Absolute perfectionists moving my treasured piano! Would definitely use them again!
Response from Sterling Van Lines

"Thank you so much for using our piano moving service and taking the time to review us. Sterling hopes to continue that kind of service. If you plan to move anything in the future, we hope you keep us in mind."

Everyone there was very kind and helpful.  It had been a rough day for me, and although only one person in the office drank coffee, he made an entire pot just for me! That really cheered me up :)  The two men who who inventoried and moved my things were very kind and professional; and they were very careful in wrapping and storing my precious items.  Great experience ~ I highly recommend them!

Fine.  So far, so good.  They told me it would be about three or four weeks total.  They will call my son when they get close to set up final delivery.

They told my daughter-in-law they would arrive at their home on a specific day and time frame, and they were a no-call, no-show. I called to let them know this was unacceptable, and the management provided me the driver’s phone number. We called the driver and he said he would be there on a specific day (it was 3-4 days later) within a specific time frame, and again, he did not show up or call to say he was not going to arrive. When I called the company for the 2nd time, the manager offered to reimburse me $100 for the inconvenience – which does not make up for days of lost time. They are terrible at scheduling and communicating when they will pick up and/or deliver their loads.  If you want to spend your life waiting on someone to show up that never does, this is the company you want to use.
Response from Sterling Van Lines

"This customer is totally correct. The actions of the driver of not calling and not showing up when he promised is absolutely unacceptable. The customer was compensated $233.00. We sincerely apologize and we know that this compensation does not remedy the situation. While we have many more success stories than complaints, there is no excuse for this and we have taken measures to prevent it in the future. We want to thank the customer for calling it to our attention."

The driver, Mark, was very nice and easy to work with. I had that feeling every step of the way with everyone I spoke with from the company. I researched and spoke with several other companies prior to choosing Sterling. The driver was in regular communication with me, and gave me two day’s notice prior to both picking up and delivering the items. He showed up exactly when he said he was going to. I was very surprised at how carefully and thoroughly everything was wrapped. The items where all in their own boxes and completely taped up. Although the driver was working alone, he wrapped everything up, and when he delivered it, he unwrapped and carried everything up to her bedroom. The move couldn't have been any easier.  I would highly recommend them.

They had to take the glass and mirrors off the inside of the Curio cabinet and wrap that separately, which they were very careful about. When they delivered the furniture about a week later (ahead of schedule), they reassembled the curio cabinet and moved the items where I wanted them. There was no damage to any of my pieces. The driver was wonderful. It was nice that they were able to just move a few things versus having to have a full truck.

Everything went very smoothly. They were very careful with the bedroom set, and nothing was scratched or damaged.  I appreciated the fact I didn't have to hound them or babysit them. They were very professional. They do have a minimum price, which I felt was reasonable. Every time I called someone answered the phone right away. Everything went perfectly, and I would highly recommend them.

The price was incredible. It was going to be a long distance move (500-600 miles), and all of the other companies kept adding in extra charges, but Sterling Van Lines did not. I did a lot of research on moving companies prior to my move, and Sterling Van Lines knocked everyone out of the park. They were very friendly.

Sterling is fantastic. This last move, from NYC to LA, took place right after Hurricane Sandy. They managed to get a truck there so I could vacate close to the planned time. They took a lot of care with packing up my stuff and the delivery went without a hitch. All employees are courteous and efficient, in my experience.

Sterling Van Lines used three men on a tough move out from a third floor two bedroom with no elevator in San Francisco and then in L.A. two of those men moved me into an apartment. The men worked really hard especially on the move out which was physically very demanding.

