Mr. Shephard came to my home to do estimate and was very thorough in his explanation and how the process would go. Gave me an estimate and spent 45 min. explaining different roofing and what his company does. Very satisfied w/ his explanation and wanted to use his company. Had to wait 4 wks as he is so popular and has so many roofing jobs. But the wait was worth while. Mr. Shephard obtained the city permit and had everything in place without delay. The crew was very punctual, courteous and cleaned the yard after the job with out issues. I would use AGL roofing again as was very pleased w/ their service.

Steve (the owner) comes out in person to do the estimate. He has lots of experience in the south bay and knows the roofs around the area. He will give you a realistic quote and warns you that extra charges may be involved as the damaged wood that needs to be replaced under the roof is only revealed in the tear off process. The workers are real professionals and work long and hard to get the job done in under a week. The materials and workmanship together resulted in a job well done. Other items: They use air nailers for their work. Your garage and attic will get dirty from debris so move the cars out and cover up what you want to remain clean. They will clean up the garage if asked. We had some ticky-tack things to take care of and they came out right away to button those things up. They clean up the area really well during and after the job. No worries and no BS with this company. Tell Steve what you want done and let him and his crew take it from there.

On June 18th, owner Steve Shepard gave us an estimate on what it would cost to do a complete tear down and install a new asphalt shingle roof on our home and garage. What impressed us the most was his presentation on what was to be done. He showed us the samples of all the materials to be used and the procedures of the job. He was knowledgeable and able to answer all our questions. He gave us a start date of July 24th but was able to begin a day earlier. Usually contractors ask for 10% down when the work begins, however, Steve let us pay for the entire amount after the work was completed. He also gave us a 'Roofing Preparation List' before starting the job, which was helpful in getting the house and yard ready i.e. notifying neighbors, covering items in garage to protect from falling dust, etc. I would certainly use AGL Roofing again and would recommend them to anyone considering a roofer who is dependable and does quality work.

I got a discount for being on Angie’s List. For one thing, Steve was very informational. He came out and actually gave me a lesson on roofing and what it is involved with and there again, the quality and the efficiency of the people working for him and the cleanliness were just good all around. He is just very low-key but very informative and comes across as a very honest person and what he tells you, he gives you.

We got a new roof from AGL. AGL crew is wonderful. They were punctual, listen to your questions and make adjustments as per your requirements and cleaned up after the job was done. AGL price is a little bit on higher side but i still chose AGL because of a lot of recommendation letters. I am giving a B mainly due the amount of money that company charges for replacement wood. Price of replacement wood is way too high(2-3 times as compared to quote from other companies that i got). I did not realize that at the time of signing the agreement. Even after $325 off coupon, price of replacement wood is very high. Other than this, quality of material used and overall job quality is very good. I would recommend this company but suggest to look carefully at the price of replacement wood.

Response from AGL Roof Co Inc
Thank You for your review and appreciating our hard working crew, quality workmanship, and overall roofing material installed. We are always very clear up front about potential additional costs for wood repair and we cannot predict how much damage each house will have. Our price for wood replacement is competitive with other quality contractors. We choose to use a better quality kiln dried pre-primed wood as opposed to just buying the cheapest poor grade lumber. We will strive to better communicate this issue with all future clients.

Terrific. AGL provided a great consultation and fully met my expectations. I was renovating a home built in 1952 which had 3 layers of existing shingles on it, and AGL tore it down to the sheathing and rebuilt it from there. I monitored the project closely and found AGL to be honest and reliable. Highly recommended!

From the start it was a great experience. Steve, owner, did all the estimating himself and answered all questions. He spent the time to explain everything in great detail which my husband really appreciated. He was very responsive to all calls and requests for more information. He really took the time with us and the experience was great. Crew was great and cleaned up all the mess. The job was so fast, we couldn't believe it. Steve worked great coordinating with our Solar Company (Ameco Solar), and the whole thing went off without a hitch. The roof looks amazing. Price was very competitive, one of the two lowest we got, but really we went with AGL because we had a good feel for the company and Steve. We were not wrong. Would recommend them highly. We got 5 bids for the roof job, and I am sure we picked the best guy. Also AGLs office staff was great and responsive, communicating very fast by email and phone. The business end of the deal was also a very good experience. All jobs should go this easy.

