Badly! The unlicensed "technician" botched the shower repair, & failed to clear the drains. We had to call in another plumber to make the repairs. Do not use O'Connell. Paul Guzman at O'Connell plumbing, phoned about my reviews on Angie's List & Yelp & refunded $800, half of the $1600 for the work not done. We used a another plumber to complete the work to our satisfaction.
Description of Work: He surveyed our system & tried to repair the leaky upstairs shower & clear the kitchen sink drain. He also wanted to replace one of the water heaters at an exorbitant price.

Now, I get the power of Angie's List -- the visibility of our experience with a service provider clearly led to a proactive effort to rectify the situation. Our membership paid for itself many times over! While O'Connell Plumbing is still an expensive option, they proved themselves more responsive and professional than we initially thought. Thank you for stepping up!
Description of Work: This is the sequel to my earlier post about out recent experience with O'Connell Plumbing. To our surprise and delight, O'Connell Plumbing management called us about our negative review. They reviewed the invoices and determined that we had been billed incorrectly. They issued us a credit of about $370 back to our credit card!

I will not use them. They are a big company in Sacramento. They are bait and switch type of company. They quote me one price over the phone. Then they come out and they say it’s going to be 2 or 3 times what they told. It didn’t just happen once because I had something weird going on. Everybody I talked to said that is how they did. They are too expensive. The final price is never close to the original price quoted over the phone. I understand that sometimes when they get here and see what they are really dealing with there could be a more serious issue. Over the phone they just couldn’t tell until they saw it. It seems to be a chronic problem not just with me but everybody else that I have talked to about this company. One plumber who I hired used to work for Bonney Plumbing. I talked to him and he told that he has heard that from everybody. A ring went down the drain and I turned the water off immediately. I didn’t know what tools I needed to unscrew the stuff. He came in and he did that. That’s all he did. He got my ring. It was ridiculous. I watched him do it. A week later I did that myself in 5 minutes. They are trying hard and advertising everywhere. He was able to fix my problem. I used Bonney Plumbing several times and the same thing happened over and over again. They always fixed the problem.

he came out and gave me an estimate of $275.00 to replace two supply lines and L-stops. I told him to go ahead and do it, but I did think that the price was a bit excessive. I had water all over the place and needed it to be fixed, so I did have him go ahead with the repairs. When I tried to call and speak to a manager regarding my bill, I was told that it would take 24 hours just to speak with him.
Description of Work: I called them out to look at a leak under my sink. I had replaced the faucet but one of the supply lines were leaking.

If you are in a jam, up against the wall, desperate or just plain don't know any other plumbing resource, then call Bonney. They are fast, courteous, professional - and outrageously expensive. We called for plumbing help Friday AM and they sent someone out Monday. The plumber was here first thing, diagnosed the problem and wrote up a proposal. It was steep, but he was ready to solve all our plumbing problems, one stop and no more fuss - so I approved it. In less than 90 minutes he had cleared the urinal drain and installed a new kitchen faucet. The faucet is exceptionally ugly, the worst Home Depot model possible. My mistake for accepting his choose A,B or C option. Although he indicated he would have to remove the urinal from the wall to access the drain line, I think he had a change of mind - the drain was rodded through the outlet after all, no removal - about 10 minutes work. The bill was $1260. The (ugly) faucet was a $100 Home Depot special, call it $260 with steep contractor markup. That means his 90 minutes of labor was around $1,000 or $666 per hour. I wouldn't pay a divorce attorney that kind of money, even if I was Gwyneth Paltrow! No complaints about the work or the professionalism - but man that price. As George Bush once said, and quot;Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, ... I won't get fooled again.and quot;

We had a bathtub drain in our rooming house that kept getting stopped up month after month. The plumber fixed the exact problem, found the source of the plug up, as well as providing the proper maintenance instructions, and there have been no re-occurrences of the problem. He charged a very reasonable rate and even checked for what I thought might have caused the problem and ruled that out at no additional charge. Prior to this, I had been going with a local handyman, and the problem kept happening again and again. This professional plumber did everything at less than half the charges I received from the handyman, comparing the fees for just one visit in both cases. I would recommend this company completely! Very satisfied from dispatch to servicemen!
Description of Work: Fixed the exact problem efficiently, quickly, and without embellishment of the job.

