Not well at. I didn't make an appointment with them.
Description of Work: We are getting estimates for a large job of replacing all the water pipes/plumbing in our house. They charge close to $50.00 just to come out and give you an estimate. Ridiculous! There are too many other companies out there willing to give an honest estimate for free, simply because they want your business.

Response from Abacus Plumbing, Air Conditioning and Electrical
Yes we do indeed charge $49.95 to go out and give a professional evaluation. We make no attempt to hide this and while other comapnies say they give free estimates, logic says that any company cannot afford to have their people running around town giving FREE estimates. This client is simply saying she does not like our business model. We did not provide any service so the customer had no chance to experience our award winning service.

The service technician, Randy Wilson, was extremely professional and polite. He was neat, clean, respectful, and told me exactly what to expect. He gaves me prices directly from his price notebook, and showed me the difference in price if I signed up for their annual maintenance agreement. I did take that offer, and as he worked on the original problem I called about, I ended up adding two more projects to his list. I applied for credit through the Abacus office, and after approval, was told that I could sign the paperwork next week when I return to my office. Later that day I received a follow up call from the Abacus office inquiring as to my satisffaction regarding Randy's performance and quality of work. I will use Abacus in the future for all my plumbing issues, as I did sign up for their maintenance program. My house is 25 years old, so I'm sure things will need attention in the future, and I'm comfortable having Abacus as my preferred provider. I recommend this company without reservation.
Description of Work: 1. I had a pin leak in an outside faucet, and also wanted that faucet moved about 5 feet. 2. Bathroom sink stopper was corroded. 3. Another outside faucet needed to be secured and a new faucet head installed.

A friend had used Abacus and they had good ratings here on Angie's list so I gave them a call. They gave me a window for when the technician would come and called about 45 minutes before he arrived. I showed him the issue and he also checked to hallway bathroom. He recommended that I replace the flapper and fill valve on both toilets and gave me upfront pricing. He also explained some things to watch out for in older toilets. After he fixed one, he showed me an issue that I may have in the future. We checked the other toilet before he worked on it and it was doing the same thing. I decided to replace one toilet that is used the most. It turned out to be a very good thing! When he pulled the toilet out, he found that the wax ring was completely gone and only the caulking was keeping water from going all over the floor. He was friendly and professional and was very careful to wear shoe covers whenever he was in the house. He carefully cleaned up everything after he installed the toilet. I will definitely contact Abacus the next time I need plumbing assistance.
Description of Work: I had a master bathroom toilet that was making a foghorn sound when flushed.

What a lack of professionalism. Should not be allowed to appear on Angie's List.

Yes it is true we do charge 49.95 to come to your home to give you an evaluation of your problem. Why? Because even though we believe we have the best Customer Service Specialist in the industry, they are not plumbers and therefore cannot and should not try to evaluate a plumbing problem over the phone. That is why we have plumbers. Now let’s back up a little and also say that the customer was “told” of this charge “before” being booked the call. By doing this, we give our customers the opportunity to decline the service, “before” being booked. We are very up front with all of our services, including our trip charge. Everyone charges, just some try to “hide it” in their work fees. What is so strange about this complaint is that “HE DECLINED THE SERVICE” WE NEVER EVEN WENT OUT TO HIS HOME… I am Sorry that he is upset… But because he is able to leave feedback on Angie’s list he must be a subscriber and therefore I would expect him to also have read our bio where we let everyone know up front that we charge a service fee to come to their home Again I am sorry that this person is upset, but we cannot please everyone.

It was very easy to set-up an appointment and the tech arrived promptly within the agreed window. He was polite and jumped right onto the problem, which turned out to be a very easy one. He was done within 10 minutes and took the time to explain what needs to be done in the future, should it happen again.
Description of Work: It was a simple toilet flush valve fix, took him very little time, but he knew exactly how to do it and didn't try to blame it on a component, but rather, explain that it wasn't installed properly and he showed me how to prevent the same issue in the future.