The owner, Steve, was a joy to work with. Willing to explain everything and easy to follow his estimates. He even threw in replacement skylights at his cost (and I checked, he was under what I could purchase them for!). His work crew worked 9 hour plus days, were friendly, careful of the property and pretty clean. Had to look twice to make sure these guys were roofers! We were so happy with this company. I would certainly use them again but, unfortunately, I think the new roof will last so long that that will not be possible. Steve provided a written guarantee and did not want any payments upfront. The company looks like it is doing well and if my work was typical, they should stay pretty busy for a long time to come.

AGL responded promptly to repair a termite-damaged fascia board, and managed to do it without damaging the newly installed drip edge from the August reroofing job. They also reshingled the roof around a new electrical service conduit that was installed because we had the house electrical panel relocated to the side of the house as required by Southern California Edison for a new panel upgrade. The reshingling was done very nice.

The quote for the job was very competitive with other companies and the informational package and presentation on roofing by Steve was very thorough. Steve was also very meticulous about tarping over the bare roof deck after old roof removal (in case of a potential rain system at the time happening during the night), and was quick to respond to questions. The workers were punctual, professional, and worked hard. The roof shingles and underlayment are installed very solidly and the roof looks great. The job was to take 3 days, but a couple workers had to come back on the 4th day to finish up a missed damaged fascia board. What could have been better were: Examination for damaged wood, especially termite damage---I found two fascia boards either during the job or just before scheduled completion that were missed and then weeks later I found one fascia board and one supporting rafter (that I had to repair myself because of location). More than a cursory tap with a hammer is needed, since wood replacement at the time of roofing is the time to replace any suspect wood...and part of the additional cost was for roof deck replaced wood. There weren't any special tools I was using to examine but really just being thorough about any potential suspicious looking surface, paint or sound. Also, they initially wanted to repair a corner rafter with Bondo but I insisted the rafter be replaced. Cleanup - I had to clean up my patio roof of roofing/sawdust debris, plastic bottles and a cardboard tube after the job, and found nails either in the front yard or driveway. The priming of replacement boards was also done on the front lawn, leaving some slight white streaks. Nails through eaves - after job completion, I had to trim off more than 20 nail ends under the eaves (all around the house) that were protruding through the shiplap wood, and patch the areas to be prepared and painted. Despite these things, the quality of the roof itself is first-rate, and the response is puncutal, so I would recommend AGL, you just have to stay on top of things. They also came back later for a couple other small jobs (see other reviews) and did a great job.

AGL was prompt to respond for repair once I had insurance payment for the estimate, and the wood replacement was done very neatly and looks great. They also replaced the underlayment under the new shingles as the vehicle fire had reached up to underneath the eaves. The roof is once again in full warranty and AGL did a great job repairing the damage, over two days.

They did a good job and I made have him do the garage. I need to see it now. An expensive a couple of things come in before I do the garage. They did the work within the last month. They were quick too. You followed them 3 to 4 days and basically got them half. They charge me near $7900, of course I have to pay for the improvement. The price was fair to the others and they were all closer price when got to that kind of quality of a roof. They call thirty nine or some sort of category which means really on better ones but price as well. For quality, things are for good. I will recommend him. I will give them all As all the way for all. Only things I would not do on the garage because it is a little less important in the house. I did get 4- 5 other quotes just to make sure that his price was good and his price still as much as good. So, I probably use them to do that if we choose to the roof on the garage. And soon do another project.

