Big Steve's Tree Care

We were extremely pleased with the quality of work. My husband and I were dreading the whole process of having to have the tree cut down in our back yard but it ended up being such a hassle free process using Big Steve's Tree Care. They arrived on time both days, it took them two days to complete the job which is what we were told form the beginning so it was totally fine, they were able to completely remove the tree the first day and the second day was used to grind down the tree stump. Everyone on the team was very nice and professional. I would highly recommend this company and will definitely use them in the future if needed.

The tree in my front yard had fallen across my yard and my neighbor's yard during a storm the night before. I called Big Steve's Tree Care and he stopped by the same day and provided an estimate. I called him back same day and accepted, and his workers came over and removed the tree. They came back the next day and got the stump out and swept up. Mr. Steven Kurtzhals was very easy to talk with and provided very fast service. I had originally called the landscaper I use from time to time and had been given an estimate of $450.00 and a job start date two weeks away. I'm so glad I called Big Steve's. He charged less than half that and same day service couldn't be beat.

The first appointment to get an estimate went well and the person they sent out was pun Tula and very professional. They followed up with a quote and after reviewing several from other providers we went with Big Steve. We were not disappointed. They showed up exactly on time on the day of service . The crew lead was very professional and made sure everything was done correctly. They took one tree down that was leaning dangerously close to the house and did a good job of trimming a second one. They cleaned up very well and no mess was left behind. Overall we were very pleased with the whole job.

Don't have exact date of service; it was done in mid-late Spring of 2014. I called Big Steve's Tree Care to have my huge sycamore tree's branches a) trimmed away from both my neighbor's and my townhouse and b) trimmed up from our driveways for more headroom. Sycamore trees were planted in front of every second townhouse when our one-block street was built in 1997 and we moved here. Steve said he'd stop by the next day to look at the tree and email or leave an estimate. I happened to see him when he arrived and went out to meet him. We talked for a few minutes about the job, then about the wildlife in our small woods behind the house and the nature-conservation efforts in our county. He is very professional, helpful, and personable. He asked me specific questions to learn exactly what I expected from the finished result, and he gave me good suggestions along the way. It's apparent that he loves his work and is knowledgeable in and beyond his area of expertise. On the work date, his crew arrived with all of the necessary tools, equipment, and machinery; all of it looking updated, clean, and well-maintained. (That tells me a lot about a provider.) The crew was professional, cheerful, and friendly. FINAL RESULT: They not only trimmed the branches away and up as I had asked, they cut them back all around the tree. Of course, I expected that to be done (for symmetry, I thought), but it seems that the length of the cut branches are a little different when you consider the sun-side (growth-side) versus the shady side. The crew boss explained that the tree also needed balance and stability. They left the both driveways, the plantings, and the street almost cleaner than when they started. BONUS ! (What I didn't expect.): 1. Big Steve's crew harnessed themselves and went through the tree's interior (top to bottom) to trim off and thin out specific small branches and the leggy shoots. Again, I thought this was cosmetic until the thunderstorms came and I saw my tree sway a little but mostly stand proud because the winds went through it, while the other trees swayed or spun around violently (dangerously) just as my tree used to do. 2. At the time of the work, the tree had already flowered and green leaves were developing. Every cut was made so carefully that, within a week or so, not a single cut was visible, even on close inspection. Green leaves were sprouting at every spot where a cut had been made. Now that's cosmetic! What more could I ask for? I can wish that, next time, all of my neighbors will listen to me about Big Steve's, or that they'll examine this tree and see the difference in the quality of work. Some paid the same price that I did, others paid more. It's unfortunately too late for a few of the trees that were trimmed this year. It's like they had poodle haircuts -- bare trunks with hacked off branches for 15+ feet up, then a dense pompom of leaves on top.

Big Steve's Tree Care employees showed up on time, knew exactly what I wanted, and quickly went to work. They did the required work and extensive clean-up very efficiently and effectively. I had NO complaints at all. I will use them again and recommend them to others.

