The roofing crew arrived and got to work on the house. My house is old and it does not have ply-wood under the roofing shingles. I instead have 2x1 wood strips that run across the roof. There are tiny gaps between those 2x1 strips so when the roofers were scrapping the old shingles off my roof; they dropped all the rocky grit through those gaps and all over my garage! The top of my attic insulation is completely covered in that rocky grit still today. I had to clean up the gritty rock dirt that coated everything in my garage (Washer, Dryer, Water Heater, stored items, tools, etc.) the grit was literally everywhere. I mentioned this to Toney, but he just apologized but did nothing about it. I had to clean that up myself. I would sometimes come outside and say hello to the workers, which made all the roofers on my home very uneasy because they were suddenly stop working and just stared at me. It was obvious after just watching them work for a few minutes that this ?Crew? was mostly made up of unskilled day laborers who had no idea of how to replace a roof. They were being told exactly what to do by someone who knew. This was a big problem I think. A week into the job my wife and I were told that they would be finishing up the next day and for us to have their check ready. I wasn?t home, but my wife saw them on the roof the next day still working on finishing up, but she gave them the check because she had to leave. My wife and I were going out that night and wouldn't be back until after dark so she thought it was fine to pay them since they told her they?d be finishing up today. However, they took the check and left the job unfinished! The next day I went outside to check out the roof work in the daylight and I was horrified immediately. There were a lot of nails that were sticking through my roof edges through the flashing. There were nails and aluminum sheet metal all over the ground around my house and their drinking cups were littered on my yard! The corners of the house were unfinished and not even nailed down completely! It was horrible to see how they packed up all their stuff and had left my house in that condition. I immediately called my bank and stopped payment on that check and I called the roofer to tell him that I was NOT going to pay him for this unfinished work. We got into an argument because he was very upset and yelled at me for stopping payment. He told me that this was the kind of thing someone would pull if they planned on not paying him. I told him I had every intention of paying him once the work was completed and that this was the kind of thing a company would pull if they were planning on leaving a job unfinished. He told me he would send Tony back out to my house, but Tony called me and said he would come by about a week later. When he finally showed up I showed him all the bad roof work. Tony was apologetic and embarrassed about the bad work and said that HE would fix the mistakes by himself. Tony mentioned that his boss (owner) John was upset that I had stopped payment, and that?s why he wouldn?t send out an entire crew to fix the job, but I repeated to him that I was upset they'd leave their customer's home looking the way it looked. Tony began the repair work and replaced only one side of the damaged flashing on that day, but then it took him another week to finish just the messed up flashing. He saw how bad the corners were done so he said he would do ?his best? to fix the corners, but the corners still look horrible. My roof is still the WORST job on a roof that I've ever seen. Even my neighbors shake their heads when they see how bad the work Five Star did. I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and explained what happened. Well, Five Star must have a lawyer handy because someone argued against my complaint with a lot of untruthful legal babble. Five Star painted the situation with lies stating that they responded quickly to my concerns, which they were being dishonest about. MY ROOF still looks like crap at the edges and corners. I may have to hire another roofing company to fix their mistakes. I had to pick up nails, litter, sheet metal clippings and a garage full of rocky grit. Please, do yourself a favor and STAY AWAY from this company.
Description of Work: I called Five Star Roofing and had a salesman named Tony come take a look at my roof. The roof was old and it had a leak in my daughter's room. He suggested that instead of trying to patch up the roof over her room, that I get a new roof. He estimated $5,500 and showed me some roofing shingle color options. Tony was very nice and friendly. We talked about how he was coaching little league baseball and other stuff and we signed the contract to get the work done. He mentioned that it was going to be his brother's crew working on my home. So far everything was fine.

