I highly recommend Thompson Heating & Air Conditioning for your home! After fielding 3 contractors for a furnace replacement, we chose Thompson based on 12 yr. equipment warranty, lifetime heat exchange & 3 yr. labor warranty, plus 1 yr. maintenance included on a Maytag fixed speed furnace and duct replacement (vs. 10 yr. parts/20 yr. heat exchange/2-yr. labor + membership maintenance fee for the runner up company - which is highly advertised). Price point was my main concern at first, so I was not considering replacing the ducting. It was his industry experience and energy conservation expertise that Matt, the heating consultant, effectively communicated why replacing the ducts was critical (home built 40 yrs. ago, aged ducts & insulation, eyeballed dust all over the insulation indicating duct leakage, East Coast experience in HVAC where systems work hard all year long vs. San Diego, CA). He did not oversell me at all. The other 2 company's "comfort" consultants didn't address the energy conservation aspect of a new furnace. The installation team (Nate & Ryan) was prepared, timely, professional, clean (covered floor & vacuumed afterwards), polite and thorough for the 2-day installation job. Matt sent pics to the team, so they knew what to expect. Nate sent pics of work back to office to expedite the following inspection. The system works great, feels good, and I'm satisfied to be heating the living space instead of the attic!

They gave us a 2-hour window for when they would arrive. They did arrive within the window, with a warning phone call 15 minutes before their arrival. They found that everything with our system was fine, with no work being required. They found that the furnace faceplate had been put back on incorrectly after the previous (free) inspection done by the power company several years ago, so they fixed that. I took the opportunity to ask about life expectancy of our heating and A/C systems (also 21 years old) and ask about options for replacement systems. Darrell was quite knowledgeable and informative. I would definitely make use of them for future work, or system replacement.
Description of Work: Furnace inspection. Our furnace is 21 years old and was not used at all last year, so wanted to just get it inspected to confirm it was still functioning properly and safe to use.

The service went very well. Matt offered several alternatives, in terms of brand and features. We chose two-stage Trane units for both the furnace and the AC. Nate and Jeff did a great job with the installation. The installation looks tight and shipshape, and it passed required inspections with no problem. Nate and Jeff were a pleasure to interact with. They were careful not to make a mess and cleaned up well afterwards. While working on the ducts, they discovered a huge break in our existing ducts, which required a cutting into the drywall from a closet for access. They kept us informed and did a clean job, which will make the required patching easy. The AC blows a lot more cool air now than it did before the work was done! Also, the new outside condenser is quieter. (One minor note is that the new outside condenser is larger than the old one, which I didn't expect. It's okay, but you might want to look into the sizes of units, along with other specifications, when deciding what to get.) Overall, Thompson did an excellent job at a good price, and they made the process easy.
Description of Work: The heat exchanger in our furnace was breached, so we needed a new furnace. However, the whole HVAC system was old, so we had both the furnace and the AC replaced. Also, Thompson recommended redoing the ducts in the attic, because the old ones were falling apart, and we had this done also.

We had an amazing experience, from our sales person Matt, who came out and gave us 4 different options for our home. Since the home is older, we knew we would probably need a new and more energy efficient furnace, as well. From the beginning Thompson was 5 star. Their installers went so professional, replacing ducting in the attic, and making sure that we were satisfied. When our HERS inspector came out and did his testing, he said, "these guys know what they are doing, they always get it right"........we have been incredibly pleased with our results, high efficiency air conditioner and furnace were installed in 1 1/2 days. Very grateful that we went with Thompson.

It went great. I was a little concerned because several years ago when I was trying to get my A/C fixed I ended up getting the hard sell on a new system before I found someone to help and they are no longer around. Took a chance on these guys. Had to wait a couple days for the appt. - technician showed up early. 1/2 hour from diagnosis through repair. Very satisfied with friendly and professional service.

