Just my small experience. All the other reviews were great! So I hoped to work with him. But I can't move forward on a job with that sort of start. I hope this can be feedback for him to improve in a few areas.
"I did not put appointment in my phone, so that was my fault. I sent a couple text messages as I was headed over and no response. I called and no answer. So how can I explain what went wrong if no answer. I have never missed an appt. until this day and felt terrible as it was a missed opoortunity. So for this to be written is unfair because there was no response from her."
"Thank you very much. It was a pleasure working for you."

As for the actual work, we had Seacliff (or his subs) do the demo, foundation, framing, electrical, plumbing, roof, plaster, painting, and tile. I hired and supervised subs to do the wood floor install, cabinet install, closet door install, and shower door install. His subs, for the most part, arrived on time and did their work without problem. We worked particularly close with the electrician (Greg), plumber (Ulysis) and tile installer (Alfredo). Greg and Ulysis were very easy to work with and I found their work good. Alfredo was a bit more difficult to work with due to language issues, but the quality of his work was superb. Darren's right hand man, Charlie, was pleasant to work with and onsite for much of the job.
The job itself took about 5 months. The major issue that occurred and lengthened the timeframe related to failure to install the weep screed several inches above grade, as the code requires, for the new master bathroom. As a result, I was forced to regrade the backyard and remove alot of dirt to lower the grade near the new construction. I was a bit disappointed in that someone, IMO, should have caught this issue during install of the foundation and/or weep screed and remedied at that time. However, in the grand scheme of things, this was just a blip in the construction. The remainder of the project went without a hitch and my wife and I are very pleased with how things turned out, especially the new master bathroom.
Things that we liked about Seacliff and Darren during the construction:
1) His final price was close to his initial bid, other than change orders that we requested. With the exception of one minor cost addition for the bathroom tile install, his original bid was the same price as the final cost.
2) He is easy to work with. He communicates by text, email and/or phone. He provides quick responses. I found some GCs to be dinosaurs with respect to technology.
3) He and his subs do quality work. Based upon the discrepancy between Seacliff's bid and the much more expensive bids of some other GCs, I was a bit worried going into the process. However, the quality of the work by Seacliff and the subs was good. I presume some of the "discount" is related to the fact that Seacliff, unlike many GCs, asks that you supply many items for the project. I had no problems doing so if this got me a cheaper price.
4) His construction timeline was actually close. He finished a little behind schedule, primarily related to the fact that we had to stop construction for several weeks to regrade the backyard in order to get city approval.
5) He was patient. I had many GCs express isses with having an attorney or an engineer as a client, due to the difficulty in "having a working relationship as opposed to an adversarial relationship". Darren expressed no reservations and handled my many questions and issues professionally.
6) He was willing to allow me to hire some of my own subs. Darren was willing to communicate and coordinate with those subs, as necessary.
Things that can be improved with Seacliff and Darren:
1) Some things were last minute. We knew that we had to provide certain things, such as paint. That was not a problem. The problem occurred when we were told last minute that Seacliff needed something the next day or two. Perhaps develop a weekly timeline so the homeowners know a week or two in advance when certain items need to be supplied? Or sending an email each Friday about the items that needed to be supplied the next week? The last minute notice was not a daily problem, but it did prove a source of frustration on occasion.
2) Removal of constructiontrash/debris. This was our biggest complaint. We had a pile of construction debris on the back patio that grew larger and larger by day. The contract called for a clean jobsite with removal of all trash and debris. Greater effort needs to be made in this regard for safety and cleanliness.

We hired Darren to do some electrical and tile work, and to do some other miscellaneous things around the house, at a cost of $6500. With the exception of some of the electrical work and the tile work, all of the work (plumbing, drywall repair, some electrical, painting, etc.) was performed by Charlie, Darren's employee, under the loose supervision of Darren. I don't believe that Charlie is a licensed contractor, so we walked away with the feeling of having paid contractor prices for handyman-quality work.
As for Charlie's work, the baseboards he put on are not entirely straight (there are noticeable gaps between the baseboards and the floor). He also did a poor job painting a very tall ceiling. He used a roller instead of spraying the paint, and there was 1 coat of paint in some places and 2 coats in others - it was so bad that even though it was a 20 foot ceiling, you could clearly see the unevenness from the ground. Plus, Charlie got white ceiling paint drips on the living walls in the process of painting the ceiling. The end result was that we had to have the entire room (both the walls and the ceiling) repainted by a professional painter, at a cost of several hundred dollars. Other than these problems, I was happy with Charlie's work and liked him on a personal level - he was pleasant and helpful.
