After reading your issue of September 2011 "Blowing Smoke", I initially called Chimney Safety Experts to have them come out and clean and inspect our fireplace.  Our house, a 1956 Mid Century Modern house, had not had it's chimney and fireplace cleaned and since we bought the house in April 2008 and we knew we had some issues with it. An appointment was set for 11/2/2011 and technician Nathanial showed up promptly at the appointed time.  He was very professional and explained what his service was going to entail and laid down clean cloths, inspected and vacuumed the fireplace.  He was very knowledgeable and after getting up on the roof to complete the inspection and clean,  wrote up the report of things that needed to be fixed so we could enjoy the use of our fireplace.  He explained everything very simply and clearly. After receiving the quote for the repairs, I called Monica to schedule an appropriate time for the work to be done.  On 12/12/2011, technicians Thomas and David arrived promptly at 8:30am and began preparing for the work ahead. Of course, this was the first rainy day in Los Angeles, and only half the work could be done.  Even though it was raining, great care with dropcloths was taken by Thomas and David and no mud or mess came inside our house.  At all times, they were courteous and professional even with the rain. At 11:30am, they had done all they could and were going to return the next day to finish the job, weather permitting.  On 12/13/2011, the sun was shining and Thomas and David arrived at 8am to complete the work. Within a short time, they were able to access the roof and complete all necessary exterior work and complete the remaining interior work.  Once done, the process was again fully explained and Thomas made sure we knew how to operate our new damper system.  We also understood we couldn't use the fireplace for at least 10 days so the new "Chamber-Tech 2000" cement could cure.  All of this work came with a 20 year guarantee!  Our fireplace would be ready for use by 12/24/2011.  What a fantastic Christmas present!  From start to finish, Chimney Safety Experts were a pleasure to deal with and wouldn't hesitate recommending them.  They will be company going forward that will be taking care of our chimney!

I spoke to this guy named Larry.

Do you know those people that make you beg to give them your money?  This is one of them.  A few things didn't sit right with me after I spoke with this guy.

First, he made the job sound extremely exaggerated.  I have a chimney leaning away from the house.  He told me that they would have to go in the attic and build a whole structure to support the chimney.  He would also have to put straps and make sure that it didn't move any further.

Second, he made it such a big deal that I was being difficult about an estimate.  Keep in mind that it was the first time he ever mentioned that he should come out and give an estimate.  When I asked him about the cost of an estimate, he was pretty condescending and said "Do me a favor.  When you're ready to do that work, call the office and schedule it with them.  It's $69 for the estimate, $89 to use the camera."  While the estimate price seems fair,  I'm afraid that this estimate will create additional expenses where none exist.  Read below for my reasoning behind that statement.

Third, when I asked him a range, he told me $10,000.  I said OK.  He's like "I'm being sarcastic."  If i needed sarcasm, I would just rent the movie Borat or go to a comedy club.  If you'd prefer not to give me an estimate over the phone, then don't.  If you don't want to do the job, it's fine, but don't belittle my questions and certainly don't come back at me with sarcasm.  What a silly way to do business.

Fourth, when he was telling me about the estimate, he said that most likely the structure of the thing used to attach the chimney to the house already existed in the attic and they could use some of it.  This is when it became a red flag.  If this structure most likely already existed and he could use some of it, why did he suggest in the first part of the conversation that he would have to build a whole new one?  No idea.

I don't trust this company.  If they are going to make up things to inflate the cost and then come at me with sarcasm, it's clear that they are not trustworthy.

Beware.

"I LOVE GOOD CONTROVERSY !!- After a long list of straight "A" 's on Angie's List and getting the Super Service Award two years in a row , the customer's review makes us look Human . The difference between his review and our other reviews is the other reviews are from clients that we actually performed a Service for . The customer is however not one of our Clients. He did call to get a Diagnosis of his chimney over the phone , the technician encouraged him to call our office to set - up an appointment , he insisted on getting specific technical questions answered over the phone . The technician, reminded him again that a Chimney inspection over the phone cannot be done , he kept asking more and more questions about his Chimney . The technician , finally gave him the worse case scenario along with an exaggerated price to highlight and emphasize how this could not be done over the phone . The technician , was attempting at humor so that he would get the point , he did not, he just continued to ask more and more questions about his Chimney . The technician finally insisted that he try another company that may be able to help him better and also encouraged him to call our appointment line if he wanted us to come out to do a proper inspection . The technician felt that the customer wanted a chimney inspection over the phone . His review is just a reflection of again what the outcome of a lot of questions about your chimney without a Qualified Technician coming out to do a proper inspection . We are more than happy to answer basic questions about the Chimney , but specifics and details need to be done on site ."