Frankly I don't remember the exact date or price but it started with a plugged drain that if I agreed before they started to clear it would be one price and if it turned out to be a big drain in the pipe under the house it would be another price, but if I prepaid a cheaper price up front even if it was just the pipe in my house it would cost me much less if I needed the whole thing done, but that price was twice the price of just unclogging my plugged drain in my sink. I had used them before and like them but this ruse was ridiculous, and I have never used them again.

Jason P, the plumber, showed up the first day to inspect the job-did a test to show the re-circulator (14 years old) was not working---needed a part that had to be ordered and returned to complete the job the next day-left the work area spotless, was very cordial and knowledgable--explained to me the cost options of different hot water re-circulators so I could make an informed decision--job cost what was quoted--was on time both days--very satisfied w/the service...
Description of Work: replaced a section of leaking copper pipe and valves on a water heater and replaced a broken hot water re-circulator on a water heater with a new unit including a timer system-braced the new piping to the wall and insulated the new piping.

I wouldn't use them again. They are a pretty big outfit. He was late showing up, and they advertise you that they give you a price upfront, and that is what it will cost you, but it ended up costing twice as much. I am going to remodel my whole bathroom, so I thought I would get cheap faucets on. I told him to replace the faucet and explained to him, that I would be remodeling the bathroom in the next couple of months. He installed the faucet, and without telling me, he went and replaced all the plumbing underneath the sink. Then he told me why it was necessary, and that is why it ended up costing me twice as much. I let it go, because I am going to remodel anyways.
Description of Work: I used Bonney Plumbing. All I asked him to do was install a faucet installed in my bathroom, because my old faucet handle broke.

Overall, great. - The cost was within the quote - They work quickly, efficiently and cleanly - When we ran into a few hiccups, which always happens, they solved them. I dont expect everything to always go perfectly, but i expect that when there are issues, a professional team will solve quickly. There were two issues which bothered me, but it is the customer service and energy with which the Bonney team solved them that make the difference from B's or C's, to A's. - 1. after the completion of the installation, the team left two holes in walls. Although it didnt make me happy, when i called to let them know, they came out immediately and patched. -2. after completion, i could not get hold of the sales rep to finalize and have the invoice sent. I called the front office when i was to the point of frustration and everything was sent and taken care of in 2 days.

They asked what I wanted and I explained that I simply needed a needed garbage disposer, a 3/4 hp. They refused a quote. They then sen said a tech would be about between 10-1. The tech showed at 230pm and then quoted a ridiculous price. A Sinkerator 3/4 power sells for $180 at Home Depot. They wanted $395 to put one in. So, wasting an entire Saturday....is Bonney's problem.

The inspector came out and told us that we needed a new condenser unit and it would cost upwards of $6k. He said the motor was broken. My husband went online and discovered that the condenser unit appropriate for our house should cost between $600-2,000. We sent Bonney on his way and my husband jumped online to learn about the motor for our unit. He ended up fixing the unit with new parts for less than $100. I will never call Bonney again.

Response from Bonney Plumbing Heating Air & Rooter Service
[member name removed], I can certainly understand why you might be frustrated that your husband can make a repair for less than $100 when our recommendation was for $6,000. If I could get the same products and services for $100 that someone else charged $6,000 for, I would be upset too. But, please understand that the products and services the Bonney technician offered, and what your husband did, were not at all the same. As a consumer, you certainly have the choice to repair your own problems or to hire a professional to meet your needs. For example, if I had a problem with the alternator in my car, I could take my own time to research the alternator, buy a cheap one for less than $100, and take the time to put it in myself. But, if I do it wrong and fry my electrical system, or if it doesn’t work properly, then it is my responsibility, time, and perhaps extra money to get it fixed. Or, I could take my car to a trained, licensed mechanic who knows how to do the job properly and will warranty his work. It will cost me about $600, but I can be assured that the quality mechanic has done a good job and my car will work properly and safely. If there is a problem, or the electrical system is damaged, then the mechanic is responsible for the repair. Now, if I bring my car to the mechanic and it is 15 years old, as your system is, it is likely that he may suggest a new engine or a new car for $6,000 or more. He would talk to me about how my costs of operation are much higher than a new car because of gas mileage and increased repairs. And, if he is a good mechanic, he will also mention the increasing unreliability of my current car that will be relieved with a new car. This is what happened at your home with your air conditioner. You had a bad condenser fan motor. Your husband chose to do the work himself with cheap parts from a department store (according to our notes). However, if you had hired us to do the work, we use highly trained technicians who perform safe and correct repairs the first time. As well, we use quality parts purchased from heating and air distributors that we bring on our trucks to your home. No time is required by you for research, purchase or installation of your part. We do that for you. And now, what if you have a problem with the repair your husband made? Your husband will have to provide the warranty repair, taking even more of his time. As well as your condenser fan motor, we recommended a condenser and coil replacement. This was due to the age of your system and we would have treated you poorly to not make this suggestion. Just like with your car and a mechanic, you have a lot of choices with your heating and air system. Because you have made a choice that is not at all equivalent to our service, I do not believe that a failing grade is reasonable. If the opportunity arises, and you desire the high quality service that Bonney provides, I hope we have the opportunity to assist you in the future. Bill Horbaly HVAC Operations Manager