As for the tile work, Seacliff's tile guys were average - I would give them a C. Some of tile cuts weren't very good, and the tile wasn't laid evenly (you can feel a noticeable rise when you walk across the room).
My main problem with Seacliff was with the electrical subcontractor, Greg. I would give him a D. Since a large portion of our project was electrical, this is why I feel compelled to give them a C grade overall. Greg was really flaky and didn't do high-quality work. He was constantly running off, leaving unfinished work behind, for personal reasons. He didn't always show up when he said he would. On the day that I really needed him to show up to fix some work he didn't do properly the first time, he was a no-call, no-show.
Long story short, Greg installed more-complicated-than-necessary remote-controlled light switches to operate ceiling fans in 3 bedrooms, even though 2 of the bedrooms had all of the wiring pre-existing for a simple (and cheaper) dual slide dimmer switch. In retrospect, I think he did this so he could upcharge us with a "change order" for work that really didn't need to be done.
Less than a month after the project was finished, 2 of the 3 switches stopped working reliably. Long story short, Seacliff refused to replace them with hard-wired switches (which is what we had originally wanted), but said that we would have to pay Greg extra to put in hard-wired switches. We ended up having to pay another electrician $125 to hard-wire switches for us - it took a total of 45 minutes for both rooms, and the electrician was shocked that Greg hadn't used the existing wiring and simple switches in the first place.
Less than 2 months after the project was finished, the last remaining switch failed, too. Darren was equally unsympathetic this time around. The only solution he offered was to replace the remote switch with another, identical remote switch - not a satisfactory solution, since all 3 of the remote switches had now failed, and we had no reason to believe this would be an effective long-term solution. So again, we had to pay a different electrician $225 to fix the problem and to install a reliable switch.
All told, we had to pay $350 for an electrician to fix Greg's shoddy work, and $500 to have the living room professionally repainted. For the price we paid Seacliff (well over $6000 for a week-and-a-half of work), I feel that Darren should have bitten the bullet and had Greg take care of our electrical issues at no cost to us.
In summary, here are the pros and cons of Seacliff:
PROS:
I think Darren is a decent, honest person
He threw in some extra work for us for free
CONS:
The work was adequate, but not great
Seacliff's electrical sub was not good
I feel like Seacliff didn't fully stand behind its work
We had to pay $850 to other contractors (painters and electricians) to fix Seacliff's work after the project was finished
When it came time to settle the bill, there were more upcharge change orders than I expected, with only minimal credits
"Very sorry she feels this way. First thing i would like to say is that all our work has a warranty. If there is a problem you must call us, the contractor, to repair. This customer chose not to. At the end of the job this customer was un happy with cost of contract she signed. I gave her back $300.00 cash to ease the situation. She also mentioned Charlie, my main employee who does not require license as he works under mine. No contractor employs licensed contractors or they would work on their own. All our subs are licensed. As you can see in previous reviews we have no problem with Charlie and i don't think we do in this case. Her dissatisfaction with the ceiling he painted was never brought to my attention until after she hired someone to paint entire room which she had talked to me about having done early in job. The baseboards had no more than 1/8" gap between floor and this is within tolerance and this was brought up to me a week or two after completion. We were very fair on changes from electrician, most at cost. My electrician has been doing work for us for 8 yrs. He's had some personal issues which forced me to hire another electrician for my future projects. The switch she recently called me back on was replaced by someone else before she called me therefore i can not warranty but i offered to pay $75 of $150 to have switch she wanted installed or i would replace switch with exact switch as warranties call for. She refused and chose to post this review. I worked with this customer by doing numerous proposal changes, phone calls, giving her back $300.00 plus another $50 for a total of $350.00 which we were not obligated to do. We are very easy to work for as you can read in our previous reviews and strive to make our customer service the best."
Accordingly, I drew up plans and had them approved, and work began. Darren's team, including all sub-contractors were outstanding. The plumber spent a lot of time cutting the concrete slab to find the best way to lay the drain lines. All the work was high quality - no corners were cut. Then came the hot mop, paper and wire, and tile. The advantage with going with sub-contractors is that they are all pros at what they do. Darren and his employees do the rest including drywall, paint, setting vanity and toilets, light electrical and fixtures.
Seacliff's bid includes all labor and working materials like drywall, cement, copper pipe, grout. The customer supplies the rest (tile, vanity, paint, fixtures). This was perfect for us because we knew exactly what we were paying for the materials, without having to worry whether the contractor was including a markup, had the materials come from him.
The permitting process as well as the holiday season caused a few delays, which was expected. But Darren made sure all the city's concerns were handled promptly and in a professional manner, with no complaints whatsoever. Changes to the original scope of work (some due to additions we requested) were also accommodated at a fair price.
