Our experience with this Co. was mixed. The first load of soil we got delivered. They were prompt in delivering it and all went well. The second load we picked up a couple of weeks later and split with some friends of ours. All seemed to go well at first...that is until the growing of the plants was underway. The ones planted in the first load grew pretty well (nothing spectacular) but the plants grown in the second load managed to get going for about a month and then totally crapped out. The same was true for the friends we spit the load with. Their plants made it about a month or so and then all growth ground to a halt. Both ours and theirs then just browned up gradually and died despite our pleadings with them and other efforts to salvage something of these plants. Totally different backyards in every respect (well, we both have black weber grills), same problem with the plants. Ok, so we got a bad load. Sucks but I'm sure not unmanageable. I'll just call up Hasties and try to find out what to do. Maybe have the soil tested, maybe they can tell me what I should amend it with, etc. The first call I put in was answered by a woman (sounded young) who I think I would fire if I had the intestinal fortitude to actually own a business in the first place and she worked for me and I heard her talk to a client the way she talked to me. After telling her what happened with the plants grown in the second load and her looking up the information about our first purchace (which they have on record) she asks me, and lets just say less than politely, if I have any proof that I bought the second load from Hasties. I said I didn't know if I still had the receipt but was that really an issue and she says to me, and I quote, "I'm not going to just take your word for it". Look, I have not been rude, I have not been accusatory, I have not asked for anything at this point, neither advice nor for compensation, nothing, and that is the reaction I get. First of all, I would never say this to a customer even if I truly believed they were crooks. It's just plain rude not to mention what if you are wrong? You just completely offended and alienated a customer. Secondly, look at the logic of the situation. If I'm a scheister, why would I even tell you it was the second load that the plants grew poorly in. If I'm a scheister I call up and say, you delivered a load of soil to me and it was bunk, check your records and give me my money back. No crook is gonna call up and say I got two loads of soil from you, one that you have a record of and one that you don't but don't worry, it was the one you don't have a record of that is c*** (actually, c*** would have been preferable to what they provided), So, being the passive loser customer that I am I tell her I will try to find the receipt since she can't 'just take my word for it,' and call her back. When I can't find the receipt I call back feeling a little emboldened after considering how I've just been treated and ready to "demand to speak with her manager". But, the phone is answered by a different woman who was much nicer which immediately renders my planned angry tirade into a little piddly snivel about droopy tomatoes and she tells me the guy who deals with complaints is not in but she'll have him call me Monday. Naturally, Monday comes and Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and 1 month later still no call from the guy who deals with complaints. Meanwhile, I have amended the soil with a load of composted horse manure that I got from a friend and we'll see how the tomatoes look this year. So all told, we got one good and one crappy load of soil, were treated both with great rudeness and with pleasantness. The experience almost cancels itself out.
