Compressor failed in unit making noise and entire unit had to be replaced.
I called and set up the appointment. I was asked if I had used Hanson before and I said "no, I found you on Angie's List."
The service tech, Chad, called and told me he was on his way. When he arrived the first thing he did was look at the inside unit. He just opened the door and closed it right back. He said that because my unit is a Rheem he had a good idea what the problem was. He walked up to the outside unit and Chad pressed a reset button near the bottom of the unit close to where the refrigerant lines enter the unit. Chad explained that Rheem units have an issue with the high pressure switch. The issue is so bad that they have put a reset button on the units that is user accessible. At this point I am thinking that I am on the hook for a service call at the least and the guy has been at my house for all of 3-4 minutes.
It would have been easy for Chad to notice the reset button tripped and open the unit, replace some part, press the reset button while I was not looking and charge me a bunch for work I did not need. Thankfully Chad was honest and showed me the reset button.
Chad went to shake my hand and told me that if the unit gives me any more issues to call back. I asked what do I owe and he said "nothing, your an Angie's list customer." Yes I am.
Company A spent 5 hours in my home and charged me ~$180 for the diagnosis & estimate (no work done). Company B spent 30 minutes at my home and charged me $100 for diagnosis & estimate, although the tech noted Company A had written with marker on the unit itself, what the problem was! so I can't say I truly got a fresh second opinion. Both company's estimates to do the work were out of my budget. As this was my upstairs AC, I could take a little time to find a better deal, because the air worked fine downstairs!
Groupon sent a special price for Angie's List membership, so I signed up and this is the first time I've used Angie's List to find a service provider. I selected Hansen's because of the large number of positive experiences posted, especially regarding price.
I called Chad on a weekend and he sent a technician out first thing Monday morning (the day I requested). Hunter was prompt, and did not waste any time. He was courteous and his appearance was professional. I mentioned I had seen the coupon on Angie's List for a free diagnostic visit, so he honored that and waived the usual $25 ($25!!) diagnostic visit fee. He spotted an additional problem-- damaged ductwork, which had been present for some years but we simply kept retaping it. He explained to me why this problem needed to be properly fixed sooner rather than later and quoted me a price to repair it, also. Neither of the first two companies had noted the damaged ductwork or offered an estimate to repair it. (although company A did offer estimates on repairing/ replacing my downstairs unit, which is working fine!)
I explained to Hunter that I wanted a working system, and did not want to replace the entire system if I didn't need to. In his opinion, there was no need to replace the gas furnace (which is only 9 years old anyway).
I went with Hansen's because they offered equivalent product for a much better price, a full 25% lower than 'Company A' (which was lower than 'Company B'!) and also because they were able to schedule me within the week.
Jake called this morning to say they were on their way. They arrived about 9:30 and were finished before noon. The weather was awful this morning, torrential downpour with flash flood warnings in Baldwin County. I would not have blamed them if they had left and returned another day, because part of the work was replacing the outdoor unit and they were getting soaked! They took care to cover my stairs with a drop cloth, and wore disposable shoe covers to avoid tracking mud into my home. Ryan and Matthew worked quickly and continuously -- these guys do not stand around and visit! I offered them towels, but other than that they would not accept a cup of coffee or glass of water. The repair on the damaged ductwork was beautifully done- it looks so much better and can only help my electric bill. Jake said because I was an Angie's List customer, the price for the duct repair was being reduced from $675 to $500 per instruction from the company owner. That was unexpected!
When the work was complete, Jake took the time to vacuum my stairs and hall landing, to look better than before Hansen's had arrived. I appreciated them working through the rain, and discounting the duct repair, so I offered them a tip to pick up lunch. Jake would not accept it, saying this company takes care of its employees!
Jake walked me through and showed me exactly what had been replaced, per my request. I asked him for business cards so I can print this review and distribute the cards with review to my neighbors and friends.
Extremely positive experience for a woman with no man on premises-- I did not feel they tried to take advantage of my ignorance of the trade!!
The technician was very well prepared for common problems and had all the needed parts in his truck. Was very professional, quick to identify the problem and very quick to fix it. The price was very good considering it includes the parts and labor.
Will be calling them again for maintenance and service.
