This provider came to the house to provide an estimate of several home repairs we needed done. He indicated he would provide the estimate in about a week. We never heard from him again.

Response from Cascade Valley Construction
As a contractor, we don't get every job we go look at and every client is free to have as many contractors as they choose come look at their project. We also have the option to not bid every job we are asked to bid. Our job walks and estimates are free. Sometimes it is clear that our standards and the way we do business is not compatible with the client. At that point, it is not worthwhile to put together an estimate for a job we would never accept. Domonique is not the homeowner in this situation. She is the girlfriend of the homeowner. They are planning to sell the home in question and it was clear from the beginning that she wanted to do a quick and cheap fix in order to sell the home. The way she wanted things done was not the way I do business. I will not provide work that will not hold up under warranty for the new homeowner, and that is what she wanted. There was also some contention between Domonique and her boyfriend over how things should be done. It made me very uncomfortable and was clearly a situation I was not going to put the company in. The quality of our work and our standards are very high. This does not always fit every clients needs. If we lose a client or two because we aren't willing to cut corners and do inferior patchwork, that's the choice we make. Our standards are not negotiable.

Thomas was great right from the beginning. He was friendly honest and upfront about everything. I interviewed 4 contractors and Thomas was the only one who spoke to me like another person and didn?t try to tell me what I wanted. Some of the others were very pushy and tried to tell me what I wanted and some didn?t even bother to come out to speak to me in person but rather spoke to me on the phone and never got back to me with a quote or a time to come and look at the space I was wanting to have done. Thomas has got a great eye for making little changes that would save money along the way and still give us what we wanted. The entire crew was great. They were quick and efficient and cleaned up after themselves every night. Thomas had to deal with us making changes a lot! He went with them without complaining and not only had to deal with 1 wife but 2. We had Thomas expand on the room above the garage and made it into an apartment with 2 bedroom and a bathroom and storage closet and the couple we have living there he had yet another wife to deal with! And let?s be honest us women can change our minds a lot!! Downstairs in the main part of the house we took away a small bedroom and an oblong room to turn it into a master bedroom suite with a huge bathroom, a new laundry room, linen closet, an office, and a dog washing station with access to a toilet outside.

Thomas Yoney met with us twice to discuss the work. Each day work was done he inspected the work and answered any questions. He was also very available by phone and by email. The workers were always here when they said they would be here and they were very neat and tidy. The landscaping was protected during the painting and there was no paint on the ground or in the bushes. All the errant insulation was swept away. Thomas also met with us after all the work was finished to make sure we were happy with the result. We really liked the workers that he chose to do the work. They were very responsible and good at their respective jobs. We will be working with Cascade Valley Construction again soon. We recommend them highly. We feel that Thomas is a man of integrity and courtesy.
Description of Work: Insulated crawl space and battened down with chicken wire to prevent rodents. Put a metal door on crawl space. There was xterior painting of the whole house and the front door was re-refinished. Some boards and edging were replaced prior to painting. Bare spots were primed. Attic was inspected for any leakage from roof and insulation was blown into the attic. A new faucet was plumbed onto the deck. Deck was pressure washed. New lighting was put on the garage and front porch.

From start to finish Thomas Yoney and Cascade Valley Construction have been the most professional, efficient, cost-effective, high-quality crew I could have hoped for. Our kitchen remodel and hardwood floor demolition and installation took about a month overall, and I could not have been more delighted with the service and quality Cascade Valley provided. Thomas and his guys worked with us to understand not just what we wanted done, but our overall vision. He then then worked with us on options that exceeded our expectations while meeting our budget. We had a number of unexpected additions and changes to our plan along the way (who doesn't). Thomas always ensured that our satisfaction was job one, even as this meant some delays and changes or rework. His crew is professional. I cannot overstate how great his team was, from his own employees to his subcontractors. They were courteous, on-time, nice to our dog and left the workspace in a cleaner condition than when they found it. Thomas has high standards of quality. There were several times when he pointed out defects we ourselves had not caught, and he made sure those were corrected. Thomas also went to bat for us as we were having problems with another contractor. This is his own standards of professionalism carrying over to every aspect of the job. The bid from Cascade Valley was extremely competitive, but given the overall level of service we received, this I feel (frankly) was a low bid. The quality/cost ratio from this team is just superlative. Lastly, and I feel this is really something special. Thomas has a real sense of community that he carries over into his work. I have hired Thomas for several smaller jobs and he is always using his contacts and community network to help his clients. We were going to donate or throw out our old cabinets on this job, and it just so happened that another of his clients (at the same time) had a sewer line break in her house. This other client hadn't budgeted for replacement cabinets to replace the soiled ones. Thomas was able to leverage the material demo'd from our house to help this other person. I know that on previous jobs, Thomas has done the same for me. I find that willingness to look out for each other so admirable and often lacking these days.

