They charged my son a lot of money. I could have done better if I had used the people that I used before. They decided that they could not warranty anything. It was a cheap air conditioner. It is still running but, I did not like their attitude.

They did a good job. The guy cleaned up. Everything was fine. There were no problems. It has been good. We tried a couple of places and they could not do it on time. Abacus came in and did it. I think there was a $50 difference in price. The quality of service was good. They were pretty quick; they came out and did it. They did give a time. It was about half-an-hour or something like that and it was good. The guy was good. We would probably use them again.

Abacus was SO expensive. I was quoted $6000 for work that was needed (replacing toilet which was plugged), replacing kitchen faucet etc... I had another company come by to give me a quote and they ended up completing all the work for approximately $1,000. The toilet did not need to be replaced, but taken apart to retrieve the object that was blocking it. The kitchen faucet did not need to be replaced, but a small part replaced. Abacus is very professional and competent (I used them in another house I own), however they are very pricey.

I felt the technician kept finding reasons to continually increase the charges. To unstop a pipe it was going to be over $500, to install a garbage disposal it would be over $800. I paid the service fee and declined using them. In conclusion this company does excellent work. This has always been the case since recently. I was disappointed in the high pricing. I was willing to pay more money in the past because of the quality, this time it was outrageous. This company was the best, but they have priced themselves so high they have taken themselves out of the competition as far as I am concerned. The price given was what I paid for the service fee.
Description of Work: I have had them install an air conditioning unit, replace a hot water unit, and dealt with multiple plumbing clogs. I called them again for them to give me a quote on a plumbing clog and a garbage disposal.

Our customer service has documented multiple call attempts to confirm someone would be home and that technician was on the way. No one answered or returned voice mail, so we had to dispatch to next customer in line. When customer called in at 3pm, we offered next available or after hours, but customer refused.

Called to unclog a drain that the A/C condensate line drained into. I called specifically for a plumber and they sent an A/C tech. He stated that they do that when you mention A/C even though I specifically stated plumber. He called in for a plumber who showed up later in the evening without any proper equipment. He came out the next morning and tried to up sell me a "membership" plan before he did any work. After I loaned him my flashlight, he proceeded to snake the line. He said that he couldn't clear the clog and suggested rerouting the condensate line, at no additional cost. We are talking a pvc elbow and about 8 feet of 3/4 inch pvc. After I told him to continue to try to snake the line, he admitted that he thought rerouting was the best bet. When I agreed, he informed me that the company would charge $1150 to do the job. Remember, we're talking maybe $10 worth of pvc. When I got through laughing, I paid for the service call. Subsequently called Plumbco, who was prompt and snaked the line clear in about 15 minutes for $185. Scratching Abacus off my list of plumbers.

I had a list of 6 honey do's such as minor leaks in sinks & toilets, etc. & installation of a faucet I purchased, etc. Ended up I could only install a faucet, due to the high estimate of each job. It still was over $400 to install my faucet I purchased elsewhere and only took a short time to install. While the serviceman was courteous, the prices are exorbitant.

My home had to have foundation piers adjusted inside and outside requiring a complete move out and floor removal on May 23, 2014. The foundation company sent a plumber a few days after the lift to do a hydrostatic test at the clean-out site and confirmed a plumbing leak. I called Abacus Plumbing after finding them on Angie's list and set the appointment. The sales representative arrived at my home and I presented the details of my situation and frustration that we had previously gone through this process two years earlier and a plumbing leak had been detected after that lift and the repair was performed thru the bathroom floor reaching under the foundation. I provided the paperwork for that repair which included the cost. The representative was very accommodating stating they could have someone out the next day. I met the same representative and his partner at my home the next day and they performed the hydrostatic test that confirmed another leak. Moved on to the camera/isolation test in which they discovered it was the same problem that had been repaired previously but continued on until they were able to clock and charge me for 2 hours of "isolation" time. During the testing the two gentlemen were outside my home and I happened upon their conversation with one man facing me and the other had his back towards me and when I was discovered the man motioned his partner to stop talking. It was rather apparent they did not want me to hear them. That visit cost me $965.00 then they presented me with a written quote for work to be performed to the tune of $32,783 but if I joined the "club" for $126.00 it would be discounted to $27,866. The quote did not solve my immediate plumbing problem they were trying to sell me a complete re-plumbing to include two more piers!! I was also given a courtesy call to inform me that there was financing available. After researching and two other estimates my problem was resolved by a licensed plumbing and engineering company for $3200.00. Abacus proposed a solution that included foundation piers which seemed troubling since I just had my foundation leveled!!

