This was a frustrating experience, because the people are nice, but the service process is unusual and the service itself inconsistent in terms of quality. Earlier in 2010, I had a home inspection performed in order to learn what, if any plumbing, electrical, etc., issues I needed to deal with before I spent my savings on something more enjoyable. Sure enough, the inspector found plenty to be done in the realm of plumbing. Soon thereafter, I looked through Angie's list and based on reviews, selected the Family Plumber to come out and provide an estimate. Rick was the very nice plumber they sent. I showed him the inspector's report and then he went though the areas around and under the house that needed work and provided an estimate for the remedial work. Some time went by (we had to save up for the work that needed to be done) and then Rick came out for the first time on December 2nd. But wait: a day or two before his scheduled appointment, Megan from the office called and asked me if they could reschedule because of another client with an emergency. Since I had arranged to take the day off from work, I said no, but would find another plumber. Somehow, though, they were able to get Rick out. Not including the initial meeting during which I asked for an estimate, it took three visits to accomplish the work because the Family Plumber schedules their team in hourly increments - something I have never previously encountered. So if something goes sideways or takes longer, one is left to schedule an additional appointment. As I said, Rick is very nice, but he does tend to leave debris from his work. Not excessively, but not acceptably, either. As mentioned above, he was not able to do all of the requisite work on the first visit, so told me to call the office to schedule another time. While here, though, he noted the standing water under the house and remarked that there was no visible source, but that he would talk to the owner of the company. I never heard the results of that effort and doubt that it occurred. When he did come back, he had a different theory for the water beneath the house, but also remarked it was in another location. Once again, before his second visit, I was called by the office to reschedule - this time for some other reason. This was a huge inconvenience since I had again arranged time off from work. We made arrangements, but at this point I was getting weary of the process. The last time, two other guys ended up coming out to finish the work. They were very nice and seemed much more competent. When I called to schedule that last appointment, I also reported that when Rick had moved a hose bib he had drilled into the stucco and then changed his mind and left the first set of holes there without patching them. Also, one of the outside sprinkler valves leaked a lot after he had worked on it. Too, he had taken pictures of the shower faucet so he'd be able to match it when he came back, and had obviously done no follow-up, because when the new team came (Josh and ???), they had to scramble to get a finish that would match mine (they did, and I really appreciated their extra effort). What I didn't realize and mention at the time is that when he moved the other hose bib in the back yard, he placed the spigot so low to the ground that it is something of a back pain to reach. Not impressed. Too, the hole he had drilled is significantly larger than the size required and he didn't seal it. I also didn't know until even more time had elapsed (it had been raining a lot, so I had not needed to water the yards) is that when he fixed the leaky sprinkler valve in front that one now needed to call Mr. Universe to turn on the sprinklers because it is VERY hard to turn without considerable strength. Have I said enough yet? I am tired of typing, so let me summarize like this: way too much hassle to get a day's worth of plumbing work done (maybe a day and a half, at most). UPDATE 02/01/11: I have changed my original D rating to an overall C, and changed my rating of the company's professionalism from a D to a B. This change was inspired by the fact that the owner, Mike, personally came to my home to remedy the things that I had previously cited as unsatisfactory. I didn't ask them to do this: they offered. There was no additional charge, and Mike scheduled a time that was convenient for me. I would love to give the overall experience a higher rating, but what happened initially isn't wiped out by their willingness to fix it, although I have gained a lot of respect for them for initiating the remedial work.
