From the very first encounter (with the estimator), it was a very good experience. The estimator listened to my needs and concerns. He spent 45 minutes with me explaining the methods, materials, and design of the proposed roof. He warned me that some dust & grit would unavoidably come through the ceiling (I don't have an attic, and the wood plank ceiling is right under the roof). That gave me the opportunity to cover my furniture, etc. with sheets & tarps and minimized cleanup for me. The work was done in 3 days, and the crew cleaned up very well each day. It hasn't been a hot summer, but the energy efficiency of the roof has definitely helped keep my house noticeably cooler. I got 2 other estimates before choosing Berkeley Roof Services (BRS). The first had a very nice & helpful estimator, but the roof he proposed had a lower level of energy efficiency than I wanted. That bid was proportionately less than BRS's. The third estimate I got was for the exact same thing as BRS proposed, but $2,000 more expensive. Plus, I thought the estimator was a jerk. He didn't listen to me, talked about himself a lot, and seemed disdainful of some of the questions I asked. The ONLY negative with BRS had to do with the foreman of the roofing crew. He was nice to deal with, obviously knew what he was doing, and the job was done very punctually. However, the first day of the job I was supposed to wait for him to go over the particulars. He was more than an hour and a half late, and he didn't call to let me know. I called BRS after waiting an hour, and when he called back he said he was about 45 minutes away. I should NOT have had to call him, he should have called me to let me know. After the bulk of the job was completed, there was a very small area on the siding that needed to be painted to cover some putty. It was probably about a 15 minute job. I provided the needed paint. It took weeks, with me calling twice to find out when he would be there, to get it done. The touch-up was completed, though, and I was happy with the result. This aspect of the job was the only less than wonderful part of the project and would not make me hesitate to work with BRS again. Considering the exceptional work and the rest of the experience, however, Berkeley Roof Services was GREAT. I've recommended them to 3 friends and a friend of a friend. I wouldn't have done that if I hadn't had a fantastic experience with BRS.

It all went seamlessly. They answered all of my (many!) questions, Got the work done in the specified time, did a geat job cleaning up afterwards. They fit our relatively small job in between larger jobs, as the rains were soon coming. I'd strongly recommend them.

It went well, again, it is probably worth your while to really inspect the roof prior yourself, ideally with someone that is knowledgeable. There are some things you might want to talk to them in advance about. They do a good job, provide the right pitch roof jacks etc, but like any company, they need to keep to a schedule and so things planed in advance, will work out better.

I spent around $5000. I was very happy with them. I would recommend them to others. I don?t have any complaints with them. They were a little expensive, but they were very meticulous. I will use them again in the future.

Berkeley Roof Services was great, Joe Cunliffe, came out and gave recommnedations about repairing a leak, vs. installing a new roof. The estimates for both services arrived promptly and after a few estimates, Berkeley Roof Services was the best price for a new roof. We set up a day for installation, had a sample board dropped off the pick out the color. We had to reschedule the installation due to a rainy weekend, by one day. The crew that did the installation was great, took 2 1/2 days instead of 1, but the crew was prompt, nice and really cleaned up the mess. We're thrilled with the new roof and would highly recommend!

I had 10 bids for the job. I analyzed them and decided to use this company based on their ability to do the work well, their punctuality, their professionalism, their willingness to talk about things and to accommodate my needs. They were the best. I felt confident that they could do the job because they understood it. They told me that they could do the job in two phases as I didn?t have the essential amount of money to do the job at once. They were able to develop a program such that the job was done in two phases. They were easy to work with; they were professional. They were punctual and insightful. They did all the things that I think a contractor should do. Their price wasn?t the cheapest, but from the value point of view, they were excellent. I referred them to a friend of mine for roofing job at his home. I will have them back to do the second phase of the job shortly.

There was one hiccup in the project which was not their fault: there was a freak rain storm after they tore off the roof. As soon as they realized what was happening, which was early on a Sunday morning, they were rushing out here putting tarps on right away. They also offered to repaint the house and everything else for the water damage; I did not need to have them do that but they were very professional with the whole incident. The roof is difficult to access but it still looks in perfect condition after all of these years. I have used them since then for gutter repair as well.

It was expensive because this gutter is 40 feet about the ground with a straight fall down; they had to do a lot of work to stay safe. They were very good and I enjoyed working with them because they were diligent and they did what they promised. All of the bids I received were similar in price so I went with Westco because I had used them before with success.

