My wife and I first discovered Total Comfort several years ago when we were looking for someone to clean our A/C and furnace. We signed up for their annual contract, which included two cleanings a year (fall and spring), as well as a free or discounted service call. We renewed the contract annually. Each time the technician came for the contractual service, he was prompt and courteous. About a year-and-a-half after our first visit, we had a problem with the blower on our furnace. Total Comfort recommend a complete replacement, telling me that our unit looked to be nearly 20 years old. They were a little pushy for us to make the decision that day, but the price was competitive and we agreed to the replacement.
The next time Total Comfort came out to check our A/C unit, they told us there was a Freon leak and that we needed to replace the unit at a cost of approximately four thousand dollars. Since their last visit, we had taken out a home warranty. We informed Total Comfort that we would like to check with our home warranty first to see if replacement was covered. If it was not, we said, we would call them back and have them do the work. Our home warranty company sent a technician to the house. He repaired the leak for $25 and said that he would not recommend replacement. Total Comfort called us to see if we had decided to replace the unit. When my wife told them what the home warranty technician said, the Total Comfort employee was rude and told her it was the wrong decision. However, the A/C unit is still working today--nearly two years later--and has had absolutely no problems.
The next time Total Comfort was supposed to come check our A/C under the then-renewed contract, they called to set up a window of time. My wife left work early to be home to meet them. Around the time they were supposed to arrive, someone called my home and told my wife that they were not coming. He said that they and quot;do not deal with people who have home warranties.and quot; My wife told them that we had a contract, that they were performing only preventative services that were not covered by the warranty, and that we had already paid for the visit. Total Comfort became combative, told her that we did not have a contract and that they could choose with whom they do business. I was traveling, but my wife called me very upset. I called Total Comfort and asked for the man who had called her (she had given me his name). He told me that we did not have a contract. My cell phone dropped the call. When I called and asked for him again, I was instead given to a woman. She, at least, acknowledged that we did in fact have an annual contract and were due a cleaning. Unlike the man, she was also able to explain their refusal to come with something other than, and quot;we can choose who to do business with.and quot; She told me that they did not do any work for homeowners with home warranties because using a non-approved servicer could void our warranty. She said she did not want that to happen, but that if I wanted the cleaning, they would do it. I told her that I wanted to contact my home warranty company and find out if the cleaning would void the warranty. If it did not, I said, I would like Total Comfort to come out for the cleaning owed under our contract. She said they would and that they also would renew our contract for another year at no charge. I contacted the home warranty company, and they told me that I could have any company I wanted do preventative maintenance. I only had to use and quot;approvedand quot; companies for covered repairs. I called Total Comfort back and spoke with the same woman. Her position had completely changed. She said that they would rather just refund our payment for the annual contract and not service our home any longer. I recently had a problem with my duct work and had another company give me a quote. When they inspected my crawlspace they found that Total Comfort had left debris and parts of the old furnace they replaced strewn about my crawlspace. They also found that the connections around the unit were already coming loose, despite that the work was done less than two years ago.
Given our experience, I would not recommend Total Comfort for any type of service. If you do use them, I would be extremely skeptical of any recommendation they make to replace a heating or air unit. Their reaction to our situation led me to the opinion that they might be trying to push replacements that were unnecessary. Seek a second opinion.
