+ -1 moreIf you look at any positive reviews-notice most had a new roof-I wonder how many did not need a whole new roof? Additionally, as I was talking to other roof companies-I asked them for an idea of the cost if we ever did need a new roof (they all stated around $3000- $3500). Looks like Shiner wanted more than twice as much for that, too. Obviously, I would not recommend this company and hope that I never experience any company that operates like this in the future. A company that uses "scare tactics", dishonest, and unprofessional is not for us.
Description of Work: This company was the first available company to come and do an estimate. They had to reschedule to the next day even though one hour before the original appointment time, the appt. setter had confirmed it. Had to take 2 days off of work. The estimator showed up on time. I showed him the leak (less than 1 foot of water mark on one room in our house). He then went out to the backyard and used binoculars only to look at the roof. He went up to the attic and took one blurry picture that was provided that did not show anything to support his recommendation. He said he would not get up on the roof because it was so bad he would fall through. He stated we needed a whole new roof. Our quote was $8000 for a town home. I explained to him that I did not think from one small leak we needed a new roof. He showed me neighbors homes and tried to tell me what to look for to see that they, too, had their roofs replaced. I then noticed all of our roofs have this-and then he said he was mistaken of the year these were built and of course, all homes would have this, and that did not mean their roof was replaced. He then came in with a laptop and printer to do a quote. I told him I was not interested in a new roof and we had other companies coming and was not going to sign a contract. He went into that he did not understand that if it was only $100 per month why we would not want the security of a new roof. He also told me there was a system to show that we were told we needed a new roof, and when in the future we sold our home it would show in their system we were told we needed a new roof in 2009. He even got upset at one point and could not even talk. We had 4 other companies that had more positive reviews on Angie's List come out for an estimate (we just had to wait for them until the next week-there schedules were more full than Shiner's). All 4 companies did not even mention we needed a new roof and all of the companies got up on the roof and walked around on it and looked at it took pictures and were not blurry. The other company we selected did the job for $500 and did a lot more than just fix the water not coming in (a roof tune up is what they call it). I am really disappointed that this company is even listed on Angie's List as positive. It was the worst experience I have ever had to include a bad car salesman, and we were not even expecting this (we had no idea roofers could be or want to be dishonest).

+ -1 moreThe workers from Shiner were a disaster. The experience was awful. They started the work last year and they still haven't finished it. They did repair a leak on my roof. They are still trying to figure out how to fix my roof. They are very irresponsible and their prices are ridiculous for what they are doing for me. I had to speak with the head of the company because they were so unresponsive. We are still working things out and I am not pleased.

+ -1 moreToday, the day of the appointment, no one came at the appointed time. Called Shiner Roofing, after a run-around they said a "computer glitch" erased my service request. It is raining now and my roof is leaking and I am very unhappy with the lack of service when promised. The damage to my ceiling is spreading due to their mistake.
Description of Work: My roof was leading over the fireplace; called the highly rated (on this list) Shiner Roofing and set up an appointment as soon as possible.

+ -1 moreI spoke with one of their employees on the phone to set up a day and time for the estimate. She was polite and very helpful, which I took to be a good sign. The next day, I arrived at the house at the appointed time, and waited. And waited. And waited some more. Their estimator never showed. After half an hour I gave up waiting. I left a voicemail with their after-hours mailbox, and received a call back the next morning, from the same person with whom I made the appointment in the first place. She was very apologetic and indicated that the issue was some sort of miscommunication and that it had been escalated to the owner of the company. I have not yet heard what they determined to be the cause. From reading the other reviews on this site, it seems my experience was unusual, but nonetheless after that first impression I'm not likely to give them my business.
Description of Work: I called Shiner Roofing to give me an estimate for the replacement of the roof and gutters for a house I'm preparing to buy.

+ -1 moreShiner's representative spent considerable time at the house and showed great professionalism along with enthusiasm for the work, stressing the integrity of his company. His leave-behind portfolio of information about the company, its licenses and insurance, and roofing materials and warranties, was extraordinarily good. Shiner offered several inducements for the work but in the end we decided to accept a lower-priced offer from another company. We liked John's personal presentation on behalf of the company so well that, in the future, we would definitely consider using Shiner for the services it offers, and we would recommend that other homeowners do the same.
Description of Work: Shiner's representative, John Campbell, arrived punctually and examined the roof and attic. He was very knowledgeable and forthcoming with information my wife and I needed to know about both cedar shake and asphalt shingle roofing. He also educated us about proper attic ventilation and offered us several options in that regard.

+ -1 moreMy biggest problem with Shiner besides being twice as expensive as other excellent roofing company is that they did not seem knowledgeable enough to recommend the required work to be done that would actually fix our problems with leaks. We contacted them originally because of leaking in one part of the house. They said we needed the entire roof replaced. We had it replaced. The first rain (2 days after roof was installed) we had sheets of water pouring down in a new location. But they did fix the problem (supervisor of work left the job because of baby being born and neglected to do something properly) and paid to replace the blinds and repair the dry wall and repaint. But we continued to have problems with leaking in that part of the house and in the original area of leaking. They then suggested that we replace a flat roof and some siding. We paid for that work. Then our skylights leaked as well as the area the leaked right after the roof was replaced. The way that the old skylights were re-set when the roof was replaced caused the skylights to leak. When I asked for repairs I was told that now we needed new custom skylights and the estimate they gave me was over $6,000. Another estimate I received was 1/2 of that. I had the work done by the other company.