It went quite well. Brian, the HVAC tech arrived at the stated time and got to work. He had several ideas as to the problem and after investigation was able to find and correct the problem( our water condensate outlet tube had clogged) which he quickly repaired. He also serviced and expertly adjusted our AC system which he had noted was not as well tuned as it should have been for its most efficient functioning. He did all of this within 2 hours and at a reasonable charge. Brian himself was quiet, but friendly and respectful and very professional. I would certainly use this company and technician again in the future.

I was very happy with the whole experience. They even went the extra mile to satisfy my park's management office with a plot plan and extra copies of the building permits. The man who came to give me a quote was very informative and was able to leave a estimate the same day. I got three different quotes from three different companies, and Thompson's was a $1000 less than one of them! Installation was accomplished in one day and the installer did not leave until he was sure everything was working, I understood the new thermostat, and was happy with the service. Thank you Thompson Heating and Air......I'm COOL now!!

I can't begin to say enough good things about this company & Brian who they sent to my home for the repair. He arrived within the two-hour window I was assigned and figured out the problem with the thermostat & why the air conditioning wasn't turning on. It was a very simple fix - the furnace door panels had been swapped (top was on bottom & bottom was on top) which didn't allow the door switch to work, thus shutting off power to the thermostat. Besides taking care of that, he measured the air temp coming out of the vents and was concerned that the reading wasn't as cold as it should be. He double checked that there was enough pressure in the coolant of the system (there was), and then discovered that we had programmed the new thermostat incorrectly & it was causing the heat and air too blow together. Yikes. So he reprogrammed the thermostat, and stayed to make sure the air blew out of the vents colder (it did by about 15 degrees!). Many people would do the initial fix and take off. And then I still would have had a problem. Brian said he doesn't like to leave until he knows everything is OK, and he was true to his word. I had a friend over at the time of the service call who was also equally impressed with the level of service and asked for the company info. Also, Brian pointed out to me that we need to put a small barrier on the side of my air conditioning unit because my dog has been peeing there and it will cause a hole which will lead to all the coolant leaking out. I had no idea that the white spot was being caused by my dog & will shorten the life of the unit. Thank you again!! Also, Brian took the time to explain the system to me & why things weren't working. He didn't try to "find" a problem - he looked for the fix. I wasn't told I needed a new system even though it's 26 years old and original to the house. He got it working properly, was professional, and truly HONEST! I would call them again in an instant and highly, HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

Darrell, the sales rep, was very helpful and easy to work with. I liked that they were flexible as far as installing a brand I had researched although the brand they quoted was also quite acceptable. They were not the cheapest, but I feel they were very reasonable and I got the best value for my money especially considering the extra time Darrell spent investigating and comparing the different manufacturers and distributors. I also liked that they quoted R8 instead of R6 to keep up with the upgrade trends. My research convinced me (after seeing horror photos online) that Thompson would do a proper installation, ie as Darrell explained, they would hang the ducts from the rafters to code using proper materials and make sure to avoid kinks and rough bends that would hamper circulation. When asked, another highly rated company stated their intention was not to adhere to this method so I chose Thompson trusting they would go the 'extra mile' to do a proper installation. They did a superior job from what I determined. The installation went very smoothly thanks to the competent crew. Nate, Jeff and Mikey were right on time, courteous, thorough and attentive to cleanup laying tarps and barriers to protect carpets and clothes. They also checked the flow from the vents afterward per my request, and I was amazed how quiet it was. All in all this was a very satisfying upgrade and money well spent!

