John Houge, the owner of Professional Roofing Services, managed two large roofing contractors in San Diego prior to starting the company in 1996. He wanted to be able to provide customers with quality, personalized service, using the finest materials, installed by talented employees who are focused on customer satisfaction.
At Professional Roofing Services, we consider our team to be a family. We care about each other, and that is reflected in the efficient and effective way we work, which translates into happy customers. Homeowners who have had their expectations met or exceeded on roof installation or repair projects refer most of our new customers to us. We would not want it any other way.
We are so proud of the work we do that in the unlikely event we do make a mistake, we will rectify it immediately…, no questions asked. That policy, in addition to our lifetime warranty on workmanship, makes a powerful statement about our quality focus.

John was very professional, clearly knew his roofing business, did a thorough inspection, took lots of pictures, and gave us a comprehensive verbal report accompanied by his pictures as examples. As a result, we were able to negotiate an excellent credit with the home sellers to take care of all the roof problems. We were very happy with his input and it was definitely worth paying for the extra inspection for the roof. We didn't pay for a formal written report but we did receive the pictures he took and also a written summary of the problems and an estimate to replace the roof. We will definitely consider this company to do the actual roofing work when we get to that point.
Description of Work: Professional Roofing Services provided an in-depth roof inspection for us prior to purchasing a new home.

The tiles were removed and stacked on the roof while the underlayment was replaced, necessary repairs were made to the wood and the facia was replaced. We were having the house re-stuccoed and because it is a two story house, John suggested he re-tile the roof once the stucco work had been done to avoid having the tiles broken and to make it easier for the stucco work to be done on the second story. We had a two day rainstorm once the underlayment was completed and before the tiles were re-installed, and the roof did not leak! Once the stucco work was completed, John provided a painter to paint the fascia and eaves, and the tiles were laid in place. The roof looks wonderful!! Additionally, John then provided a company to install rain gutters. We are very happy with the work that was done by all.
Description of Work: Removed existing roof, inspected and made all necessary wood repairs, installed double underlayments and added all new flashings and closed all under shots with mortar. Replaced all of the fascia and re-roofed using existing tiles. John also provided subcontractors to paint the fascia and eaves and install rain gutters.

So far I've only had the inspection and estimate done, but PRS has been outstanding and I will definitely be hiring them to complete the work when the time comes. We are in the process of closing on the house, & PRS has been beyond accommodating with our urgent schedule and inevitable changes to the appointment time. The options for an estimate were clearly explained & there was no pressure to select the most expensive option. We were given a thorough verbal explanation of the what the inspection revealed, while viewing the pictures that were taken during the inspection. John answered all of our questions and never made us feel like we were taking up too much of his time. All of our options for repair and replacement were explained in detail, and again, no pressure to choose a more expensive option. We were presented with a detailed written estimate at the end of the inspection that outlined every aspect of the repair work. When our Realtor requested additional information, Rebecca forwarded it to me by 8:00 the next morning, & then spent time talking with the listing agent as well. I will update this review when the work is complete, but for now, I have nothing but good things to report about PRS.

John arrived at the scheduled time, evaluated the roof, and determined that the roof was in good repair and had a lot of life in it. John was extremely professional and knowledgeable. I appreciate the time he took evaluating our roof and explaining the process to us. I would recommend him to anyone.

The owner, John Houge, personally gave the estimate and convinced me because of the limited distance between the roof line and the bathroom ceiling , I should install a skylight rather than the solatube I had planned. I'm glad I made that choice. The lead installer was named Mariano and he and his helper were excellent. Mariano answered all of my questions as I thought of them. The Solatube installation was easily accomplished without any mess left for us to clean up at all. The skylight installation also was perfectly done, in the horizontal orientation we wanted. After installation, the drywall expert Jesus, came in and installed drywall from the ceiling to the skylight. He completely smoothed, patched, and retextured the area and using our matching paint , he painted the area so that from the inside it looks as if the whole system had always been there. Clean up here also was perfectly done. My total experience with the company was outstanding and I would highly recommend their services. Finally, just as Mariano promised, we have now had a significant rainstorm and no leaks!!! And what an improvement in our lighting.
Description of Work: Install 14" Solatube in entryway. Install 2'x4', white domed, operable skylight in master bath area.

