Quoted a low price but were highly recommended by carpenters who were familiar with their work over a number of years. These carpenters had told them I wanted a good job and was willing to pay a fair price. I also told them the same.
Therefore I trusted them. I was not prepared to be off from work when they said they wanted to start. I left for work when they did not show up by 8:45 AM and came home at lunch and passed them leaving for lunch.
Prep work consisted of caulking in front of house, puttying a few nail holes before they ran out of putty. I did not pay enough attention when I did get home. I then left to get paint and putty they requested when they returned after lunch. They left about 2 PM. I did not come back because they did not need paint until next day.
Next morning I left for work. When I came home at noon, they had already painted trim and soffit in front. I did not look around back. That evening I took a closer look. In front every nail showed. Raised areas around where screws had been used in the siding had not been scraped smooth or filled with putty. No other nail holes across front had been filled as they had run out of putty. Overspray was on roof shingles. Old trim around garage door and front door had been painted with the latex finish paint right over peeling old paint. Nothing had been scraped, sanded, or primed. Painted over doorbell button. Showed that to me with pride. Look it still works was the comment I received. Got overspray and brushed paint on garage opener keypad mounted on garage door trim. A real mess to fix needing scraping, sanding, and puttying now that all trim has paint on it with next to no prep work.
There were a lot of nails that needed to be set. If the painters felt that it was the siding installers job to set them (which I am in agreement with), then they should never had proceeded to spray paint. They had my phone number and could easily have called me. However, they did a poor job puttying what little they did.
In the back they had painted trim and soffit. Absolutely no caulk or nail holes filled anywhere in back. Overspray on security lights. Painted telephone wires under soffit. Did not scrape old excess paint. Sprayed latex over old cedar gable vent without priming bare wood. Sprayed over old work in back with no sanding or prep.
I opened a partial can of paint left. It was the consistency of water so apparently they had been watering down the paint.
I was waiting for them when they showed up third morning. Accused them of being scam artists and admitted that I had allowed them to scam me. I told them their work was s--t and to get their equipment and get off my property. I had stupidly given them a draw beyond what work they had done. Got what I deserved! Still learning life's lessons.
Younger painter went into a rant telling me I was the biggest piece of s--t customer they had ever had. He said they had quoted a low price and I had no appreciation or knowledge of what things should cost. As he ranted on he made a very interesting statement. "We have had a run of lousy customers lately." I wonder why. Then of course, I was told what good Christian men they were and how terrible I was to confront and accuse them as if they could do no wrong.
My siding installers were shocked at the work they saw and extremely embarrassed that I had trusted these painters based upon their recommendation.
This work would not even rate the dignity of being called poor. It was an outright scam. So beware!
I have detailed close-up photographs to prove everything I have stated.