Update 1/21/12
Will utilize them to repair my chimney. Very professional and customer focused.

Went to a local long existing fire place store and got two well thought of mason references. Hired one and met him and went with him on entire inspection. First and most blatant was we have a damper! Second we have a very tall roof but I reluctantly went to top with him. The top of the chimney had no cracks and was braced to the house and the overhange of the roof extended past chimney. Chimney flashing and area around chimney still well sealed. Cap had never been removed from what we could tell. The fire box had 3 cracked brick and the mortar joints needed repair. The mason came back and ground out the mortar joints and replace the broken bricks for $1000. I am glad I hired someone else and would never work with this company again!
Response from Chimney Safety Experts

"Thank you Member for your feedback . We will definitely back up our inspection 100%, if you can provide us with a report stating that our Technician gave you an incorrect Inspection we will give you a Refund . A Mason's specialty is brick work , whereas a Chimney Contractor covers all aspects of the Chimney , so our Inspections cover all current codes and laws to pass Building Inspections and Home inspections . Masons may not be aware of all the current codes as they apply to the full aspect of the Chimney , there is a 50 point checklist . Regarding the Damper ,when we do repairs on a Chimney we always include a new damper , because we have to remove old dampers that may be code violations to update the Chimney , also the damper has to be removed to physically fit a body into the smoke chamber to do proper repairs. For the purposes of our report it reflects that you don't have a Damper, because we suggest that a new one be installed . Another option , we sent a technician out to do this Inspection , we would like to have the Owner of the Company come out at no-charge to see for himself that we did a faulty Inspection and to be sure of the Condition of your Chimney , also to improve the quality of our Inspectors , in the event that they need correction. The owner of the Company is also offering to pay for your entire repair $1,000.00 , if every aspect of your findings are correct, and our Report was inaccurate . Another offer we have is if you want to have another Chimney Evaluation done by a Company that does not do the work , we will pay for that Inspection if our findings are inflated or exaggerated , we only suggest this as there may be other safety issues or hazards that are not being addressed by simply fixing the firebox . For your own safety , get another qualified licensed chimney inspection .We know we may not be your choice , that is not our concern . Our true concern is that you are safe when you burn fires in your Home . We sincerely offer you 3 different options to reslove this issue . Thank You The Office of Chimney Safety Experts"

My experience with Chimney Safety Experts was really exceptional from start to finish.  We just bought a very old house that needed a new roof, and the roofing companies we contacted told us they couldn't start any work until the chimney was repaired with new flashing installed.  I called CSE in a bit of hurry because I wanted to make sure we got the roof work done before the rainy season started.  They answered the phone and were able to schedule an appointment with Larry at our house on the same day I called.  When I met Larry, he was very friendly and took the time to explain everything that was going on.  He came up with a couple of options of what we could do to repair the chimney.  But the best part was that he really listened to what our situation was, and understanding that none of the options he originally came up with were going to meet our timeline or budget, he came up with an even better option for repair of the chimney.  AND he was able to squeeze us into his schedule within 3 days, which was super important for us.  From there, Larry and his guys took care of all the planning and details to get the work done.  They did all the work on Saturday and Sunday which was amazing.  He also coordinated with our roofer to install the proper chimney flashing as part of the job.  The end result was a truly amazing-looking chimney top, and our roofer was able to start work the following week.  Mission accomplished.

They were awesome and a great price compared to another firm I had gotten an estimate from.  Larry is a super cool guy and speaks to you in plain English about what needs to be done.  His crew were very professional and you can tell from watching them work that they are great craftsmen.  The guy building my firebox was a third generation mason and it was super cool to see how neatly and quickly he worked.  The job was pretty messy but they cleaned up everything.