When they first came I was impressed by the the way that they presented themselves. Job was quoted by the hour, I thought that this would save me money but in the long run the job took longer than anticipated. Even though I told them not to do some of the work that we had originally agreed to. A piece of trim was cut wrong that lead to a window not getting finished. They did cut two hours from the bill but I thought it odd that they would not just get a new piece to finish the job. Before they left they asked me if I was happy and I said I was. It was later that I was seeing things that did not impress me on the quality of work. Some of that laminate from not snapped back together, a transition piece was installed broken, etc.
Description of Work: They installed baseboard trim threw out the living room and trim around the windows and some doors. Transition pieces were also installed around all tile work.

Response from Cascade Valley Construction
We were saddened to learn that this customer was unhappy with the service we provided. As he said, when we were finished with the job, he told us he was happy, which is always our goal. Unfortunately, we did not know otherwise until he posted this report. Cascade Valley Construction offers a 100% satisfaction guarantee to our customers and we also guarantee our work, 100%. In response to some of his concerns, it is true that the job took longer than expected. The original job was estimated to take a certain amount of time. This customer changed the scope of work several times. He did request that we not do some of the work originally discussed; however, at the point that request was made, the work he was referring to had already been completed. In addition, he asked us to replace a piece of laminate flooring which required taking up about two-thirds of the existing floor in order to do so. We are always happy to help our customers whenever possible, but when the scope of work changes, so does the time needed to complete the job. We cannot add work to the job and not allow for extra time to complete it.. It is also true that there was a piece of trim that was not cut properly. It is interesting that the customer thought it odd we didn’t just get a new piece of trim. We would have been happy to do that, however, Cascade Valley Construction did not purchase the material. The customer insisted on purchasing the materials himself. He chose to order the material from a very well known, large, retail warehouse store, that in no way specializes in building material. Cascade Valley Construction only purchases materials from local vendors and had that been the case, we absolutely would have gone out and picked up another trim board. There is no way to match the type of trim we normally use, with the type of trim that was purchased online by the customer. We did offer to come back and fix it if he wanted to order a matching trim board. He chose not to and said it was not a big deal. Cascade Valley Construction credited him two hours of labor, because it was ultimately our mistake. We still stand by our offer to fix it free of charge even though he has already been compensated. Lastly, there was some concern about a piece of laminate not snapping back together and a transition piece being installed broken. The quality of the final project is directly related to the quality of materials used. For that reason, Cascade Valley Construction always prefers to purchase supplies ourselves from vendors we know carry the highest quality material. We also understand that customers are often on a budget and we try to work with them with what they have. The bottom line is that you can't use inferior products and expect superior results. We have reached out to this customer over the past several weeks to try and remedy this situation. We have had no response. Whether it’s a few days, a few weeks or a year after we do a project, if there’s ever a problem, we want to know about it. We will always do everything in our power to make the customer happy. We have worked very hard to achieve our outstanding reputation, and we will continue to stand behind our work 100%.

Another roofer installed a total new roof on my home 2 years ago. The first good rain the roof was leaking and for 2 years they could not seam find it. During those 2 years my home inside was being damaged by the water. I finally said no more and came on Angies list to find someone to help me and found Cascade Valley and boy am I glad I did. Mr. Yoney came out and gave me an estimate and I started sueing the other roofer. We settled out of court BUT Mr. Yoney started the work on my house before he knew any of that. They came and started with the roof and then finding all the damage under the shingles he repaired that. Then they came in the house and repaired the ceiling with new drywall and insulation, both walls beside sliding glass door with new drywall and insulation and found the sliding glass door had lost its seal caused from water damage and replaced that. Pulling back the rug they found the floor rotted and replaced that section also. All of this damage had also caused some mold which they also removed and repaired. You cannot tell where this repair started or ended. It looks like it never happened. If I ever need any kind of work done in the future I will certainly be calling Cascade Valley Construction!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I canot praise the work, attitude and friendliness of his workers enough and how well they all work together. Mr. Yoney also makes frequent visits to inspect the work himself. Very friendly joking man also.
Description of Work: removed and replaced shingles on a portion of the roof. Found further damage to struts and wood and replaced. drywalled ceiling and two walls in den and added new insulation also repaired rotted and moldy section of floor. removed and replaced sliding glass door damaged by water and had lost its seal. I could not believe all the damage found after things were removed. I know it was true because my son was on the roof and in the house to see it all.

