It went very well. Bryan the sales rep is very friendly and knowledgable and he was really one of the big deciding facors in making my decision to use Brody-Pennel. The service was performed twice yearly and has been great everytime. They included all the a/c filters and Bryan himself even dropped some extras off that were needed at the time. He and the company were true professionals and there services were greatly appreciated.

I had been a satisfied customer of Brody-Pennell for over 25 years. I have had a heating & AC maintenance service contract with them for the last 15 years. The last time they found that my 27 year old AC condenser was low on freon and needed a new access valve. They said the part was no longer available and the unit would have to be replaced. A salesman came and also told me that it would have to be replaced. He said that since the old unit used R-22 freon and the new unit would use R-410A freon, I would have to replace the evaporator also. He said he would get me 3 possible quotes by the following Tuesday. To repair if possible, just the AC and the AV and heating system. I never received a quote after calling 3 times. As a result I called other companies on Angie's List and found out that the AC was in fact repairable for $400-$500 and that If I did replace the condenser, I would not have to replace the evaporator, just the expansion valve to accommodate the R-410A freon. I ended contacting a total of 5 companies before selecting Grand Heating & Air.
Response from Brody-Pennell Heating and AC
"Our comfort consultant gave the Member a proposal to replace the condenser and evaporator coil on July 6, 2010 in the amount of $4,604.00. The Member wanted us to supply him with the information so he could shop (on the internet which he as done before) for the part and if found have us or another contractor install on his 27 year old equipment. With all due respect to Grand Heating & A/C NO 27 year old coil is rated acceptable for the high pressures of a R-410a refrigerant system. We try our best to advise our customers as to the right options for them, however it you call enought contractors you will eventually find one that will give you the cheapest price. Who do you call when the cheap repair does not work?"

They came out and basically told us their was one way to do the job. They would cut a hole in the roof and the large unit would sit inside and have ducting go throughout. We received their quote but decided to go with another company since we felt more comfortable with them and they provided us several solutions that were less invasive. After we decided to go with Jeff at JW Heating and Air I wrote Brody to let them know and I was not pleased by the response I received. Hi Ken, Thanks so much for the proposal you prepared for us. We've decided to go with another company. Thanks, "Thank You, I understand the building is not yours, so I realize you did not need the best company to do the job. Good Luck with it, maybe I can help you in the future." I did not appreciate their response...we chose the best company for us!
Response from Brody-Pennell Heating and AC
"Customer wanted us to do installation without the proper permits required by the City of Culver City including structural calculations, screening and plan check. It is our understaning another company was selected because of a lower price and did not pull the proper permits and were caught by the city. Compliance with city regulations cost money and makes the difference."

I called; they set up a date; they came when they said they would. They called when the technician was on his way, as they said they would. I also had the technician clean the furnace at a second house for an equivalent price.

Three areas for improvement: a) the guys who showed up didn't know the extent of the job - for example, they told me that relocating and installing a new thermostat was not included. I had to show them my copy of the quote after which they willing performed the work b) the crews should plan on spending time with the homeowner showing me how to operate the furnace. I called to them as they were getting into their truck to come back and give me a mini-lesson. c) The crew set the pilot light at its very highest setting - quite a flame and very expensive to run; I called and had to reschedule a second appointment to reset the pilot. It was explained to me that the furnace comes this way from the factory and that I cannot adjust it myself. If this is true, they should consult the homeowner on the desired setting.

Someone came by and was very professional and checked out the heater and knew what was wrong in 5 minutes, and within an hour had the part and fixed it. Too bad it was so expensive, but that is not really their fault.

They gave us a good estimate for installing the air conditioner. They did the job very professionally and their price was very fair compared to the other bids that we got. Our experience with them was very nice. It was pretty no muss no fuss. It took them two days to install the system. They didn?t disrupt our family life or damage the house in any way. We liked them very much.

We received an estimate from Brian who was very professional and knowledgeable and the estimate was in the same price range as other estimates that we had received. I was very impressed that the written estimate was very detailed and also included information about the federal tax credit and manufacturer rebate for the recommended unit. We ended up going with another company, but would have definitely been comfortable hiring Brody-Pennell who came in a very, very close 2nd to the other company.

