I hired Home Preservation after reading a fairly extensive article about them in the SF Chronicle. I was a new home owner and am (shamefully) hopeless about DIY stuff. Don't want to do it, don't want to learn how to do it, and, most importantly, simply won't do it. What H/P does is take the burden off me. That alone is worth the cost of the service.
I am confident that my house will not fall down on my head because every aspect of it is checked and tweaked 4x year.
I just refinanced it and the guy who came in to inspect the house on behalf of the new lender noted that it was and quot;well maintained.and quot; I can assure you that his assessment had nothing to do with me, and everything to do with the nice folks at H/P.

I have been using them for years. They are professional, punctual, and trustworthy. They even come out to the house to water plants while we are out of town.

This service really didn't work out the way I planned. My home is worth about $500K, and I think this service is intended for homes of at least $2M or more. During the expensive quarterly visits, the personnel did not have the tools and materials to make needed repairs on my house. I also contracted through HPS to have some plumbing work done. That plumber ended up breaking our dryer and HPS was obnoxious when I asked them to take responsibility. (Ken Spratt was the person I dealt with.) This was when I knew I had contracted with the wrong company. Other than the initial visit, I didn't get the feeling that the quarterly visit personnel were truly checking my house for problems. Instead of using a service like HPS, I would recommend following a standard home maintenance plan yourself, and use Angie's list to find reputable contractors. Or at least find some handyman company with more integrity than HPS.

I have used this company for years and they do everything, they come quarterly and see what needs to be done. No matter what it is they do a great job every time. They are reliable and honest and I always have the same team of people that come each time and I like that. They are easy to deal with and are always on time and I won't deal with anyone else for anything I need. They charge quarterly and are a little expensive but are worth it.