Work started as scheduled at 9:00AM on Monday 9/09/13 and finished at 6:00PM. The contract estimated a job completion date of between 3 to 4 days but work was actually completed in just 2 days. Roof tear-off and installation of the radiant barrier plywood was completed on the first day. Installation of the roof underlayment, leak barrier, 40-year composition shingles and dormer vents were completed on day 2. Clean-up of the job site was adequately completed at the end of each day. Owner Steve Shepard was at the job site each day to inspect the progress and communicate the job status to me and my wife. I was invited to join him on the roof to inspect the progress each day and after the job had been completed. The original contract price was for $10.700.00. As stated in the contract, this estimate did not include costs for damaged wood replacement, application of wood primer to all wood replaced, and the cost of the City Permit obtained by AGL Roof. A Change Order in the amount of $550.00 was submitted on the morning of Day 2. This included $250.00 for 150 feet of damaged wood replacement (after a $350.00 Angies's List coupon was applied), $150.00 for applying wood primer to all replaced wood, $115.00 for the City Permit and $35.00 for purchasing and replacing an old water heater vent in the garage. Replacing a roof is an expensive, noisy and messy job. This was my first time replacing a roof as a homeowner for 28 years. I feel extremely relieved that the job is done without having experienced any of the horror stories that you hear about roofing companies and roof replacement. I highly recommend AGL Roof Company and encourage anyone looking for a roofing company to give Steve Shepard a call.
Description of Work: Remove & dispose of two existing layers of roof (including original wood shake roof). Install new 1/2" radiant barrier plywood. AGL spent time to educated me on the process on getting a new roof. The gave me materials to read, warned me on what to look out for, where to invest my money and where not too. The helped me work with another vendor to replace my gutters and they coordinated their work effort together. Their presentation was very good with minimal pressure to replace the roof. The installers were quick and left the place very clean. On any issues that we identified, AGL took care of it immediately. I would highly recommend them.

I can't say enough good about my experience with AGL Roofing. Everything went according to what was planned. Steve Shepard, the owner of the company was great to deal with. His men were courteous, considerate and showed up on time each day they worked. Steve answered every call from me in person, even on the weekends. I never had to leave a message and wait for a return call. Steve wasn't pushy at all....explained everything in detail and didn't ask for any payment until the job was completed. The quality of the work was excellent.....I was very happy with what they did. I highly recommend Steve's company if one needs a new roof. He was honest and did everything he said he would do. I would gladly hire his company again if I ever need a new roof for my other home. Great company!!

This was an extremely disappointing experience in a lot of ways -- mainly in that I misjudged the owner of the company, Steve Sheppard. I took a lot of care to select what I thought would be the right man for the job -- but I was wrong. I knew this was going to be a huge project with some real potential for problems since we were doing a complete teardown of the roof. It had a lot of obvious wood damage (which would be costly to replace), and as everyone told me, you don't know what you will find until you tear everything off and take a look. (Again, I knew it could be costly.) I had 5 contractors give me bids on the job and I went over it in fine detail with each of them. Finally, I selected Steve for a couple of reasons: 1.) he worked a lot in my area and seemed to have a reputation for doing good work; 2.) I felt comfortable with him, especially when it came to how much I could afford in "add-on cost" -- how much extra I would have to spend on wood replacement. Steve sold me on the fact he knew our area so well that he could make a confident assessment of the project (even the unseen parts); he told me he would be "shocked" if my final project price came in at $10.000. -- the absolute ceiling that I had for the project (The original bid/estimate was $7,400, so we were talking about another $2,600 in potential "add-on costs.") Steve told me he had a great crew, and he would make sure to keep in contact with them and that he would keep me informed throughout the project. Boy, that was not even close to what happened. Steve was on site once a day (usually at the end of the day) during the 3-day project. By the end of Day 1, I got a call from his office saying Steve needed to talk to me about the "add-on cost." We talked that evening about how extensive the wood damage was, and it was worse that expected. But he didn't have a new "add-on cost" to give me -- that would come the next day. But he assured me he was still aware of the budget that I was working with. By the end of the next day, he came to my house and handed me a new bill for the total project -- it was a little short of $15,000 -- nearly double the original estimate (!!!!!). He agreed to give me a $1,500 credit because he knew that he had misjudged the job -- but we were still taking about $13,5000 -- $3,500 above the total he said he never expected to go past. His explanation: These things happen. Sometimes we get a roof like this where the damage is well beyond what we expected. At that point, I wondered how he could have been so wrong given his years of experience of doing this in our community. But I also know that mistakes happen. Estimates are just that -- estimates. If they put a bunch of new wood on your house, you gotta pay for it, right? I still felt confident that I was getting a quality roof. We negotiated some, found ways to come to a reasonable amount, and I paid him $11,500. More than my original budget, but far better than what we could have settled on. I was disappointed that Steve wasn't more involved in the project once it started -- it seemed like he let his crew replace whatever it wanted and he took their word for it. He just went along with whatever they said. (I found this out by counting how many rafter tails that he charged me to fix/replace. I counted the replaced ones, and they overcharged me by 3. Steve came out after I challenged the number; he walked around the house and said they overcharged me by 2. When I asked him why I was overcharged for rafter tails they didn't replace, he said his crew "told me they replaced 31, so I charged you for 31." So I was the first one to check their work? Hmmmmm...) I came away from the experience feeling as if Steve was a "roof broker" -- working as the middle man between me and his crew. That was not what I expected. By the time we finished cleaning up after the crew, disposing of the adult-beverage cans they left behind and some small nails, etc., I was happy to see them gone. A year later, after going through some rain and wind, I can say that the roof held up well -- no leaks, no problems. It looks great and I'm really happy with the materials that we chose with Steve's guidance. The most important part of all of this is that the quality of the work holds up for the next 20-30 years -- and I'm hoping that I'm not wrong about that part of AGL Roofing. Maybe Steve just had a really bad day ... or bad week. But given that his "bad day" came on my project, I can't possibly recommend his work to anyone else -- that is why a year later I finally got around to writing this review. Others should know about what I went through with him and his crew. P.S. Steve checked in a little bit after the project was done to see how things were with the roof. I told him about a few areas that I had concerns about, and he said he'd take a look at them. He sent two guys over a week or so later to take care of those things. It was a nice thing for him to do -- certainly the kind of service that I expected to be getting when I first hired him.

