Big Steve's Tree Care

I have used Big Steve's Tree service about 3-times. They've removed trees for me, put a cable in a tree (to keep it from splitting) and removed some seriously big branches from trees. Steve's crew just removed a monster white oak that was threatening my house - they were prompt, efficient, and professional (as usual). I'm writing the review to explain WHY I chose them the first time over my other estimates. First, they are VERY reasonable compared to the competition. Second, and more importantly - they know what the heck they're doing. Before I chose them the first time, I had two estimates to remove a really big, nasty branch from a giant white oak that hung over my whole backyard. The first guy said, "no problem - $1600" - but Steve said "I wouldn't remove that, the wound would be too big and it would eventually kill the tree." He quoted me about $500 to remove a series of smaller branches on the main branch. Based on that, I trust that he'll give me good advice. I've used him three times since...working on #4. To summarize, not only were they the best price, they're loaded with integrity. I appreciate that. A+

Service was good but clean up was poor. We were told they would come back in the afternoon to rake and clean up but they never came back. All other services were completed and done well for the price paid.

Delivery was on time and the quality of the wood he sold me for my fireplace was great. I've used him two years in a row and he was consistently good. The only problem was the manner of delivery which basically consisted of his men throwing the wood on my lawn from his truck parked on the street. Still, for his price, that was fine. I just had to get home from work quickly to pick it up because it looked pretty bad by the time he drove away.

The crew arrived on time this morning and were quick to get started. The guys were professional and made sure that the items on the deck were moved and protected before starting the project. The crew knows what they're doing and everyone knows their part when taking down the trees. I had a couple that were very close to my house, but they were very careful to make sure that all limbs came down away from the house. Cleaned up pretty well and left everything the same as before, just without the trees! I would definitely hire these guys again.

I was very pleased with the value and the timeliness of the job from the time I requested the estimate until the time the work was done. Prompt and reliable. The work was done efficiently and the crew listened to my concerns about being careful because of the proximity of the house decks to the trees.

Needed some branches removed and basic service. Showed up on time, did exactly what I needed. Would use again.

I didn't want to rate right away because I wanted to wait until the season started so I could comment on the quality of the wood. It was great. The company was punctual, polite and the value paid for the wood was very fair. I will use this company again.

Wood was stacked neatly per our request. Price was a little high but they arrived on time and did the job as requested. I would recommend to others.

The company we previously used now has a contract with the state and we had to find someone on short notice. When the companies we called were unavailable, we checked Angie's List. This team cleared the entrance to the property which had been completely blocked by county snow plows and proceeded to clear the entire parking lot. They arrived when they said they would and did a great job at a fair price. If you need snow removal for a commercial property, definitely contact Steve.

On 2/7/14 Mr. Steven Kurtzhals provided an estimate for cutting a tree down (leaving the wood in 16? sections for firewood) and grinding down the tree stump, which was accepted by me on 2/9/14. There were no conditions/complications indicated to me with regards to the stump grinding at the time of estimate. The tree was cut down on 2/12/14 in the morning, as scheduled. I was told by a crew member that the stump would be grinded later that same afternoon by different person. However, that did not happen, thus, wasting my time waiting that afternoon. After e-mailing Mr. Kurtzhals in the evening, he called and explained that they were busy that afternoon and could not get to it. Common courtesy required a telephone call to inform me that they were not coming. Another day for completion of the stump grinding was scheduled for 2/18/14 in the morning. Upon arrival, the person responsible to do this job informed me that the fence needs to be taken down in order for the stump grinding equipment to get to the back yard, which was an absurd! Later, Mr. Kurtzhals called and restated the same. To my question why didn?t he measure the door width leading to the back yard, he indicated that standard doors are 36? wide, which even if true, is not an excuse for his omission to measure upon providing the estimate and agreeing to do the job. Specifically, when he knows that large equipment needs to pass through the door. The failure to accurately assess the situation is not acceptable and not professional. Now, I have to start searching for an alternative company to complete the project in addition to my wasted time on two occasions.

Big Steve's returned my message quickly, did the estimate quickly via email, and made the entire experience easy on us. Their price was significantly better than the three other estimates we received for the same work, and their customer service added to our positive experience.

This did not include stump gronding because of the location of the trees.

In addition, they performed larger work at our neighbors house including tree removal and taking down large branches on trees 100 feet tall.

This was the third visit by Steve's team. The first two jobs were bigger, but Steve's team demonstrated the same punctuality, attention to detail, and professionalism for the smaller job. I really appreciated Steve's willingness to come out and inspect the property before giving the estimate for the tree/bush removal (accuracy means no unpleasant surprises later!). Next, Steve and I exchanged emails about the nature of the work, the price, and when it would be completed. This was really helpful, as I didn't have to find ways to reach Steve by phone during regular business hours; I could email him in the evening and receive a response by morning. When his team arrived, they reviewed the work to be done and then immediately went to it! They were efficient, effective, and cleaned up after the fact. It's no wonder at all that I keep having them come back!!

They did a phenomenal job. I was very happy with them. The man that came out to our property was very knowledgeable in his trade.

I got the impression that he was very noncommital. He kept emphasizing the fact that it was going to cost more, but would not give me a price. I told him I needed someone to come out right away. I had a branch that had broken off and not fallen yet. He acted as if I was bothering him. He said it would be at least $400 to come out because of the weather. Then he said to remove a few tree branches it could be up to $2000.

ordered a half cord of firewood from Steve. Truck arrived within 1/2 hour of scheduled time and unloaded the wood. It was exactly as described - seasoned oak cut to fireplace length. Steve's people were friendly, courteous and unloaded the truck in very short order. Was very pleased with everything - at about half the cost of the large local garden center. Will definitely use them in the future.

I was extremely pleased with the service of Big Steve's. From the responsive return calls, thoughtful estimate that Steve himself came and made to the 3 person crew who performed the work, it was a good experience from beginning to end. The crew was very professional, arriving right on time and made quicker work of the job than expected. I was a bit apprehensive because I had to leave prior to them finishing but they continued their work quickly and carefully stacked the cut wood as requested in the areas I designated. They also left the yard very tidy afterwards. I always make a point to get at least three bids on any major job I contract for and Steve's was the best price and I felt most confident in his ability to deliver.

Steve came out within a couple of days of contacting him. He was professional and thorough. Provided us the estimate. Went back and forth on what we actually wanted him to do. Signed the work order. Scheduled the work. Arrived earlier than promised. Completed all work except tree stump grinding that day. Came back a couple of days later to complete the work. And then sent us a bill!! Would definitely use them again.

Everything went great. As usual, the team was punctual, and the scheduling was easy and reliable. The debris was cleaned up nicely. I have used this company twice now, and would definitely do so again.

Liked having a detailed written estimate. Crew was punctual and all work was done in a few hours. Although the fig tree (which was growing right beside the house) still has two stumps with leaves remaining, we figured the grinder couldn't get that close to the house.

Big Steve's responded quickly after receiving my initial email inquiry. On the day of delivery they called ahead of time per my request and arrived on time. There were three men and the unloading was quick and efficient. The wood looks good- dry oak, split perfectly for fireplaces.
