I had purchased what they called a bam. It is their yearly furnace and air conditioning checkup and a once a year plumbing checkup for $126. They did exactly what they said but the only problem I had was a big problem. They are extremely expensive. The charge for the work yesterday was $450 which included a 15 percent discount and a $10 off coupon. It does also have a 2 year warranty. I went ahead with him because he said if they had to come back, it would be a $49 service fee on top of it. It was just outrageously. We discussed it and I agreed to it but I wasn't happy. It was originally $542. I'm not going to use them in the future because they are too expensive. I love them but I can't afford them.
Description of Work: They replaced a shutoff valve at the water heater and replaced a fill valve and flapper in the hall bathroom commode.

We have positive things about them. They're fair, courteous and professional. We were happy with them but they use duct tape. They are not the cheapest but you get what you paid for. Their level of professionalism and their availability are their clicks so that's why I would recommend them.

This was the third plumbing company that was called regarding a leaky hot water heater. One company didn't do the work because they claimed HVAC flex ducting needed to be moved before the work could continue; and they won't do the duct work. Abacus had both plumbing and HVAC so I gave them a shot at the job. The first thing was they declared the present hot water heater was too tall and it's replacement wouldn't pass code (limited installation space, roof line too close). A 'short' water heater wouldn't fit up into my 20" wide pull down ladder. After considering other places to install the hot water heater, about the only viable option left was a tankless. To install the tankless required a different location for the vent (it's a gas heater) which meant some roofing. Needed to install a new gas line as the existing one was 1/2" and the tankless requires 3/4"; plus they still needed to remove the old heater. I will also (in the near future) need to install an outlet because the electronics for the tankless uses electricity. It is 11:45 AM as I write this. I accepted that it was the only and VERY expensive way to replace the hot water heater (and we looked at installing it in other places in the house) but the work hasn't yet started. I'm not unhappy, it's just taking an exceptionally long period of time to get everything lined up. Two other plumbing companies said they would do the work and then didn't. Abacus is doing the work and found many issues that might have had it not pass inspection and/or be a fire hazard to the house. I'll be happy when this ordeal is over. Update - did not choose to go with this provider due to the cost. Very good firm, but the alternative that they gave me was just too expensive.

The service man called before he arrived to let us know he would be a little early. He was very polite and professional. The leak was very difficult to find as it was underneath our A/C unit. He searched and searched until he located exactly where it was. He was very neat and left the work area clean and orderly. He had to leave to get a part, and returned quickly. We were very pleased with the service we received.

I called and they had someone here within a couple of hours. They explained the issue was due to a clogged drainage pipe for the a/c. I was given 2 price quotes. One to just quickly unclog the pipe and the other to unclog the pipe and install a backup plan if it were to get clogged again which would send it to the overflow pan on the a/c unit. He was quick and afficient and answered any question I had.

I had a water softener installed by another company, they charge $500 to set it up, connect water line, program, tune, etc. They had a problem connecting water line so only charged me $150 and asked that I get a plumber to connect water line. Called Abacus, told them what I wanted, the guy showed up and looked at the Water Softener (which as brand new) and Water meter (located on same side of house as unit) then provided an estimate of $8000!!!!. He also tried to sell me a new water softener???? He charged me $50 for this amazing service. I called them based on commercials from Tynan and others but will never call them again.

See above. I ended up using another plumbing company to replace my water heater. The other plumber did not charge $4500! His cost was half of Abacus and they installed a RUUD water heater which is what I had originally (lasted 23 years!). The other plumber did not have to add a larger vent, so I didn't have to call my roofer back to add the larger roof vent and repair shingles. Also, the other plumber replaced the old attachments and installed the water sensor into the drip pan. I am extremely happy with the work and was very impressed by the professionalism and courtesy of the other plumbing service.
Description of Work: I asked for an estimate to replace my water heater. The total cost was approximately $4500!!! That was to add a water sensor in case the water heater leaked into the pan, having to widen my vent, upgrade some of the connectors and us an American Standard water heater, which, I hear is not very good. On top of the high estimate the plumber who came out was over 4 hours late and he was also rude and appeared to increase the price because he seemed to be irritated. I have used Abacus before. I give them a mixed review. Some of the service people who have come out were okay, nothing great about Abacus. I may use them again if the last guy does NOT come back.