Response from Abacus Plumbing, Air Conditioning and Electrical
First, we have attempted multiple times to reach this customer for follow-up and assessment of what work they had completed by the other company, as we have many concerns about what work was done for what seems would not be a proper solution based on the customers preexisting problems with the foundation. Abacus always takes customer concerns very seriously as customer care is a priority. You can see this reflected in our very high number of A ratings and awards and rating at the BBB in Houston. After reviewing this feedback/review, we spoke with both plumbers involved and are confident in our assessment and recommendations. The two plumbers involved are super experienced and have a combined 70 plus years of plumbing experience. They took the details of the job and used the factors to determine the costs of our repair, which must be able to stand the test of time and live up to our warranty. It was determined after our plumbers ran the camera from the roof and after the commode was pulled and reset, that there was what we believed to be a “no-hub” that had come loose. (A “no-hub” is a fitting with a metal outside sleeve and an inside rubber boot that is used to join to pipes together). We believe the other company repaired the pipe as a patch and do not think it is fair to compare the two different approaches. We also included piers in our proposal because we knew the home had foundation issues and the last thing we want it to add to the home owners’ problems. In any job where we suspect the slab has been compromised we always recommend piers, which are recommended and not required, but based on our plumbing experience and the homes foundation issues, a “patch” is cost effective, but we did not feel comfortable recommending the “cheap fix.” Again, we have attempted to contact the home owner to learn details of the repair that was performed and do hope that the repair they did is sound and will not lead to more problems, Also, the conversation between the two plumbers referenced in the review was not related to the job or this customer. They do regret that they may have caused the customer to feel distrust in them.

First, the coils in the attic were frozen, so he came back several hours later. As soon as he arrived, he ran diagnostics in the attic and on the condenser outside. He told me there was some insulation that was very old and falling apart that needed to be replaced. There was condensation forming and that is what was dripping on my bathroom ceiling. Also, told me there was a leak in the condenser coil outside. He had to check whether the condenser was still under warranty. He sent me an email the next day letting me know it was covered for parts, but not labor. He gave me a price of $2105 to perform the repairs. I told him I was going to contact the company that originally installed the unit, which I did, and they came out the next day. They inspected the unit in the attic, and then the outside condenser. They told me the condenser was not put back together. They did that and ran their tests and did not find a leak. Bottom line: the filters were dirty and were restricting the air flow. Once the filters were removed, the air conditioning began blowing cold air, and it is working fine. They came out the following work day to clean out the drain pipe and replace the insulation. I really was disappointed with Abacus. I was hoping that I had found a good A/C and plumbing company that I could count on.
Description of Work: Paid for service call. My air conditioner was not working properly (sometimes cool air, but mostly warm) and there was evidence of water seeping in the bathroom ceiling. Technician ran diagnostics on my air conditioner system.

The plumber was very nice and seemed to know exactly what he was doing.. He was quick and clean. I just thought the price was way out of line. The work took maybe 20 minutes. When I talked to him about the price, I thought maybe they charged more because it was a Sunday, but he said that was the standard price. I think the part cost less than $10.00 at C&D.

I had used Abacus before so called them for an estimate for replacing my 14 year old electric water heater. They provided an estimate of $2200, including removing the old unit, installing a new unit, adding a pan, new valves and flex hoses, adding an electrical disconnect to the wall, (all of which they said were required to bring my setup to code) and pulling the inspection permit. They also recommended installing a "Floodstop" water emergency shutoff, which would require some additional electric work since my closet did not have an electric outlet already (this for an additional $700 or so). They did offer a discount if I were to sign up for their BAM service club, and when I didn't accept their quote came back a little late with a $350 reduction to their offer. This was all more than I expected, so I sought out a bid from another company, which came in at $1100 for removing the old, installing a new water heater and pan, and permit - and none of the other items. This company said I didn't need to bring everything up 100% to code being an existing structure. After getting these two different opinions, I called the City of Houston plumbing inspection group and was told that indeed, on an existing structure that was not set up to current code, if I were just changing out the water heater I only needed to add a pan because I didn't already have one, and make sure the connections were correct. So I did not go with Abacus for this job, as they perceived this job as much bigger than necessary. In the end I went with a third company which had a special offer that met my needs and got my water heater replaced, and which passed inspection, for under $900. I know Abacus is a capable firm, and would probably use them again for smaller jobs, but am glad I did my research on this one. Their price might be fair for the work involved, but I did not require the work they recommended.

