We just had some plumbing and carpentry work done and it was started by PRC Restoration. I was concerned about what appeared to be a leak on the bathroom floor in the master bedroom. It was one of those kinds of leaks that you could argue was from the shower, so I didn't pay a lot of attention to it until it got to the point where the floor was wet. I called the plumber and they came out and said that the work that needed to be done was not something that they did and so they recommended PRC Restoration in Signal Hill and I had them come out. They brought in a crew of people that took the bathroom apart, found out where all the leaks were, and brought in their equipment and set it all up which included some heaters, some dryers, and some evaporators. They put up an enclosure in the master bathroom and ran their equipment for 4 days 24/7. At the very beginning the guy that's running this crew (who's name I didn't keep) brought out a contract for me to look at and sign. He just pointed out and said sign here, sign here, and sign here. I'm concerned about the leak so I'm not really completely paying attention to what I signed, but he verbalized what the crew would do, get rid of the moisture and the mold and then restore the bathroom to an operating condition. Well in fact it didn't say that on the contract. All it said on the contract was that they would take care of the mold and the moisture and leave me with deciding whether or not to use them to restore the bathroom to the previous condition before the leak started. Well, they charged me for that work which included two guys coming in and building an enclosure, taking wallboard out to find out where it was leaking, and ripping up the fascia board off the bottom of the wall. They charged me $1,500 and they were there for about 2 hours. When I asked them about restoring the bathroom based on their verbalization they said, "Well wait a minute, that's not in the contract. This is what's here and you are paying us $1,500 for 2 hours worth of work and taking care of your mold and your leak." I said to them, "Look this was really nice and it's really swell that you did the work and you certainly did solve the problem of the leak and took the mold out (if it was any mold there), but I don't think that $1,500 is worth it." They got kind of angry with me and I finally said, "Look, I'm not going to argue with you. I'll pay the bill, but I will never ever give you a referral and besides that there's a big deal going around these days about companies like yours, PRC, taking advantage of elderly people and based on my age and my wife's age we're elderly people. And so they gave me a $250 deduction, really swell, so I paid out $1,250 for something that was maybe worth $500. And then lastly they said well now we would love to come in and redo your bathroom and I thought to myself that this was going to be another $5,000, so I just called my brother who is a licensed contractor and he came down and fixed it. I had no way to tell on the pricing whether it was good or bad or indifferent. I've just learned since then that there are a lot of different companies that take advantage of people because of water and mold problems and they really rake you over the coals. It's not something that's targeted at one particular group that does that and it just seems to be this issue with mold and leaking that's become a license to steal. Yeah they did the work, but when my brother finally came in to fix it and put up the new wallboard he just said to me that there was things that this restoration company did that they didn't have to do. All they did was run dryers, evaporators, and took the moisture out. When they were done it left a hole in the floor where the toilet was, and the toilet had to be replaced, and dried out wood and linoleum. All the work to make it a bathroom again my brother did. I was very dissatisfied with what they did and how they did it. They came out right away as a result of the plumber calling them and when I wanted them to come back it took them 5 days to get back.
