Harry Clark Plumbing & Heating

About us

Harry Clark started a plumbing service company called Grand Ave. Plumbing in 1946. The company moved to Piedmont Ave. and changed the name to "Harry Clark Plumbing." Harry Clark along with his wife Madeline, ran a successful neighborhood plumbing company. Some years later Mr. Clark passed away. Madeline Clark, came from a family of plumbers and had worked with her father when growing up. Madeline was not ready to retire, or sell. She applied and succeeded in becoming a California licensed plumbing contractor. One of the first in the state. In 1976 Mrs. Clark was ready to retire. She found Donald and Beverly Marshall, who worked in the industry since 1952. They bought the company. They continued the tradition of the local plumbing company specializing in service for the Bay Area. They hired their youngest son Brad Marshall, a union trained journeymen in 1985. By 1989 Donald and Beverly were ready to retire. They sold the company to their two son's, Brad and Don Marshall. Today, Harry Clark Plumbing and Heating Inc. retains its roots as a specialized air conditioning, heating and plumbing service company. We have expanded the service base to include: sewer repair and replacement, heating and air conditioning service and installation. Today's company enjoys the status of a premier service AC contractor providing the California Bay Area with the finest residential and commercial HVAC and plumbing solutions.

My house is a 1955 gem and needed a new heater and duct system. The crawl space is low and filled with asbestos-covered ducts. We chose to have all new ducts installed in the attic space instead, and the very tall technician was amazing to get the duct work done quickly and apparently well as the heat now blasts into each room. While the company provided a very efficient and effective heater (95%) and nearly completed the job in 3 days, we are left with a bitter taste. The very nice tech who installed the system did not have a new intake grill or any filters on his truck the last day and did not install them in the new system (minor, I know, but it's the finishing details that you remember). We have all new registers and he put up the rusted, over-painted old intake grill. I asked about the filters and he said go to any hardware store to find them. For $6000, I think a filter is a nice touch. I have asked several times for the past month to have the two small items sent out, but have been put off. The technician did a good job overall, but the customer service for the company is surprising. I would recommend them to a friend, but with the warning that customer service and follow-through is weak. Props to Phil, the technician.

We've used them for years. They are always prompt and they send people that really know what they are doing. They try to send the same person who has worked on your house before especially if it is related to the same work, which makes it faster and simpler. They are very reliable and we don’t have to worry about them sending someone that is not competent. All of their people are well trained and know what they are doing.

I called for an appointment on the Thursday morning and was given a two hour window for that afternoon. Marcus called me back within the hour offering to come by immediately if I was available. He was very courteous and straightforward, talking through solutions to the issues I'd reported, and indicating cost-saving options, such as the means by which I can check the tub for leaks rather than paying his crew to do so. I received a very reasonable estimate with two options for the hot water heater. They were available to do the work as early as the next day, but I scheduled them for the Monday to work around our movers. The team arrived on-time Monday morning and worked through the day on the hot water heater. They did excellent work. On Tuesday morning the team arrived to complete the plumbing work and were very clear about what they were doing. Further, they indicated that the slow supply to the kitchen sink had been resolved through a combination of the water heater upgrade & simple disassembly. Summary: they did good work, quickly. I was most impressed by their beyond-the-call-of-duty honesty in identifying work that can be avoided.

The plumber spent about a half day doing the work. He was prompt and courteous and explained everything and answered questions well. He accidentally broke a shower valve handle, but came back two days later to fix it after ordering a replacement even though I had already paid them in full.

Overall Harry Clark was great. The workman were professional and courteous. We get complements on the copper pipes (they are exposed in basement) all the time. The really took the time to install them neatly. There was an issue with the sewer lateral, but they came back and made it right. It was cleaner after they left then when they started. They had to pull up some of our patio to do work. They relaid the cement and made every effort to match color pattern and texture.

It went pretty well. They were done in 2-3 hours after estimating one-day of work. Clean-up was well done so no issues with anything. Just a job well done.

The overall service has been great. I have been able to request the same person to come out every time so they know what is going on already.

I would give them five stars. It was good service and they didn't charge us much. It was a quirky sort of thing and they had a good attitude and they still gave us a very good price. They sent three different technicians to work on the problem and they finally sent the top guy. He was a veteran and really knew his stuff. He made several trips and got it right. I am an engineer so I understand technology pretty well. They tried changing controls and making adjustments. It was a problem that was hard to reproduce. He finally fixed it and bent some metal to improve air circulation and that solved the problem. They said to call if it didn't work, but it did. I have recommended them to others.

They did a very good job. They were fairly expensive I thought, but they worked quickly and efficiently. They were able to take care of all of our problems in just a couple of hours, whereas it would have taken me a long time. There a couple of small leaks that showed up later after they installed a faucet and we called them back for another problem, too. They showed up promptly and took care of the issues at no charge. We were very pleased with the service.

They are a good company. The guy was professional and he did what he said he would do. He was reasonably priced. We don’t have any source of comparison for their price. They were very responsive and punctual. We will call them back again, if required.

