Called to schedule the work and was told it would be a couple of days but then one of the supervisors called and sent two guys out right away to clean out the dryer vent. Tenants had recently moved out and the place was left a mess. There were cigarette butts in the dryer vent, so I knew I needed to get it done. At first, we couldn't find the exhaust outside, turned out it went up through the attic. They provided a dryer hose replacement and reattached the discharge to the vent at the roof. They went above and beyond on that part of the job, although they wound up leaving a ladder outside while looking for the discharge. I called and left the supervisor a message, but they never came back to get it. Free ladder! I thought I would be able to slip out the old bathroom exhaust vents and replace them, but it didn't work out that way. They were able to install the new ones without too much trouble. They had to get a bit creative mounting the new metal cased fans though, due to the construction of the unit and I think it took them quite a bit longer than they expected. I will definitely call them again.
Description of Work: Dryer vent clean out. Remove two existing plastic housing bathroom exhaust fans and with replace customer supplied fan assemblies.

We had used them for about five years in the past when we lived here in this area and then we were away from the area for about four years, and we now use them again. They were on time and very professional. They told us about a $50 rebate from Virginia Natural Gas and also about a free thermostat we could get through them, which we didn't know about. We were able to get both the thermostat and the rebate. They are probably on the medium to high side but that is a guess. We didn't compare prices because we had such a good experience with them before.

I called five companies for estimate to replace my old system. All the sales pepole were professional, but Smith & Keene seemed to be the most honest and didn't try to sell me more than I needed. After evaluating all the estimates including warranties, Smith & Keene gave me the best price and warranty. The installation was scheduled to start at 8AM. The installers were there on time. They were clean, professional and very informative. They worked straight through the day and finished in one day. Their clean up was impeccable. Overall the experience with all of Smith & Keene was great.

The install appeared to go well. However the next year during the annual maintenance check (performed by Smith Keene since I had a maintance contract with them) the refrigerant was low and they topped it off noting this was not uncommon with new installs. From then on until I started to queston the company this year, the unit was constantly needing refrigerant but they never mentioned that the system could be leaking nor did they offer to check - they just continued to fill it with out testing. Then this year I paid a professional industrial HVAC engineer to come and check out the system. He immeediately (within 10 minutes using a simple leak detector) without any difficulty foud two refrigerant leaks one in the coil and one at the filler point. My concern was that this supposedly reputalbe company whom I had contracted with to maintain my systems ignored a leak (which most definately existed from install and would have been corrected for no cost to me under the parts and labor warrantee) which now is going to cost me $1500 to correct. I wrote a letter of complaint to the company and did not receive a reply back - I really did not expect one. Related to this install was another problem which was when they installed the unit they did not install it level. The unit and drain pan were leaning back away from the drain hole and during one of the times when the refrigerant was low which causes the coil to ice up, the melt water overflowed the pan and damaged the wall and ceiling of my den. They did level the unit after I complained but did not pay to have my room painted -again another cost to me. Bottom line is that I paied this company close to $6000 to purchase a top line HVAC unit and $283 a year for preventive maintenance only to have them not do their job, damage my home and finally cost me $1500 to repair a defect in a new unit. This is not a proffessional company. You have many options for your HVAC needs and you wwould do best to steer clear of Smith Keene.

I wasn’t extremely happy with them. About two years after they did the work, the home inspector found that some of the insulation had come off of the duct work because there was condensation between the duct work and insulation. He said it was pretty much because of improper installation. I called the company to have them take care of it, but the person on the phone wouldn’t give me a straight answer and kept giving me the runaround. I called a couple of times and couldn’t get any satisfaction so I went there and was able to talk to the right person. They came out and took care of it but they rubbed me the wrong way. They are talking about charging me for the work, but I think that’s stupid because it has only been two years. I would suggest that people go somewhere else before going to them. Except for that thing under the house, I think their work was pretty good and there was a lot of work involved.

the crew arrived on time with all the components, parts and pieces that were needed. they covered any carpet and furniture that might be affected by their work. the job was completed in one day. there were two problems. they cracked the ceiling during the replacement of the air handler in the attic. they had a contractor repair the ceiling and a painter paint the repair and the ceiling looks good as new. the second problem was electrical, the two speed compressor was using only one speed and the variable speed blower was only using one speed. smith & keene corrected that problem. bottom line : the replacement job was completed in one day and looks very professional, the ceiling was repaired and painted within about a week and the electrical problem corrected the day after i called. the particular workers that did this job were very good on the mechanical part of the replacement but need to brush up on their electrical skills.
Description of Work: replaced 2 1/2 ton heat pump with a 3 ton unit which involved the compressor / condenser unit outside the house and the air handler / blower and air quality filtering device in the attic, also the refrigerant lines between the inside and outside units. the air intake opening in the ceiling had to be enlarged and the thermostat replaced.

I wish I could rate Smith and Keene higher since the sales person was so helpful. Without pressuring me, he helped me decide which HVAC unit to choose to obtain the desired result. (The original HVAC system serving 3 floors was insufficient to deal with the summer heat.) He also located the style vents I wanted. The problem was the installation. The cuts in the plaster ceiling for the vent openings were not the right size leaving gaps in the plaster along the vent edges. Where 3 vents were along a wall, each vent was set off the wall at a different distance. Several weeks passed where my calls about these problems, as well as my contractor's calls, to S & K were not returned. I was finally able to get their attention by sending a certified letter with pictures and withholding final payment. During this time, the HVAC stopped cooling. In the end, more cuts had to be made, the plasterer had to return to make repairs and the cooling component repaired. Smith and Keene did cover the expense for the repairs. My "antenna" should have gone up when the installers said that S & K didn't do much commercial work so they were unfamiliar with the type of air vents I was using. Due to the narrow width of the vent cover, the cut for the vent opening does not allow much room for mistakes. Rather than leave the workmen alone, I should have micro-managed the job. Everyone I dealt with was most accommodating - after I got them on the phone. The workers were friendly, punctual, professional and cleaned up each day. The issues were resolved. The HVAC has made a major difference. As with any major rehab/installation, patience is a virtue.
Description of Work: Installation in the attic of a HVAC system for the 3rd floor of a townhouse. Specified air vents narrow in design and profile to be installed in the ceiling. This type of air vent is used most often in commercial or contemporary applications. Installation required cutting openings in a smooth plaster ceiling. Due to the narrow width of the vent cover, the cuts for this type of opening do not allow much room for error.

