The details are many. I believe the first issue was the salesman. We had heard great things about their turf so when we originally spoke with Mark (the salesman) on April 19th he said and quot;We do it alland quot;. I should have let my intuition take over when we hadn't heard from him about the estimate for our landscape design for many weeks. The last week of May on Tuesday I called the company. Nancy told me that she would get back to me and 2 days later on Thursday I had to call again. They told me that they would have an estimate to me the following Tuesday. They did follow through with that.
Then Mark came out again to discuss the estimate and the job. We told him we would have to do the job in sections. He wanted to get the job and therefore answered positively to all of our questions and requirements. I had wanted concrete in order to blend in with the patio and the pool deck but he suggested artistic pavers stating that they would be cooler (unless we added cool deck covering to the concrete) and if there was a problem that small portions could be removed and replaced rather than chopping up larger areas of concrete. We asked many questions including could they match the elevation to the pool deck so there wouldn't be a tripping hazard with my physical limitations, grandchildren or anyone in general. I asked if the entire patio would be covered, if the pavers would have a gentle slope going in the direction of the front block wall weep hole for drainage etc. We asked detailed questions about the drainage pipe, also explaining exactly how and what we needed it to do etc. After speaking with him extensively we decided to go with SWG for the job. He also told us that he could hire another company to build the ramada since he knew I already had a company in mind to build that. We also were going to hire SWG for the remainder of our work, gravel, irrigation, landscaping, concrete work and lastly (the reason we contacted them in the first place) artificial turf.
The drainage box and pipe were a problem from the beginning and EVERY day we would tell the supervisor that it was an issue and ever day he chose to ignore what we were saying. The pavers started being put down with the adhesive right away rather than planning them out so I have pavers that look absolutely horrid covering my concrete patio. They don't meet the edge of the patio (ridiculous) and that is because smaller pieces would have to be but to fit properly. It could have been down in the opposite direction to have the smaller pieces cut to go under our stucco at the house and then put down the adhesive starting at the smaller pieces next to the house and work out. The supervisor said afterward when I wasn't happy about how bad they look that they had to work out because they had a line to work off of. Well the edge of the patio on one side and the house on the other make just as good of a line as the house on two sides. It was a cop out answer because they didn't want to redo the work. The edges do meet up with the cool deck at the pool for the most part but there are some areas that are real tripping hazards and once again they couldn't be bothered to remove tiles and fix it. They also were cutting tiles at the deck and have cut into our pool's cool deck in several places. I had to search for the color info with the pool company in order for them to get some cool decking that matched in color. They made the mistake they should have done it and it didn't match exactly but by this time I was so fed up I just wanted them done. The ramada company had inserted the posts and framed in the columns (going to put stucco on to match house) prior to the pavers being installed so they could be installed properly. Once again, rather than cutting tiles, sizing etc and then putting the tiles into place they worked inward and the tiles that go partially under the columns can't be put in properly and they are not level. Do to the fact that the design we picked out when talking with the salesman didn't look well with area planned for pavers we had to changed how they ended and due to cutting pavers and then removing pieces we ended up with our paver area not being the correct size or shape that we had intended. It upsets me every time I go outside that we spent my patio budget on this mess. Yes it is much better than dirt and even though we can't afford it we will tear it all up and replace it with concrete covered with cool deck as soon as we get a chance.
The drain box and drainage was such a disaster that my husband told me not to give them the last payment until they fixed the issue. They kept putting the box and the pipe down too deep. Water doesn't flow up hill and it would never all be able to get out the weep hole. After numerous discussions with the supervisor we really just wanted them to tear it out and not charge us for the drainage job because it couldn't be done properly how we needed it to be to get the water out of the backyard.
All of these issues were bad enough in themselves but it was escalated because we wanted our yard to be the way we planned and not the slap it together way the work was being done. The lack of a real effort to redo things to get them right and talking with them daily about these issues with no corrective action being taken brought us to one conclusion. SWG will not get any more work contracts from us. So, the gravel went to a wonderful gravel company that brings and spreads the gravel itself. The turf will have to wait until we find another turf that we think is good enough to fit the bill because we really wanted the SWG turf. The fact that this job was so bad just makes that impossible. I have been told that we can hire a different company to install SWG turf but we couldn't possibly let SWG have another cent of our money. When I originally talked with them when the job was completed I told them that although we had the payment we didn't want to pay then since the job wasn't to our satisfaction. A few hours later they called again wanting payment so I gave it to them...BIG mistake. The owner came out after that for us to air our issues. And, as a business owner I could see that he maybe wanted us to be happy but also defended the substandard work that had been done. His exact comment was and quot; The contract states (line item) 15 l.f. Drain Pipe and Drain Box and that's thereand quot; So, what we understand that to mean is that unless you spell out the exact requirements of what you need to have this company do it can't be assumed that the contract means for it to work properly, the word of the salesman telling you what will happen doesn't mean anything etc etc. There was an excuse for each of the issues that we had with the drainage and the pavers. He did bring out all the guys the following day to work on the drainage but since they once again couldn't be bothered to do it properly and take up pavers in order to set the drainage correctly the job still didn't solve the issue. I had been told by the salesman that we would get a refund for the drainage line item and after so many attempts of that through him, the office, and emails (that all supposedly got forwarded to the owner with no reply) etc. I finally chose to talk with the company that built the ramada and once they were finished I paid them the total final payment that was owed to them minus the amount that was to be refunded to us through SWG. They would just take that amount of money out of Marks commission (since he had taken care of that sale also). I then wrote to SWG and let them know how unprofessional and totally not business like it was for them to not take care of this refund themselves. The fact that I had to involve a company that did wonderful work (except a ton of delays) was totally unacceptable.
The footer wasn't a footer at all, the pavers will have to be replaced in order for me to be comfortable in my own backyard and the drainage box was ripped out and the drain buried within a few hours of SWG lea
"We at Southwest Greens of Tucson are sincerely sorry to hear that [member name removed] is unhappy with our service. We made every effort to make sure that she was happy, however every time we thought things were fixed and she was satisfied the next day she was not. We sent all our men and the owner to her residence to address all of her issues and when we left she signed off on the project and we took pictures to show the work completed. We were then informed that [member name removed] tore the drain pipe that we had just done out of the ground and wanted a refund. She had been told on several occasions that she would have to add river rock to the drainage swell for proper drainage and she acknowledged but never did. We at Southwest Greens take pride in our exceptional customer service and in all of our years in business [member name removed] is the only customer that we were unable to please. I hope that this one bad review will be erased with all the positive reviews to come."
