Roofing, Skylights, Insulation,

About us

John Houge, the owner of Professional Roofing Services, managed two large roofing contractors in San Diego prior to starting the company in 1996. He wanted to be able to provide customers with quality, personalized service, using the finest materials, installed by talented employees who are focused on customer satisfaction. At Professional Roofing Services, we consider our team to be a family. We care about each other, and that is reflected in the efficient and effective way we work, which translates into happy customers. Homeowners who have had their expectations met or exceeded on roof installation or repair projects refer most of our new customers to us. We would not want it any other way. We are so proud of the work we do that in the unlikely event we do make a mistake, we will rectify it immediately…, no questions asked. That policy, in addition to our lifetime warranty on workmanship, makes a powerful statement about our quality focus.

John and his crew were amazing. John gave me excellent recommendations on improving attic ventilation and gave me an estimate the same day. Once scheduled, they worked with me and around some ongoing stucco work to get the job started on time and coordinated the work well despite problems with the suppliers. The results are outstanding, both aesthetically and from a performance standpoint. I'm having John back to install a low slope roof and gutters as soon as the trim gets painted. Well done!

Professional Roofing services is a professional, well-run company with experienced staff. From the beginning, the teams were on time, non-smoking, CLEAN, courteous and always smiling. The work was completed on-time. I am used to setting low expectations for any type of construction crew. After meeting John, I decided to raise my expectations. He exceeded those. He expects perfection from his crew and is constantly monitoring the progress. If things are not perfect, his teams re-do them. Regarding the roof: the process was explained to me, including the potential challenges that might be found. When old wood damage was found, John climbed up to the roof, took pictures of all of it, the good and the bad, and showed me before fixing anything. A received a change order for approval before the work was done. Regarding the patios: we discussed general ideas on what could be done regarding design, space and structure. i then sent John tons of pictures. From there, we agreed on a design, and agreed that as we moved through the process we would have some fluidity to change things as they happened. This flexibility was nice as they were building the patios because once I saw what was happening, I could make better decisions on lighting, materials and color. Use them. They're awesome!
Description of Work: Remove solar panels to tear down and replace roof. re-install solar panels. Tear down and re-build existing patio; custom, air patio. Tear down and re-build adjacent existing patio; custom, wood. All associated electrical, painting, carpentry, stucco and finishing work.

Always on time. Very polite and responsive to any questions or issues. This was huge job and they worked all days even both weekend days to get it done in a timely manner. Even took away our old patio cover the same day with ho advance notice when we asked. They were in good contact by email before hand explaining the process and what to expect.. We did have to wait almost a month before they could do the job because they were so busy and booked up but it was worth it.

It went well. There was good communication throughout. We appreciated that they coordinated the roofing and the solar (they also do window replacement but we did not do that at this time). There solar costs were higher than comparatives, but their roofing replacement cost was much lower so we opted to use them as the totals were similar compared to using two companies. Their solar product is high quality. We had problems with SDG&E crediting our solar initially (not the roofers issue), and they did come do our home and get on the phone with us to resolve the issue. We are good to go now. $11.00 electric bills, woohoo!

PRS were truly professional from my initial contact with them through after the roof was complete. Jacqui and Marissa in the office were great at communication -- always quick to return my calls, update me on project status, follow up with any paperwork or contracts. John came out to assess our roof, took time to thoroughly inspect the roof, explain the products that they use (other contractors I got quotes from did not, and did not even measure--said they could just get that info online). Work was done well and in a timely manner. Crew was polite, effective and clean. They took pictures and showed me the damaged parts of the old roof and woodwork. The cost was a little more than quoted, however in the initial quote we discussed and agreed beforehand that may be a possibility once we uncovered what woodwork had to be replaced (thanks to termites in San Diego! However now we don't need to treat for termites anytime soon.). And no work was done or costs increased without discussion or my agreeing to it first. There was an issue with the truck so work had to be delayed a day or so, but it did not impact anything negatively and we were informed every step of the way. John came out to follow up after the job was complete to check everything out, answer questions and make sure we were satisfied. The roof and work are guaranteed. I definitely recommend PRS and would use them again (and probably will with our other house).

