Just like they did to the reviewer on May 1st, Moxie came to our door stating they were providing pest control for our neighbor and wanted to know if we were interested in the deal. At first we rejected the offer, but the sales guy asked if he could show us something, and proceeded to show us Brown Widow Spiders and their eggs in our yard. This convinced my wife -- who is terrified of spiders -- to sign up for the service. The sales guy did tell us the cost of the original service the following day and the quarterly service fee, but stated that we were encouraged to stay with Moxie for 12 months; however, we could discontinue at any time without any penalty.
A Moxie employee treated our yard the next day, and did not appear to do a very thorough job. He was supposed spray all around the exterior of the house, and destroy all spider webs and their eggs. Almost immediately after he left, we discovered untreated webs and eggs which after a few weeks, were back all over our yard.
We notified Moxie and they scheduled a complimentary follow up treatment the next day. A different employee treated our yard, and really did a great job at working the exterior of our house. He spent roughly twice as long as the employee who originally treated our yard, and covered every hard to reach space spraying while destroying spiders and their eggs. In less than a week, we started to notice the return of some spider webs and began to question the quality of the spider killing agent in the spray Moxie uses.
The following week, roughly one month after our initial contact with the sales guy knocking on our door, Moxie called to schedule our quarterly service. A few days later, a third employee showed up at our door. We explained to him that our yard had been treated one week prior, and we were already seeing spiders and their eggs. We showed him webs in the yard, pointed out areas where we saw eggs, and mentioned that they were especially heavy around our trash cans. The last thing he said to us was that he would get everything and would be sure to eradicate all the spiders in the area of our trash cans. This time, we did not stay at the house as the Moxie employee treated our yard.
When we returned home, the Moxie employee was gone and we found a bill for $119 on our door. We walked around our yard and found every single spider web we pointed out to the employee was still to be found, and the area around the trash cans was still infested with spiders and their eggs.
We decided to cancel the service. When we called Moxie, the representative tried to convince us to stay with them, and offered to have an employee come out and treat our yard the following day. We explained that within a month, they had treated our yard three times, and failed to keep away spiders -- the primary selling point to my wife. The representative then said we would be penalized $120, but would not have to pay the $119 we were billed. We argued that their sales rep explained it to us differently (however, when we looked at the contract we signed we found the clause that stated we would be penalized -- shame on us).
We considered paying the $119 invoice for Moxie to keep coming back and ineffectively spraying for the rest of the quarter, and do the same thing for the remaining three quarters of our annual commitment, or spend one more dollar to end it all now. We chose to cancel.