The company salesman/job supervisor visited my elderly parents, after they called to ask for an estimate. My mother has mild dimentia, and my father is nearly completely blind. They began the work on the say so over the phone, without any signed contract. The salesman told me he and quot;neverand quot; leaves paperwork with the customer, because it is in triplicate, and he wants to check all the boxes after the work is done, and then give a copy to the customer. Long story short, parents believed that the job would be $4000.00, so they let him come do the job. He wanted $6700 at the end - but I advised parents to pay him the $4000 as they were acting in good faith, and there was no contract left with them, and no signature gathered from them at all. Afterward, the owner of the company actually had the nerve to call and complain to me after I left a rather negative (yet honest) review on a different website, and it was so unfair because the salesman had been under some stress with a very sick child... HUH?? Parents were pretty traumatized - they always pay their bills in full and on time, so this was a difficult thing to believe they had been almost scammed. They did very beautiful work. If you have them work for you, please be certain that there is a contract in writing in your hands with a clear final price in place before any work begins.

I signed up for Bonney Plumbing's BAM Plan (which is why the service in Oct was $0). On both the Spring and Winter servicing, the technician found HUGE problems which required immediate and VERY COSTLY repairs. After the Spring service, I asked another company (owned by a family friend) to review the Bonney assessment. He found 1 minor issue which was repaired at a fraction of the cost quoted by the Bonney tech (Bonney quote: $1,700+; second opinion: repaired for $37 + service call). In the Winter servicing, the Bonney tech found all kinds of problems ... OMG, we need to replace our heating system RIGHT NOW! Again, we had a second opinion and was advised that there were no issues with the heater and, in fact, it's working just fine as I type. Bonney's estimate to replace: over $10,000! Think about it: They have to pay for all those commercials somehow! We cancelled the BAM Plan.

Horrible, horrible, horrible. 1 - The guy immediately tried to sell us a service contract. When we said and quot;no thanksand quot; as he was ramping up, he said and quot;Aren't you even going to let me finish?and quot; That was just the start of a highly unprofessional experience with this arrogant young man. He messed up the installation -- you ask how can someone mess up something so simple? Good question! He put the vanity top on uneven, and then tried to convince us it wasn't uneven! Meanwhile he stayed parked in our driveway for about 5 hours on a day we were trying to move things in and out, he had other Bonney employees stopping by and walking in and out of our house just for fun ... they were not helping! We complained to management who sent out a guy the next day to fix the vanity. In the process he CHIPPED it! I'm so done with those people. I would never never never ever use them again. Beware!

