I worked with Richard Griego who was referred by a realtor.  While at my home he gave me a quote of $7975.  All I needed was the actual proposal to sign and get back to him.  When I got the proposal, the price was different.  The proposal price was $8400, a $425 increase.  His email said he forgot to include the fascia boards and some kind of "tails."  I forget what he called them.  This is what he does everyday.  How could he forget to include the wood work?!?!?  He blamed it on the heat.  He meant this as a joke; but, I didn't see the humor in it.  I really wanted to move forward with this company; but, I felt I couldn't trust it.
Response from Federal Building & Roofing

"We deeply regret that we did not meet [removed member name] expectations of service. However, I would like to expand on her statement. I met with [removed member name] for the first and only time to discuss several items she wanted repaired as part of her re-roof. I then gave her a verbal estimate immediately. When I later reached the office within 4 hours of the verbal estimate, I realized that I had omitted some items from the verbal estimate. I made those changes and transmitted her the only written proposal that she received from our company. This proposal was transmitted to her within hours of our initial meeting. We are very sorry we could not honor the earlier verbal estimate but that estimate was incomplete and did not accurately reflect the work to be done."

I got lucky this time and found a gem. Federal Building and Roofing delivers what we all want and expect but seldom get --- Top quality results, excellent work ethic, reasonable price, and guaranteed work and materials. I had recent severe wind damage to my patio roof and to the roof ridge-caps, needing a new patio roof and all new ridge caps on the house. I also wanted all the fascia replaced, several wood-rotted rafter tails replaced and strengthened, a water cooler removed and the hole roofed, a gap covered and roofed between the house and an addition, and a broken electric roof vent fan replaced. As I am a widow, I have to make decisions by myself, so I researched Angie's "A" list of roofers to call for estimates. Richard Griego came to my house quickly for the estimate and understood exactly what I wanted. He explained how each item would be done and with what materials. He would prime and paint all the new wood. Richard brought a several-man crew who all worked steadily, skillfully, professionally, and neatly. I watched most of the two-day job. I know construction and I do good work myself, and I was constantly surprised and pleased that they were meeting my expectations about quality work. At the end of the first work day, they cleaned the work site thoroughly, and at the completion of the job, there was not a single nail or scrap of debris left behind. The site was left cleaner than they found it. I appreciated that all the men acted like gentlemen, were considerate and respectful. They were well-groomed and dressed in company shirts, and their trucks were clean and organized. There was no shouting, no bad language, no blaring music, and they kept the site clean. Richard has an excellent crew who all take pride in their work. I am very pleased with everything they did.  I chose wisely.

In the middle of what little rain Southern California gets, and only days after Christmas (but before New Years) the roof in my den developed a serious leak.  The roof in the den is a beautiful, open beam "flat roof" in that when you stand in my den and look up, what you see is the bottom of the roof - there's no intervening ceiling.  So, when it comes to roofing, nails are out.  Richard came out to give me an estimate for roof replacement the same day I called him.  While taking a look around he found that another roofer I'd paid the previous summer for a new roof on the rest of the house had not placed roof caps on the peak of the roof.  That was before I used Angie's List.  (There needs to be a "Anti-Angie's List for telling people who to avoid!)  At any rate, Richard fixed the roof on time, at a reasonable price, and even cleaned up the error's the previous guy made.  I have already, personally, recommended Federal Roofing to friends and will continue to do so in the near future.  Thank you, Richard!  And thank you Angie's List!

My initial call to Federal Building & Roofing was returned within just a few minutes.  Richard was happy to accommodate my work schedule and meet with me early morning to give me an estimate.   He was very professional and I liked the fact that he made suggestions such as adding additional vents.   He also said he would put shingles on top of the torchdown roofing that had to be applied on the flat part of the front of the house so that it would look like the rest of the roof. (Another roofer said it wasn't necessary.) Federal also offered a free new solar attic fan which I thought would be a great addition to my roof.  Later the same day I received by email an itemized estimate detailing all that was included in the proposal.  After accepting Federal's roofing proposal and scheduling the work about one week away,  there was only a two day delay because of rain.  I was at home for just a short while on the morning the job was started and the crew arrived promptly.  I liked that they were concerned about covering up the things inside my garage so as to leave it as clean as possible.  The first day the old shingles were  removed and plywood was replaced where needed.  The second day the inspector signed off on that part of the job and on the third day the new roof was installed.  The next day one of the crew came out to complete some painting and the last day the inspector signed off on the job.  Richard kept in constant communication with me either by phone or by email which I appreciated.  Most of the work was done without me being there.  Each day the areas around my house were left clean and in perfect order - I could barely tell from the ground that there was work being done there.  I'd had one estimate before Federal's and had one after.  Federal's estimate was not the lowest, but I was impressed with the way Richard conducted business.  The new roof is beautiful.

I've researched and met with with 4-5 other companies in Angie's List. I decided to go with Federal and its owner Richard. I was impressed with his professionalism and presentation. His bid was very competitive with others. He had a great crew. They came on time and cleaned up when they leave. And Richard returned my calls and emails promptly if I have any questions or concern. Overall, I am very happy with the job.

Richard Griego, the owner of the company was the most responsive person to come out and give us a bid. He was on time and was very knowledgeable, providing us with alot of information to consider. After he left, he emailed us his estimate that evening including a diagram of the foor area. Although we didn't go with him, we felt very confident with him and seriously considered his proposal as it was very competitive.

These people were great.  Once I contacted them here at Angie's list, Richard called me right away.  He scheduled the time to inspect the roof the next day and gave me a very good price.  I didn't even wait and we had him do it that same week.  He came with his men at the time he gave us and they were done in 2 hours.  Very proffessional. Very good quality.  My husband and I are very impressed and would recommend them to everyone.