I contacted no less than 3 contractors (I believe I spoke with about 5 or 6 and got 3 or 4 bids for the job. Thomas (owner of Cascade Valley Construction) gave a bid that came in around 30% lower than the lowest of the other bids. I had people warning me that you get what you pay for when I decided to hire Thomas. Well I'd like to tell you I got EXACTLY what I paid for with my choice. I got a stellar deal, with top notch work, exemplary customer service, and an old school craftsman that takes pride in his work. I live out of state and the home is a rental property. I met with Thomas when I hired him but I left town before he started the work. He contacted me with almost daily updates on the progress of the job. He sent pictures of the progress and kept me extremely well informed every step of the way. I have hired a few different contractors over the years for the rentals homes that I own when I was unavailable to do the work myself. I have NEVER felt anybody met my expectations or did the same quality of work as I can do myself, until I met Thomas. He not only met my expectations, he exceeded them on every level. If you need ANY kind of work done to your home. I urge you to give Thomas a fifteen minute phone interview about what you need done. I assure you, you will be impressed with his desire to do the job well and at a reasonable price. When you compare his bid to the other contractors. You will be convinced he is the best choice. When he finishes the job, you will be happy with the results.
Description of Work: My home has a day light basement. If you are unfamiliar with this term or type of house. What it means is the basement section of the house is half below ground half above ground. The home was built some where around 1900. The original french drain was filled with sediment and broken down. The result was water leaking in to the basement through the seam where the foundation meets the floor and also in places where there were cracks in the floor. The foundation wall had some major cracks in it. So Thomas opted to space the trench for the french drain out farther from the house that I thought was standard but he assured me it was fine and what needs to be done when there is structural integrity issues with the foundation. His crew dug the trench laid the gravel bed and drain lines. He also went above and beyond and laid a protective cloth layer over the final layer of gravel. This extra step increases the life span of the french drain. The trench was then back filled and the yard leveled. My yard had pits, valleys, and hills through out it that always bothered me. Since the gravel bed in the bottom of the trench displaced a fair amount of soil. He used the extra soil to level the rest of the yard. He also removed a LARGE stump that has also bothered me for quite some time during his work. The house went through several months of abnormally heavy rain. The basement was completely dry and not a single drop of water seeped through. My concern of the trench being spaced so far from the house proved to be no issue at all. The foundation is undisturbed by the digging of the trench and the trench channels all the excess ground water away from the house just as he assured me it would do.

This is the second phase (after a year's break) of replacing the siding on my house. Thomas Yoney of Cascade Valley Construction was extremely accommodating in fitting this project in upon last minute confirmation from me that I wanted to go ahead. As usual, he appeared in person (always punctual) to provide an estimate and then always phoned ahead to notify me of the construction schedule . While the job was in progress, materials were stacked so as to minimize obstruction of the driveway and entry ways at all times. At the end of every day, debris was cleared up and tools/other equipment such as water hoses stored very neatly, and then at the end of the job, all fittings that had been uninstalled or anything of mine that had been moved were put back in place. I was a little worried that the new siding would not match the siding from phase 1 a year earlier, but the match is extremely good and the installation is very neat - such a big improvement in appearance, insulation and waterproofing! At the last minute, seeing that there was siding material left over, I decided that it would be optimal if an additional section of the house could be re-sided (around the double garage doors). Again Thomas was very accommodating and had his crew back on site a few days later to do this additional section. His crew were once again very efficient, friendly and accommodating of my territorial herding dog, which always wanted to greet them in the morning and then spend some time "supervising". I really appreciate the care and time that they put into the job in between much larger projects that they had in progress elsewhere, and felt confident leaving to work every day that the house was in good hands. It was also very helpful that the crew arrived at pretty much the same time every morning, and if there had been a few days break, there was always a phone call to say that they would be there the next morning. Overall, just a great experience once again, where I did not have to worry about the details!
Description of Work: The west wall of my house (upper and lower storey), and front of garage was re-sided with pre-treated Hardi board, to replace LP siding. A window in the lower storey was also replaced. Thus, this project involved demolition and removal of the previous siding, installation of wooden board and Tyvek sheeting, the Hardi board siding, and then trim work.