The owner, John Houge, originally gave us an estimate of $15,000 to replace the old roof but mentioned that it could be more depending on any damage discovered once the two existing roofs were removed. He found rot/termite damage on a few rafters and plywood and fascia that needed to be replaced before they could install the new roof. Mr. Houge also suggested we have a pitch installed on the flat roof garage because previous repairs did not work and the garage would leak after a short time. With all the extra work and materials involved the price increased dramatically. After we got over the sticker shock Mr. Houge kept us apprised every step of the way. He is truly a professional and would not allow any substandard workmanship or materials done by fly-by-night repairman and would not continue with the roof until these inadequacies were properly addressed and up to code. From the first day on the job the workers showed up bright and early and worked until dusk.. They were courteous and respectful. . They always cleaned up after themselves and used magnets to make sure no nails were left in the yard.. We are very happy with our new roof.
Description of Work: Tore off two existing roofs. Removed and repaired plywood and a few rafters due to either dry rot or termite damage. Replaced about 300 feet of fascia. Replaced roof with an asphalt shingle product. Put a pitch on the garage which was originally flat. Replaced all tin surrounding the roof.

The project is now finished, and the roof looks great and the solar panel system is operating as expected. From what I can tell, all aspects of the project were properly completed with excellent workmanship and expertise. In terms of the project my thoughts are that these guys do an absolutely fantastic job at roofing. I was impressed with how they left the job site, and how hard working and courteous the crews were (including asking if I wanted them to work on Christmas -- which of course, I did not -- but they asked). That said, they are not the cheapest company out there. I believe you get what you pay for, and when I'm paying a premium I expect everything to be perfect. In terms of workmanship they met my expectations, but there were some issues however. The two primary issues were related to timing/estimates and communication. My expectation based on communication from PRS was that, from start to finish, the entire project would require 10 working days, 14 on the outside. From start to finish, the job took 4 months (including over a month for the net metering contract to be approved) -- physical work on the house took 2.5 months. That's quite the difference. Being generous I counted 15 potential working days lost to rain, but even if there were 30 works days lost to rain -- and just counting the physical work portion that's still a difference of more than 100% of the estimated time. The roofing portion of the job started on time and made great progress within that deadline. Once it came time to start installing the solar there was a very long, unacceptable delay. When I wrote and called to discuss my concerns about job progress, I was told a few things at various times: (1) that no one had ordered the solar materials until it was actually time to put them on the roof -- as opposed to when I signed the contract, or even when they started work, so there was a long delay waiting for materials to arrive (during the holidays); (2) that I had misunderstood their timing quote and that solar projects are on a totally different timeline (apparently no one bothered to distinguish this); (3) that the rain was the delay and that some customers just can't be made happy no matter how hard the company tries (this came from Chad Fuller; notwithstanding the fact that in all my communication I had made clear, and reiterated over and over again, that I was excluding the rain delays from my concerns, and that even allowing for the rain, they still weren't keeping to schedule -- and I am doing the same in this review); and (4) that the rain had caused them back-office and other issues and that they couldn't get back to my project after the rain went away for a week or more because they had to deal with those issues. During this, I kept struggling to get detailed updates as to what was going on. When I got to story #4, that's about when I had lost it. I had been dealing with Chad and Marisa on the project up to then. Luckily for PRS, they also have John (the primary owner, I think Chad and Marisa may also be partial owners) watching over everything. I immediately escalated the issue to John directly and got him involved and made him aware of my concerns. From that point on everything improved pretty dramatically. Once the heavy rain stopped, he figured out how to get workers back onto my roof without the 1-2 week delay I was told would occur, and once the solar equipment arrived, he made sure it went up very quickly. There were still some communication breakdowns (I ask a lot of questions and I keep on top of my contractors), but thereafter I immediately expressed any issues to John and they were instantly resolved. Frankly, John's involvement prevented this review from going from a positive to a negative. Once we got over the mid-project hiccups, and aside from those issues, I couldn't be happier with the end result. So far the delays have not caused any problems. One important point to note that they did a full re-roof during excessively heavy and prolonged periods of rain, and there was never any leak or issue with the house or project during that. They made sure my house was water-tight at all times, and that the rain and winds would not do any damaged to any exposed portions of the house or materials. That's the type of workmanship that I am praising above. I intend for this to read as a positive overall review, with some constructive criticism for the contractor: (i) make sure to communicate clearly, fully, and completely from start to finish, (ii) be responsive to e-mails at all times, (iii) make sure that the parties responsible for ordering materials do so with more than sufficient lead-time for them to not cause delays; and (iv) make sure to keep your subs well coordinated so that days aren't lost transitioning between various portions of the project. That said, every worker, and every sub at the job site did an absolutely fantastic job workmanship-wise. I recommend this contractor and will use them again should there be any need in the future.