It's the follow up. Every year they send me a bill for $259.00 which was sold to me as a "contract" that would have a technician check my units, change the filter and, this is where it gets nasty, cover service calls. When my a/c went out today (8/24) and I called, I was told thee was a $85 charge for diagnostic service. Sally did not care that I felt misled. She did not care that not only have I gone along with this program (filters can be purchased for maybe $20 at a home improvement store, but I was banking on what they would not provide.) but I got a neighbor to put in a similar unit for even more than what I spent. Full disclosure - they sent me a check for $50 a year ago, with no explanation.)
Response from Brody-Pennell Heating and AC
"The member called our office to request service for his system on July 24th. Our customer service representative advised him there was a charge to send a technician to diagnose his problem. He became very abusive to not only the representative but her supervisor. They pointed out to him that he has a maintenance agreement with our company which entitles him to preferred service and a 10% discount on parts and labor. He would not listen made some threats and hung-up. Several days later the member's wife called me in response to my letter stating our representatives should be better trained in handling people like her husband, further that he did not take the time to read his maintenance agreement. She offered no apology for the abuse that our people had to take. Said her husband was going to write a negative report on Angie’s List because we would not give him free service."

The company maintenance person arrived on time. He was extremely courteous. He performed a very extensive and thorough examination of the entire air conditioning system from testing the airflow output, looking at all electrical connections and checking electricity usage, checking for carbon dioxide emissions, testing the thermostat functioning and freon levels, and replacing filters. He took a good 45 minutes to give everything a thorough check.

Their inspector was very professional - donning paper shoes when indoor (as did all the workers), coming promptly and communicating clearly - and friendly. We arrived at a price that I felt was fair, and they did the job in a couple of days, When an issue arose - in the course of installing the second return, they inadvertently clipped a wire that serves a light in a work-space - they assumed responsibility for fixing the issue, hiring an electrician to come in and resolve the problem at no additional expense to me. Brody-Pennell are excellent technicians and good business people. More importantly, in my experience they have tremendous integrity and dedication to their work. I would hire them again in a minute, and would recommend them without reservation. They're the best.

I didn't wind up using this company only because I had also called another firm that was closer to home and had arranged with them to do the job. I was very impressed with the professionalism of BRODY-PENNEL.

The company sent out someone for an estimate and he arrived early...called me to say that he was there and I told him I was on my way, he waited for me and was very good during the estimate process. Had good advice regarding my pick of new system. I just thought that it was strange that I never received and estimate from him...this was before Christmas, so maybe I got lost in the shuffle...don't know what happened. I ended up going with another heating and Air company and will do a report on him (when the work is done) but I figure if I'm spending that kind of money, I want someone that is on top of it from the beginning.

They were great. Before we went on Angie's List, we went through so many lame companies who lied about our heater and just wanted their $50. It's a nightmare situation out here in L.A. when it comes to heating and air conditioning. The one place we liked had closed down. I found Brody-Pennell on Angie's List and out of all of the companies I spoke to they seemed the most real. They were very responsive. They were busy but they came out within a couple days. They were very honest, and they applied that first visit's cost to purchasing a new heating and air conditioning system. They had a great list of references. They're bonded, licensed and insured. They got us a great deal: same as cash for a year with no interest. They were on time. They got done in half the amount of time they said they would; it was a three and a half hour job. They were polite. I just can't tell you how great they are. I would recommend them to everyone.

The visit was great. They were 30 minutes late due to traffic, but called to let me know in advance. No big deal. First the technician, Juan Angulano put on coverings for his shoes before coming in our house. Nice touch. He removed the freshly painted attic access cover and slid it over without scraping it at all. He performed the service and at my request made a guess at how old our furnace might be (late 70's, early 80's). He checked the "history" on our battery operated carbon monoxide detector and recommended a plug in type too. I felt Juan really knew his stuff. He was well-spoken, smart, professional and immaculately clean. Juan recommended a follow up check up in March since by then the furnace will have been running regularly for about 4 months to see how it's holding up. I also asked about adding another vent in our kitchen. Juan astutely recommended I call for an appointment with an estimator instead of him guesstimating wrongly. The whole visit took about an hour. It would have been less, but Juan took the time to explain things to me so I could understand what was going on.

My A/C stopped cooling. The technician found a slight leak in one of the valves of the unit and replaced the cap on the valve with a better quality cap. At that time, freon was added to the system, however, the technician did not have enough freon to completely fill the unit. A subsequent service call was made to a) check to see if any freon had leaked from the first visit and b) if no more leak, add the rest of the freon to the system. The technician also checked the airflow coming out of the vents as well as the intake. The system is now cooling the house.

A technician came out and found the primary problem, which was the fan motor. After examining the system and it's age, he recommended replacing the heater and coil instead of just replacing the fan motor. I considered the age and performance of my unit, and agreed to replace. The sales representative came out the next day, and asked me what things were important to me in terms of quality, features and performance, and recommended a replacement unit. Then, a foreman came out to scope out the work in detail. The following week, two technicians arrived and did the work. They were very professional, timely, and got everything working in about 5 hours. One of them taught me how to use the new thermostat, and fully tested the new unit. It works great and delivers much better performance than the 33 year old unit and is more energy efficient.