Overall we were very happy with the result, and will have no hesitation in using Seacliff Builders for future remodeling work.
"Thank you. Very much appreciated."
How do it go? Pretty much without a hitch -even down to the timing of the project. Darren kept in contact with me every night by email so we were in constant communication. When I was unsure of tile selection and design he was able to help me with that. I especially appreciate the fact that he was very hands on working with his crew. The crew was always timely, and kept the work area as clean as they could before they left each day. We were lucky to have one of his crew members (Charlie) who was not only very talented but also very good at his job.
The finished project is so much more than we every thought it could be. We are already in talks with Darren about adding on a patio in the spring. I highly recommend Seacliff Builders. Darren always seemed to be one step ahead of us and anticipating what would enhance the area. We are happy to become a reference for this company, and love showing off our new bedroom and bathroom area.
"Thank you very much."
Two appeared to be more of a fly-by-night kinda? operation.
Examples:
1. One company would only provide a phone quote
2. Another sent their bid via text message.
Some contactors were not able to start for up to three months, others as soon as two weeks. Estimates ranged from $5,700.00 to
$12,000.00 for the same job. The contractors with the higher prices included an allotment for the stone tiles, granite counters as well as the faucets fixtures. It was pretty clear we weren?t getting out of this remodel without spending
between $10,000.00 and $12,000.00. In the end we went with the Seacliff Builders for the following reasons:
1. We liked Darren the most
2. He was the most informative
3. He was available to start in a reasonable amount of time
4. His estimate included everything we wanted and was in the newly understood cost range we learned to expect
If this is the first remodel you?re signing up for, you should know the tile or stone flooring, the fixtures & faucets and counter
tops are a large part of the costs. Based on our material selections: 2 counter top faucets, one tub faucet and 1 shower faucet (handles, pipes, faucets, valves and all fittings) totaled $2,600.00. The Granite counter-top was about $700 for about 14ft of counter length, while the stone tiles were about $1,100.00. Darren was able to salvage the existing sinks, which saved us $500.00 and he didn?t charge extra time & labor for it. That?s a total of $4,400.00 options. Yours will be less or more depending on what items you select, but whatever you do... don't skimp on the faucets and fittings.
The work started ahead of schedule. The demolition portion of the job was much faster & cleaner than expected. The workers took great care in sealing off the work area to control dirt and debris while using a drop cloth from outside all the way to the 2nd floor Master Bath area.
Sub-Contractors are often the most difficult to work with and their workmanship & performance can vary significantly. The
sub-contractors used for Hot-Mop, Stone Tile, Cabinet Staining, Plumbing, Show Glass & Granite Counters were all flawless in their attention to detail and job performance. Each sub-contractor was presentable, courteous & cleaned up at the end of their duties. I would personally hire any of the people who sub-contracted with Darren. We were very comfortable having them in our home at all times. The guys were professional, thoughtful, detailed and left a completed masterpiece. The entire job took 2 1/2 weeks, 1/2 a week longer than expected due to the granite counter not being perfect. The sub-contractors who came out to do the installation returned the counter
It?s difficult to say what specific upgrade has the highest impact in our bathroom. The cabinets being re-stained was absolutely incredible, the frameless shower has an incredibly stunning visual impact while the stone tile work completely updated our master bathroom area.
My wife & I were so impressed by the quality results, we?re currently having Darren quote the hallway cabinets to be re-stained and a Jack & Jill bathroom remodel for our next project. We are happy to be a referral for Seacliff Builders. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

Two things about the way Darren works (which were both big plusses for me): 1) He prices based on him providing specialized labor, garbage haul-away, and materials you don't see (cement, drywall, framing, thinset, etc. He uses different people for plumbing, electrical, tile, demo, drywall, etc., so that everyone is expert in their particular trade. You provide all the rest of the materials: hardware, fixtures, plumbing, tile, grout, paint, etc. This was perfect for me, since I'm particular about all those things. 2) He works his jobs iteratively. By that, I mean that he first demoed the room, stopped and then the two of us took a look at what we had to work with, decided on the next course of action, then the next step in the process (install of tub, framing, and tile prep). Once that was done, we took another look at what we now had to work with, and made very detailed decisions on tile layout and pattern, how to treat edges where tile met drywall, etc., then finish the rest of the minor stuff. By taking a pause between steps, we could make adjustments on the fly, based on what we were looking at, rather than just guessing at what would make the most sense. Since all the tweaks were minor (but important to me), there was no change in price associated with these decisions along the way.