Thank you for letting us know that we did not meet your expatiations. First let me say that we always want to hear from our customers, even if it is 6 months (Nov-11-2013) after the service call was performed. I only wish you had taken time before today and called us to compare your other quote and our quote. We feel we are inline with what the cost of a water heater needs to cost including installation. We are not your average plumbing company; we are a FULL SERVICE Turn-key company. We take full responsibility in making sure that our customer has "Total peace of mind" by allowing us to do all of the steps needed from start to finish making the entire job go smoothly, from water heater removal to water disposal to water heater permit to everything in between. Because of your interest in making us better we have taken the time to pull your invoice and checked to make sure that what we offered and what would have been done were priced correctly for the work offered. Your quote was not a normal 6 year water heater nor was the installation going to be standard. There was a tremendous amount of work that needed to be done to bring your heater up to current state plumbing code requirements. PLUS a Mandatory city permit and inspection. So after reviewing the invoice and the Tech's observation I feel that the price was very accurate. Thank you. P.S. our prices don't change because of location, your income the time of day, the size of your car or if the tech is "irritated" We us Flat Rate pricing. This guarantees you that you and your neighbor pay the say price for the same job. Thank you again, Plumbing Manager Abacus Plumbing &Air Conditioning

After I picked myself up off the ground, I stated that this was highway robbery and they were obviously trying to take advantage of the situation. He called his manager and they lowered the price to $485 - still a crazy amount of money to fix a nick in the pipe that now was an 8' section missing. I do NOT proceed with this service, paid $49.95 for the service call and will go with another provider. DO NOT USE ABACUS - They are out to RIP YOU OFF !
Description of Work: Plumber can out to examine and provide an estimate to repair a cut in a natural gas poly pipe. Chris I believe was his name cut a section approx 8" long out of the pipe and then told me the cost to repair with my "Angie's List Discount" would be $680 !

Thank you for your recent feedback. I am sorry that you feel our prices are too high. We pride ourselves on providing the best service by giving all of our customers the same price for the same job. it is called flat rate pricing. No matter how long or what has to be done...it is still the same price. We understand that you may not have been prepared for this unexpected damage to your gas line. The fact is that there are a lot of things that must be done to make sure that you and your neighbors are safe especially with Gas.We don't expect you to be a licensed plumber and understand what is needed to make a repair to a gas line that is Nicked, but the fact is that a "nick" can not be repaired. You MUST cut out the pipe and install repair couplings to both ends and you have to do this at a certain length. (your statement was 8 feet-the true cut was 8 inches long.) This is why you hire a licensed plumber to do this type of work. Did you know that a permit is required when making a repair of this type? I also understand from the manager that spoke to our tech. We did reduce the price to make the repair and it too was declined. I feel we did everything correct and wish that we could have resolved your problem. They did well. I thought they were expensive but I have no idea. I had done it before so I had no idea how much it is going to cost. I have nothing to relate to. I had replaced it 8 years ago. He was clean and neat and came quickly, I had no hazel. I actually had him price out a new toilet and he told me why I cannot have what I want, it was the lack of having enough water flow. They were all the kind of things that I had read in Angies List. I had looked up a whole bunch of reviews before I took them.

