"Member, sorry to hear you felt we were not the right company for you. The technician that performed your maintenance is new to our team but by no way new to the industry. He has over 10 years experience and N.A.T.E. certified, which is the nation’s largest non-profit certification organization for heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration technicians. We hope to have another opportunity to prove our reputation was earned by providing honest service and putting the customer first. Thank you for your review and business."
Still, I understand that mistakes happen and I didn't grow really frustrated until I called and spoke with the billing clerk (after several minutes of holding). I explained what had happened and she asked if I had "proven" to the technician that I was an Angie's List member. I explained to her that I wasn't physically present at the house and our interaction was all done over the phone. She informed me that they would give me the discount, but the discount would only be $17 or $18 instead of the $27.70 quoted by the technician. I told her that I did not authorize any charges above $249.30, to which she replied, "what would you like me to do?"
Seriously? Clearly, I wanted her to refund the amount I was charged in excess of the quoted/authorized amount.
She finally acquiesced and said I'd be issued a refund in the next 24-48 hours "as long as the technician confirms my story", but it was very poor customer service on her part. I really hope someone counsels her on how to treat the customer, especially when they are considering spending several thousand dollars with the company and she wants to make an issue over $10.
I was all lined up to spend at least $2,400 for the repair or possibly even replace the entire system for several thousand dollars more. However, now I am rethinking whether this is a company I want to do more business with. I think I'll get a second opinion.
She wanted "proof" that I was an Angie's List member. Well, here you go.
"Member, please except our apology for your less-than-perfect experience with Howard Air. We have looked into what happened to cause your experience and realized a new Customer Service Rep failed to input you in our system as an Angie's List customer which caused your membership to be questioned. This has been updated and will not happen again. Our billing clerk unfortunately does not have access nor does Angie's List provide a verification access for their members to service providers (Trust us, it's been in their suggestion box). Nevertheless, this is no excuse for the phone call to provide a negative tone on our company which the recorded call has been used as a training opportunity to ensure complete customer satisfaction. We would like to have our reputation and member reviews speak to the overall commitment we have to customer service. We look forward to having the opportunity to demonstrate this on your next visit. "Member, we are sorry to read that you had a less-than-perfect experience with Howard Air. We have researched your claim and cannot see where we failed to provide confidence in us, before or after the installation of your new air conditioning system. We quickly responded to your call of a home that your son resided in and did not have cooling. We immediately provided temporary cooling to the home while we coordinated an installation (unique to our company), which we were a few weeks out, due to weather and demand of our company. Nevertheless, we ensured your property did not go without cooling. Your comfort consultant paid a visit during the installation to ensure everything was going as planned which is standard practice. We have also had a technician revisit the home since the installation to ensure performance is to manufacturer's specifications. We truly apologize as we will always take every opportunity to evaluate ourselves and our processes to ensure we are the best we can be. We look forward to earning your trust as we ensure your system operates as the day it was installed. Thank you for the feedback from all of us at Howard Air."

We have several things that separate Howard Air from all the other contractors in the valley, and our exclusive "Temp Comfort Program" is a popular one. We created this program to ensure no one goes without heat or cooling, especially in our two brutal seasons. This program is offered when a new system is purchased which includes a temporary fix to a broken down system, while an installation is being coordinated. We believe that when a company rushes an installation the customer is the one that suffers in the end.
