Lesson learned is to have them offer you a buy out and hire your own contractor to provide the repairs. Although, the buy-out will not cover the entire cost, I think it is better to have a reputable contractor install your HVAC without the headaches and worry of bad installation.
The second time I had an emergency plumbing problem on a Saturday evening. The rep I spoke with said she had no one to send over the weekend and to prevent further damage I could try to find someone myself and send the receipt. When I sent the receipt, they claimed they had contracted with a plumber to come out Monday and denied my claim.
I think a person is better off hiring their own pick of a service person and paying the bill than putting money into one of these warranties.
Now I call today, because our unit is not cooling again. Obviously it is leaking Freon, which probably means we will need to either replace the coil or replace the unit, even though the house is only 8 1/2 years old. I put in a call last night when we discovered the house was getting very warm and they submitted the claim. I call the a/c company they contract with this morning to find out when they can come out to look at the unit, and they are telling me their next available appt. is next Wednesday, 1 week from today. When I call the warranty company back to complain that I am not waiting a week to have someone look at my unit, they tell me that since we still have one unit that is working ( the upstairs unit), they don't deem it an emergency, and I will have to wait. I have called back the a/c company I had out the first time 1 month ago, and they are coming out this afternoon. I will probably have to pay for most of the repair out of our own pocket, but I know from now on, it's better to self insure for these kinds of issues than to pay your hard earned money to a company that provides TERRIBLE customer service. I will be letting our real estate agent know about this company as well, as she is the one who gave us their brochure. BUYER BEWARE with these types of companies.
purchased warranties for. Seems 90% of any claims we've had are DENIED,
DENIED, DENIED. It doesn't seem that they want to pay for ANYTHING that
goes wrong! To add insult to injury, they have dispatched TWO different
contractors to 2 different properties and neither one of the companies
technicians showed up properly equipped or even have TOOLS to handle the job. One of the
plumbers showed up with NO tools and told the tenant that the toilet
needed to be replaced. We called in Mr. Plumber - ON OUR OWN DIME - and
what do you know - he snaked the obstruction out of the pipes and all
was well. But only AFTER 2 miserable service calls dispatched by 2-10
that couldn't do anything!!! Save your money and find ANOTHER home
warranty company. There are plenty out there that WILL work with their
customers. Too bad this isn't one of them.
The following July, while we had renters in the house, both air conditioners died at the same time. We found a great A/C service company on Angie's list - Advantage Heating and Cooling, and they were great. They have a policy of not working with home warranty companies (telling), but agreed to try just to help us out. They gave us an estimate to replace both units and we called the home warranty company. 2-10 received the assessment from Advantage, and then informed us that they would only work with their contractor, who had to do their own assessment. They gave me the name of the contractor, who I promptly ran through angie's list and found to my disappointment that they had about thirty reports which were unanimously bad. The company came out a couple of days later and assessed the unit, and reported that they could fix the problem by refilling the coolant and replacing a part. Advantage told us that they could do the same thing, but advised that the units were in pretty bad condition and we predicted that if we continued to patch them together piecemeal, the old units would fail with increasing frequency - not a satisfactory condition with vacationers in the house.
We went back and forth with 2-10 on this...we asked their contractor for their assessment of the condition of the HVAC units and they insisted upon temporary fixes; not acceptable with vacation renters in the house who would have to allow the contractors in and out during the day rather than enjoying their vacation. 2-10 refused to budge and we ended up paying out of pocket for two new air conditioning units.
I freely admit that when I saw the units before we purchased the house, I thought they might fail, and that is the reason I purchased the HVAC coverage from 2-10. However, I feel that they failed to hold up their end of the deal. I believe that their business model takes this kind of situation into account. It stands to reason that their business strategy would be to minimize costs after they collect the initial premium from the purchaser, and minimizing cost to them has the effect on maximizing cost to the homeowner in the event of a claim, if not in dollars than in frustration, time, and inconvenience. They refused to fix the problem, insisting on a chewing gum and baling wire approach to repair, and we could not afford to keep working with their substandard contractor week after week with vacationers complaining about a broken air conditioner during their August vacation, so we just took the hit.
Ultimately, 2-10's business model proved successful and they won. The took our 500 bucks, and we paid out of pocket to complete a repair that was covered under the policy they purchased from them. My ultimate advice to anyone thinking of purchasing a home warranty from this company is...don't. This is exactly the kind of "promise and then fail to deliver" type provider that is good for making deals go through when working with naive and unexperienced people, which 2-10 preys upon.
2/10 has sent various repair people to us for various repairs. We have always (with one exception) been satisfied. When I complained about the one company, they thanked me and didn't recommend them again.
