+ -1 moreOur AC unit broke down on a very hot night in August. We made a call for service at 8am the next day and were given a window of noon-5pm for a repair technician visit. They called at 10am and said a technician was available earlier than expected. He was very profesional and friendly. The diagnosis was a busted motor with the wrong size compressor run capacitor. He said most of our problems were due to a lack of proper maintenance. Truthfully we had not had the unit checked in the last two years, though the last time we had a maintenance check we used Christian Brothers and the service person at that time didn't mention an incorrectly sized compressor. The service technician answered all my questions with regards to eventually pricing a new unit, the city's rebate program, and told me about both the energy savings rating and age of my current unit. He also recommended that we not invest in a new system, thought he did recommend signing up for Christian Brother's bi-annual maintenance program. This didn't seem like an up-sell to me because he was willing to accept both a 10% off Citysearch coupon and add an additional 10% off for purchasing the maintenance program. The difference in price was only $15. I was very pleased with the speed, professionalism, and value my family received from Christian Brothers. Best of all it is finally cool in this house!
Description of Work: Our AC unit was not cooling the house due to a malfunctioning fan/compressor motor and needed some additional basic maintenance.

+ -1 moreAbout 6-8 weeks after the service visit the overflow pan in the attic filled up because the drain line got clogged and that automatically shut off the a/c. Supposedly they had cleaned the line as part of the service in March. (Since I have a shop vac I was able to suck up the water in the pan and get the a/c running again temporarily.) When I called to complain, they immediately sent out a service person to fix it. About 6 weeks later it clogged up again. This time I did not bother calling and used the shop vac to get the water out and blow out the line, and then used 50-50 water-bleach to try to clear the line. (So far, 8 weeks later, it's still good.) At that time I noticed they had re-done the drain and put in a different kind of shut off switch for the overflow pan. And, when I used the bleach mix to clear the line, the whole house smelled of bleach for several hours indicating there is a leak in the attic unit near the drain line. Spraying one squirt of an air freshener at the drain line confirmed this. I suspect but cannot confirm that the changes to the drain line induced the blockages or caused the leak. Or maybe maybe they miss-installed the new filter and/or uv light. In any case, I'm going to find some other company to find and fix the leak and check over the system. Besides that, they routed the control wire to the UV lamp so it lies in the overflow pan. If we get water in there again, it's a possible short/fire hazard. BTW, their sales people have called me 3 times since the service visit to try and sell me a service visit when they had already serviced the system. That was obnoxious.
Description of Work: Service Experts (used to be Strand Bros) performed a semi-annual inspection on my heatpump and attic unit for the cooling season. (The inspection fee is around $125, the additional charge was to replace the electronic filter element and UV lamp.) Note: Costs are estimated. I did not look up the exact amount.

+ -1 moreI have used Christian Brothers AC & Plumbing twice and I was quite happy with them for both times. They were not cheap but their service guys were nice, friendly, very efficient. They solved my problem right away. They were pretty quick to get here too, which is important when your house is real hot. I am very happy with them and I will use them again for plumbing.

+ 1 moreDarryl attributed it to a systemic drainage problem and fixed it right away.What we particularly valued, however, was Joel Slay's willingness to write two emails that described exactly what was broken and what needed to be done to prevent future problems. We were able to use his description to present to the condo association in consideration of reimbursement. He was prompt with his responses and professional. We have also used the company for AC work and liked them enough to get a service contract.The only misstep is that we used a coupon offered by Living Social or a similar group. The wording on the coupon was unclear and we expected to receive a discount we did not receive. Mr. Slay tried to address the concerns by rewording future coupons as one other customer had the same misunderstanding.

+ -1 moreHad a problem with bathtub facet ( standard Moen). Hot water facet would not engage and turn on. After his 5 minute evaluation, plumber wanted me to take off the tile front covering off the bathtub ( my responsibility ) in order to get to the entire pipe system; then, go buy a whole new facet set from Home Depot ( or wherever), and, they would replace it for a simple labor charge of $677.00. The reason: parts were old ( 15 years), parts probably couldn't be found, etc....... Then, I would be responsible for putting it all back together. After debating this; I discussed the situation with my neighbor. We determined that it needed a new cartridge ( which simple be replaced from the top ), went to plumbing store, bought the commonly stocked Moen $9.00 cartridge, and had it repaired in 30 minutes. ) This is outright greed, and trying to rip off a customer in my opinion. Be careful with this outfit.
Description of Work: Had a problem with bathtub facet ( standard Moen). Hot water would not turn on. The facet was slipping and would not engage. All they did was an evaluation off the problem.