Very professional when coming out giving estimate, work was completed and the roof was beautiful. We were working with PACE Program, using two different programs, HERO and YGreen. The roofer needed to wait until solar was installed (2 weeks) because we needed to sign on on the entire project. Roofer had financed our job and needed to take out short term financing. As a result, he sent us a letter stating he was putting a lien on our home. Marisa in the office was great to work with in the beginning however, when this financing issue occurred, she wasn't.

Very professional operation. Chad Fuller took the time to fully explain the condition of my existing roof and the available products and financing options. I had 2 other companies provide estimates and neither provided the information that Chad provided. The workers came on time and worked very hard each day. They had most of the roof removed the first day. The next day they had replaced the tung & groove wood on the patio roof and over half of the main roof done. They cleaned the site each day and removed all trash daily, I WOULD highly recommend the company to all my friends and family.

Hired them to install a new roof and take off original 30-year old tile roof. The project went very well. They replaced a lot of damaged wood and even painted it to match perfectly. I also had to very old skylights. They installed my new one I could buy off the shelf and said they will install my custom-made skylight when it arrives. I'm currently waiting for a response now that my custom skylight has been delivered. I had also asked them to take out skylights that were in my patio roof. They made it look like the skylights were never there! Great job! I'm relieved this is done and know they will help in the future should any issues with my roof come up; although I highly doubt that. Thanks Chad and PRS!

John, the owner of the company, came to check out our home and give us an estimate of the cost of the job that we wanted done: Roof removed and replaced, fascia replaced on the front and added on the back of the house, gutters replaced on the front and added on the back of the house, balcony resurfaced, and gutters added for the balcony. They also removed and replaced a skylight and removed old solar panels on the roof. John also recommended a HERO loan that his staff would help us process. This did not work out for us, mainly because our mortgage is atypical. We paid a $1,000 deposit, and they came to do our roof on the appointed day, and started with a tear off taking the old roof off down to the wood. They contacted us with a $3,500 change order to replace dry rot and termite damaged wood. This was not unexpected and included as a possibility in the original estimate. We ok'ed that and the roof was completed in about 4 days, including an unexpected Sat. They cleaned up each day after work, so it was easy to live around the roofing job. The balcony resurfacing went quickly and they did an amazing job! Our biggest concern was that they presented us with the bill without doing the gutter work. We had a meeting with John, when he came to do the final inspection/review, and he admitted that we had paid for the gutter job also, and it would take a few more days to get the gutter work done. The gutters were done on the roof, and done very well per our specifications, but the gutters for the balcony were omitted. We called the company, and John returned our call saying that the balcony gutters were in fact included, but there had been miscommunication with the gutter installers. The full job took about 21/2 weeks and we were extremely satisfied with the excellent quality of work, trustworthiness of the workers, and the way the workers cleaned up after each day. Our only warning is to be sure that everything that you talk to John about is written in the contract, and that you remind him about each portion of the contract. We highly recommend this company and the quality of their work.

Chad came out in December for an estimate to do a lift and lay. I had a leak in the roof. He took pictures and showed me the problem areas. They scheduled for the last part of January. I was told by Chad and Marissa I should be home on the first day because there would be a change order written once the tiles were removed and they determined what the cost of extra wood etc. would be. That I would be able to see the damaged wood that was removed. This cost would be added to my original estimate. I stayed home from work on the first day they started. No one ever knocked on the door or called me. Around 4:30pm I called the office to see why I was not brought a change order. Marissa said she would have Chad call me. He told me I must have misunderstood and I was not told I had to be home. Needless to say, I never saw any damage, but the change order added an additional $1,700.00 to my cost. On the second day of repair work it started drizzling in the afternoon. When the noise outside stopped, my son went outside to see what was going on and the workers were in my backyard drinking what appeared to be beer in quart bottles. He asked them if their boss knew what they were doing. They didn't respond, but left the premises within 5 minutes. The workers did a nice job on the roof and are very hard workers. The roof looks good. The ad in the Angie's list monthly is deceptive and misleading, as it states in the ad "deal directly with owner John Houge". The only people I dealt directly with were his daughter Marissa and son in law Chad. That information should be taken out of the ad.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. I do apologize for the misunderstanding about your availability. We have taken your note and applied it to how we describe the need to be able to speak to customers the day the job starts. We appreciate that you see how hard our employees work and that the quality of our work speaks for itself. To address your point about they day it was raining, our employees were off the clock, however, we agree that their choices were not appropriate. Considering how hard our staff works, they get a little excited when they get a rain delay once every 200 days. I apologize that it caused you to think negatively. We do appreciate your business. We are glad, however, that you can appreciate the quality of the work we do and hopefully, that reflects more of our pride in what we do and how we run our company. Although, you did not have an opportunity to speak with John, he is available to every customer. We are a family run company, so whether you speak to Marisa, Chad or John, you are dealing with ownership. We equally take pride is taking care of our customers.