Response from AGL Roof Co Inc
We are very sorry to hear about your disappointment with the final roofing price for your project we completed over a year ago. We are thankful you graded us an "A" in the "Quality" category and recognized the fact we installed great materials for you. After having almost 20 years experience in roofing and roof estimating it is impossible to predict how much damaged wood a house will have after the roof is removed. Some houses have been neglected and not well maintained thereby causing an enormous amount of wood to replace. Your project had approx. 250' ft. of 2 x 6 fascia, 620' ft. of 1 x 6 shiplap, 220' ft. of 1 x 6 regular wood, and 33 rafters that were completely infested with termites and had dry rot damage due to leakage. Your change order was only $4,000.00 for all this work and we walked the job with you and discussed it everyday. You were expecting $2,500.00 in additional costs by simply guessing. We will learn from this experience and make sure to be more clear with our clients that additional costs do add up. We had hoped that the $1,932.00 credit we gave you (as a courtesy) would help out with your limited budget. Thank you again for sharing your opinion and observations regarding your project.

Steve Shephard came out the day after I first called him, surveyed our roof and said, "This is right up my alley". He then launched into his "educational" talk about roofing in general and how to go about the whole process. This was helpful. He left us with a nice portfolio of information and glowing references. The only thing I felt was unnecessary (and this is my only negative comment) was when he slighted another local roofer as an example of the type of roofer we should avoid and why. As a weary consumer, one might appreciate the heads up, but this is just probably not generally the best practice in my opinion. I did, by the way, investigate this individual online and could not come up with any overwhelming evidence to support what was said. I also met with this roofer for an estimate and it was nothing but a positive experience. Anyway, my wife and I otherwise had a good vibe from Steve and were hoping that his estimate would be reasonable. Well, it was - very reasonable. He gave us three different estimates on three different roofing materials (since we hadn't made up our minds on that yet) and they were all very competitive. He made us aware of a limited-time manufacturer's discount on the most expensive material - a clay tile - which we ultimately decided to go with. We looked at other roofs of various materials he had installed in the area, from a list he provided, and they all looked great. When I called him to give him the job, he immediately gave us his first available date three weeks out and that date never changed. Since our old roof had no sheeting - just slats with old wood shake, on top of which was put cheap 3-tab asphalt which all was going to get stripped off, I asked him he could leave the roof "open" for a day or two because we also wanted to have some electrical and insulation work done while the roof was off and there was sunlight. He said "no problem" and scheduled that into the job. He gave me referrals to an electrician and insulation company he'd worked with before - both of which ended up working out nicely. Before and all during the process, Steve (and his assistant in the office) was responsive and helpful in answering all our questions. Once his guys got started, things happened like clockwork. You won't find a harder-working group of guys than this crew of Steve's. Nice too. They did a good job of cleaning up every day and when they couldn't immediately haul all of the old material to the dump the first day because the truck needed repairs, Steve was sure to explain this ahead of time - not a problem for us. With the old roof off, we walked the roof and he inspected his guys' work, went over the inevitable dry-rotted wood replacement with me, and answered any questions I had. After the sheeting was put on but before the waterproof underlayment, we had a rare summer rain forecast. Steve made sure to have his guys cover the roof with plastic to keep it dry and good thing he did because the rain came through pretty good. Steve took care of the permit process. Didn't need to worry about that at all. Even included cost of the permit in his bid. At the end of it all, we couldn't have been happier with the results. The whole job was done in 5 days (including the "open" day). They did an excellent job and the roof looks fantastic. I consider myself pretty picky and was looking for holes to poke in the job - there's always little details that get missed or forgotten. But I couldn't find any. We were done! No follow up issues. I noticed they even came by and replaced a bulb that was accidentally broken by his crew in one of our security lights. A nice surprise. Everything was left cleaned up to our satisfaction. No surprises on the final invoice. I would happily recommend Steve and AGL Roofing for a GREAT LOOKING ROOF.
Description of Work: Full roof replacement, including sheeting, on 1635 sq ft single-story home, from wood shake / asphalt to lightweight clay tile.