This was a very negative experience.  They moved me less than one mile and charged me over a thousand dollars to do it.  There was packing involved, but they weren’t really packing.  They were standing around instead.  The manager was supposed to be there to tell them what to do, but he wasn’t there.  I was at my wit’s end with the service.  I used my home phone and called Angie’s List.  When I got my furniture, there were many broken items.  They broke an antique teapot.  Antiques have to be in good condition to be valuable.  I was very upset and angry.  There were broken shelves.  The person tried to fix the shelf by using a bolt.  Now it hangs at an angle.  They dropped a light and broke it.  None of my items were handled with care.  There is a large gouge on the mantle of my fireplace.  They also charged me for the packing supplies.  I had plastic boxes and my things were already packed.  They put my boxes inside their boxes.  They were overpacking my items and using way more than what was necessary.  My garbage can was filled to the brim three weeks in a row with the packing paper that they used.  They said they would send me a claim form back in early December, and I have yet to receive anything.
Response from Sterling Van Lines

"Well, this is a very upsetting report. This job completed over 9 months ago in early March of 2012. It should be known that at the time of this delivery we had no complaints whatsoever. There was no call or complaint that anyone in our office heard about. Had there been any evidence of damage this customer would have received a claim form rapidly and there would have been all possible effort to help her. Instead we are only now just discovering that this customer had a bad experience almost a year earlier? It is upsetting to be in a situation on Angie’s List where there are no safeguards against people embellishing and inventing things that are not true. We are very proud of our service record. Fact: The customer’s charges were $500.00 less than the actual estimate that she had to move. It took 4 men 2 days to pack and mover her household goods. She had a small home that was so full of boxes and clothes and furniture that no one could move around easily in the space. There was a lot of items to move. Fact: We did very little packing for this job. Most of the packing was for wardrobe boxes for clothes. Most of her items were packed by someone other than the moving company. She was definitely charged for the packing that we did do. In fact the packing charges were over $200.00 less than the estimated charges. Fact: At no time were our men standing around without something to do except for the time that the customer brought the men soda and water. So they get some drinks for a few minutes given them by the customer and then we get a complaint that they were standing around – almost a year later. Fact: The manager of the job is the lead driver who was present during the whole move. It is true that her boyfriend who was supposed to be there giving direction was not there until later during the move. Fact: She was not charged for any of her boxes that were put in our boxes to help speed up the move. Fact: She had a lot of packing to throw away. True – in any move where you have boxes and packing material, you will always have trash to throw away. Fact: Customer claims “many broken items” yet we have no (zero) evidence of anything broken at all and all of a sudden almost a year later we get a bad report on Angie’s List! Fact: The customer’s boyfriend who actually paid for the move had no complaints whatsoever. We called and talked with him to find out if he observed the same things as the customer and he did not and had nothing bad to say."

Dave and his partner w/ Sterling Van Lines arrived on time. They took the best care wrapping and doing inventory on all the furniture pieces. They treated my furniture like it was their own. They were the most professional movers that I have ever seen or known. They were very polite and courteous. Best experience I've had w/ a company in a very long time. Thoroughly impressed.

We were nervous because these things had belonged to my grandparents and they were irreplaceable.  The representative Marc got in touch with us once he had left Vermont and assured us our things were being taken care of and that they would arrive intact and on time.  Marc was easily reached and very responsive. Our things were well packed and did arrive intact. In fact even little things like pegs for a bookcase made it.

The move started off ok until I noticed that some of our items were damaged upon delivery. Our white leather sofa and coffee table were delivered with scratches (it goes without saying that the scratch on the leather sofa is irreparable), the digital screen on our wine cooler no longer functions, and our tv was dented up. If we didn't have insurance on these items, I would be even more upset than I already am. Having to go through the claims process is annoying enough.

The cherry on top of all of this is that one of our items has not be delivered yet. It's been nearly 3 weeks. The first time I called they were very apologetic and they said they would give me a call back with an estimated delivery time. I waited 2 days- no call. I called them back and they said Tony would give me a call back with the estimated date. No call back. This happens at least 2-3 times more. I'm still waiting for a call back. Suffice to say, I don't think I'm ever going to see my desk again. And yes, I was charged for the delivery.