UPDATE as of December 2013: We have had good experiences with Bonney in the past, which entailed two major service calls, each costing us about $1500 in products and services. They are prompt, professional, and courteous, and they were the same way on this latest service call. The reason I will never use them again, however, is that on this latest service call, I feel that they tried to cheat me, plain and simple. We had a leaky Insinkerator hot water tank. To replace it, they gave me a quote of $900. Waaaaaaayyyy too much!! I asked what the breakdown of this was. They said that a new tank and dispenser system would cost $450, and the balance was for labor. I asked how long it would take to replace it, and the guy (Dwayne) said it take an hour and a half of labor. $450 for 90 minutes of labor--$300 per hour!! I asked why Bonney would charge $300/hr for labor, and he started rambling on about how expensive it is to run a business--Bonney had trucks, insurance, employees, etc.--and they had to charge this kind of rate to cover their business expenses. I said no way, I'm not paying that kind of money, I'll do it myself. And then Dwayne left. I could tell he was kind of frustrated when I challenged him on these costs, as though he wasn't expecting a semi-smart customer who had done a little homework about what a new Insinkerator costs. So a few days later, I purchased at Lowe's the exact same Insinkerator hot water tank, which included the dispenser on the sink basin, for $300, which included tax ($280 before tax). It was pretty much exactly the same as what we had in terms of capacity and features. So right there I saved $150 over what Bonney was going to charge for the parts alone. (Interestingly, it was cheaper at Lowe's compared to Amazon--go Lowe's!) Here's the other thing: it took me all of 15 minutes to replace the old tank with new one, preparation and cleanup time included. 15 minutes!! All I had to do was remove three hose lines, unmount the old tank, mount the new tank, then re-attach the hose lines. Granted, I didn't replace the dispenser on the sink, which would have taken me longer, because it was working fine and there was no need to (although Dwayne told me that our current dispenser needed to also be replaced because it was and quot;about to fail.and quot; Seriously, how could he tell that?) So here's why I feel like Bonney's tried to cheat me: Dwayne said that the dispenser HAD to be replaced in addition to the tank. Wrong. Just the tank needed replacing, and replacing that took only 15 minutes of amateur (that is, my own) labor. As I see it, Bonney's was trying to massively overcharge me (by $450) for what was really a few minutes of easy labor that a monkey could have done (trust me, I'm part monkey). Second, they were trying to overcharge me $150 on the parts. I get that they need to mark up things a little, but $150 on a $300 part?? I will never trust Bonney's again to quote me a fair price. For this reason, any goodwill I had toward them from previous visits is gone, and I give them an F. IMHO, this is a classic case of a contractor trying to take (massive) advantage of their customers' ignorance and gouge them. Do your homework, price out the parts, figure out how to do some of these things (plenty of YouTube videos instructing how to do a lot of house repairs!). This particular Bonney's repair man, Dwayne, is otherwise a good guy but he was trying to take advantage of my good nature, as well as what he thought was my ignorance. I called his bluff. OLD review from May 2009: These guys are always good. They do good work, are always punctual, and have fair prices (although a tad high--to be expected for doing better-than-average work). They also carry a ton of supplies in their trucks, so chances are they have all the parts needed for any repair; no waiting.
Description of Work: UPDATE as of December 2013: Leaky, sputtering Insinkerator hot water tank. We called Bonney to repair or replace it. OLD review from May 2009: Replaced garage disposal, toilet, sink drain, and added gas-line valve to dryer.

They were very responsive with any calls that I have. I am a regular customer of theirs and I belong to Elsie Club which is a service contract with them and they just do an excellent job. I have been blessed with finding them and using their service. They were very diligent in fixing plumbing work from prior service providers.

They replaced a toilet, hot water line, and they did detective work on some very creative plumbing that was done prior to living in the home. Bonney office staff set and confirmed appointments, crew called ahead to confirm approximate arrival times. Crew was punctual, courteous, and kept us informed all along the way. This was estimated to be a three-day job, but they completed it in two. The finished job works as expected and is professional in appearance. They left the house, side yard, and driveway with no trace of their having done work there -- except, of course, for the new furnaces, compressors, and associated pipes and tubing.

There were highly recommend. Their service was tremendous! They noticed my A/C was making noise and found a crack in the fan. They asked me about the noise. I told them I was hearing a noise and wiped some oil clean but I thought nothing of it. They said I still had four hours of labor on my warranty with the previous company but I told them I did not want to do business with them. They offered to do the work and within a day they had the unit here from Fresno. They completed the work with no problems. He came early and stayed the entire time to ensure it was done properly. He was very considerate and clean looking. He was so pleasant and offered a 15% discount because I was a first time client. I was extremely pleased.

There was a bit of a delay, but I feel as if the work they did was very good. They are very friendly and respectful and even cover their feet with paper shoes. They explain everything clearly and let you know the costs so that there are no surprises.
Description of Work: There were some rubber/plastic pieces inside faucets that had corroded. The provider replaced the faucets in our bath tub.

All I needed was to remove the valve from the water heater and replace it with a cap. Serviceman arrived late. Looked at the job and called for a price. He quoted $275. Since it was a slow leak, I had no choice but to have the work done. Job was completed in under ten minutes. Not a bad wage for ten minutes work. I would never recommend Bonney Plumbing.
