tile and applied some foil tape to a couple of areas to prevent damage during a terrible storm the next week. The following week we received a call informing us the man would be there on Monday and arrived as expected. He was very professional and called before he came both days. He left the property clean. When the work was completed the second day, I asked about the broken tiles. I was informed that, oh by the way, I repaired them and did not replace them. I was not happy, because that was not as agreed and I was left out of the decision. I had been promised the tiles were available and they would be replaced. I called the office the next day and left a message. No return call. The following day called early and spoke with the Operation Manager. I wanted the tiles as promised in the bid. I was told no problem they are available and will schedule to come out and replace next week. They showed up as promised with brown tiles (instead of Terra Cotta) and a can of spray paint. I have not been up on the roof to see how they turned out, but so far, no leaks.
Description of Work: Removed over 115 ft of hip and ridge tile. Cleaned the tiles under the hip and ridge. and apply asphalt primer to the field tiles. Applied foil face flash band adhesive tape to both sides of the hip and ridge tile board. Spray painted the foil Terra Cotta to hide the foil and reinstalled tile. They gave me a one year leak free warranty for the entire roof. They also were to replace 4 broken tiles with new matching tiles and install rubber collars around all pipe stacks.

The salesman Tony came to my house and made his sales presentation which is detailed and educational. His spec sheet is also detailed. Everything is written down just like it should be so you know exactly what you are purchasing. Compared with other roofers I interviewed, this company was light years ahead of the other guys in terms of professionalism and customer service. Once I selected them, the entire process went off without a hitch. The job was completed very quickly without disturbance to neighbors. They cleaned up well. Tony helped me choose the roof color and the result is aesthetically excellent. The roof looks great. It's only 3 months old, so truly only time will tell if the roof does its job, but I have every confidence that it will.

Installation was very quick. A single installer removed the old asphalt roofing and installed a TPO membrane. It has been in place for one month, with 6 inches of rain, and zero problems. I think the trick was running the TPO up and under the surrounding asphalt shingles.