+ -1 moreThe house was getting hotter and hotter. The AC was not working. I called Service Experts about 6 PM on Friday. It was wonderful to speak with the young lady on the phone. She said the tech would be out that evening. Rene showed up at 8 PM! He knew what to check on and look for as he determined what the issue was. He replaced the capacitor (having it in stock in his truck) in about 15 minutes. He did not try to sell us a new unit; this one is good to go, he said. But as it is 14 years old, we know we can expect something to break down in the future. At least the capacitor has a 1 year warranty. I will definitely consider this company when I get bids for a new system.
Description of Work: My AC stopped working late Friday afternoon. I called Service Experts, spoke to a real person, and a service tech came out that same evening. He fixed the AC by replacing the capacitor.

I told them I just purchased the faucet too, so it would not take much time at all.The "Christian Brothers" Service man took out his book and said it would be $280.00, if I did not purchase a "yearly contract". If I did purchase the yearly contract it would be about $30.00 less. So they come out to sell you a yearly contract so that they can come again and bill you more when they come out again.The service guy did not even try to give me a better price since he was here. I even called their office and no one care a hoot.I am now getting it install for $35.00 from a connection I have and a good Handyman.Bye-bye Christian Brothers - NOT.Not Christian-like nor brotherly. I called Angie's List Office, but there is not much they can do.No one seems to have a clear understanding of what "service call" means. I think it means you will perform a service of some type.Service as in "work".
Description of Work: Rip-off big time. The coupon states a "service call" but that only means that they knock on your door. I needed a new faucet installed and purchase the item. It could take all of 20 minutes.

Description of Work: The tech waited for an hour at no additional charge for ice to thaw before checking coolant level. He said it was low and added coolant. He than verifyed that ac was cooling house before collecting payment and leaving. Unfortunately, after a couple days we realized that compressor never shut off. Called the tech back, and he found burnt switch preventing compressor from shuting off. No service call or diagnostic fees for second visit.

+ -1 moreThe Update--i received a call from Joel S. at Christian Brothers A/C and Plumbing inquiring about my experience with their Angie's Big Deal I wrote about on July 2nd. Joel was very low key in his approach to me. I explained to him how the wording in the Big Deal had raised my expectations that were not fulfilled by their service call. He agreed, stating that my experience was not the way Christian Brothers like to do business and, since the problem had not yet been corrected, asked me if I would be willing to allow them back to replace the cartridge at no cost. That's a pretty good offer, one where I'd be stupid not to accept. We scheduled a return visit, their technician Randy came by and repaired my faucet in short order and I'm as happy as can be. I give them high marks for offering the rework and wouldn't hesitate to use them in the future.
Description of Work: I have a Moen fixture that leaks and needs a cartridge replaced, a 10 minute job, so I bought into the Angie's List Big Deal that included one "industry standard service call." The technician arrived on time, I explained to him what needed to be done and I showed him the replacement part that needed to be installed. Long story short--he informed me the cost to change the cartridge would be $199 minus the $29. I thanked him for coming by and he went on his way. For the purchase of the Big Deal I received no value. I'm sure this company is reputable and legitimate but I will never call Christian Brothers AC and Plumbing in the future and I am reconsidering my membership in Angie's List for the way the Big Deal was worded.

+ 1 moreI am managing a rental property in Hutto, but am located in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. Being so far away, not knowing any service companies in the area, and not having any referrals, I was concerned about getting service for a reasonable price over the weekend. Rather than searching the internet, I signed up for Angie's List and started my research there. After calling a few places, learning about their availability and cost structure, I went with Christian Brothers. Their base service charge was $69 and they were able to go out that day - a Saturday. I gave them the tenant's number to schedule a time and asked that they call me for payment. They did just that. They called the tenant, assessed the AC, cleaned out the drain line (unblocked it), and called me for payment. It was only the $69. I followed up with the tenant two days later and the AC was still cooling properly. I am happy that I was not nickeled and dimed and that I now have a company I can go to in the future.
Description of Work: Inspected the AC unit to determine why the air coming out wasn't cooling. Cleaned out the drainage line.