The furnace was installed quite soon after we signed the contract, for which we were grateful since the house was not well heated. However, to our surprise the workers just showed up early one morning without prior arrangement, which was somewhat disruptive. The work was performed quickly and efficiently but was not very well supervised. The salesman had assured us that he would take a personal interest in our contract but in fact he was out of town for most of the week when the work was done and we were unable to contact him at all, in particular when we wanted to clarify the cost of adding an extra heat vent (which turned out to be so expensive that we decided against it). Some months after the work was completed, the system failed to pass the Berkeley energy conservation inspection because the ductwork insulation had not been completely installed. Harry Clark fixed this (a very minor problem) promptly and at no cost, but refused to reimburse us for the $50 reinspection fee.

I called Harry Clark Plumbing to repair a leaking faucent in my apartment building. I had tried to fix it myself, but the faucet parts were stuck so tightly that I could not loosen them. I asked the dispatcher to have the plumber call me after diagnosing the problem to discuss the repair. The plumber showed up on time, and talked to my tenant. He completed the repair, but he failed to call me. I was fine with the cost and the nature of the repair, but I was disappointed that he didn't call me as I had requested. Later that day, when I called the office to ask what had happened, they were not clear on whether the plumber had even shown up at my building. I had to get in touch with my tenant to verify that the repair had been performed.

Everything went great. The estimators and the workmen showed up on time and got right to work. Our furnace is under the house, down a steep hillside and the workers (yay Thomas!) didn't bat an eye. The job was finished in less than 3 days. Thomas gave me a tour of the completed project, went over the operations of all items, explained the new thermostat and told me how the inspection process would occur.

I've used Harry Clark before and had a great experience. When it came time to remodel my 2 upstairs bathrooms, I decided to use them again - big mistake. I don't think Don (the owner and estimator) likes doing projects like this, because his estimate was very high and he seemed annoyed the entire time he was at the house. I used them anyway because their plumber had done such a good job on the last project. This time they sent a plumber who had just started with the company and appeared to have limited experience. He was late. The rough in for the first bath took 2 days as he struggled to figure out how to re-route the plumbing for the shower. He spent his lunch hours studying the documentation that came with the Grohe shower valve he was installing since this was his first time installing one. He attached the shower valve to the studs with plumbers tape using one of the screw holes that was meant for attaching the valve trim (an issue I had to address when installing the trim and really, shouldn't a professional plumber know better?). Other than that issue, everything does work, but getting there wasn't clean, pretty, neat or professional. They were supposed to move a toilet drain as part of the work, but it didn't get done and I let it slide since I had changed the shower valve location in the middle of that installation. The shower drain was supposed to be moved but could not be moved due to a joist directly below the shower. So I paid $2,800 to rough in a shower valve, a tub valve and a lavatory drain and water feeds. Very pricey. Bottom line: expensive and quality is very dependent on the plumber you get assigned. I have found better plumbing companies that are cheaper with higher quality outputs for my other projects.

I had a running toilet. Harry Clark was the only company that was able to accommodate the urgent request in a timely manner. Bo arrived promptly and worked quickly. He replaced the valve that connects the toilet to the wall and all of the internal mechanisms of the toilet. He was really pleasant and efficient. He also took a look at my other bathroom to assess a problem at no additional charge. I would call them again if I had another problem.

It was a lot of work, rather more than I had imagined. Hardest part was putting in the overflow line, which had to go through the wall, the crawl space, and the outside wall. Buck uses top quality parts, which is nice -- stuff should last a long time.

Buck arrived quite late (outside the time window for our appointment, I'd about given up on him), but was otherwise very professional and knowledgeable. The project went far beyond the scope that I had in mind (fixing a leaking supply line), but that was due to the fixture being very old and not well maintained. It turns out that I will also need to replace some sub flooring due to water damage. The toilet itself however is complete with high quality new parts.

Tried to contact on phone and had to leave a message. They never called back. When I phoned several days later to request an estimate I was told they would call back in a week. The rep on the phone was rather strange and tried to get me to commit to repair work on the phone before coming out, I would be charged from the time they left they left the office. The company never called back even after a follow up email inquiry. I found this strange and a huge waste of my time. I would not want such an unprofessional outfit working on my home.
Response from Harry Clark Plumbing & Heating

"WE ARE A VERY BUSY COMPANY AND THIS CUSTOMER CALLED DURING THE PEAK SEASON. WE TOLD HIM THERE WAS QUITE A WAITING LIST FOR FREE ESTIMATES DUE TO THE CURRENT BACKLOG OF SCHEDULED WORK. WE OFFERED TO COME OUT AND DO THE WORK ON TIME PLUS MATERIAL BASIS. THE CUSTOMER DECLINED. THERE NOTHING WRONG WITH BEING BOOKED. THE CUSTOMER WAITED UNTIL LATE FALL TO THINK ABOUT THERE HEATING REPAIR. I ENCOURAGE ALL CUSTOMERS NOT TO WAIT UNTIL THEY HAVE AN EMERGENCY. YOUR TRULY, DON MARSHALL"

I needed a new furnace in my home, as the old one was 35 years old, my nephew recommended Harry. Harry came and took the old furnace out and put in a new energy saver air conditioner and furnace. He was in and out in 2 days and took care of everything. The furnace came recommended as it was an energy saver and the PG&E said it would save me money. They also offered a rebate on the installation of an energy saver furnace that I qualified for. I was extremely pleased with the price; it was the best estimate I received.