Leaving for work yesterday morning I discovered a fairly significant roof leak in the garage after the hard rain from the night before. At lunchtime I used Angie's list to call the a couple of the listed roofers. The first one said they could have someone come look at it next week to give me an estimate, the second one said they had a policy of charging $225 for someone to come out and that usually they could fix it while they were there. I asked if they had anyone that could come that day because the leak appeared to be on the garage side of the wall shared with the dining room and I was worried about additional damage if I waited. She said she would put a call out and let me know if anyone could come. I got a call at work and on my cell phone saying someone was on the way a little after 4pm. I met him there, he quickly scoped out the situation as described above and fixed it just as it was getting dark. He was professional, fast, explained things well to me, and charged what they had told me. I was thrilled.
Description of Work: The serviceman arrived, went into the attic above the (finished) garage to check out damage and take photos. He then went on the roof to inspect and take photos. He came down and said it looked like he could fix it right then for the stated cost of the $225 house/service call. He got supplies out of the truck, climbed back up and fixed it just as it was getting dark. He came down and showed me photos of the damage, and suggested what repairs I might want to do in the garage. I asked about how the roof looked overall, and he said it could use a little maintenance on some of the flashings, and I said I would call them back to get 'er done!

Older Point Loma home built in 1932 with architectural significance that had a clay tile roof that only had been repaired over the years and a flat roof 3 car garage that had been re-roofed but was not properly done as was pointed out (and it leaked). I knew that there had to be issues with the main house roof and being an older home, I wanted a contractor that was a 'craftsman' and who would do the job correctly. I had talked to 4 other roofing contractors and got comments and suggestions on their approach to doing the job. The bids were all within the same dollar range (one company no-bid). I felt that PRS was the company that would get the job done right (and I was correct). At the completion of the old roof removal, John Houge (the owner) came by and we went up onto the roof to inspect the roof condition. John's team identified the areas where there was wood rot and termite damage to the roof and structure. I wanted all damaged wood replaced and not covered over with roofing paper or tiles. Do the job right. John's team demonstrated good carpentry work. The new rafters and rafter tails were customed made. All metal flashing was new. I watched the PRS guys and it was evident that they knew what they were doing and how to do it right. One aspect of the job was the painting of the new wood and any stucco patching around the new rafters and rafter tails. I did NOT want to have to contract with a second company to 'finish' the job. John's team primed and painted new wood and metal flashing (where required) and were not sloppy with the paint. At the end of each day, the crew cleaned the area. On the garage roof , PRS replaced bad wood with new, secured the ceiling joist in several areas, corrected the drainage problem with new scuppers and installed a torch apply flat roof system. And, the tile job. It was 'clean' and looked just how I envisioned. The house looks great. On the final day, John and I went up onto the roof for a final inspection. A final comment: You can't go wrong with Professional Roofing Services.

Although we ended up doing more than we'd initially planned, my husband and I are VERY happy with not only the results (our house looks fantastic! So much brighter and cheerier than before!), but with the professionalism of John and his crew. The workers were extremely polite and highly conscientious. As the job ended up being larger than originally planned (due to the addition of the skylights) and the roofers had to wait for the painters to finish and the house to dry, the crew was a bit behind schedule. However, John brought more workers over from another jobsite after they were done for the day and the expanded crew worked additional hours 9no additional cost to us) on our house to get us on schedule. Our neighbors have all complimented us on the new look and we would not hesitate to recommend John and his crew to anyone! Rebecca and his office staff were very kind and would periodically check in to make sure we were satisfied with how things were progressing. Highly professional! Thank you!!
Description of Work: My husband and I called John to look at our roof, which had some missing tiles and other tiles that were out of place. At no charge, he did a thorough inspection and, after sitting down to discuss our needs, he gave us a multi-option estimate at various price levels, covering the gamut from just patch repair all the way up to a new roof with skylights. We also discussed repainting the wood on our house from a dark brown to a light cream, which he included in the estimate. We felt VERY comfortable with him and decided that our 25+ year old roof needed to be done correctly and so we replaced our tile roof, repainted the wood on our stucco house, replaced the sections that had water damage, and closed off part of our porch and installed skylights. In addition, John had his crew test our insulation in the attic to make sure it met standards (luckily, it did) and they installed vents in our roof so that we met regulation requirements (not done by the original builders).

Description of Work: We got a whole roof replaced and lifetime guarantee. I was impressed with this company because they did not use sub-contractors. They started on the job and had to come back the next day to finish it and during the night in between it started to rain so there was some leaking. They came out in the middle of the night to patch it up and then came the next day to finish the job, which we really appreciated.

