Description of Work: Our a/c was not cooling very well, would only cool upstairs to about 86 degrees and it was about 102-105 degrees outside at the time. We knew we would need a new unit as this one was 18 years old and very inefficient. We called Joe East and rather than go thru the house and determine what we needed to do it right they simply looked and quoted us a new unit. I felt that more work was needed as the return in the basement was blocked and improperly vented so that only about 25% of it was drawing air but he assured me that was ok. I should have known then we were making a mistake. My husband however agreed to let them do the work. They showed up to do the work close to the right time and disconnected our old unit and carried it off. They worked most of the day supposedly installing the new unit. At about 4:30 they said there was something wrong with the unit itself and they would bring me another one at 8:00 in the morning. They just left me there with no a/c at all. When my husband got home he was upset. He didn't understand why they just didn't go back to the shop and get me another unit. It also concerned us that the Carrier unit was maybe not as good as we were told if you could get one bad before it was even working. He called and left a message with their answering service that he wanted to speak with someone and the operator said she would get in touch with someone to call us. We didn't get a call until the next morning. The man he talked to finally convinced him that Carrier would stand behind the unit and my husband agreed to let them put it in. When he asked them when they would be there the man told him he had already sent them on another job and it would be after noon before they could come back. That was the last straw for us. My husband told him to come get his unit. They showed up about 11:00 and picked up the unit leaving a big hole in the wall. They didn't come inside and get their thermostat or the register grills they had put in the basement. I called and asked if they would bring back the old unit and offered them their thermostat and registers and was told the old unit had already been scrapped. They never returned for their thermostat and registers and I haven't heard from them again. We got another company that did the unit and all the necessary duct work (which was extensive). Now we have a/c and piece of mind.

The cost was around $50.00 for the house call and the part replacement, which was not bad at all. It was great work. He was responsive, punctual, and professional. They are prompt and they do good work.
Description of Work: The heating and air-conditioning company came out 8 months ago and replaced the relay in my air-conditioning unit.

This company has a repairman that cannot be trusted. My mother has a service contract with Joe East's Heating & Air Conditioning company. She has used them for years for her repairs. They serviced her air conditioning unit under a prepaid contract in June 2009. Mother has been widowed for several years and knows nothing about heating and air conditioners so when her unit began making a funny noise yesterday, she naturally called them to look at it. While the repairman was at her home, he cleaned the unit and noted that the ball bearings were going out in the fan motor. Mother suggested that she might need a new "unit" meaning a replacement of the outside fan unit. Before mother knew what was going on, the repairman was in her attic collecting information on her entire system. He then whipped out a quote for $5,200 and offered mother a $450 5-year extended warranty, which mother agreed to purchase. While he was there, the fan completely failed and the air quit working completely. He told her it would be two days before the new system would arrive and he left without trying to fix her fan. Shortly thereafter, I called mother and found out the whole story. My husband and I quickly told mother to call another repairman because we knew instantly that she had been swindled into buying a new sytem when all she needed was a new fan motor. Sure enough, another repair company came within 30 minutes, temporarily fixed her fan, and ordered her a new fan. By this morning (July 10 at 9:00 a.m.) Mother's fan has been replaced and the total cost for both visits and the fan was $490. We are in the process of cancelling the new system from Joe East and will also be cancelling the service contract. Be careful who you do business with.
Description of Work: My mother has a prepaid service contract with this company. A repairman came to my widowed mother's home to see about her 4 year old air conditioner that was "making a funny noise". Instead of repairing the airconditioner he ordered her a new one for $5,600 which included an extended warranty.

The unit that heats the main floor of our house stopped working. After several days of trying to determine on our own what was wrong, we finally determined that it was simply not lighting. Since units no longer simply have a pilot light, we had to have someone out to look at the system to determine what was wrong. We called Joe East to come out and look at the system, as my husband had used them before. After waiting for over an hour past the 2 hour window for the service man, I was told what was wrong. The control board was not making enough spark to light the furnace. I asked him how much it was going to cost, and the technician (did not get his name) told me that it would be expensive. I asked it was going to be more that 1k, and he said no, but that it would probably be more than 500 dollars. While he was putting it back together (they did not have the parts in stock) I did a cursory look on the internet to determine the price of the control board that this company said was wrong. The cost of the board was somewhere between $150 and $200 dollars. When I told the technician why they were going to charge me so much more, he got offended and said that the mark up was to cover things like workman's comp, the cost of driving over here, etc. I was under the impression that that was what the labor costs where for. When I balked about the price, the technician said that if I chose to get it on my own, that I would be charged for a service charge again and labor and that the work would not be warranted. He tried to scare me about the fact that we were working with gas and how dangerous it was. I asked that they look to see how much the cost of the board was and then call me with the price and I would then decide. He gave me a receipt that specifically noted that I had said that I did not want them to get the control board. I asked him to modify the report and he reluctantly did. Only then did I go back and look at Angie's List to find out that Joe East had a "C" rating. I decided to go with someone else, who informed me that not only did I probably not have needed the control board, rather a small part that would make the spark (a spark plug), but they charged me about half of the cost of Joe East!
Description of Work: Determine what the problem was with the heating unit for the main floor of the house and fix it.

I would not recommend them. They were not very competent and did not inspire confidence. They were however worth what they did, but just did not do it correctly.
Description of Work: He was supposed to repair our air conditioner and failed to do the job correctly and also failed to use the correct parts.

We had four contractors come out to give us estimates. Of the four, three submitted quotes. Of those three, only two were available in our time frame. Of those two, Joe East won due to their 38 years experience (versus 8 years from the other 'finalist'). Work performed was excellent. As always, there were some TIGHT spaces to work in both for downstairs duct rework as well as installation of new unit upstairs. Total job was about 1 week. The wrong thermostat (supposed to be programmable) was put in, but a quick call to their office fixed that within a few days. Also when the framing inspection showed an area of ductwork that needed repair, they came out also within a few days to correct the problem. Had to call their office again when the inspector showed that no HVAC Mechanical permit had been pulled; paid for the permit myself to get the inspection pased. Spoke with Joe East's office and they sent me a refund check for the amount of the permit since it was a part of the quote.
Description of Work: Completely new installation of 1.5 ton unit for upstairs bedrooms ( $3600), including two returns, 5 supply airs, all ductwork, set and hookup of air handler (attic) and compressor (beside house). Also rework existing downstairs ductwork to accommodate new addition on back of home, including rip-out and replace entire primary trunk (length of house) and add second downstairs air return ( $6400).

On June 11 my A/C unit began to emit a high-pitched squealing sound. I called Joe East Heating & A/C, and the following day a technician came to my house. He told me I needed a new blower motor which he would order. I planned to leave town the following day, so I gave the technician my cell-phone number and that of a friend who had a key to my house. The technician agreed to order the motor, to call my friend as soon as it came in, to install the motor, and to call me for a credit card number. Although the motor was ordered and evidently arrived sometime during my absence, he never called either my friend or me. Thus, when I returned home, no work had been done. The technician returned and installed new motor on June 26.
Description of Work: June 12, 2007 - Diagnosed problem. June 26, 2007 - Replaced blower motor in ductless A/C unit.