If Steve Shepard, the owner of AGL Roof Co., comes to your house to give you a quote on a new roof, sit down in some comfortable chairs and let the education begin. He is a very likable guy. Not pushy at all. If you don?t choose AGL Roof Company, that?s okay with him. He wants to make sure you know enough about roofs, roofing contractors, and estimate bids to make the best decision. He will give you a packet of information containing tips on hiring a contractor; samples and pamphlets of the roofing material he uses; a huge list of houses in the South Bay with roofs installed by AGL; lots of letters from happy customers; a letter from GAF confirming that Steve is a GAF Master Elite Contractor; and a list of things the homeowner needs to do in preparation for the installation of a new roof. Steve?s employees are really nice and have worked for him for years. They are incredibly hard-working. They are very unobtrusive and polite. Steve stops by the work site often to make sure everyone is happy. He keeps the homeowner informed during the entire process. He let me know of the wood that needed to be replaced, what he was doing to keep the rain off of the un-shingled house, and the city inspector?s agenda. There were no surprises. I highly recommend AGL Roof Co., Inc. You will get a top notch team of workers using the best materials for a decent price.
Description of Work: The first day of construction, the crew removed old layers of wood and composite shingles from the house, detached garage, and enclosed patio. They hauled away the debris in their big truck. The second day the crew replaced all the wood damaged by termites and dry rot. I opted to have the AGL Roof crew primer all the new fascia and rafter wood that would later require painting. Sheathing wasn’t used when building the 1947 garage, so a complete new layer of new ½” osb plywood was required. That night, the weather forecast called for scattered showers, so the crew covered the house and garage roof with tar paper that was thrown away the next morning. This was done at AGL’s expense. On the third day, after a light overnight shower, the crew tore off the temporary tar paper. The city inspector signed off the inspection sheet and the AGL crew began to install the drip edge metal flashing and the RoofPro modified 35 lb. underlay. They installed six new dormer vents, GAF Stormguard leak barrier, new chimney and wall flashing metal, new vent pipe flashings and vent pipe caps. They started to install the GAF Lifetime High Definition composite shingles and Ridglass hip and ridge shingles. They also started to put on the Torch Down membrane on the flat roof over the enclosed patio. On the fourth day, the crew finished installing all the new roofing material and did a good job of cleaning up the yard. The city inspector gave his approval on the final inspection. Our new roof looks great. I’m sure we won’t have any problems with the new roof, but just in case we want to install something that requires cutting a hole in the roof, Steve Shepard asked me to call him to make sure the job is done right. And I will.

He was very accomadating, and easy to work with. He passed the gaurantee with GAf manufacture. they have a very particular process for getting a guarantee. He also said he would come out and fix anything free of charge. I am very satisfied with his work. very proffessional and followed through. came in theo ther companies by a couple thousand dollars.

The job went beautifully from start to finish. When Steve arrived to meet with us for the first time, he came well prepared with samples of materials and information about what the job would entail. He also had a folder full of reference letters from happy clients and a long list of references we could call, or even drive by to take a look at the work he had done. Steve was extremely confident and struck as very competent, while also being very polite and professional. He inspired confidence in us. The work was completed in 3 days, as promised, and the clean-up was very thorough. We are extremely happy with AGL's work, and we would hire them again and again.