I had a new air conditioning/heating unit, new ductwork, and attic insulation installed by ABACUS in April 2013 (>$16,000). I was instructed at the time of installation that the media filter on the AC/heating unit would need to be replaced every six months. I became a BAM member with the understanding that I could schedule semi-annual inspections where I could have my filter changed out as required and to make sure that there were no issues with the unit. I had an inspection performed in Nov 2013 and had the filter replaced. I was very pleased with the thoroughness of the inspection and happy overall with the service performed. I renewed my BAM membership this year with that same understanding. I called several weeks ago to schedule an appointment for my Spring 2014 inspection. When the technician arrived today he indicated that my filter was dirty and needed to be replaced but that he didn?t have any of my filters on his truck. I asked him why he didn?t since it was my understanding that changing out the filter was part of the semi-annual inspection. He then told me that he had been assigned a new truck and that it had not been properly stocked. He then said that I could probably wait until the end of May to replace the filter and that I could call someone to come out then (for a service fee?). When I told him that the main reason I had scheduled this inspection was so that the filter could be changed, he said that he would go and get a filter for me. About an hour later he returned with the filter and installed it. THEN, he told me that the price of the filter would be $252. I told him that I?d paid half that amount for a filter when I?d had my inspection in Nov 2013. He said, ?Oh, that?s right, you?re a BAM member.? He then agreed to charge me the same price that I?d paid in 2013 but THEN said there would be a $60 trip fee for his travel time going to get the filter. I told him that there was no way I was going to pay a trip fee since I was not previously told there would be a charge for his going to get a filter. He then hadme speak to his supervisor who told me that the trucks couldn?t be stocked with every filter that they might need due to space limitations. I told him that since my unit was installed by ABACUS and that I?d been a continuous BAM member that they should have been well aware of the type of unit they would be servicing and should have had the filter available on the truck. In the end, I was only charged the 2013 price for the filter, but today?s experience left me feeling very disappointed, and I no longer have the feeling of trust I once had with ABACUS.i

Our manager talked with client about the issue with her filter replacement. We have properly annotated client file now with filter sizes and expectations that filters must be on truck and replaced during inspections. New technician received further training of our pricing schedule and discounts provided to BAM customers. We apologized for the less than 'Abacus way' visit. As a result of client bringing the issue to our attention, Abacus is stretching the new employee on-boarding training time an additional day. Laurie Johnson General Manager

He came out and supposedly inspected my air conditioners for functionality and condition. In order for the inspection to be completed the technician has to open up the air conditioner access panels to check the indoor coils. The panels are sealed with tape and mastic along the seams. The guy either never went into the systems to check them or never resealed the joints with mastic. Either way he did not do the work as paid for. He did take the time to up sell me components for the systems. He pushed water sensor shut off switches for each unit $195.00 each and booster pumps for each outside unit at $300 per unit. Because I doubt he even did the check-up as required I now wonder if any of the parts were needed at all. It seems that I paid him $99.00 to come in and sell me parts that may or may not have been necessary. Bottom line will never use Abacus again. Update 05/05/2014: Was contacted by the provider and I sent pictures of the problem. He told me I would be contacted once they reviewed the pictures and talked to the technician. It is now 2 weeks later and still have not heard anything from the provider. I guess everything I said in the review is true. Update 06/20/2014 its been 2.5 months since Abacus came out and ripped me off. The manager called ne about 2 months ago and still haven't got a return call from him as promised. He was supposed to look at the pictures I sent him and then talk to the technician. That was 2 months ago so I have to assume I was right and they have no desire to call me back. I just got a note from them in the mail saying I'm due for my BAM semi annual checkup. This service is the vehicle they use to get in the house and push parts the system doesn't need. Had to call another company to fix the Air Conditioner they never checked as they were paid to do. The BAM service costs $99 a year and is a complete scam. Stay away from Abacus they are the worst. Update 07/01/2014 still haven't heard from Abacus since the first time. They here in their response to intial post that they would speak with their technician and get back with me. Well guess what still have not heard anything.
Description of Work: He came out to do a spring tune up on my air conditioners after I pre-paid $99.00 on their BAM program. This program is supposed to consist of an 11 point inspection of your air conditioner in the spring and heater in the fall.

We are glad to hear everything went well, and that our tech followed the "Abacus Way" guidelines of making sure you understood everything that was going to be done and what the flat rate price would be for the job so there were no surprises. And he offered recommendations to help make sure you can prevent and or avoid this from occurring in the future.
