They did a fairly good job and they were fairly quick. Their customer service was not that great though. They obviously have a lot of clients and the representative actually forgot who I was.

Pamela came promptly for our appointment to give an estimate to insulate our 50 year old home. She was courteous and personable and worked with my elderly mother to understand where it was drafty and what comfort level she wanted. She walked through the whole house, took measurements everywhere, including the garage and a difficult area under the main floor of our house (rough concrete poured over a steep slope under the house). She poked some holes in the ceilings (in the closets so it wouldn't show) to verify what kind of insulation was already there. Based on the build date of the house, she had her suspicions but wanted to be sure. The other insulator did NOT do that, and we hired them. Then it turned out to be a problem. Pamela returned again when my mom changed her mind about the scope of the job. The bid was $2,000 lower compared to the other one. We ended up going with the other company because my mother really did NOT want fiberglass which SDI uses -- Mom was insistent that she get blue jean material -- and the sales rep from the other company was very persistent and called every 2-3 weeks to see how things were progressing. In the end, I really believe it was the blue jeans material that was the deciding factor.

Was very professional in the estimate as well as in the installation. Two different people so I'm not sure whether the details of what I wanted were well communicated. I should probably have called them in for a touchup job but never got around to it. Otherwise it would have been an A rating all around.

The supervisor came with the estimator a week or so before they did the job to explain how they would do the job to protect my husband from fiberglass in the air. On the day of work he were a little late but that didn't matter. Lots of guys showed up to put up the plastic and then they went to another job. We wanted to make sure the job was finished in one day to minimize the stress on my husband's lungs.

All went according to plan except the use of the hepa vacuum. We spent the night away to minimize problems for my husband and he has HAD NO BREATHING DIFFICULTIES!!!

I can't say yet if the insulation made a difference as this has been an exceptionally cool summer for us. If I can post something when it gets cold, I will add to this post.

Been 5 years since I had SDI spray my underfloors with Icynene foam. Of all the major changes during remodeling - walls, windows, doors, furnace, fireplace insert and attic floors - the foam was the best investment. It makes the whole house feel and sound better and the new bamboo floors are warm to the feet. Heating is rarely needed now and as a bonus - ants are hard pressed to find a way in now as the subfloor is sealed air tight.

Had to call them back months later when I found an area they missed. Out they came and quickly corrected the error (which was in a hard to get to spot in the crawl space. They even foamed the pipes to/from the hot tub as they went - showing thoughtful desire to a goal of insulation not just a work order.

Unfortunately, I can't comment on the performance or price of this company because the never returned my email request for an in-home estimate. How can you do business with a company that won't respond to its potential customers?
Response from SDI INSULATION
"We have researched our phone and email records extensively and do not have a record of Mr. Lieberman's request. If he is still interested in a quote please have him call (650) 685-5500 or email or Steve Delorenzi, President of SDI at [email protected] Thank you"

I called SDI and was connected with Andrew Schwartz who set up an appointment for the estimate. Andrew showed up on time and was very helpful. He emailed me their estimate the next day. I mailed the contract with my deposit check and got another email with the date and time they wanted to do the work. I picked another day and SDI agreed. At the scheduled date and time, the crew showed up and did the work. They took precautions to avoid any dripping or other damage and it took about 2 hours in total. It has been cold since the insulation was installed and it is remarkably warmer in the front bedroom. All in all it was a good experience and at a good price too.

He did a good job and was pretty inexpensive. He did all the insulation that he said he would and was very easy to deal with. All our initial communication was through e-mail. He sent me the initial estimate in a PDF format, which I liked. He responded to everything easily and quickly through e-mail and did the work at very short notice. I was really pleased with the price and the work. The crew finished the job in several hours, and also cleaned up after themselves. I would use SDI Insulation again if I need anything done.