Steve Shepard and his crew did a great job from start to finish. Steve communicated clearly and professionally throughout. The crew was hard working and courteous. I didn't find any debris after they cleaned up the job site. Steve coordinated some electrical work I needed and that also turned out very well. I've seen several roofing jobs up close, and the AGL job is one of the best. The new roof looks great. No complaints.

Steve Shepard promptly provided a detailed scope of work that included recommendations for achieving the objectives we established for the project. The division of responsibilities between the homeowner and contractor were made explicitly clear. Work started a week after the initial contact and was completed in approximately 2-days. Steve demonstrated flexibility and a willingness to work with the property owner on items that might normally fall outside of a typical roofing project. For example, they installed insulation over one room of the house that did not have it. They adapted their schedule to accommodate having an electrician do some wiring for a ceiling fan while the attic could be exposed from above. All of this added complexities that might have frustrated another contractor. The AGL crew is very hard working, friendly and courteous. The foreman was good about communicating with the property owner as the project progressed. The overall result is a new roof that exceeded our expectations in terms of appearance and quality. I have worked with many contractors of different sorts and have never worked with anyone more committed to quality and customer satisfaction than Steve Shepard. I could not recommend Steve and AGL Roof Co. more highly.

The good: AGL installed a very good looking roof, and was very responsive. We've had several other home improvement specialists out doing other work since our roof, and all are impressed with the roofing and ask who did the work (including our gutter guy who does roofs himself!). More importantly, we've had a few storms since install and all is good with no leaks! :) For the roofing above our beam ceiling (room addition) we had insulation added under the roof, per Steve's recommendation, which has made a SIGNIFICANT difference in our energy bills. I highly highly recommend this if you have a room addition or wood beam ceilings. We never used to utilize the room in the winter because it was too freezing, but now we have normal temps year round. We have single paned windows and considered buying dual paned just to save the energy costs, but it turns out the roof improvements saved us a bundle as we no longer need to replace the windows. A few points to note: I highly recommend not using your credit card with AGL. It appears our credit card was billed by a third party and not AGL themselves. Shortly after the charge, I had fraud and had to close the account. Yes, that can be totally coincidential but I wouldn't take any chances. I completely trust AGL but I know nothing about this company that my card was actually charged to. Secondly we had an issue with permits. Steve at AGL pulled the permit for our roof and that was fantastic as I never want to step foot in the permit office again. We had added a solartube to our roof as AGL was installing the roof and little did we know the city required a second permit for that. When the roofing permit inspector came, they called me and said they couldn't sign off until we resolved the solatube permit issue. I spent a total of THREE LONG hours and two seperate visits in the permit office and had to dispute with them. We purchased the top brand, solatube, and yet they said it wasn't approved. Finally I got it all resolved, however I was fined double the cost of the permit because I didn't get the permit prior to the install. This was the City of Torrance. This wasn't AGL's fault, but I was a little disappointed that they recommended the solatube installer and permits were never mentioned (they said they never had this happen). I only state this for your knowledge - I don't hold it against AGL. And one minor issue is a few days after AGL was complete, we noticed the nails came straight through the beams inside our house in one area. Not a big deal as we can just apply a little putty and paint and we are good. You may want to check the inside if you have wood beams prior to them leaving. Lastly, have them check your property again with their metal detectors for nails. We found tons the following weeks. Not good if you have pets or kids. Back to the good. I would definitely recommend AGL to others, and we have. Their crew was fast and professional. The price was right and the work exceeded our expectations by far. I truely believe their work has more than paid for itself by preventing more water damage and improving our energy efficiency.

My neighbor's house is essentially identical to mine so when it was time to replace my ancient tar and gravel roof I naturally asked who did theirs. They highly recommended Steve Shepard with AGL and after completing my re-roof I can see why. Steve and his crew were great to work with and managed to tear off my old roof and complete the new comp shingle roof in two days (with a solar installation by another vendor thrown in to complicate things). They worked very well with my solar installer even though it was in the way of what they were trying to do and coordinating timing set the roofing project back several months. I received estimates from 3 different roofers and AGL was very close to lowest and provided and outstanding level of service and professionalism.