We had a Janitrol system, less than 10 years old which failed and had to be replaced. We replaced both outside and inside units. We also replaced the furnace in order to match the system. We replaced the Janitrol system with a Lennox. Smith and Keene is a provider of Lennox equipment. Two technicians did the work in two days with no problems. So far so good with the Lennox system, it is much more efficient and cost effective than the Janitrol shich was loud, inefficcient and expensive to operate. It also constantly leaked since we had the house built in 2002. When the downstairs system fail, which I expect to happen in a year or two if that long I will replace it with a Lennox and will use Smith and Keene to install.

I called for an estimate. Company sent a very qualified person to visit my house and perform the estimate. The estimator arrived on time and spent a couple of hours checking out the job. As an engineer, I appreciated the careful review and got the impression that the estimator knew his business and that the company was highly qualified. While I, in the end chose a competitor, there was nothing that would prevent me from considering this company for future business.
Description of Work: Quoted work to install Geothermal AC/Heating. Individual who quoted installation work was very professional and knowledgable. He performed a demand analysis to determine estimated loads and fully examined current system. The quote was fair for the amount of work required. However, I decided on an equally qualified contractor specifically consentrated in this specialized field. and had the advantage of having their own well drilling crew.

I contacted Dan Baxter to clean my 20-year old air ducts because I was having a problem with very fine powdery dust in my upstairs bedroom & breathing problems at night. He inspected my heat and air system in the attic and showed me where the ducts had not been properly attached to a new furnace installed a few years ago. They were pulling air & particles from the attic and distributing it throughout the house. He did the rapairs, replaced some flexible ducts that had gotten damaged, cleaned & sanitized my whole air duct system. I no longer have the night time breathing problems and dust. He also cleaned my dryer vent, which was almost completely blocked, and now my laundry dries in half the time, even the towels. Mr. Baxter & his staff were very courteous, careful, & clean. They gave thorough explanations to all of my questions. I was satisfied with the price too.

I manage my son's property in his absence, and hired Dan Baxter to work on his house because I had such a good experience with AACAD on mine. I wanted to see why there was a 10+ degree difference between the upstairs & downstairs rooms. He found several "repair jobs" that had been done on the ductwork in the attic by previous owners. Under several layers of various kinds of tape, the baffles had been shut off, & there were large holes in the ducts. There were several major air leaks in the furnace/AC unit itself & the emergency switch had been taped down in the "off" position. After having the repairs done & ducts cleaned, the occupants can feel a huge difference in the indoor climate, & energy bills are lower. The staff are very efficient & professional, & I was very pleased with all aspects of their work.

They are timely at what they do and they know what they're doing. The only thing I question is their pricing. They installed an AC for my son and he was very happy with the system and the service as well but we felt the pricing might have been set a bit high. My lack of knowing precise and accurate industry pricing however could be . I actually activated an Angie's List account to assist me in those pricing decisions. They are indeed a reliable company in my oppinion in every other regard.

On February, 2009 we noticed a musty smell coming from under the sink. We removed all of the items under the sink (cleaners etc.), removed the Rubbermaid lining covering the bottom of the cabinet under the sink and discovered that the floor of the cabinet was black with mold. We called Smith and Keene to come and inspect the damage. The serviceman came on April 1, 2009. He removed the food disposal and said that we needed to buy a new one and he could get it for us. He did not elaborate on what the problem was that caused the water damage under the sink. Obviously this leak had been occuring over a long perios of time. I told the serviceman that the disposal had been replaced at least two years ago and had not been causing any problems. In fact, their serviceman was the last one to have done any work under the sink. I asked to speak to the Supervior of the serviceman and was told that they would do the caulking of the sink, but they would not be responsible for anything else. I fully described the damage and he would not discuss the matter any further. Our sink, disposal, dishwasher has been disconnected since April 1st. Since they would not consider their responsibility to correct the damage, I have no other recourse but to send this negative report with the hopes that other senior citizens, and all others, will be spared having this kind of situation. We will now have to contract with another plumber and cabinet maker and possibly an expert in drywall replacement to correct this horrendous problem. We are seeking legal aid and have reported this problem in writing to the Better Business Bureau. Our homeowner policy has a $1000 deductible and we are pondering whether we will even be eligible for replacement damages. Please help us.
Description of Work: In the Fall of 2008 we hired Smith and Keene Plumbing and Electric to remove our castiron kitchen sink, disconnect water line and disposal in preparation of the installation of new granite counter tops. The serviceman came on Sept. 11, 2008 and performed the above. He was to return later that day to reinstall the sink, caulk the sink, reconnect the disposal etc. but since it was late in the afternoon, he did not come until the following day. On Sept. 12, 2008 the Smith and Keene serviceman came, replaced the kitchen sink and we assumed that he had reconnected everything satisfactorily. We were unaware that the caulking had not been done to secure the sink to prevent leakage. My husband and I are retired Senior Citizens.