Our original scope of work was to replace a 30 yr. old gas furnace that still operated but was very inefficient. Additionally, local changes in our recent summers revealed that air conditioning was becoming less of a luxury and more of a necessity to provide restful sleep at night. We considered many companies but actively pursued three bidders for this work. One company, USA______ was advertised on the local radio station and though their sales person was friendly, performed thorough inspections and answered our many questions, we never received a formal written quote (numbers on a blank sheet of paper). The other two companies were Action Air HVAC associated with Costco and Thompson Heating & Air Conditioning. Both were equally thorough with their inspections and their sales people were experienced installers who provided details that are more technical and challenges they saw. In the end, we went with Thompson for 1) price point that was lower even with the Costco incentives offered 2) we received another reduction for being a veteran (does not hurt to ask for AAARP, AAA, or whatever – never know what will work) and 3) they were a local company in Oceanside with many years of experience. Thompsons sales person said they had moved away from offering Trane Air Conditioning products because of difficulty in supply chain support. This was a similar complaint I heard from an out of state installer who stated the Trane was a good line but difficult getting parts for service. A local distributor who more effectively supplies Thompson’s material requirements better supported the MAYTAG line. The line of equipment we went with was Maytag. Many offerings of furnace and air conditioner styles were offered but neither Action Air or Thompsons oversold components that were in excess of our needs for our locale. Most components of HVAC systems, such as compressors, motors, etc., are commonly shared most HVAC manufacturers. During my research HVAC systems by reading and listening to comments about various manufacturers of HVAC equipment, one theme continued to be repeated. The end result of a new HVAC system relied less upon the quality or manufacturer of the components but rather upon the quality of the installer. Most homebuilder air conditioners have errors made in installation of the equipment. This proved true on our original furnace as pointed out to us by all three sales persons. Our original homebuilder installed our furnace so that part of the inlet to the intake was blocked because it was too hard to realign to the outlet plenum. Which brings me to my next point, that the personnel that we dealt with at Thompson were excellent.. From the service, experienced sales person, to the two experienced, polite, efficient installers and to the professional administrative person scheduling the crews, managing the back office issues and communicating with customers and crews, the experience could not have been any smoother. The words I would use to describe our experience are professional, personable, effective, clean, punctual, efficient, informative, good listeners.

Brian was prompt, quick and super duper nice for my winter maintenance. Just so were clear, Mr. Thompson and Garrett installed a new heating, air conditioning and duct work throughout my home in June of 2010. I am a single Mom of two and was working with the city of Poway to have improvements done to my old house with inefficient wall heaters, under a special program. Mr. Thompson did NOT sell me a unit that was too big for my home, he recommended quality products, gave suggestions for things I could do to save money on the install. He had to jump through more hoops than normal because of the city program. He was always gracious and kind. I have had no problems with my unit, Mr. Thompson was available for all of my questions, always. I recommend anyone interested in an HVAC unit and or maintenance to Thompson Heating and Air Conditioning

Garett, the owner, came out on-time to give me an estimate. He was very personable, informative, and patiently answered all my questions. He did not try to sell me on the super deluxe expensive 97% efficient unit. For our mild climate he suggested the 80% unit. I researched the company, and the price seemed reasonable so we set up an installation time. His crew, Nate, Mikey and Jeffery, came at the time promised and did an excellent job in less than 2 days. They left the garage and pathway to the attic spotless. They didn't leave any trash up in the attic(more of a crawl space), either. I was really impressed with their professionalism and work ethic. Incidentally, several months later I had a problem with the furnace and Brian came out the next day to fix it. He didn't seem to mind me watching him troubleshoot. He was friendly, punctual and explained in detail how the system worked. I would highly recommend Thompson Heating and Air.

Wanted to replace our 25 year old furnace with a new one; Thompson was not the lowest price but the rep that came to the house seemed extremely knowledgeable and communicated very specifically why he recommended the unit that we ended up buying, so decided to go with them. Also asked for a quote to install central AC. The furnace installation went very well. In fact, the city inspector even remarked that they'd done an excellent job of adequately sealing the ducts coming out of the furnace. A couple of weeks later we decided to proceed with the AC and that installation did not go well; we ended up cancelling that job. Have to say that they were very responsive, professional and easy to deal with. Would be giving them an A rather than a B if the AC install had gone as smoothly as the furnace did. We will continue to do business with them for service on the furnace and I fully expect that they will do a good job.