I requested a quote to have the stump in my front yard ground down. I also asked Big Steve's Tree Care to give me a quote to remove a couple hemlock trees from my backyard. I received the quotes and they were fair. I decided to move forward with hiring them given their ratings on Angie's List and the price quote. Steve's scheduled to come out on a Friday to perform the work. They ended up only partially removing the hemlock trees, leaving the stumps behind. They told my wife that they'd be back next week to remove the stump. I was told previously by email that all of the work would be completed on the same day. I wrote Steve's to make sure they were going to remove the hemlock stumps as well. Given that I wanted a similar size stump removed from my front yard, it should have been obvious that I also want the stumps removed from the backyard. However, I know that sometimes bad communication can get in the way of getting things done, so I sent an email to be sure the stumps would be removed. Big Steve's replied saying that the stump in the front yard was the only one on the estimate. Giving them the benefit of the doubt and because I just wanted to get the work done, I asked them how much to remove the stumps in the backyard. Steve's didn't reply until after they sent a guy to remove the stump in the front yard. Their reply to my email was only to say: "When our guy went out today he said the machine will not fit in the backyard because of your deck." Steve's told my wife that they had a smaller machine but it was in the shop. At this point Steve's sent me an invoice. There was no attempt to reschedule for when their equipment was ready from the shop. There was no attempt to figure out a different way to get the job done. This company is inflexible, communicates poorly, and makes no attempt fix problems that arise. Their email communications were passive aggressive and made no attempt at customer service. Even when given the benefit of the doubt, they fell flat. Customer Disservice is the best way to describe this company.

They are excellent in their work and cleaned up after themselves. They are very competitive.

They went above and beyond to be able to do the job. Cleaned out very well. We have recommended him to our daughter. He gave us the best price. He coordinated work with another contractor doing something totally different to make it easy for my neighbor and me. Five people came out and they did the job in one day. The crew was also fantastic.

The crew showed up on time, and worked diligently through the day. The crew cleaned up all the debris, as expected. I was very happy with the service that we received, and the price was very fair.

We are very happy with the service from Big Steve's Tree Care! The came when they said they would, did the work as stated in an efficient manner, and checked with me as they did the work. Jamie - the foreman - was very pleasant and courteous, as were all the workmen. We will use Big Steve's again for any future tree work, and I highly recommend the company.

Steve was very responsive. Picked up and returned phone calls immediately, showed up when scheduled and immediately provided an estimate. The estimate was slightly higher than other providers, but they were the most responsive and helpful provider. I couldn't have the work performed at this time, but I would go with them in the future based on the level of customer service I received.

I contacted him because I mistakenly thought that the service was scheduled for a different day that it was. He returned my call and, after several minutes of trying to figure out who I am, insisted that he doesn't have me on his schedule because he never received a signed contract. He then repeatedly emphasized that I must be confused because he never schedules service until he receives a signed contract, When I told him that he did schedule me even though I was never told to sign a contract, he became increasingly annoyed and insisted that this wasn't possible. Yet, less than a minute after we ended our phone call, he calls me back and non apologetically informs me that I am on his schedule the following week. Given his unprofessional behavior, I told him that I no longer wanted to use his services. Subsequently he left a message confirming the cancellation stating that he thought I was canceling because I was "angry" that I had be wrong about the date of service. He took no responsibility and seemed completely unaware of his unprofessionalism.

The price was reasonable based on price comparison. There was great customer service presence. We would call even late at night, and they would respond. There were a couple of disappointing things, but overall it was good. I had asked them to remove snow off the back steps of the church, and they didn't do it, and then they didn't do what I had asked them to do initially. I had to call the dispatcher, and they came back to do it.

This now is my one and only tree service company. I used the company before (during late winter) to removed a dead tree and the work was wonderful; when in the spring I noticed a new dead tree in the front yard I called Steve for an estimate and received a very fair quote. We scheduled the tree removal and stump grinding for Friday (Jun 20). On Wednesday, we had a storm come through and a large tree limb (30' long x 8" diameter) fell on my fence and extended to another neighbors fence. I called Steve to see if his crew could remove that limb while they were at my house for the tree removal. Even though they were very busy with other storm damage calls, they still honored my appointment to remove the dead tree. Apparently I forgot to give Steve my work number so he was not able to give me an estimate on the limb removal. Happily he told the crew to remove the limb so when I got home all the work was done. The cost to remove the limb was fair. I am a satisfied customer.