I called to schedule the evaluation and installation. The owner came out to do the site survey. He brought samples to discuss options. I showed what I wanted and where: a skylight in the livingroom, which is on the north side and somewhat dark, and a couple solar tubes in the upstairs bathroom, which has no windows and is very dark. We discussed the size and location of the skylight, and he provided valuable information to help with the decision process: I decided on a 4x4 foot window mounted in the center, but high enough so that I wouldn't see the fireplace chimney. We discussed the window options, and I selected a gas filled, two pane, tempered glass window, with UV coatings and a light grey tint, with a crank to open the window. Then walk did the same for the solar tubes, and he recommended one 14" tube instead of two 10" tubes, it would do as good a job lighting the space but cost less. Then we talked about the installation process: about 2 days of work spread out over 3 or 4 days. We scheduled the start date, which was about 3 weeks out. We completed the contract and I paid a $1000 1st payment. On day one, as scheduled, a small crew came out and installed the solar tube 1st, then cut the outside of the roof, framed the opening, built the box, and installed the light. The interior drywall remained in place. The next day one guy showed up the do the flashing and roofing. The next day, Friday, a drywall guy came out to cut the inside whole and drywall the tunnel. On Monday, the drywall guy came back out to paint and finish the skylight. A couple days later the owner called and came out to accept the final payment. He inspected the results and we tested the window crank. The window seemed to be catching on something. He inspected it and found a couple clips to hold the screen were not in place, so he fixed it on the spot. A week later I noticed some cracks in the drywall paint and called them. They scheduled the drywall guy to come back out and look at it. He checked for leaks and found none, everything was dry. He said that sometimes the fresh wood they put in can have a little moisture, that can migrate through the drywall and affect the paint in this was. He repaired the surface and said he be back out in a couple days the repaint, which he did.

For a job of this magnitude it went awesome. I picked the right contractor for the job. Apologies to John and co for the delay in writing this review. My son was born a few weeks after the install so it has been a busy year. I was impressed by the attention to detail and the painting of the wood that was replaced was a real plus for me. I suspect this may not be the cheapest company you may find. I think other companies would have not replaced the previously termite infested wood but long term I strongly believe I chose the best option here. The painting was another plus. It was high up on my two story home so if no painting happened I would have needed to get another contractor to finish the job. John was a one stop shop in this regard and I really appreciate that aspect of the service. There were some downsides in terms of cleaning up post install debris but you would get this with any roof removal of this magnitude and I thought PRS did a good job here. If I had to do it again though I might have done the following to aid the process: * don't remove everything in the garage but make it so that when the guys are putting plastic sheeting over your stuff, your stuff is arranged in such a way that it is easy to get the plastic over it. IE: remove stuff off the top shelf of a shelving unit perhaps - pack away any loose stuff. Just imagine yourself placing the plastic wrap over things, massive amounts of roof debris coming down, and see how it would resolve. Anyhow, even though I did nothing here, and am a stage 1 hoarder, I still did not have to do that much vacuuming and post-cleaning in the garage! * there was also some debris in my AC outside unit. I saw they had plastic wrap over that initially but later it left. I think if I had to do this again I would have shut the AC system down for the duration of the job and informed them of this fact so they could just leave the plastic in place. IE: how do they know the system won't just come back on! Just a tip here. I did open up my outside AC unit and vacuumed all the roof stuff in there. * there was some debris in my kitchen vent over the stove. I was concerned when I first turned it on (loud noise) but then it stopped and has been working fine ever since so a non-issue. Anyhow, this was the extent of the debris annoyance which again, you would get with any contractor for something like this. Hope this helps someone reading. John also worked very well with my solar contractor (REC Solar at the time, now part of Sunrun) and coordinated the stand off install before the final roof went on. In close, I found John to be very knowledgeable on all things roofing. I think he has the best process and I highly recommend using him.
Description of Work: Installed new wood underlay. Installed high end shingles on my approx 2600 sq ft two story home. Installed "whirly birds" and various vents on the roof. Replaced AND painted! lots of termite infested wood trim. Removed two layers of old roof - including original wood shingles.

On schedule. Change order necessary and it really increased the price, disproportionately in my opinion.