Westco was the only company that we talked to that advised us to throw plastic sheeting over our interior furniture in those portions of the house with cathedral ceilings; indeed, the hammering and pounding did result in a very small amount of roofing debris falling from above. The workers arrived exactly on schedule, every day; they even worked a full Saturday when rain was forecast for Sunday. I was extremely impressed with their expertise and professionalism: it was all business, all the time, with expert solutions to the problems presented by the complex job. If the job had been simply "re-roof" they would deserve a page of happiness. Here are the reasons I am not giving them one. (1) The requested Porta-Potty did not arrive until the third day. (2) The foreman examined the *inside* of the 2x12 fascia boards for rot, but did not examine the *outside*, where the rot was visible from the ground and which was the impetus for the entire project. I had to stop him as he was about to install gutters over the rotted boards. (3) The specifications called for the installation of a vent above the master bedroom. It was not installed in the normal course of reroofing. When I brought their attention to it, they installed it promptly, but had to cut into the new roof in order to do so. (4) They cleaned up very well, every day, except for the final stage which involved hooking up the downspouts to the new gutters. I found far more sheet metal scrap around the house than I had expected given the superb cleanup job done up to that point. Bottom line: highly recommended for the basic job of reroofing, but if you have any "extras" such as rot to be repaired or vents to be added, keep a close eye on the proceedings.

It went extremely well from the initial estimate through the work and the cleanup. I had five estimates done; Berkeley's came somewhere in the middle. But their bid covered in detail every aspect of the project, as I had described it, and they had contacted my solar guys to get the appropriate information, which was also described in detail in the bid. The level of detail was a key factor in my decision. When I had questions, they were responsive. As to their guys, they came when they said; they did a solid, professional job; they cleaned up the yard at the end of every day. They worked with the solar guys, and even left the temporary steps up my steep roof for the solar guys use, which they really appreciated. And when the solar was installed and the inspection completed, the Berkeley guys removed the steps and cleaned up a number of small issues, quickly and efficiently.

They were excellent. They were very professional. They gave us a very thorough and honest evaluation of our gutters. They gave us a bid that was about in line with the rest of the companies we looked into. They came in and were very responsive to us. They did the work very well. I have been pleased.

Of course with the return of the rains I found a serious roof leak! But Berkeley Roof Services saved the day! Joe, the project planner was able to come out the next day, and, to my amazement, said he could get a crew on the job the following day!! He was very clear in the issues and presented a number of options to deal with the leak right away. (Good news since it was going to rain soon, AND I was going on vacation!) Since I new I was on the verge of needing to redo the roof, I decided to proceed with an entire replacement. Joe walked me through the options, explained what improvements could be done on the venting and drainage, and presented me with a very good and detailed proposal! The crew came as promised on time, and Kisoo, the project manager, walked me through the job. They would replace the section with the leak that day and come back after the rain that was forecast to finish the rest. They did a wonderful job that day, and the crew showed me the work and explained what they did--VERY courteous, professional, hard-working. The crew came back when they promised and, though they had to work around the rain, finished the job as scheduled. Kisoo kept me fully informed with updates and came back to walk me through the entire job! AND, they were unbelievably careful about the landscaping and cleaning and hauling the debris. Kudos to all involved. VERY impressive work and positive experience! Saved me from the rain AND saved my vacation!

It took a little longer to schedule the job than I would have preferred, a couple of weeks, with rainy season approaching. But the weather held up and the company moved the job up a few days when their schedule changed. After initial inspection, they raised the estimated price about $300 for some work around the chimney, which I assume was needed, though I didn't have any way of checking. They finished on time, but had to come back a couple of days later because a couple of previously existing leaks hadn't been repaired--I may not have told them about it, or they may have missed it. They did that work for no extra charge and it's all held up well after the first significant rains of the year, which was our major concern. The warranty is good, the price was the lowest available among firms with high ratings in a customer survey, and overall my wife and I are quite satisfied with the work, assuming it lasts.

Response from Berkeley Roof Services - Westco

"Firstly I would like to apologize for the inconvenience. As a prospective client, you deserve a prompt, professional and courteous response to your enquiries and I pride myself on providing just that. I’m sorry and disappointed that I let you down. Contacts from people like you are the lifeblood of our business and we cannot afford to simply ignore them. I don’t know what happened with your call, but the most obvious solution is often the correct one, and most likely we simply wrote down the wrong telephone number. Unfortunately you did not feel like calling us again-informing us of our over-site and giving us the opportunity to provide you with service. Hopefully, we as a company can learn from this failure and increase our commitment to providing excellent customer service in the future. Joseph Cunliffe 510-648-9253"

Good news and bad news. Company was the only one of six that I contacted that responded with a reasonable proposal. Unfortunately, their first attempt was completely misguided and ineffective. To their credit, when I called to explain that I had not received what had been contracted for, a representative was at my house within 2 hours; he said "I apologize, we did a crappy job, we'll make it right." And at 9:00 the next morning a crew arrived and spent 5 hours doing what they should have done the first time.

In my business, I am constantly calling on tradespeople to perform work related to houses. Christoph Lahrs is the go-to guy at Berkeley Roof Services. He communicated well, he anticipated and solves problems, and there are never surprises. His bids are professional and his work is impeccable.

Came on time, lots of workers, finished in two days. We had a lot of dry rot on our garage so they needed to replace a lot of wood. They let us know about the extra charges before performing the work. They were the lowest of three bids we got.