They were prompt in their response to schedule the estimate appointment. The owner himself came out to do the estimate. I received a letter in the mail approximate three days later thanking me for the opportunity to allow them to bid for the job, information on comparing their work to others and the advantages of using them to others. Why I chose them is simple I contacted several (4-5) roofing company to get good bids, which is why most of us use Angie's List. I did not just want to get a good price bid, I wanted the quality, the most bang for my buck and that is exactly why I chose them. I really don't recall if any of the others asked how did we hear about them, they did. To me that means they care about their reputation not just the money. All of the others either wanted to do it on the spot (big red flag been there done that), only seem concerned with the affected area (possible 4' by 4') at a much higher cost, no follow up to this date and some made honest attempts at suggesting a do it yourself repair. The most important thing was that others did not seem to take the extra inspection process step or provide us (homeowners) as much information on any future roof repair problems. They were first or second so during the inspection it appeared that it was going a little bit beyond the scope of the affected area but when the repair was being made I knew then that he was right on in his assessment because I saw for myself and it confirmed. I don't usually write reviews .good or bad but as a homeowner you want to commend good work. The others well I just learn and move on. Oh and by the way THEIR PRICE was in middle of all even though they were the ONLY one doing the most.

Update: 5/26/2012: Great - no complaints....Mariano and his brother is great! These guys work diligently, with an emphasis on getting the job done right and in a timely manner! They did a great job cleaning up as well. Although we got off to a rough start with PRS, this recent experience has more than made up for this. I am pleased with the recent service, and I can attest to PRS' ability to perform all facets of roofing. They have installed, repaired and maintained my roof. They have earned my trust and a life long customer! Update (01/13/2102) This company has been non responsive. After complaining to John, they sent a project supervisor to inspect our roof; apparently John does not do inspections for warranty work or repairs. I had to show him the areas identified during the termite inspection; otherwise he had no clue for the reason of his visit. As he stepped on the roof; you could here the concrete roof tiles break, so I expected him to modify walking, but he did not. Additional tiles could be heard breaking as he continued his inspection. As of today, PRS has not followed up and I will proceed with contacting another roofing contractor. Very disappointing service for apparently a stellar performer on Angie's list. A lifetime warranty from this company is worthless! ***************************************************************************************************************************************** Well, it has now been 6 weeks since my initial call. The first time, Angela did not call back as she said she would; and a few weeks went by before I called again. They have now cancelled "scheduled" appointments three times - all on the same day as the appointment. Today, I received a call from Angela informing me that John would not make the appointment scheduled for this morning; but that Mariano would come out; however, I was also informed that they would put my request in the repair file, and contact me later to schedule an appointment - apparently they are too busy. Needless to say, what a BIG disappointment! Be advised that although I indicated I would not use this company again, I would like them to honor their lifetime installation and workmanship warranty - and this would change my evaluation. I will eventually move on; however, to a responsive roofer. So if a lifetime warranty is what you are after - be advised.
Description of Work: Update: 5/26/2012 PRS performed warranty work, as well as repair and routine maintenance on the roof they originally installed in2001. Work included inspect and replace damaged tiles (owner supplied); replacement deteriorated fascia, caulk roof penetrations. I am very pleased with work performed and feel as if my roof is good for another 10 years. So if a lifetime warranty is what you want...PRS deserves serious consideration...thank you John! Professional Roofing Services replaced our roof Sept 2001- it wasn't the best experience then; but for the most part, the roof has been leak free. They did come a year later and fix flashing around the perimeter. In early August 2011 we had our home inspected for termites, at that time, the inspector identified several areas of dry rot around the perimeter of the roof, the company that performed the inspection, suggested we contact a roofer for repairs. So, I decided to contact John at Professional Roofing Services to have them come out, take a look, and since the roof is now 10 years old, also have them perform an inspection on the rest of the roof, particularly the roof vents/penetrations. When I contacted Professional Roofing Services , I spoke with Angela and I explained the reason I was calling them, said she would look up our file and call me back -

As a single women homeowner , I appreciated John's detailed written explanation and proposal of the entire process. He was courteous and professional and patiently answered all my questions. I received 3 roofing quotes from companies listed on Angie's List. Even though Professional Roofing was the highest quote received I felt confident that I knew exactly what I would be getting and that the workmanship would be high quality. All my expectations were met . One of the quotes received from another roofer recommended I replace all my existing skylights. Since three of my existing sky lights were replaced less than 3 years ago I felt the other roofer's recommendation was unnecessary . John said my skylights were perfectly fine and this recommendation alone saved me hundreds of dollars. His crew was outstanding. They were prompt, hard working and very courteous. Overall it was a very good experience.