I can't be sure whether they have any intention of delivering it. My guess is they're just waiting for a delivery in my city so that they don't have to make the drive out there just for my desk. But they forget I've already paid for the services and it was THEIR mistake. If they're so opposed to making the drive, they should just ship it to me (which I've already suggested to them). And yes, I'm still waiting for their call back...

I should also note that I didn't have an Angie's List account prior to this. I signed up and paid money purely for the purposes of writing this review and getting this information out there to all you consumers looking for movers.

Everything went very well.  My husband and I were again impressed by the team that drove down to San Diego for the two loads. Because there were two separate destinations for items in both the storage unit and in our home (plus items ranging from fine artwork, mid-century furniture and delicate china to 8 large tubs of Lego bricks and a handmade grandfather clock), the packing and load required extra diligence and organization.  Joe, Sergio Jr and Luis immediately understood the scope of the project and were organized, efficient and careful in labeling, packing and loading.  They were always respectful of our home, careful in protecting floors and walls from damage as they worked.  They worked nonstop.
Our load was then taken to LA, where it was stored until it could be combined with other eastbound loads.  Tony, the LA scheduler, and Dave, the transcontinental driver, kept us updated with the schedule. This was a complicated move and everything went well.  There was only one damaged item: scratches and gouges on a large table which I believe was due to the complications of transferring part of the load to the Chicago area moving & storage company. (Ray sent me information on making a claim for repair which I know will be handled fairly and efficiently.)   Moving can be a hassle; however, everyone at Sterling knows how difficult this can be and they made this project much easier for us. They are all professional, responsive and attentive.  Their customer service is superb.  Thank you Doug, Billy, Tony and Ray in the LA office; Joe, Sergio Jr and Luis for the San Diego packing and pickup; and to Dave, who delivered the shipments to Chicago.  They may call themselves Sterling, but they are the gold standard for moving.

They were referred by another Angie's List company.  Although, I didn't use them due to short time frame.  They were courteous and very helpful.  I would definitely call them next time as they seemed more professional than the movers I am using.

I contacted Sterling Van Lines (Doug), they rushed to retrieve this piano (it would have been ruin by rain), got it on the first truck coming 1,500 miles this way. Called along the way and delivered it to my home in perfect shape. Service was excellent!

So far, great -- I'll update the review when my belongings arrive at the other end! Our situation is that we haven't sold our house in LA yet, but most of our belongings were packed up and put in storage so the house would show well. In the meantime, we rented an unfurnished house in the Boston area, so we suddenly had to ship out enough of our belongings to furnish it. We had stuff at two locations, our house and the storage unit, and both were inaccessible to a full-sized truck or container. We weren't moving everything, so I had to pick and choose as my belongings were being loaded, requiring patience on the part of the movers. I also hoped to accomplish the move the same week I was calling!
I interviewed three movers over the phone. Since my boxes were already packed, I assumed that a container mover would be cheapest. I found a good one, but they couldn't accommodate my  access problems without incurring a large additional expense and a lot of trouble on my part. Sterling, a full service mover, was willing to accommodate everything at essentially the same cost as the container company. Sandy was great to deal with on the phone, very patient at explaining the pricing rules. (I think these are fairly standard in the industry, but they are confusing because they quote by the pound but they actually measure cubic feet and multiply by a standard factor. Since I was splitting my move, it turned out to be more economical to ship my heavy things and leave the light-weight furniture behind.)
The movers arrived that Friday, as promised, with a large pick-up truck to shuttle my belongings to the van, and three helpful, friendly, and patient movers. Furniture was carefully wrapped, each box was tagged before it was loaded, and care was taken with boxes marked as fragile. The movers helped me move everything out of the storage room, then put the things back that I was leaving behind.
As we loaded, I of course discovered many items that I hadn't thought of when we made the initial estimate. I expected a "gotcha" on the final bill, but it was finalized before the movers drove away at a price very close to what we originally agreed to.
If everything goes as smoothly at the other end, I'll be a very happy customer.