+ -1 moreWe called because there was a leak in the ceiling and it was not coming from plumbing, but from AC pipes of some sort. The guy showed up and said that because the leak was in the ceiling he couldn't help. There was a small hole in the ceiling we had cut to look at the problem. He said it wasn't big enough for him to see and that he couldn't cut it himself. He went on to say that his job is really to only look at the AC unit and that he needed to finish the rest of his jobs for the day. Before he got away, we cut a bigger hole and asked him to take a look and at least tell us if the problem was related to the AC. He confirmed that it was AC lines and said that the insulation was gone and that if we just put some more insulation it would fix the problem. He offered to put the insulation on the pipes since it was such an easy fix. Well, the next day the leak continued. Now it is building up in the insulation before leaking. Thanks for nothing.
Description of Work: Reluctantly attempted to determine the cause of a ceiling leak caused by AC lines. Replaced insulation around AC lines in ceiling, which did not fix the leak.

+ -1 moreThe central A/C in our home went out on a Sunday afternoon. We contacted Service Experts and they sent someone to look at it Sunday evening. After looking at our 20+ year old unit, they provided an estimate to repair the old unit and an estimate for a new unit. Based on the age of our old unit and the cost to repair it, we decided to purchase a new unit. We were provided with multiple options for the replacement. We were pleasantly surprised there were good options at a reasonable price and there was no high pressure sales tactics used to have us choose an expensive option. The installation crew arrived promptly as scheduled at noon on the following Wednesday and did an excellent job of installing the unit. We are so thankful for dealing with a professional business that provided us with excellent service and a quality product. We would definitely recommend Service Experts to others.

+ 1 moreThis is an excellent company. We just purchased our first home and had the entire HVAC system upgraded. We were very interested in energy efficiently. We worked with Joe Trvino, Sale Representative. Joe used to install HVACs, so he is very knowledgeable and was also very professional. Based on our plans, Joe helped us pick the perfect system, a Lennox product with a $1,000 rebate. The installation went smoothly, even though the entire system was moved from a ground floor closet to the attic. Once they completed the installation, they upgraded our attic insulation as well. The Lennox HVAC is perfect for our house and the touch-screen thermostat is amazing. The company and workmanship was excellent

Description of Work: Strand Brothers LLC put in a new air conditioning and heating unit in my home. They went through the whole house and put in some programs. They did some work on the doors and ducts. I got a rebate from the city for energy conservation. They spent several days here doing all that work.

+ -1 moreI honestly dreaded going into this entire process of sourcing advice, proposals, install and final delivery.... yet Christian Brothers stood head and shoulders above any other provider I talked to. It's never a fun thing to fully replace an HVAC system yet I was so fortunate to have some really stellar people from Christian Brothers to both help me and make me feel like I made the best decision possible. I utilized Angie's List and other reviews to sort out who I initially called to start this process.... the reviews I read offered a real comfort zone in including Christian Brothers in this process.... so glad I did and even more glad and thankful that I had the opportunity to have Christian Brothers, Joe, Steven and Bryan involved from start to finish....Phenomenal job and I highly recommend them.
Description of Work: Had 4 AC companies come out to give me consult and proposal on replacing 12 year old AC system that had gone out. Without doubt, Christian Brothers and 3 specific individuals exceeded my total expectations in all areas. First, Joe Pendergraft, Project Manager came out and did absolutely great job in fully analyzing old units (2), home and recommending best new more efficient HVAC system going forward. Can't overstate this....Joe did a phenomenal job in all aspects of this most important phase of project, since I know little about all the intricacies of an entire HVAC system....believe his engineering background really separates him from other people that came and basically made a "bid". I made the decision to go with Christian Brothers solely on Joe and his professionalism. I do also understand that any new unit and its price are only one portion of entire decision and outcome. Once again, Christian Brothers and specifically Joe and his install team.....Steven and Bryan really stepped to the plate and exceeded my expectations on total install and followup. With the old unit totally out, install was scheduled for 2 days after I made decision to go with CB. Anyone that has ever replaced an entire HVAC system knows both how important this phase is and how really difficult it can be....especially working in an attic in heat of Texas summer. Steven and Bryan were absolutely great on the complete install....these guys both know their stuff and are unbelievable workers. They were so professional, went overboard in keeping entire house clean as they worked and explaining things as entire install progressed. This install took them a full 13 hour day to fully complete....yet they barely ever stopped or took breaks!! Phenomenal is all I can say. They both also answered many questions I had during complete install. Joe also made 2 visits during the install day and both discussed all the details with Steven and Bryan plus found a few minor things that would further improve both my new system and second system that was still working. Christian Brothers Company gets the credit with this entire process yet in my mind, it was Joe, Steven and Bryan that deserve 100% of the credit and my thanks.