We were looking to insulate an old cottage (not currently living there) with blown in insulation and called to have someone come out to give an estimate. Our appointment was for Thursday at 3:30. At 2:30, I received a call from the estimator saying that he was at the house and that he had an appointment at 3:30 in another city, so he wouldn't be able to to wait for me to come to the house to do the estimate. He ignored me when I told him our appointment was at 3:30, and when I told him I could be at the house in 5 minutes he said he would start to measure the house from the outside. I then told him that would be an inaccurate measurement since we planned to do later additions, and would only need quotes for certain portions of the house. He ignored my request, and when I arrived to let him in the house, didn't want to measure the rooms we wanted an estimate for - stating that he had already measured them from the outside. Throughout our interaction that day, I had difficulty getting the estimator to listen to what I was asking or saying. Two times during our conversation, I literally had to ask him to stop speaking to let me talk. He didn't seemed phased by my abruptness, but it didn't seem to make the interactions any smoother. Several days later, I received a voice mail message stating that I had given him an incorrect email address and I should call him back to give him a new one. In his message he called me by three different first names -??? I have a very common first name - in fact he told me his daughter also has the same name. I called him back and reminded him of my first name and gave him my email address again. He send the quote: "Here is the quote. Your PGE for the walls is around $500.00 Regards," Around $500? We bid the project out to two other companies, and each of them gave us an exact, detailed quote that was a lot more expensive, but a lot more accurate. Subsequently, we decided NOT to go with SDI.
Response from SDI INSULATION
"The comments contained in this rating are very uncharacteristic of the SDI Estimator for this project. We apologize for any inconvenience that our estimator may have caused. We take pride in our customer service and have addressed the problems noted in this rating. After reading this rating we initiated training sessions with our estimators to improve their communication and listening skills."

SDI Insulation is one of the best companies I’ve worked with. Everyone there (i.e. Kris Khoury, Steve Pearce) are professionals, punctual and responsive (to email and phone). However, I think the true test for customer service is when something actually goes wrong. During the wall insulation, one of the interior walls cracked from the blower pressure. Unfortunately, we didn’t notice this until after SDI left our house. When we called to tell them, they promptly sent Steve out to take pictures and schedule the dry wall contractor and painting contractor to come out to fix it. Finally, they were also very helpful about sending us all the necessary documentation to claim the PGand E rebate and the federal tax credits.

Funds were set aside by Rising Sun Energy Co. to add insulation to existing homes that met certain requirements in Alameda County. I wasn't even aware of the program but when I met the requirements they submitted a request and called me back the next day and set up the appointment for the following week. Everyone I dealt with was knowledgeable, answering all questions I had. The installers arrived on time, finished early and made a concerted effort to keep my home free from cellulose material. And they were even patient and friendly with my dog. I would indeed use them again and not just because I got a $1000.00 job done for free.

Initially, had a hard time getting a call back - emailed on a Sunday, and called to follow-up on Monday afternoon. Was told someone would get back to me by Tuesday morning at the latest. On Wednesday, I called again, and spoke to the estimator, who had apparently never gotten the message. He was able to come out that afternoon, and emailed me what seemed to me a very reasonable quote the next day. They were able to schedule the service in one week - my only beef is that they don't confirm the actual appointment time until the afternoon before. We were expecting the truck at 8:00am, and heard it pull up at 7:15am. However the workmen patiently waited until 8 before knocking. They were courteous and clean, bringing in drop cloths so that they did not walk on the white carpet. While they were working, the estimator stopped by to check on the job to ensure everything was OK. The job took nearly 3 hours, including patching holes in the wall and clean-up. There was 0 mess when the men were gone, they even vacuumed the rug.

When the person we had an appointment to get a quote with got stuck on another job he sent someone else who was here at the time we had set. This was a good sign. The estimator (Andrew) was very thorough, took the time to explain the different types of insulation materials, and gave us a very good quote. They had to reschedule the work once, but we were flexible with that. The work was completed in one day and we're happy with the overall experience. We had the house painted afterwards the 'polka dots' were soon gone too.