Response from Abacus Plumbing, Air Conditioning and Electrical
Thank you for your feedback. We understand how important it is to get the best valve when dealing with such a large situation. Our technician did recommend the above items as a need, because frankly they are a part of what the State requires of a new home in Houston. Your home is not protected from being damaged or flooding just because your home is not new. In fact your home is at a higher risk as your home has wear and tear and age going against it. The recommendations were to “prevent” flooding by shutting off the water to the water heater if something were to go wrong and the new valves and flex supply lines were recommended because they were old and should be replaced during a water heater replacement. Why wait till they start leaking on your new water heater to have them replaced. They are most likely 14 years old as is the water heater as you stated. The electrical disconnect is a very important part of a water heater in case of emergency. A quick disconnect is your safest way to shut power down to an electric water heater in case of a water leak. NO risk of electrocution. Plus you still have electricity to the remaining house. Our club members receive a 15% discount over our regular price and get double warranties on repairs and full 6, 9, and 12 year warranties on water heaters sold and installed by us. PLUS they get a full house Plumbing inspection and yearly water heater flush (a $400 value) all for $126 per year. THEN we send them back the $126 in service coupons. So it’s like getting the membership for free. I am happy to hear that you were able to find a company that met your needs. We pride ourselves on being the best and doing the job 100% complete each and every time, and that is why we give options. Thank you for saying you would use us again. We look forward to being of service to you again in the future. Ron Bevins Plumbing Operations Manager Abacus Plumbing and A/C Company

I called the owner and told him to take off the parts they repaired that weren't relevant to the water leak and he said he didn't have time to waste and charged me the labor costs of putting on useless parts. long story short, they are not useful for water heaters.
Description of Work: The provider did routine maintenance on a broken water heater instead of fixing the water heater. Then offered to sell me a new water heater that didn't fit my vent pipe. An earlier job of installing an outdoor shower, two new hose spigots, new sink connections and a drain were not done to a standard that would be acceptable by inspection nor a home owner as we hope to sell our property in the near future. Abacus had performed another job on another property which was done to a high standard, also correcting previous poor workmanship. Tommy visited the property and did a full assessment, patiently walking me through the entire job step by step. He required 50% payment up front and promised to return on an agreed date. On the agreed date, I had other work being done to my home which made access through the front door challenging with scaffolding and other construction materials partially blocking the entrance. Tommy requested that he reschedule as he was concerned over his safety and that of the other construction crew. I was a bit frustrated that we didn't start that day as I had already arranged other contractors to follow Tommy once he was completed, but I accepted his reasoning and respected his concern over safety. We agreed a new date to do the work and he arrived very promptly on that new date to begin. He carefully selected all the tools and materials necessary and carried them up three flights of stairs over several times. He worked diligently and answered any questions I raised in the corse of his work without complaint. He stopped only for lunch and completed the job by mid afternoon. He returned all his tools and carefully retrieved any construction debris ensuring that he wore shoe slip overs to protect our floors from his work boots. He was obviously very meticulous, demonstrated a very high regard for his profession and quality and earned my respect in the course of his work. He was only gone a few minutes before Abacus phoned me to ensure I was fully satisfied. Cost is always an issue when hiring someone for plumbing, but in this case I was left with a fully satisfied view of the quality of workmanship and attention to details.

We called them for a quote. I was very explosive for the operator who sent the plumber to give a quote but did not sent the carpenter even if I insisted. I was provided a contractor to work for me. I was trying to contact the carpenter for days, but not call back. Finally, I did not hired them. I think there was a miscommunication between the guy who booked the call and the contractor.
