John Cadman replaced the bent hinges on the door of my Jenn-Air double-wall oven (the lower oven). The hinges had been damaged by the previous owner either slamming the door downward upon opening, or by placing a heavy roasting pan on the door.
John made an initial site visit to evaluate and assess the damage in person. During that visit he displayed competency and considerable knowledge of not only ovens in general but of the door mechanism. He informed me that, in addition to the hinges, he might have to replace the "receivers" because, in his experience, these also get damaged as a result of the abuse that typically bends the door hinges.
He fairly gave me an approximate price. He could not tell me the exact price of the replacement parts. He said he would check and let me know. A few days later his wife Jill (they are the team that comprises Harbor Area Appliance Service) called me to say the parts have arrived and to schedule an appointment. She gave me a window of time. Several hours before the 1:00pm appointment time, she very responsibly called to say John would be there between 2:00 and 5:00pm. This was perfectly fine with me because, during our initial conversation, she said she would call in advance to keep me apprised of John's arrival time. Additionally, John himself called me when he was on his way. Very responsible and organized....
John arrived at around 2:45pm. The repairs were accomplished in 30 minutes. John was careful in his work, not rough nor sloppy like so many people with whom I've dealt in appliance repair, home construction etc. Before he started, he lay down a thick mover's blanket on my kitchen floor to ensure no damage would occur to the natural stone flooring. This was not an afterthought nor was it a result of any request from me. He brought the blanket with him from his van when he first entered my house. This was a nice touch. In my opinion this action reflects his consideration, forethought, professionalism and pride in the quality of work.
John indicated that in fact the oven door "receivers" looked to be in excellent condition and did not need to be replaced. He just chucked the parts back in his bag and said "So I'll just return these parts; we don't need them." He adjusted the amount due to subtract the price of the receivers.
Upon completing the installation of the new parts and the re-assembly of the door onto the oven, John wiped the oven door with a rag, cleaned the rails, hinges and the door itself and picked up his tools and the heavy movers blanket. He gave me a detailed receipt for payment in full and we chatted for a few minutes before he went on his way.
John is a very pleasant, down-to-earth person. He was not abrupt, nor was he eager to just bolt upon getting paid. We talked for several minutes about nothing in particular. Well, to be honest, I was talking to him even while he was doing the repair. I'm sure he would have finished the repair more quickly if he was not pleasantly engaged in conversation, but he was very friendly and never made me feel that he was annoyed with the distraction. Incidentally, his wife, Jill, who works in the office (you will talk to her when you call), is also very pleasant and cheerful.
Overall, I am very pleased with Harbor Area Appliance Services. I have already placed their little magnetic business card on my oven control panel. If I need to repair any of my appliances -- refrigerator, ovens, dishwasher, etc. -- I will call them first.
