Auto Tires, Auto Service
I had been there before, for a front end alignment and new tires. This time I came because my front end was shaking violently at Highway speeds. It was a tire, a motor mount or a U-joint in a drive shaft - something like that. I paid the $45 fee he requested to have it looked at and went to lunch.
It wasn't hard to diagnose the problem - there was a giant gash in my tire and it was peeling - a very dangerous situation. Except that wasn't the first part of the conversation when I returned. It was about the $700 dollars or so needed to replace the three motor mounts.
Fortunately I did not have the money because the damaged tire was not initially disclosed during the conversation. While we were talking about maybe doing one or two of motor mounts this week - the two that were cheapest easiest to get to and doing the other mount next week; only then did he bring up the tire.
The owner showed me the tire and the two top motor mounts that were loose. It took less then 3 minutes to perform the bad motor mount test - pry it with a screwdriver. It was clear the problem was the failed tire. He offered to replace the tire for $40.00 balanced. I agreeded. I left thinking I was getting $5.00 back.
When I came to pick up the car the he charged me $40 for the tire plus kept the $45 fee to tell me what was wrong.
Looking back I note that he played a little game filling out the estimate/work order by having me pre-sign the authorization before I went to lunch. My advise - stay away!