He was late but he kept me updated on why he was late and when he was coming. He stayed, he talked, he built a rapport with me and I felt safe and secure. He looked at everything and gave me his honest opinion on all kinds of things. He told me about things I didn't really need to have done or I could do myself so that was nice. I needed a new garbage disposal so he put that in and then gave me an estimate. I called them out a week or two later because my toilet failed. They came out and put in a new one. Both of the guys were very professional, they put booties on when he came in, he was calm and professional and explained everything clearly. I couldn't ask for anything better. I think they were a little on the expensive side but I just chose to not look at other companies. I chose a more expensive garbage disposal and it's a dream, you can hardly hear it. The toilet has a lid that does a slow close so it never bangs. I joined their plumbing club. I'll probably have them out to drain and inspect my water heater soon.

Abacus Plumbing sent a very knowledgeable, professional and courteous Technician to our Home. From the moment we opened the door, we felt at ease that we had hired a quality service provider. Before coming in, he respected our Home by wearing coverings over his shoes. He did a thorough inspection of our problem and offered a straightforward solution and price to correct the problem. We would refer Abacus Plumbing to anyone! Thanks for doing such a fantastic job.

I had previously used Abacus and found their work and price satisfactory. This time, I called them because I had a kitchen drain stopped up and I wanted to have it cleaned. The order taker was courteous and they scheduled it the next day. The repairman showed up promptly and was also courteous. The problem is that they used a flat rate manual, apparently devised by them as I am familiar with RS Means Data bases and this doesn't track with them. Their price for cleaning a kitchen drain was $285, plus a $50 trip charge for a total of $335. I grew up in construction, am an engineer, have supervised contracts involving many contractors and subs, and an very familiar with realistic unit pricing. This ain't it. Their manual showed a price for repairing a pipe behind a ceiling or wall for $274. That is a much more complex and time consuming job than cleaning a drain, and that price is more realistic. A price of $335 to unstop a kitchen drain defies all logic. I talked to one of their managers and his only solution was to recall his repairman. At least, he did not try to charge me his trip charge. I offered to pay a hourly rate, but they stick to their flat rate manual.I asked the plumber what he was paid, and he could not tell me. I said about $25 and hour?, and he said, "I wish." I am in business myself and am not opposed to reasonable mark-ups and profits. This price was unreasonable and I have lost all confidence in them.
Description of Work: None. I wanting to have a kitchen drain cleaned, but their price was completely unrealistic.

We had a water main break. We called three companies. One told us sight unseen there would be a minimum $480 to dig up and find what was there. Another came out to look at the situation for free, but then could not give any reasonable estimate, and I just got the feeling it would be a never-ending money pit. Jason with Abacus then came out and explained our options, what challenges we'd face with excavation, and a few ways we could save some money. He gave us firm quotes for two options. I thought they were high, but I also got the sense they were true professionals and would do good work and follow through well. We were not disappointed. They had the water on to the house by the end of the next day, which was our biggest concern. There was a delay getting the city out to inspect, but Jason had prepared us up front for that possibility, so that was OK. When they closed up, they did a great job of replacing the landscape so you could not tell they had been there. All in all, a first class job.
Description of Work: Repaired main water break (turned out to be several) in water line between city meter and entrance to house. Had to excavate about four feet deep and under a brick wall to do the job. They ended up replacing the pipe for the whole run.

They tried 3 times and the drain did not open. After the 3rd time, approx. 20 min. later, the drain opened and ran good. They recommended 2 alternatives and provided estimates. We selected the lesser cost for right now. It's been 2 weeks and the drain is still running OK. Overall We were satisfied with their service, although a little costly when the biomagic was purchased for maintenance. That ran about 60.00/gallon and we got 2 gallons. The man who came out was honest, prompt, kept the area clean and cleaned up when he was done. I'd recommend them to anyone.

Nothing in particular stood out. I had bought the garbage disposal it wasn't theirs but it turned fine. I thought they were a little expensive for just installing the garbage disposal because obviously it was only the labor cost. Recently I hired a plumber who came out and did three hours of labor for a reasonable price.