I've used Thompson Heating for service of my two heat pumps for about three years now. The service is routinely excellent. Garett Baird is responsive, knowledgeable, and has treated us excellently in all respects. I say this having had numerous heating service people since we bought our house some 27 years ago. Other companies have high personnel turnover and/or want to sell you something new with each visit. Also, a pet peeve of mine is that some companies insist on servicing the units every six months. But with heat pumps, they operate the same when either cooling and heating except for switching two valves. My conclusion is that six month (as opposed to annual) service is a waste of money.

My initial contact was with Garett who inspected the old system that SDG&E had red tagged. He informed me of the needed upgrades to the venting system in order to meet the current safety codes as well as the furnace replacement. On the day of the new furnace installation, Mr. Thompson, Nate and Jeffery showed up at 9 a.m.and went right to work. Mr. Thompson looked over the old unit and knew right away that additional parts not included from the manufacturer were needed to complete the job. While he went for the parts, Nate and Jeffery went to work removing the old unit. The new unit was a foot taller than the old one and as a result, part of the wall had to be removed. Nate and Jeffery completed the job around 4 p.m. and left the work area cleaner than when they started. Everyone I have spoken to or have met at this company is polite, professional, and knows their stuff especially if you have an older home.

It went great! All work was performed on time and within estimate. I got three estimates and they were all within a similar price range. Thompson's estimate was the lowest. Garrett, the owner, same out to do the first meeting. He was the only of the three providers to actually see what our existing air flow was like. The workers did a great job, especially getting a new grate on the air return in a tricky location and making it look seamless with the surrounding area.

Job was done promptly and professionally, We were very happy with the service. What we really appreciated was the initial visit. We had talked to another provider who said you need new furnace, ducts, electrical no explanation, "we won't do it any other way" Darryl explained it all.... we did not need a new furnace right now but probably would in 5 or so years. He explained that installing it now it would be included in the project permit & inspection fees and if we do it as a separate job we'd be paying close to $900 in permit and inspection fees. So we decided to do it now,but appreciated understanding the choice. Likewise, not sure about electrical so electrician came out and found, among other things, that there had been illegal wiring somehow sometime --big fire hazard. so we corrected and upgraded, but again appreciated understanding reasons and choices. And the bid also came in at a little over $1,000 less Highly recommend.

We have used Thompson Heating and Air for our last two homes. Garett Baird came out to our previous two story condo home and gave us a good price, and with his assistant Mike, replaced the old Coleman heater and installed a space saving air conditioner in our space-restricted backyard. Garett paid thoughtful attention to our needs, explaining product efficiency and cost. It was a very professional experience. There was very little space in the attic to remove the old and install the new heater and A/C interface and drain since the original builder installed the heater first then put the roof on in the original building process. No problem. Great job. Recently we moved to a larger house, called Thompson Heating and Air and met with Garett again discussing several alternatives and what would work best for our needs. We decided to replace all the existing old equipment with upgrades, installing for a two zone application, a 3 ton 16 seer 2 stage Energy Star A/C, coil, and a 2 stage variable speed furnace for the upstairs areas and a 4 ton 16 seer 2 stage Energy Star A/C, coil, and 2 stage variable speed furnace for downstairs. Garett replaced the old thermostats with 2 honeywell touch screen programmable thermostats. Deal also included a $800.00 rebate for each unit and 5 years worth of filters. The installation, among other things, included new gas flex, filter rack, filter, condenser pads, disconnect, water safety switch, fuses and pigtail. Again, as they removed the old equipment and brought in the new, everything stayed clean and neat as they went along. The old chillers were breaking down and rusted, the new pads and equipment blend right into the yard and are very quiet. The project manager, Chris, was very knowledgable on all aspects of the installation, thorough and friendly, as were Mike and Marcus; no problem with Chris explaining technical issues to us, going over every aspect of the process. We wouldn't use anyone else. Thompson Heating and Air, owner Garett Baird, Chris and the guys, once again, made it a professional, courteous, trouble free experience and everything is working great!