. At first I got just two estimates for our new roof. After I got them I just happened to notice Federal Building and Roofing trucks a few blocks up the street from me doing a roofing job. I stopped and got a business card from one of the workers and when I got home the first thing I did was to check Angie's List to see if they were there. They were there with an A rating so I called the company and got Richard Griego. Richard came out the next day and gave me an estimate that was the best of the three companies. He was professional and easy to talk to. His estimate included everything unless we had to replace over 200 ft of dry rot and,or termite damage. (which we ended up having none) Then we'd have to pay for the rest. This seemed like a good deal as with one of the other companies we had to pay everything from one foot on. The second company covered any damage at all but was about $2,500 more on their cost. I'm glad to say we went with Richard and Federal. Our job got postponed a couple of times due to rain but once they started they really worked. We had a total tear off on our house and garage and they had several workers who put in 10 hour days. Start to finish was three full days.
Knowing I wanted to add a solar attic fan I bought one way in advance. Turns out that Federal gave out a free one if I was on Angie's List so they added that too at no cost. PLUS, they also installed the one I had already purchased at no cost to me. Both my wife and I were very impressed with everything. The hours they put in of non stop work. The politeness of the workers. The way Richard himself monitored the job. The way they cleaned up everything (and it was a LOT of mess to clean up with all the layers of tear off).
One more thing I should add. I mentioned that I first saw Federal doing a roofing job up the street from me. I went to that house and knocked on the door. Turned out people were renting the house but they gave me the name and phone number of the owner. I called him to get his opinion on his roofing job and he told me everything was excellent and that Federal had the best price of the estimates he had gotten also. Another thing that impressed me about Richard. Our house was built in 1941. We bought it in 1977. Over the years things had been upgraded and changed around a bit and Richard noticed that there was actually obsolete pipes and vents that had no reason to be on the roof at all. He checked out inside the house and outside to make sure but we ended up eliminating a couple of things that gave the roof a cleaner look.
All and all we would definitely use Federal Building and Roofing again and we are definitely giving them a top recommendation.

They double booked up with another roof at the same time. The guys got really stressed and were rushed to do the roof. The guy that owned the company came out to do some consulting. He was very pleasant but he didn't give them the full instructions. We had to have them back out several times. They pounded this one board in where it was all splintered, which is a good place for termites. They had some valleys and dips in the roof. They were a mess and so sloppy. They missed underlining in some spots as well. So I had to put on my roofers hat, which I don't know very well, and climb up there and look for problems. They came out and fixed what I asked for but I will never have full assurance that they did everything correctly. It was just rushed, sloppy work. The only way to find out for sure if everything is okay is if I have another roofer out. They said they were going to be here one time and they didn't show up on time and I ended up missing work. They said nice things but the work wasn't good.
Response from Federal Building & Roofing

"It is very disappointing to receive a review like this, we always strive for the satisfaction of our customers and in this instance we left the job with what we thought were satisfied customers. This work was for a Tile Relay of an existing tile roof with some fascia and sheeting repairs. Because this was an existing roof (no new sheeting installed) we could not correct sagging of existing rafters on roof. The customer had 2 chief complaints during this job. 1) tile along 2 valleys were not straight 2) and a porch’s rafters were not consistently touching the New Fascia we installed. We fixed both problems. Let me start by addressing the rating factors from the bottom up. Professionalism was always represented during this job, We kept a clean workplace, we coordinated completely with customer, and responded to all concerns. Punctuality was also represented during the entire job, once again we never canceled a single appointment, nor did we not show up when we were due to show up, nor did we show up late. Responsiveness was represented not only by meeting with customer on any and all occasions to address any concerns but in responding to those concerns by correcting any issues the customer had. Quality, as for quality of work performed, We may have fallen short of the customers expectations for quality but we would put our work against any other roofing companies work any day. Another part of quality is the materials used, in which we used the best and the highest quality of any available on the market today. Price would be subjective and comparing price without knowing other competitive bids and materials proposed would be impossible. The overall rating for a company’s work on a particular job should be viewed against all factors and in this case I believe the customers expectations were simply not met, this affected there view of all other factors. Once again, our company’s work product is superior to all other companies today."

I decided after living in my home for many years, and the recent windstorm in the Southern CA valleys, that my roof finally needed a makeover. I obtained 4 estimates, and was told by all of them that I needed the plywood base for the roof, as I guess roofs on older homes weren't necessarily built with them. Federal Building & Roofing actually came in with the lowest bid, so I decided to go with them, as I saw they had good ratings here.

The team started promptly on the scheduled start date and got a lot of work done the first day, tearing off and hauling away the old roof and clearing out the debris. Richard left me samples of the Timerline Natural Shadow shingles on the first day, and I had up until the afternoon of the 2nd day to decide on a color. The 2nd day was the sheeting inspection from the city, so not much happened that day. On the 3rd day, most of the shingling, the 2 dormer vents, and 2 attics fans were installed, with only 1 side of the house remaining. On the 4th day, the remainder of the roof was completed. And I write this on the 5th day, when the final inspection is to occur.

Richard Griego is the person who gave me the estimate, and he's also the person who I have contact with on any questions and progress on the job. He's very professional and extremely responsive. We exchange emails and phone calls daily. I had complete confidence that he would get the job done in a timely and high quality fashion.

The shingles he installed were the Timberline Natural Shadow 30-year life in Barkwood. I love the color! I am glad I went with this color as the darker contrast is nice against the cream color stucco of our house. The pictures in the brochures do not do it justice.

We have not found the money to have it done yet but the guy was very responsive and the quote was fair. He did a thorough job. I haven’t used him as far as the quality of work is concerned but he was very thorough. If I want to have the work done and when I can afford it I will certainly consider them. I really liked their professionalism. I would take a quote from them in the future.
