AMAZING! My husband insisted that I write a great report for them (normally he doesn't care, but he's pretty sure these were the best contractors he's ever worked with). Here goes: We bought a fixer upper in DC in the middle of January. We knew there were obvious problems with the roof/gutters/soffits and contacted Shiner before we even closed to come out and provide an estimate. They were fast and thorough in their response and divided out the projects so we could pick and choose what we wanted done. Once we closed, we got a letter from our insurance company saying our house was uninsurable "as is" and listed the gutters and soffits and gazebo as major issues (obviously they didn't see the roof or that would have been on there too!). Shiner understood and allowed us to be a high priority on their schedule so we could meet the deadline set by the insurance company. Oh, I should also mention that we had raccoons (yep, plural) in our attic. Shiner didn't miss a beat when it came to coordinating with the animal evictors. Their timing was perfect! The weather needed to be warmer for the flat roof. Within a few weeks they called indicating they would come the next day to do the roof (and gazebo) because it was warm enough. The following day the gutters. The next the soffits. Each afternoon they called to let us know they would be coming the following day and for which project. When they needed to replace wood for the flat roof they provided thorough information the same day. Overall, just great communication. The workers were all respectful and just went about their work. Lisa, their customer service manager was really, really great. She was super responsive - especially when I thought for a few hours that they had made a mistake related to the animal eviction - turns out they did it perfect from notes they'd received several weeks prior. Yes, Shiner is a construction company that takes and keeps notes! Who knew they existed? Finally, Boris came out to do a final walk through. He took my husband up on the roof with him and they did an inspection of all the work together. He talked through everything. This was my husband's favorite part! Mine is that the metro is above ground near our house so every day on my way to work I can see my new roof! Only bummer was that Shiner doesn't do structural work. We have a "cat walk" on either side of an extension that are leaning and Shiner wasn't able to help with this project. Would have been nice to get all the roofing stuff done at once, but I'm so happy with the work they did that I won't hold it against them.
Description of Work: We just purchased a fixer upper. The flat room needed to be repaired and replaced and some valleys needed to be repaired. Gutters were missing or broken on most of the house, and the soffit had been removed by animals on large sections of the house as well. In addition they took the roof off a collapsing gazebo so we could take it down safely.

We noticed a leak in our upstairs hall ceiling. Called Shiner as they had installed a new roof a little over 5 years ago. The estimator Ryan came out soon after the call on a rainy day to check it out. Although it was too dangerous to go on the roof, he went into the attic and determined that there was no active leak, but that it looked like water had been getting in around the furnace stack. He thought it was a caulking problem, but added that they would inspect the roof to make sure it was nothing else. He advised me that he had been authorized to quote me a rate below their minimum repair. The Production department called to tell us we did not need to be home for the repair, but we would be called the day before. They gave us a month long window. Within a week or so, Hector came out to make the repair (we weren't called ahead of time). Afterwards, he told us that the caulking had deteriorated around the stack as Ryan thought and that he had repaired it. He said the other roof stack was okay and the rest of the roof looked in good shape. He was very professional. We haven't noticed any leaking since.
Description of Work: Recaulked furnace stack on roof to repair a leak and inspected roof for other problems.

After discovering that the vast majority of my roof decking was covered in white mold, I called several different roofers for bids. Shiner was the only company that took more than 20 minutes to talk to us - the salesman, Bill, inspected not only the roof, but also the inside of our attic and was extremely thorough. He walked both my wife and me through the purchasing, installation and inspection process and was great about answering questions during the sales call and afterwards. The installation process was fantastic as well - the crew showed up right on time and got to work. A project manager stopped in a few hours into the job to inform me that more of the decking was rotten than they had anticipated, and went over the options. The contract had a specified price for additional squares of decking, so I had been prepared for this eventuality. The crew finished several hours later, and the roof has been fantastic ever since. I cannot recommend Shiner enough - they did a fantastic job and I will certainly use them again should anything happen with our roof.

The estimator, Ryan, was professional and thoroughly explained all of the issues and concerns to me. At first he considered a number of different solutions and then walked around our culdesac with me looking at and showing me how other homes were structured. He recommended replacing the existing vent with a "shingle vent" While he was here i also asked for some information on replacement front doors that he provided to me in an informative but not pushy way. Shiner was responsive but not persistent in giving us time to decide about their bid. The other bidder had assessed the problem to be something completely different and when I called Ryan to ask about it, he very carefully explained why he believed his assessment to be correct. Once we decided to accept the bid, Shiner gave us a thirty day window for project completion (they came about 3 weeks into the window). They called the night before and by the time I was home from work the next day the job was done. We paid the invoice by phone with a credit card. Now, I will say that it has not rained hard since the job was done, so we can't be sure that this solution worked yet, but the experience with Shiner was a good one and we are now having them give us an estimate on a front door replacement.
Description of Work: Replaced a roof vent that was not the proper style for our roof. The new vent takes into account a less than normal roof slope. The original problem was that water was getting into our attic when it rained because it wasn't draining off the roof and instead was being forced into the vent.

Shiner Roofing answered my call quickly and scheduled an appointment for a few days later. Their consultant, Scott Peterson arrived on time. Scott crawled into our actic space and took pictures of the area over the leak. We were very relieved to hear that there was no leak from the roof and that the water stain on the ceiling was likely caused by condensation from a pipe that wasn't fully insulated. Scott was very professional. When I asked him to stay for a few minutes until my husband got home so that he could explain his findings, he was happy to oblige. It was a pleasant experience and I would definitely call them again.