Worked collaboratively with us to design a rather unusual front porch and walkway with concrete. Broke up and disposed of old concrete slab. Helped compensate for erosion underneath the main frame of the house that was discovered after removing the old slab. Built concrete framing and poured new slab. All workers came on time, worked diligently, were friendly, and cleaned up the site carefully after each step. The whole porch is much more beautiful than we ever thought we would have. Thomas was especially responsive to emails and phoned in questions.Even though our job was relatively small he treated us as if we were spending millions of dollars! We recommend them highly.

In January, we received notice from our tenants of three leaks in the house. After having roofers out on three occasions, we ascertained it was not a roofing issue but likely due to missing flashing or poorly installed windows and doors on the house. We subsequently had Thomas out to the house to inspect and recommend a course of action. We found him through Angie's List. From the very start, Thomas was kind, informative and scrupulously thorough. That was evident in my first conversation with him. He promptly (the next day) went to the house. At that point, we all thought it was some flashing that needed to be replaced but he gave the caveat that he would not be able to fully determine what was going on until he took the siding around the windows (that were leaking) off. It turned out that, once he took down the siding, the house had been built out of code and without any rain barrier behind the siding. Thus, large portions of the siding and framing were moldy and rotted. What started as a small repair quickly became a very large project. Thomas guided us through every step of the way, took pictures and emiled them each day, keeping us apprised of the work, aptly managed our expectations and made a nightmarish experience as good as it possibly could be. His work is beyond reproach and exceeded my expectations. He bent over backwards to work with our tenants and make the situation as easy as possible. It was clear he takes great pride in his workmanship and this shows in the quality of the work performed. We had a wonderful experience with Thomas and would work with him again and recommend him to anyone. I've never encountered a more responsive and communicative contractor. Above all, though, I felt he really CARED about us and our situation.
Description of Work: Remove and replace all siding on house, install rain barrier under siding; remove all molded and rotted framing, replace/reinstall doors and windows, as needed; demo and replace all hard surface flooring in first level of house, remove and replace rotted sub-flooring; paint house.

We bought an older MH and knew the roof needed replacing. However, right after we closed on the home there was a downpour and we came into the home to find two skylights had leaked a great deal of water into the kitchen, living area and bathroom. I had already called Cascade Valley Construction to give an estimate on the roof repair. When the owner, Thomas, arrived and saw the problems we were having, he immediately got to work to stop our leakage that day. At that point he did not know whether we would use him to do the repairs or not. In fact he told me it didn't matter whether we used his firm for the roofing or not, he would stop our leak on this temporary basis until we made a decision. He did a great job with this. Thomas brought his crew to the site as soon as he got the necessary supplies and they worked for four straight days, sunup to sundown to strip and replace the roof and skylights. I really appreciated his crew. They were extremely courteous and were willing to do anything that needed to be done. We did have a couple of small accidents, a broken light fixture for instance, but everything has been repaired or replaced to my satisfaction. I need to state that although the amount I paid was above what we had originally thought, there was a great deal of plywood dry rot that had to be replaced so needless to say, it increased the final cost. If I had one complaint it would be that the cleanup of the property around the home was good but could have been better.

This company is wonderful. I remolded an old storage bldg for an office at my home and Thomas came in and mud and taped the drywall for me. Thomas showed up Saturday morning at 8 am and did not stop working until after 10:00pm that night. He was back the next day to put the second coat on and finish up. Again he came around 8 am and did not leave until late. He used hot mud to do the job. I have a beautiful office today with his help.