The estimates were extensive. The first item I was told HAD to be done was replace the anode rod in the newest water heater. This water heater was only 2 years old. I could not get a good explanation as to why this would go out so quickly. In addition we were told about repairs that needed to be made to the second water heater. And we were recommended to get a add ons to keep our water cleaner, etc. I was very suspicious of the first recommendation and with how expensive it all was. I could not believe that we needed a new anode rod. So I had Roto Rooter come out and inspect the water heaters. I did not tell Roto Rooter what Abacus had recommended. They did not recommend a change in the anode rod. When I asked if this was something that did needed to be done, I was told that you would smell rotten eggs if the anode rod had gone out. It could be replaced then. They said it would be very unusual for an anode rod to go out in 2 years. Then we were told that our upstairs water heater was not at all to code. (This water heater was installed during an addition put on our house, not by Abacus, but inspected twice by Abacus.) Somehow, it was allowed to be installed off our bedroom which is against any plumbing code. (It was a permitted install when done, but no one can figure out how it got through). In any case, the Roto Rooter technician caught it right away. He said the company would not replace the water heater where it was currently located. We would have to find another company to do it. They did not want the liability. We worked with the city inspector and had the water heater ended up being relocated to the attic for safety purposes. So, in the end, I feel Abacus was trying to sell us more than was necessary and was not even good enough to realize after two inspections that our water heater was installed in a way that could have put our life in danger. Not good.....
Description of Work: The company had previously installed a water heater (2 years prior). A technician was sent out to do an all over check of our house early 2011. This is a service they offer as a Diamond Club Member. All plumbing in the house was checked including our 2 water heaters. Then we were given an estimate of work that should be performed.

We're giving Abacus a very mixed review. Their people (with one exception) were friendly and professional, seemed helpful, and repeatedly pledged to do whatever it took to make us happy, but we had a problem with fluctuating water temperature that ended in exasperation on both sides. A few months ago, we heard the owner of Abacus on the radio boasting that his company never walks away from a problem: we learned that sometimes this means simply declaring instead that the problem doesn't exist. In April we decided to install a tankless water heater to replace two 11-year-old storage-tank heaters in our attic. We selected Abacus largely on the basis of their good ratings. They recommended the Eternal GU-195, a "hybrid" unit with a small buffer tank to provide more uniform water temperature. The two men that Abacus sent out to do the installation seemed to do a good job -- they made straight pipe runs, and added some attic decking. By the next day, however, we found that the hot water temperature predictably dropped after running for a few minutes, and then cycled about 12 degrees between hot and cold, making our showers (and dog baths) uncomfortable. This was unacceptable for such an expensive purchase, especially when the simple tanks had been so reliable. Abacus returned 6 times over a period of nearly four months, but could not get the heater to perform better. Two visits included lengthy phone calls to the manufacturer's tech support, and one included a factory rep at our house. There was agreement that something was not right, but there was no ready solution. They replaced a mixing valve in the heater that they thought might have been the problem, but to no effect. We agreed to let Abacus exchange the unit for another of the same model, thinking that if it had an elusive defect, it could be diagnosed and fixed in the shop, instead of taking their time and ours on site. But on the day that the Abacus plumber came out to make the exchange, he suddenly was unable to confirm that there was anything wrong, and therefore did not have his manager's approval to exchange heaters, so we were at a stalemate. We asked Abacus to remove the Eternal, and we had Hot Water install a Navien heater, which has worked perfectly after some initial tweaking of the settings. To their credit, the Abacus service manager and the Eternal representative agreed without argument to fully refund our purchase cost. As far as we could tell, either the unit had a defect, or it wasn't installed correctly, or it was misrepresented as something it wasn't. We still do not know which it was, and from this uncertainty cannot recommend either the Eternal heater or Abacus Plumbing.
Description of Work: Abacus installed an Eternal Hybrid water heater and circulating pump. We also purchased their "Diamond Club" membership.

The two plumbers arrived on time, assessed the situation, and made an estimate. The first estimate given is for their Diamond club customers - which I am not. The new estimate was 15% more expensive, but everything was explained up-front. The work was promptly done, and they were gone less than 30 minutes after having arrived. Overall, fast, efficient, courteous, but a bit pricy.
