J C Penney Furniture

The dining set was a good price and looked good in the store. The saleswoman had little information about it except that it was imported. Delivery was an additional $110 or so - fairly standard for delivery I think. The table was delivered on time by two competent independent delivery men. Right away I saw flaws in the manufacture of the chairs and called to have 2 of them replaced. Phone service was consistently friendly and helpful. The 2 replacement chairs were delivered a week later but were no better than the first ones, and the fabric didn't quite match, so I called to have them replaced again. By then I had also discovered that the leaf mechanism in the table was inoperable and had to call Penney's for service on that. The technician came a week later and managed to open the table and remove the leaf, but agreed it was essentially inoperable. And when the leaf was removed a stained-over but significant nick in the edge of the table was revealed. At this point I had about had it and requested that Penney's pick up the whole set and issue a refund. A very long phone call later (including waiting while the tech consulted a supervisor), it was agreed that Penney's would accept the set for return. This was an exception to Penney's no-returns policy for furniture, so it took a lot of time and explanation. I am still responsible for the initial delivery charge. Bottom line - don't buy furniture at J C Penney's without a LOT of research into country of origin, quality, return and refund policies, etc. It is worth your time and money to spend more and buy better.