Work was done very well. We needed to prevent future snow and ice from sitting on edge of roof. This had happened before two years ago and we wanted to take preventative measures. The original builder did not install the proper materials. We had a representative from Shiner Roofing come give us an estimate. He was very thorough with what needed to be done and wrote up an estimate. We then had the work done a few weeks later. The installers were very efficient and explained exactly what they found and how they remedied the situation. The company followed up with a call regarding the services. Overall, they are very professional, trustworthy and dependable. We will use them in the future and also refer them to others. Its nice to know we can depend on Shiner Roofing for our roofing issues.

Before selecting a contractor to replace the roof, I had done tons of research and spoken to many roofers. Upon choosing to go with Shiner, I had selected the highest quality materials to be used, from the shingles down to the TPO for the flat part of the roof. I went over the job specs in detail and made sure every aspect was covered. Unfortunately the one aspect of a roofing job which you cannot control - and the most important - is the actual installation. After speaking to many experienced roofers, the one thing everyone agreed on and told me was that regardless of what materials are used and what job is being done, it's critical that the work be done by professionals who do it exactly right. This is why I felt their higher price might be justified and decided to go with them. However, given their incompetence, I have serious misgivings about the new roof and have major doubts about how long it will be before the problems creep up. The communication has been equally aggravating. The representative who first came out to give me an estimate disappeared from the process as soon as I had signed the contract. Once I started calling about getting the job scheduled he just passed me off to the receptionist. Additionally, he had made false promises, saying it would be completed by Thanksgiving and also by saying they'd include a free gutter covering to protect from debris and such. In reality, they didn't start till Dec. 5, and I later had a force the project manager to include this and not charge me several hundred dollars for it. They claimed rain was the cause for the delay, but when I spoke to the production manager he had said the job materials wouldn't even be arriving until Dec. 1, which proved they were obviously lying about rain being the cause for delay. And besides, they should not make promises if they have no intention of keeping them. They seem to just tell you what you want to hear and offer no accountability.
Description of Work: In October of 2011, I needed to replace my roof. I have a basic 3 story townhouse in Georgetown and it was 25 years old. I had several contractors out to provide estimates and went with Shiner because they seemed to be the fanciest and were certainly not the cheapest, and I wanted to go with whoever appeared to be the best. They are great at appearances - but they have failed to live up to their promises every step of the way! The project was not started at the agreed upon date and twice rescheduled. After it was started, the workers left unsecured materials that were blown all over my property and neighborhood at night. Some pieces even ended up in trees. I've made numerous attempts to contact the owner, Kevin Shiner, and have not received ANY calls back. I absolutely regret my decision to go with them. DO NOT USE THEM!!!

Response from Shiner Exteriors
We thank the customer for giving us the opportunity to work on their home improvement project. We take comments like these very seriously, and would like to address the issues raised by the homeowner. The name of this reviewer does not match the name on the contract signed by the homeowners. On the contract signed by the customers for roof replacement work, we included a 30-day window of time during which we would start and substantially complete the contracted work. The contract was signed on November 4, 2011, with work scheduled to commence and finish in the 30 day period (required by law) beginning November 22, 2011 and ending December 22, 2011. Work was substantially completed on December 8, 2011. In fact, this review was posted online while our crews were completing work at the customer's home. At no time was a specific installation date scheduled with the customer. Our consultant did indicate that most jobs were not experiencing a long wait time, and so the work would likely be completed early in the 30-day installation window. Perhaps the customer misunderstood this statement as a promise of a work start date. In addition, work was delayed by a few days after contract signing while we waited for the customer to notify us of their chosen shingle color. Without knowing the shingle color, we were unable to order materials in a timely manner, which delayed the job start. After unusually high winds came through the area earlier this week, four shingles blew off of the bundles. As soon as our crews arrived in the morning, these four shingles were picked up. No damage to the customer's property or anyone else's property was seen or reported. Our records show only one phone call to the CEO from the customer, not the multiple calls mentioned in the review. During the job, three sheets of rotten plywood, not in a condition to support new roofing materials, were found on the customer's home. These three sheets were replaced at no charge to the customer, a $210 value. Additionally, 28' of EZ lock gutter screens were installed on the customer's home, again at no cost to the customer. This gutter protection would normally have cost $200 to install. Between the plywood and gutter screens, the customer received over $400 of upgrades at no charge. We are sorry that the customer feels we did not live up to our mission, which is to determine and implement the right construction solution for every customer. You will be happy to know that thanks to your feedback, we are making changes to prevent another occurrence of this situation for other customers.

The initial telephone contact with Shiner Roofing was very positive. The townhouse we rent was leaking sporadically during rainstorms from the ceiling. We called Shiner Roofing after a word of mouth recommendation and then after finding them highly rated here on Angie's List. The associate I spoke with was courteous and helpful and answered all my questions. However, he was hesitant to set an appointment for an estimate because we were not the owners of the property. However, after we conversed a bit and after checking with his supervisor, we came to an agreement that Shiner would send someone to give us an estimate, but that any potential contract for subsequent roofing work would be negotiated directly with our landlord. This seemed very reasonable and seemed the correct way to do business--it protects us (the tenants), Shiner Roofing (the vendor), and our landlord. The estimate process was also very positive. Caleb showed up on time, he was professional, courteous and knowledgeable. He listened to our descriptions of how and when and where the leaks were occurring inside the home, and did a thorough inspection inside the house and outside, on the roof. He identified the problem, which was relatively minor, and gave us a couple of options for fixing the problem. We reported this outcome to our landlord, who then decided which type of repair to pursue and made arrangements with Shiner directly. The repair will be scheduled soon.
Description of Work: We received an estimate and we are going to schedule roofing work.