+ -1 moreWe called for an estimate to replace shingles that had blown off the roof after storms. They came when scheduled--during the day, while my wife was home and I was at work. After they inspected the roof, my wife asked how much they thought it would cost to repair. They told her that they would talk to me about it, but would not tell her. Huh?!? Really? This is 2009, not 1959... As it turns out, their visit was 2 weeks ago today, and they never did follow up with an estimate. Thanks for wasting everybody's time.

+ 0 moreThe work was excellent. Their inspector even notified us of some possible ventilation issues regarding our roof, which actually lowered the price a little. They re-placed a decent amount of rotted wood which cost us about $2,000.00, but this was expected.
Description of Work: They were the most expensive of the 3 bids that we received, but were willing to negotiate down to a more competitive price. We had the whole roof re-done with new shingles and re-placed the gutters. To be fair, we have a large mansard roof which is not easy to work with.

+ 0 moreShiner located the source of a water leak in my roof -- a broken pipe fitting -- and they provided me with the option of repairing the broken equipment or replacing the entire roof. They shared with me several pictures documenting what was wrong with the roof, and giving me the pros and cons of replacing the roof vs. having the pipe repaired with no pressure either way. It was more practical to have my entire roof replaced, and Shiner scheduled an appointment to come to my house and replace the roof. They replaced the roof in one day, and they replaced my gutters a week later. Shiner management contacted me before, during, and after the work to ensure that I was satisfied. I would definitely work with Shiner again.

+ -1 moreI don't believe that they ended up charging me anything, as they said there did not appear to be a problem with the roof. We were having some sort of a leaking problem, as there was a brown spot on a ceiling. They recommended a handyman to me to cut out the area of the ceiling to see what was actually causing the problem. Shiner Roofing was very responsive and professional. They were the company that actually put the roof on for us a few years ago, and they had done the job at a very good price. Since we were customers of theirs, I think that is why they never charged me, or if they did, it was a very minimal amount.

+ -1 moreI was not home for most of the work, but they left the site clean and I only found a few nails and staples and that wasn't until spring when I cleaned up my garden anyway! The work was done in December 07, and they were right on time and fast. The final cost was higher, as in the estimate they put in 5 sheets of plywood and they actually had to replace 11 sheets, but I did not feel ripped-off or that they did unnecessary work, and I think that was because of the thorough explanation of a re-roof that they gave me in the beginning. The roof looks good; I have had no further leaks and would use them again, for windows and siding as they do that also.
Description of Work: I had lived in this townhouse for 6 years and in the past year had noticed water damage on 3 places on the ceiling. I checked on Angie's List and had 3 companies come out to inspect and give me estimates. Shiner was the middle price estimate, but they did more in explaining the problems to me, taking photos and bringing a laptop with videos of different roofing issues and how they are repaired etc. They went up in the attic and showed me visible damage, as all 3 companies did, but they actually used a flashlight to look around thoroughly, which one company didn't do! I appreciated the extra attention to those details and good explanation of issues.

+ -1 moreI contacted Shiner to provide an estimate for minor roof repair. I had one other roofing company come out and provide an estimate for just the repair. Andrew came out within a week to inspect what needed to be done. Instead of just looking at the repair work, he also did a full inspection of my roof. He took digital pictures and showed me his findings on his laptop. There was warping of the wood underneath the shingles on the front side of the townhouse. It also showed that some repairs had been done over and over again. He provided an approximate estimate on the spot, followed up by the official estimate via email within days. I decided to go with the full roof replacement and took advantage of their financing offer. The whole process went very smooth and the staff at Shiner was very professional. They did such a great job of cleaning up after the project was completed that it didn't look like they were even there. I did pay slightly more than the estimate because some of the warped wood needed to be replaced. I am very happy with the work they did and have not had any roof issues since.

+ 0 moreEstimator was outstanding, he took photos on the roof and pointed out all my areas where leaks were likely occurring. He was extremely informative explaining the materials they used, why they recommended the solution they were providing, and answered all questions thoroughly and politely. While I did not have them do the work, they came across as knowing their business very well, and provided very personal service. However, in the end, they were 40% more expensive than another company who offered the same quality solution (from my perspective). For someone who wants a warm fuzzy feeling from the estimator, they were great. If price is a big discriminator, then you can find better value.

+ 0 moreThe work was done very professionally, but at two separate dates. I was happy with their responsiveness and clear sales presentation. The roofing job was done very nicely. However, I did find roofing nails in the bushes for months after the job was done (collecting them in my thick wooden soles!), and the window that was put in the garage was $900, which I thought was too expensive for a garage window. I probably should have shopped around more for the window, but I was rather busy.
Description of Work: Removed a 30 year old asphalt roof, replaced rotten wood, reroofed with asphalt tiles, repaired some house trim, repaired rotten soffit, and replaced a window in the garage.

As far as setting it up goes and coming out, there seemed to be some miscommunication and organization problems. The quality of work was excellent though. + -1 moreShiner Roofing was very responsive and professional. Their representative was very thorough in assessing our roof in order to provide us with an estimate. We signed a contract and paid a deposit in order to have the work done. Because we noted some possible structural defects with the roof, the representative gave us additional time to cancel the contract (beyond the legally required 3 days) so we could have a structural engineer assess the roof (not wanting to put a new roof on a structurally defective house). After talking to a structural engineer and architect, we ended up cancelling the contract because we are going to have to have some structural work done before we can put a new roof on. Shiner Roofing promptly returned our deposit. When we're ready to put on a new roof, we will be using Shiner Roofing, as they were the most professional and highly rated (on Angie's List) of the companies we spoke with.
Description of Work: Shiner Roofing provided us with an estimate to replace our asphalt roof with a metal roof.