My experience with Big Steve's Tree Care was very positive. I had a large dead Oak tree in my side yard flower garden area. The woodpeckers had been enjoying the tree for a couple of years, but it was time to take the tree down before a storm took it down. The estimate was performed quickly and the price was better than what I got from another service that claimed to be a discount service. The guys arrived on time and worked efficiently and safely. They left everything is good condition and swept the driveway when done. I opted to have keep the stump and not do the stump grinding and they did an excellent job of leaving a short, level stump, which I am going to incorporate in my garden. I highly recommend this company.

The tree cutting team of Julio, Edwin, Jose and Omar were very impressive. They were efficient, hardworking, conscientious, and congenial. They did a great job from beginning to end, cleaning up our yard as well as the neighbors' yards on both sides. They worked for three days continuously, arriving promptly each day when they said they would. They were here not just to do their job but were very considerate of our needs and concerns as well. They are an excellent PR team for Big Steve's Company. We would recommend them in a heartbeat!

I contracted the Big Steve's through Angie's List and they were prompt in responding. Steve quickly arranged to meet me at my home and provide the estimate for the job; he arrived right on time and provided a concise written estimate. The work was scheduled and Jamie and his crew arrived punctually. They were courteous and professional and hard-working. The trees were removed, firewood lengths left per my request, and the yard was left clean. This is by far the best tree service experience I have had in the area and I would definitely recommend Big Steve's to anyone who needs tree service.

Good, professional job. Big Steve's showed up when they said they would, both for the estimate and the job. The price was good, based against two other estimates. They got the job done without damaging anything and they cleaned up afterward. This is how professionals should work.

In my initial contact email, I mentioned that the stumps in question were on top of a hill in my back yard and that they would not be able to get a large grinder up there. The person who came for the estimate apparently had not been informed of this information. We were told they could not do the work because they couldn't get their grinder up the hill, and even if they could find a way to get a grinder to the stumps, they still couldn't do it because the stumps had parts of a chain link fence embedded in them, and because our rear neighbor's low retaining wall was in the way. So I guess you could say they didn't exactly exude a "can-do" attitude. One of their competitors came by the next day and said they can remove the stumps. As for all the reasons Big Steve's had for why they couldn't do it, they said they were challenges, but nothing that would prevent them from doing the job.

They were polite, competent, and did an excellent job, I think. At the end of the job, they asked me if the result was what I wanted. I asked them to cut some more branches from the part closest to the house and they did. The main guy did not have nails on his shoes, which is good. He climbed up and swung around with a harness around his waist and legs, which is safe. He seemed to cut the large branches just so close to the trunk, but no closer, presumably to help them heal over without rotting. He took care to finish the edges of the large cuts. The two guys, on the ground, took care not step on my tender garden plants. They put ropes around the big branches overhanging the house so they did not fall on the roof. Afterwards, at my request, they looked at another tree in the back yard that is overhanging the shed. They said that it would be possible to just cut off some branches, but eventually the whole tree would have to be removed. They didn't give me a price on it because their boss, Steve, usually does that.

This experience was great. I used Big Steve's a couple of years ago to remove a big maple in the back and was so impressed with the service, I contacted him again when I had this small pruning job. I have used other tree services in the past, so I am able to recognize good service and good work. For this pruning job I contacted Big Steve's via e-mail and had an estimate the next day. I contacted another recommended tree service just to make sure the price was competitive and it was. (BTW, the other tree service took almost a week to get back to me.) I contacted Big Steve's to do the job via e-mail and was immediately contacted with a service date and time - which was less than a week away. They did a great job on the trees. I would use this company again in a heart beat. Good work and great customer service.

I inquired through the website and talked to Steve on the phone a day or so later. We scheduled a time when he could stop by the house to look at the trees/shrubs while we were at work. I followed up with an email to confirm what we had discussed. We tied some string around the trees/shrubs that needed to be removed to help him identify them. He came out and left the estimate, which was quite favorable compared to another estimate we received. I scheduled the work over email, and his crew came out that day on time, at which point we walked through the work to make sure they were on the same page. I left for work and came back to see that everything looked good and contacted Steve to get the payment details settled. Overall, it was a very straightforward and efficient process!

I called Big Steve's Tree Care for an estimate to remove the dead limbs from a number of trees on our property. I thought his estimate was very fair and reasonable compared to others, so I decided to hire his company for the job. He called later that day to set up a time for his crew to come and do the work. They showed up on time, worked all day long, and were very professional. The trees look great, and we will definitely use them again.

Steve came on time, took notes as we went along and provided a written estimate at the end.
