We contacted Rob when we were expecting our first child and needed to clear out our library/office to make room for the baby. We told him what we were looking for and what we needed to store. Our home was a little cape cod and the living room was small, so we needed something that wouldn't overpower the space. Rob immediately put together a rough drawing for us on the spot that included everything we needed. Then he provided us with a full estimate including size specifications. We agreed to the price and plans and were eager to get started. Rob was willing to take on our project during the week between Christmas and New Year's. (It was just convenient for us to be home and keep our dogs out of the way so he could work). I cannot say enough good things about our experience. For starters, Rob noticed right away that the floor had a slope toward the front door, as lots of old homes do. But that meant he had to make sure that the shelves, molding, and finishing pieces were all level even though the floor wasn't. Rob also noted that we had some crown molding and decorative molding around our fireplace, and provided lots of options so that the style of the cabinets would match. Another challenge of our project was that the front door had to swing out and NOT be blocked by the cabinets, and the other side of the cabinet was right next to the hallway, so we had to consider the ability to move furniture and ourselves through the space without crashing into the cabinets. An electrical outlet and light switch were also considerations and had to be adjusted to make sure they were accessible. None of these things occurred to us until Rob mentioned them. Rob brought over door and trim samples, as well as edging options for the main top shelf. He explained all of the options in detail. He even pointed out that our remote controls might not work through the wood once it was painted so we might have to open and close the doors to use the remotes unless we wanted to use glass. We did not want to use glass on the doors so decided to take our chances. (He was exactly right, the remotes worked through the unfinished wood, but not with the paint. It was no problem for us). Rob put together the bottom part first and needed to come and take more precise measurements. He worked with my schedule, and did not disrupt my day at all. When Rob was ready to install the pieces, he protected our floor, furniture, and everything in between to prevent dust from damaging them. Our cabinets were completed and installed in about 5 days. We could not have been happier with them. We had them painted and they were absolutely perfect. Rob had included holes with liners to hide cords and left behind some extra liners in case we wanted to drill additional holes ourselves. He left behind no evidence that he had been there - I think the wood floors were cleaner when he left than when he arrived. He even made friends with our dogs and was patient when our youngest one kept stealing pencils and other tools from his work bag. We moved a month ago to a new home and I was so sad to leave behind our cabinets. I never expected something so functional to be so beautiful too. I lived in that house for 12 years and don't know how I lived without our built-ins for so long. They changed the room completely and somehow made it look bigger even though they went to the ceiling and were full of our stuff. Our realtor said they would be a huge selling point and the lady who bought our house agreed. I am already planning projects for Rob at our new home - including built-ins exactly like the ones we had at the old house, a custom wine rack for our butler's pantry, and cabinets for our living room. I am fully convinced that Rob can do anything - and do it well. When we first talked with him, I was surprised that he didn't advertise or have a web site, but he said he really worked on referrals more than anything. It was obvious to me how a small business owner like Rob could stay completely busy on referrals alone. I am happy to share photos of our project, Rob probably also has some himself. He really is a fantastic artist, a detailed carpenter, and a pleasant and fair person to work with. I look forward to working with him again.
Description of Work: Rob Jernigan designed, created, and installed custom built-in cabinets for our family room. The cabinets held our TV and stereo and all of the components and cords to go with them, as well as an entire wall of shelves for books, and lower cabinets with adjustable shelves for toys, games, more books, and storage. The cabinets were made of solid wood and were really SOLID. Those things aren't going anywhere.