I like being the one to decide and purchase all the materials, so Darren's business model is perfect for me. However, I can totally understand if some folks might prefer someone else to make those decisions for them, and perhaps Darren will do that for you too. In addition, I like the way he allowed us to tweak things along the way. This definitely lengthened the process for the job from beginning to end (about 2 weeks), but for me, the tradeoff was more than worth it.
Bathroom #1 - $4000
This job was started about a month and a half ago. Gutted the entire bathroom (plumbing, fixtures, vanity, mirrors, bathtub, floor tile, bath tile, etc. Took the wall down to the studs in the bath area. Chopped down the top half of a divider wall in the bathroom and turned it into a 4 foot tall pony wall. Disposed of all debris. Installed new 400 pound cast iron tub (hauling it up to the second floor), added shampoo wall niche, installed new bath valve, rerouted plumbing to increase shower head height, tiled and grouted the shower and floor, installed new vanity cabinet and granite top, drywall repairs and paint.
Family Room - $1500
This was started about a month ago (as the first bathroom was nearing completion). Took a monstrous stone veneer fireplace (probably 10 feet wide), and took it down to the original simple brick (about 4 feet wide). Wired speaker wire throughout the room for surround sound. Brought in coax from the outside. Pulled down the drywall on the entire wall surrounding the fireplace to run wires and repair damage from the fireplace demolition. Patched tile near the fireplace. Redid the drywall around the fireplace, and patched and painted everything.
Although this was the cheapest job, it was the most impactful in the house. It allowed us to completely rearrange the room, opening up the space tremendously. Quality of work was top notch.
Bathroom #2 - $4000
This bathroom is currently in process, but should be complete within the next few days. Very similar to Bathroom #1 above, except that it is on the first floor, has a shower (not a bathtub), so the shower needed to be hot-mopped, column divider in the room was completely removed instead of turned into a pony wall, and we decided to keep the existing floor tile in this room because it extends into the rest of the first floor of the house. Quality of work continues to be outstanding.
After this job, we will be proceeding to the last bathroom upstairs, and then the kitchen. I have no doubt that I selected the right contractor to transform our home, although it's still got a ways to go yet.
Darren is the owner and general contractor. Charlie does the demo and drywall (along with a couple of other folks who assist when needed). Alfredo is the tile guy, although he also has some assistance when it makes sense. I never met the plumber, hot mop guy, electrician, etc., but they were there.
I highly recommend these guys if the experience you are seeking is similar to what I have described above.

"Thank You Very Much"
He was responsive to all my requests and questions, as well as a significant scope change.
His contracted work list and quotes were well managed and always matched my records.
We went significantly over timeline but for legitimate reasons.
There were some incremental costs incurred.
He listened well to my need; I asked for the showers to be done one at a time so that we would never be without a shower.
I'm a very DIY person and I asked him only to do the shower demo, plumbing, window fitting, tiling that I didn't think I could do for myself.
I watched every step (and took detailed pictures.)
His team did a good job making sure all the infrastructure down to the studs and plumbing was solid so that I shouldn't have to worry about the water tightness of these showers for a lot of years into the future.
During the work, Darren communicated well with me via email.
His team was always on site when he said they would be.
Charlie did a good job for me.
I was especially pleased with Alfredo's tile work.
The only one thing I wish I could have better advice from Darren on was grout color.
Note: If you are tiling with 1/8" seams, choose a grout color a few steps darker than you think you want. It comes out too light otherwise.
After Darren and his team left, I was able to DIY everything else I needed in my bathrooms.
Thanks to Darren and team for good solid work.
I would use this team again.
My wife and I decided to hire Seacliff Builders and go with the shower rather than the tub/shower. Losing the tub was not that important since we have another bathroom with a tub. We went to the tile supplier that Darren recommended and they had a large selection and gave us some excellent suggestions regarding the tile and design. The work started and the demo was completed in one day with haul-away of all old materials and fixtures. Tub/shower area was taken down to the studs. New shower valve was installed and wood framing for new shower was installed. Shower pan was hot mopped. Shower tile and floor tile was installed, then the ceiling fan, toilet, vanity and countertops. The last part was the installation of new towel racks and holders, lights, medicine cabinets, and new door.
The carpet and flooring leading to the bathroom were covered and all trash and debris were removed each day. The day after the job was completed we noticed a small amount of water dripping under the sink when we used the faucet. I called Darren and he came the same day and repaired it.
Overall, Darren was easy to get hold of, and he and his crew were easy to communicate with, were on-time, and kept things very clean (as much as possible for this type of project). My wife and I were very pleased with the work and with the way the bathroom turned out. We would highly recommend Darren and Seacliff Builders.
I will add pictures as soon as i can.
