I went to an event at the shop and they had an offer where you could get up to 3 free hours to install parts you bought that day.
I went to the parts department and asked to get a quote on buying all of the parts I would need to have new handlebars put on my bike with internal wiring.  The guy said that he would look up all of the parts I would need and let me know the price.
I waited around for about 2 hours for the guy to look up all the parts or call to get information.  Once he had the information he told me what I would need and how much it would cost.  He told me that it would require 5-1/2 hours in the shop but I would get 3 hours free.  I asked again about the internal wire handlebars because I knew that they were different than regular ones.  He said absolutely that he had it all figured out and gave me a quote.  Then he said that I would need to go to the service department for one of those people to actually order the parts.
I went to the service department and again explained what I wanted done and gave him the information from the parts guy.  He entered all of the information and explained that for the internal wiring it would actually be 8 hours of shop time. Cha Ching!
I went ahead anyway and ordered the parts.
About a week later I got a call from the service guy and he told me the parts were in.  At that point I asked him about relocating my front turn signals from the handlebars to the front forks.  He said that would take a few more days to get the parts and would, of course, require more shop time. Cha Ching!
I brought my bike in once the parts were in and they got started on the bike on a Wednesday afternoon.  I was told that the bike would be done the next day.  Before I even left the shop the mechanic came out and said that I would also need to buy new grips since the old ones would be ruined taking them off of the old bars.  Cha Ching! The next day I got a call and was told that they had in fact ordered the wrong handlebars.  They had ordered the ones that weren't for internal wiring.  I was told that I could either use the bars they had and just do external wiring or they could order the correct bars FOR $200 MORE!  I told them that was ridiculous.  I said that it was their mistake and that they were supposed to be the professionals and I did not want to pay any more for their mistake.  He understood and said that he could get the handlebars I needed from a different vendor than Harley-Davidson for about the same price as the incorrect bars.  Fine!
On Friday afternoon I went to pick up the bike.  In the end the cost with all of the additions was about what I expected. A lot.  I will say to his credit the mechanic came out and told the guy I was talking to that he had not needed one of the parts that was ordered because he was able to re-use the old one and to take that part off my bill.  It was about $45 but hey, its something.
The bars and light relocation did turn out very well.  I cannot complain about the workmanship at all.  I just think that the cost was more than it needed to be and I expect that when you go to the Harley-Davidson shop to have work done on your Harley-Davidson bike they should know what they are doing.  I feel like they should have asked about the signal light relocation and certainly should have know I would need new grips from the beginning.  When you pay premium prices to have work done at the Harley shop everyone there should know exactly what they are doing.