As I move forward to renovate other parts of my house, I wish all contractors were like Larry.  No nonsense, did what he said he would, communicated clearly and right away.  Also, someone who really cares about his job!   I recommend him without hesitation.

Larry and his crew were very prompt, thorough and explained everything in detail while explaining the various options available (with the pros and cons).  They were very concerned with the cleanliness of their job for which I was grateful.  They came at the time promised and completed the work in one day (even though it required more time than anticipated...not due to their fault).  Unlike other companies I interviewed, they spoke English so the communication was very clear.  I would highly recommend them.

We bought a house and asked them to perform an inspection of the chimney. Recently, we noticed that the cap of the chimney was open so that we asked them to check whether it was left open. The company agreed to do a free check. Later, I was informed that it was not their fault. I am very grateful for their visit and felt really bad that we did not pay for their visit (as my husband was meeting them alone).

Job went well. Two men spent about 5-6 hours, so they're getting about $150-180 per man-hour. The inspector-estimator had pointed out a crack at top of smoke chamber, result of living in earthquake country, which needed re-mortaring all around, but workmen didn't appear to know anything about it and wouldn't have done any re-mortaring on it had I not pointed it out. I called Larry (the estimator) about this problem & left a message for him to call me. He called the workman, but not me. This lack of communication - to the workmen about the crack and failure to call me back are my only notes of dissatisfaction.

I recently purchased a house built in the 40's and knew that the chimney needed some work. I therefore called several companies to get bids for the repairs. Larry Morrison came out and inspected my chimney. I found him to be professional and very knowledgable -- you can tell he's been doing this a long time. After the inspection, I received a follow up email from Monica. While I appreciate the professionalism and follow up, the price was much higher than other quotes received, so I went with another company.

I called for an inspection of my chimney, as it had not been used for the 3 years I owned my house. Greg came out about 2 weeks later to inspect the chimney and provided an estimate for the work needed. His explanation for why the work was needed helped me make the decision to move forward with the necessary repairs. The crew of 2 workers came out 2 weeks later, calling ahead about their arrival time. They worked straight through for 5 hours, keeping the areas in and out of the home clean. The heat reflector was too large for the fireplace, but Mike came back the next day with one that fit. I am very pleased with this company, and will be using them for yearly chimney cleaning.

We loved meeting with Larry, the owner of Chimney Safety Experts. He gave us realistic expectations of what repairs were possible without spending 10s of thousands of dollars (unlike the first company who provided an estimate and no alternatives). His crew was prompt and personable and made every attempt to keep the living room and outside work areas clean. We ran into a couple of minor problems, which could have evolved into major problems had the foreman, Kevin, and his crew not been so willing to work with us. Once the minor problems were resolved, Kevin made sure the inspection went well and saw the project to completion in less time than we had originally estimated. We really like the finished work and are so glad it's done! We can't wait to use our new -- and safe -- fireplace for the first time in many years.

The two guys that showed up to inspect the chimney - Greg and Mike. They were super efficient, knowledgeable and personable. I was very confident that they knew what they were doing, however, I think they really wanted to do way more than was necessary to correct the issue we had. We called them because there were a couple of bricks in the fireplace that had lost some of their grout. They told us that we needed $2200 worth of repairs! Two other contractors looked at it and did not think it should cost anywhere near that much money to repair. We are going to get another opinion from a chimney specialist. I received a call from Greg due to the report that I posted here on Angies list. He went through all the numbers with me for the repairs of the chimney and fully explained why it was so much money. I never did see any pictures of what they thought was wrong with the firebox and hope to get them from another company. Greg explained that they would put someone inside the chimney for 5 hours or more to "re-stucco" the inside. That would cost $1000.00, then to fix the bricks inside the fireplace it would cost $650.00 the rest of the costs were for small things like replacing the spark arrestor screens and a couple of other things. I had to negotiate the price down from the original price they gave me of $2200. I was told when I called Monica that the price would be $69.00 as that was the special they were running at the time. This was verified by me looking at their website. I still do not understand $200 an hour for someone to "re-stucco" the inside of the fireplace. I am not an expert but this seems like a lot for this service.
Response from Chimney Safety Experts