Work was to begin in May 5 or 6 and last 4-5 days. Then there was a problem with the materials order. By July they were ready to start but I then ask them to wait until after the 4th of July since that is the busiest week of the year for Downtown Rockport and I did not want the smell of hot tar to effect the shoppers in my store or those nearby. They began work on the Friday following the holiday weekend and were to work through the weekend and be finished by Tuesday. On Sunday, without a word, the workers left around 11 am and took the equipment with them. On Monday it rained and my building flooded because the majority of my roof had been removed then abandoned. No one told me so I was unable to take precautions to save my inventory, furniture, computer equipment and fixtures. When I tried to call 5 Star, I was told they were having to deal with a crisis and hung up on me. I cleaned up as best I could, covered everything with plastic and 3 days later was told that an additional step was necessary to meet windstorm insurance compliance and that work would begin as soon as they got the materials. Again there was a problem getting materials and I was forced to be closed every time it rained. Two weeks later I came in to find every square inch, every blessed thing in the entire art gallery covered with 1/4 - 3 inches of debris. The workers had returned and while removing the old roofing material, walked on my decorative tin ceiling creating open gaps and scraped dirt, tar, insulation and roofing material into the building. Between the flooding inside from the rain and the debris removal I was forced to be closed during our busiest season for 18 days. When the roof was completed but before they had been paid, it rained and streams of water came through the ceiling in the rear of the building where I had not had leaks prior to getting the new roof. Sheetrock walls and ceiling were soaked and there was water over the tops of my shoes covering an area approximately 700 sq. ft. (I guessed about 60-100 gallons of water.) Repairs were made to the roof and John Fleming, owner of 5-Star took $5,000.00 off the final bill. I was not wise to accept that amount because I was not completely aware of the extent of the damage until much later. Five Star was paid on September 16 and since then the back of the building has flooded twice more with a 1/2" stream of water coming down next to a plumbing vent above a suspended sheetrock ceiling. The water ran into the building for days after the rain had stopped. Water had apparently collected under the new roof. The sheetrock buckled and about 25 sq. ft. of ceramic tile has lifted off the floor. Wood furniture is water stained where it sat in 1" of water. I was told someone would do repairs on the roof and interior damage on the Wednesday following the Thanksgiving weekend and no one showed up. I called Mr. Fleming the next day and was told that the repairs had been done (despite the fact no one had been there) and it was not his roof but my walls that were leaking or the water was coming in the foundation ( something that never happened before in the 10 years I've owned the building and I'm uncertain how a foundation leak would leave wet and moldy walls and ceilings.) He came with the employee who had been in charge of the job and said he was going to do a water test. Instead of going up on the roof with a water hose, he stood on my deck and sprayed a high pressure hose at a horizontal crack about 3' from the top of my building. After about 15 minutes of what would be the equivalent of hurricane force wind and horizontal rain, the employee went inside and declared that water was coming in and Mr. Fleming never went up on the roof but declared that he was no longer responsible for any repairs. I found it odd that the employee had had to use a 100 watt light a couple of weeks earlier to even be able to see the stream of water coming in. The area is about 4' between the top of the ceiling and a 10 ft. wide suspended ceiling. It is very dark and the closest you can get to the back wall 10 ft. But now he could see drops of water on walls in the same area without the use of a light at all. They left. I could find no trace of water at all. (It should have been easy since much of the sheetrock had fallen off and exposed the bare concrete block walls and if 30 minutes of rain running down the side of my building caused let in 60+ gallons of water, 15 minutes of direct power spray should have at least left a puddle.) Now it becomes strangely bizarre. Back when the roofers finished in August, they had nearly ruined my back deck with hot tar drips and foot prints. They power washed the deck and replaced the wood on the two sets of steps. About a week after Mr. Fleming performed his "water test", I found brand new drips of tar and footprints all over the deck and both sets of newly replaced wooden steps. Then we got 1.56" of rain. Not one drop of water came in the "water test" area where the interior had previously been flooded and damaged. I believe the employee who was supposed to do the repair on the roof returned, did the work he had told his boss he had done on that Wednesday when no one had shown up and left a whole lot of footprints behind. However, I now have a brand new leak about 30 feet from where other one was. This leak landed on my sound system and several pieces of artwork. I cannot call Mr. Fleming because he no longer accepts responsibility, apparently making my warranty worthless. I will have another roofer and engineer look at the roof, do the necessary repairs and will sue Mr. Fleming for the costs of the roof repairs and the damages to the interior.
Description of Work: The roof on my fine art gallery, a 4000+ sq. ft. commercial building was damaged in a hail and windstorm. I had two drips from the ceiling and three leaks along the side walls in the front half of my building. For windstorm insurance compliance, Five Star replaced a flat roof with a sloped roof. The proposal lists 13 steps they would accomplish to finish the roof. I was to get a cd with pictures of the finished roof. I researched 3 roofers, 5 Star was the most expensive but offered a 10 transferable workmanship warranty. The proposal was signed on May 4, 2012, however they did not begin work until mid-July, it was to take 4-5 days. They declared the job completed on August. 30, 2012. I have not received pictures as promised and have no way of getting up on the roof to see if the work was done as described.

Response from Five Star Roofing Company Inc
In response to the letter we received regarding your member listed above, we are sending you a printed copy of our response to her complaint filed with the BBB along with letters to TWIA for installation methods of roof system and the reason for additional work required due to engineer’s finding to bring roof system up to code. While we regret that this matter has gotten to this point, we must also state that we have been as cooperative with this member of yours as possible to no avail. There have been many attempts on our part to try and resolve her complaints in a professional and timely manner even though those attempts are responded with more complaints. After BBB reviewed out last response, we were sent notice that they determined that we addressed the dispute issues and exhibited a good faith to resolve said issues accordingly. Her last response to their finding was that structural engineers and previous customer of ours had to hire different contractor to finish a commercial job for them. Our company has looked as far back as the year 2000 for that project and have no record of them in our files. Five Star Roofing has never been released from any project that we have been contracted to perform. Even with the customer’s continued complaints and numerous mentioning of getting attorney and filing suit and BBB design to close complaint; we are still attempting to resolve her complaints to no avail.