We chose John and PRS over other similar cost bids because we thought we were getting superior workmanship and materials plus responsive customer service. John was very helpful in his schedule to allow for plumbing, Air conditioning and insulation work to be accomplished during the reroof process (flat roof house with no attic). He also suggested a reflective roof coating that I could apply that would extend the life of the roof and sold it to me at his cost. The demolition crew showed up on time and made quick work of removing the old roof. They were very careful to protect our plants and artificial turf during the demo process and did an excellent job of cleaning up before departing. The roofing crew removed plywood sheathing so the plumbing and A/C workers had access under the roof to run their pipes. They also identified and repaired water damaged wood. The roofing process lasted about 2 and ½ days as I watched closely what the workman were doing. The only problem I had was the initial installation of the wrong size metal edge cap on part of the house. Once I told the foreman that this was a problem it took several hours to regroup, remove the wrong size metal and replace more wood before installing the correct size metal. Because there was a slight chance of rain during reroofing, the crew covered the entire house with plastic every night at the completion of work. Unfortunately, there was a hole in one of the plastic sheets and we had some light rain that caused minor water damage which John compensated me for in the final billing. Daily cleanup by the crew was OK, but the final cleanup was excellent with all tar removed from the edge metal and they even cleaned out all the gutters. Overall I feel the workmanship and materials used were excellent. The main detractor I had with hiring PRS was dealing with John. We were told during John?s sales pitch that he would be making daily inspections at the job site. On the first day of demolition, John did show up and informed me that he would be out of town for the remainder of the job and any problems would be handled by Peggy his office manager. Not what I signed up for! At the completion of the job, both the job foreman and Peggy told me that John would be by the following week for a final inspection ? never happened ? have not heard from or seen John since the first day of the job. It is not like it would be hard for him to stop by as he only lives 2 blocks from my house. Move ahead two months and it is now warm enough to apply the roof coating I purchased through John. I called PRS with a question for John about application and was told by the receptionist that she would pass John the message and have him call me. I called back two days later and asked again if John could call me and never heard a thing back from PRS. I visited a local roofing supply and got my questions answered and purchased additional coating material and finished the roof coating job. From reading the other reviews, I am not the only customer to have experienced poor follow up and/or communication from John.