Tom was in Vancouver that morning, but lucky for us, he was traveling down towards Albany and was willing to come by our house in Salem to inspect the skylight for leaks within 3 hours of my call. He quickly inspected the roof and the inside wallboard area and identified the water stains as condensation rather than being the result of a leak. He let me know the roof was generally in good shape and that the moss I had seen there was minimal and could be removed with a product I could buy from Home Depot for $10. He did not charge for the visit even though I offered to pay him for his help. But, not only that....as we talked about his background as a general contractor, I remembered the standing water in our crawl space over the past winter and I had been mildly paranoid about it as a problem. He traveled with me under the crawl space and educated me about the nature of the problem. The water was seeping from under the house due to the earth being saturated. He pointed out what I would be looking for if there was a foundation problem. Then he looked at the outside of the house's foundation and also found no problem. But, not only that...he took a look at the soil runoff from last year's rains due to a neighbor building a retaining wall, which redirected water towards our house. He told me how he would fix it and how a landscaper's plans to fix it would likely only fix the problem partially. He gave me a bid if I wanted him to perform the job, but also told me how I could do it if I was willing to do the labor. Tom was remarkable, generous with his time, and knowledgeable about his craft. I didn't pay him a dime for his time and effort, though would have been willing to do so for the peace of mind he offered me, as well as for the home maintenance education he provided. When the next project that turns up, I will absolutely call him first.
Description of Work: Tom inspected the skylight, the crawlspace, and landscaping.

siding

In August I noticed degradation of the siding on the upper storey of my split-level home. When I phoned Thomas Yoney of Cascade Valley Construction, he replied to my voice message the same day (a Thursday) and arranged to come to my house to assess the damage on Friday evening when I got home from work (6 pm). He arrived several minutes early, and spent time inspecting the siding of my entire house, not just the damaged section. He told me that despite the inevitably bad situation of having LP siding, the rest of the house siding (more protected) would not have to be replaced urgently if repainted on schedule next year. I really appreciate this, because it would have been more business and perhaps more cost-effective for him if he had recommended doing a larger portion of the house. Later that same evening I received a quote by email. After doing some background research for a week, I contacted Thomas and arranged for the work to be carried out in the second half of September. Thomas then stopped by my house on the Saturday before the work was due to begin to discuss details of power and access to the front of my house while they were working. When the construction crew arrived, they were very professional, friendly and tolerant of my dog, as well as the neighborhood cat that stayed on site all day every day apparently. They checked in with me every morning to ask if I had any questions. There were a couple of hiccups due to the nonstandard installation of windows etc. This necessitated that they have access to the inside of the house. They were very careful with everything in the rooms where they had to work, and always locked up the house when they were finished for the day. Instead of rushing to finish in the first week, they made sure that everything was done as well as possible, yet still finished earlier than I had originally thought they would. On the final day of work, they were careful to replace everything very neatly at the front of my house, and left no trace of their presence. Thomas again came by in the evening later in the week and took the time to review the work with me, answer questions and discuss what I wanted to do in future. I have had many comments from people in the neighborhood about the great new siding, and am looking forward to getting the next section done! I also anticipate asking Cascade Valley Construction to do other projects ranging from decking to interior remodeling.
Description of Work: Decaying LP house siding was replaced on a section of my house. The existing siding was demolished, structural framework and insulation checked, Tyvec waterproofing and new hardiboard (fiber cement) pretreated siding installed.

Overall, this was a great experience and a good company to work with. They had a bit of a scheduling problem so the work was a couple of days late starting, but once going they were prompt, clean, friendly, and thorough. If there were problems we discussed the solution. They were effecient. It was a good experience and I would select them again for a building project. They are one of the better contractors I have worked with.
Description of Work: They built a hip roof over the flat top roof we had on two garages on my duplex.

We love our house! Thomas' bid was not the cheapest we received, but his commitment to performing quality work and ensuring his customers are satisfied was immediately evident in our initial interviews, and boy are we glad we chose him. Thomas and his crew were 100% committed to our happiness, both with the end result and throughout the construction process. Always punctual, always professional, always looking for ways to improve our experience, we will definitely use Cascade Valley again when we begin the next phase of our remodel.
Description of Work: Thomas and his crew added a new 300sqft master bedroom on to our home, renovated the old master bathroom and walk-in closet, and brought that whole half of the house up to modern standards. The master bedroom has vaulted ceilings with two skylights, plus SolarTubes in the bathroom and hallway for more natural light throughout the house. In the bathroom we have heated tile, a custom vanity with granite countertop, and a walk-in tiled shower. In addition to the original scope of work, they installed a new window in one of the other bedrooms, french doors in the former master bedroom (now a den), new 200 amp electrical service, a hot water recirculating pump, plus they re-leveled the sagging floors and repaired damaged insulation underneath the house and installed a centralized coax/data/phone communications panel with ports distributed throughout the house.
