We have recently purchased engineered wood floor from the Universal Hardwood Flooring (UH).  We had a very good working experience with them.  Jeff, Wendy, and Mario are friendly, patient, and know wood floor very well.  We wanted to get engineered wood floor, but were concerned about formaldehyde levels.  We visited the store several times.  Jeff answered our questions, addressed our concerns, and gave us suggestions every time.  In the end, they helped us find the beautiful wood boards that we like.  They also gave us a copy of the certificate of conformance, showing that the formaldehyde level in the engineered wood we bought is CARB phase 2 compliant.  We feel in good hands buying wood floor from them.  I would recommend UH to people who are interested in getting wood floor.

PERFECT - It took a while for Universal Hardwood to source the right wood at the right cost, but they were patient and responsive the whole way through and in the end provided beautiful material at a reasonable price. Jorge, the installer, meet with us on site to review board layouts so that we could have boards centered in the hallways and the patterns run continuously through all the rooms without any transitions or strange conditions. He provided a range of finishes samples and revisions to achieve a Grey toned floor that we were looking for. He completed everything on time and on budget - there were no up-charges. He and his crew were knowledgeable and walked us through every step and recommended design directions that i had not considered so that there are no raised thresholds at the tile transitions - super job!!!

They represented that they were the exclusive distributor for a specific cork board flooring product I wanted. I gave them a deposit, then learned the material was available at a much lower price from the internet. They were not the exclusive distributor. We got into a wrangle over the refund and I ended up having to use the deposit to purchase other materials at a very uncompetitive price. A very nasty experience overall.
Response from UNIVERSAL HARDWOOD FLOORING & MOULDING INC

"We are a retail store. Customers who purchase from us, understand that we offer customer service which comes at a cost. We cannot and do not pretend to compete with the internet. If you want excellent customer service, a skilled sales staff, then shop at UH. We are not the retailer for you when your objective is to use our professional sales personnel to gleam information and then purchase from the internet."

My floors were supposed to have the same semi-gloss finish on them and he put on a high gloss finish. But that's nothing - every inch of floor had dust, hairs, sloppy puddles. I was in tears. I told him he had to fix it. He tried in a closet for an hour and didn't even fix one inch. He begged me not to call his boss, the owner of Universal Hardwood, Jeff Meltzer. I had no choice - I called Mr. Meltzer, who claimed he had no idea his people were doing my job. He said they were rogue and Mario was the cashier at the store. Mr. Meltzer came over and saw the mess. He said he hired Mario when he was a busboy at restaurant and had taken him under his wing. He appeared to be upset - yet accepted no responsibility for the job. He sent over 2 other floor people to try to fix the mess - they wire sanded a spot on the floor and proceeded to make huge scratches in the floor. I kicked them out. He then sent over another floor person who guaranteed he could fix it for only $2000. If I wasn't happy I didn't need to pay him. He and 3 people were on their hand and knees trying to hand sand off the debris embedded in my floors then sealed them again. After 2 days they looked better - but not as good as they looked before Mario had started. In fact there were spots he sanded so much he had to touch them-up[ with a marker. These spots still glare at me today. I paid him because he tried his best. Mr. Meltzer is one of the people who testifies against other floor people in court. Floor people I called for help hate him and wanted me to sue him. They said my only choice was to strip the floors and start over ($5,000) or replace them ($12,000). As far as I know - Mario still works there - I was shocked to find that out. DON'T TRUST THIS COMPANY. I did learn to never have anything done without a written estimate on a company printed form. Even clean & polish, which is all I thought I was getting.
Response from UNIVERSAL HARDWOOD FLOORING & MOULDING INC

"The member did not contract with Universal Hardwood. We are a material supplier of hardwood flooring. The first we heard from the member was when she called to express her dissatisfaction of the work performed. We were surprised because we don’t employee installers. We expressed this to the member and never heard from her again."

The wood came 3 days after it was promised. Workers showed up 1-2 hours later then promised each working day. Installation took 11 days instead of the 6 days they promised. This was due to the fact that they did not measure correctly and ran out of wood so we had to wait for more wood to be delivered. We have creaks in the floor in several places.
Response from UNIVERSAL HARDWOOD FLOORING & MOULDING INC

"We are a material supplier of hardwood flooring. We cannot guarantee that there will not be delays on construction projects. Since we do no installation, I cannot speak for the labor issue. The member contracted the labor separately and only paid UH for the material we supplied."