"We have followed up with member, she had a misunderstanding on what the scope of work entailed , I also found out it was her opinion that the Bid we gave her was overpriced , not based on any actual Bid from another Chimney Contractor . A General Contractor does not Perform the full scope of Chimney work , so again we are only looking at opinions . The truth is , member was charged $69.00 for her Chimney Service , which is lower than the Price we Advertise on Angie's List ($60.00) less, she was automatically given our Lowest Advertised Price . She was also given a Price of $1,700.00 for the Advised Safety Corrections to her Chimney not $2.200.00. ($500.00 ) less than what she posted on Angie's list . At this point she has promised to get another Qualified , Licensed Chimney Contractor to give her another price for the proposed Safety Corrections and let us know the outcome , that means their price would need to be lower than $1,700.00 . Thank You Monica Morrison Office Mgr - Chimney Safety Experts"

Edgar Rios was awesome and professional and his attention to details were superb, not to mention patience. I changed my mind mid way from a pre-fab to a semi pre-fab firebox with actual bricks and mortar. Well worth the extra cost. The only slow thing was waiting on the inspector. But it's done, it's fabulous and it's permitted. Well worth the money.

Excellent work. Professional and on time for appointments for inspection work and follow up. Clean up and containment of soot was excellent. When bees were still swarming they came back to check and told me do not hesitate to call. Problem solved. As far as cost I had nothing to compare with as we have never had this type of work done before. All in all extremely happy with results.

Monica ROCKS - period! She was kind enough to help find a technician to come out to the house we were in escrow for even though they were completely booked during the time I had asked. I had explained to her how we needed to get back to the seller by a certain time and it was critical that we had the chimneys inspected. She managed to have one of her guys juggle his schedule around to accommodate us and gave us a written report immediately after checking out the chimneys. While we didn't wind up buying the house, we will certainly keep them in mind for our next house and will tell our friends about their wonderful service.

Mr. Larry Morrison did a very good (professional) job of explaining what needed to be done, and what he (or his crew) proposed to do. I expected a very professional execution, after I had signed the contract. Although the crew made a show of being concerned about us by trying not to make a mess in our livingroom, it wasn't long before we experienced more soot (in the form of dust) than we expected. (A better dust collection system than the shop vac they used would seem to be warranted.) Still, we wouldn't begrudge them a little mess if the rest of the work was top notch. The crew captain was a little difficult when it came to dealing with our concerns, and we needed to talk with Larry a couple of times to make ourselves understood. One of those concerns involved the appearance of the finished product (the chimney tile, and spark arrester) from the street. Larry did help us come to a satisfactory result (the chimney tile extension was removed), but I remain very sceptical about the quality of the damper that was installed, and about the quality of the spark arrester, of which it is a part. The spring mechanism on which the operation of the damper depends seems to me to be a weak link in its long-term operation, and even now its operation is difficult for anyone who hasn't maintained very good muscle tone in his/her arms. (One needs to firmly pull down on the chain and cable to engage the chain in the bracket on the inner side wall of the fireplace opening.) We still haven't used the fireplace to build a fire, we just like the idea that we could, if we wanted to. We also fell better knowing that the top of the chimney won't easily fall off (or through) the roof the next time we experience a major earthquake in our area.

"I followed up with this Customer and he is currently satisfied with our work, he thought the materials would be made of "Cast - Iron" not stainless steel. Cast Iron materials do not exist as Chimney Parts. He also admitted that it's just inconvenient to have people working in his home. We are giving him a free Chimney Cleaning and Inspection for his next Service and replacing a Bucket for his Back yard. He appreciated the follow-up."

I called Chimney Safety Experts on Wednesday and was able to make an appointment for Friday. Hugo and Javier arrived on time (actually a few minutes early) and introduced themselves. After asking a few preliminary questions about my use of the fireplace, they looked it over and determined it needed less cleaning than I had scheduled. Although I had been quoted a price of $129, Hugo stated that because of the lesser extent of the job, he would charge only $89. His inspection revealed an area around the gas pipe that he recommended sealing, but advised me of a product I could buy myself for $10 rather than paying for his time and materials.