I really take no joy in having to write this less than review. While I believe that I ultimately ended up with a decent roof, the process getting there was nothing short of painful! I received six estimates to have my roof replaced and insulation added. I believed that this would be a positive experience based upon the majority of Angie?s feedback and Professional Roofing?s BBB rating. I even selected Professional Roofing over less expensive estimates because I wanted quality work and to avoid complication and hassle. While his ratings are good, I am left to wonder just what the heck happened with my project. My experience certainly did not mirror other high ratings that this company has received. There was a definite lack of quality control, limited to no supervision of the crew, and very poor communication by the owner. While John was very professional, amicable and thorough during the estimate process, all of that went out the window once the project started. Every day there seemed to be a new problem and excuse. To begin, with I was told that the entire inside of the home would be covered and taped down with plastic to catch the falling debris during the tear off. While the crew did casually drape plastic over the inside on the first morning, tape was not used initially, so once the old wood was torn off, the wind created a swirling/blowing tornado effect on the inside of the house causing the plastic and debris to swirl everywhere. The crew came in and cleaned up a bit, and retarped using tape this time, but a lot of it fell back down. It was not until the third day, when the kitchen had to be tarped for a THIRD time that they finally got it right. I expected this would be messy, but their laziness in not tarping off things the right way from the beginning created a much bigger mess. John assured me that the following morning the crew would blow the remaining debris from the top of the roof and blow up from the inside of the house since there was debris caught between the slats. I work at home and to avoid the mess and noise inside, I went to my car to work. Because I was sitting in the front of my house, I saw their coming and goings and noticed that no attempt had been made to blow the roof inside or out and yet they were starting to screw in the rigid insulation on top of debris. I left a message for John and also called his office and spoke with the office assistant, and asked that she get a hold of John. I also pulled one of the workers into the house to show him that there were leaves, pine needles and old roofing material embedded between the wood slats. Shortly after, a worker went inside with a blower and another went on top of the roof and they did what they were supposed to do originally. However, if I had not been there (as many people can?t be), the crew would have laid the rigid insulation right over the top of the debris and I would have never known better. I assume that John was in touch with his crew about this issue but he didn?t bother to call me directly. When the workers left for lunch, I went on the roof and see how things were progressing. I noticed that some of the rigid insulation was tightly fitted against the next piece but some of it wasn't and was pretty sloppy. Yet, they were still moving ahead and covering it over with the plywood. One of the pieces with the largest gap was already screwed down and covered with the plywood; there was no confusion on my part about it being in place and attached already. I understand that you have to cut out around pipes, vents, etc. But this piece was not around a vent or pipe?it was just a case of unsupervised workers doing a shoddy job and not precision cutting/fitting. There is certainly no point in paying for insulation if there are large gaps with no insulation. When the crew returned from lunch, I pulled one of them aside to show them the gaps, and ask them to fix. Again, I left a message for John, but he did not return my call. This was the second concern that I had on this day, and yet NO follow up from him. At this point, I was rather annoyed, as it was not my job to ensure quality control or supervise his crew. I sent him an e-mail and explained my issues. At 5:10 p.m., he showed up at my house acting if nothing was wrong. At that point, I told him to just check his e-mail since he was incapable of returning calls in a timely manner. I had left 3 messages for him over a time span of about 9 hours and heard nothing! He responded to my e-mail that evening, apologizing and said the following: ?I had a meeting this morning and was in appointments all over after that. And as you know I have multiple jobs going on at once. None of the issues you are commenting on are problematic of our work or the effectiveness of the roofing system?. I think his words say it all and identify the real problem. This company has too many jobs going at once and the owner is unable to supervise them! He proceeded to tell me in his e-mail response the following gems of advice (things you would never say to a customer paying thousands of dollars): ?If you feel the need to micro manage our work, so be it. I will still hold up our work against any one. I really would like for you to be happy with what we are trying to do, but that lies in your hands to lighten up a little?. Who is the customer here? Shouldn?t my concerns be addressed in a timely manner and without insults? He had no problem answering the phone when he was trying to get my business. At the end of the second day, I noticed that the lights in my kitchen were not working. I immediately put a call into the electrician. When the electrician came out on day three, he informed me that he was 100% certain that the roofers had screwed through his wiring on the roof. Again, I put a call into John and it just went into voice mail. So, I called the office number and put Peggy, the office assistant, on the line with the electrician so he could explain. Within 10-15 minutes, the electrician received a call back from John. The roofers were instructed to tear up the portion of roof that had been completed over the kitchen so that the electrician could find the source of the break in the wiring. Mind you, it was the electrician who had to ask the roofers to come inside and retarp over the area being torn up again (the third and only time it was actually tarped correctly). As it turned out, the roofers had nailed/screwed into the electrical wiring in THREE places. And again, one my biggest frustrations was John?s delayed response. He might have been talking to his crew and my electrician, but he didn?t bother to call me to update what was going on until 11:30 a.m. If the roofing crew had just take 5-10 extra minutes to draw out on top of the insulation and plywood where the wiring was running underneath, a whole lot of time and money could have been saved. Earlier in the day, when I questioned John about reusing materials that had just been torn up, he told me, ?you are not a roofer? implying that I couldn?t possibly know what was going on. Well, I may not be a roofer, but I certainly know when things are being done without care and in a half-a** manner. Because of the electrical screw up on the third day, the roofers had to stay rather late ? it was after 7pm when they left and no one bothered to communicate when they would be back to finish the job. A message was left with John on Saturday with no call back. Finally, Sunday evening, I received an e-mail from John ? ? I will give you a call to let you know when we will come out for the pick-up work, if there is anything you need us to do just let me know. I will have a copy of the change order for wood repair Monday?. Monday, without the work being done yet, that change order did arrive with a shocking $555 additional amount due over the original estimate. Since the ceiling is open beam, it was very easy to go around and see exactly how much wood was used and measure it myself. The change order showed more wood than was actually replaced. I sent an e-mail asking for explanation on how this figure was arrived at and said that we would need to walk the project and he could see for himself that his crew did not use that much would (even with accounting for the waste). When the crew came back on Tuesday to do the remaining work, they were on the roof with the blower and I was sitting in my living room when I noticed that debris started coming in around the skylight. I went up on the roof and discovered yet another mistake. They had forgotten to put the rubber seal/strip under the skylight (allowing small particles once kicked up by the blower to come in the house). Again, if I hadn?t been there, literally sitting in my living room, I would never have made the connection that the work with my skylight had not been done properly. John came out at the end of the day to check everything (including the wood usage) and I asked him about the permit. He told me after the whole project had been completed that they didn?t actually pull a permit. He and I specifically talked about pulling a permit and how the gas line would have to be moved because it might cause a problem wigth the inspector. If he decided at some point that a permit wasn?t necessary, I should have been informed of this change since the expectation had already been set that this was going to be done. At this point, I just threw my hands up in frustration. After that, he did say that he would cancel the change order for the wood to offset the myriad of problems. We have had a good rain since the roof was completed and it hasn?t leaked. We have also had some cooler weather to test the insulation and I can say that the house is much warmer. I know that there are glitches with every major project - I have owned many houses and am well aware of this. However, this company is overextended and needs to focus on communication and quality.
