Ben came up with a plan that included a boiler to heat our home via in floor radiant heat, and cool the home with an air conditioner/heat pump. We asked for heat while we worked on the house in the winter and we'd address air conditioning in the spring. He installed the air conditioner/heat pump, not the boiler. We trusted him that it was a miscommunication, after all, after he added those heat strips it was able to keep the house at a whopping 48 degrees in the middle of winter. He tried, right? We paid him $13,500. Then the insulation on the ductwork all started falling off, we noticed that there was a duct still unconnected, it was just hanging there. there were sections he'd never insulated at all. He never installed a condensate pump to pump the water out for the summertime when the AC is running. Then we decided to look up the specs on the unit he installed. He did not install a 16 SEER which is what we paid for, he installed a 14 SEER. He said it would be "high end", we had 2 other contractors look it up and confirm that it is builder grade. My husband said to him, "you sold us a mercedes and provided a Kia". We fought for months and months to get him to make it right, replace it, give us some money back, something. He claimed his supplier sent the wrong one but that's a lie, we looked it up and they don't even make a 16 SEER. Regardless he installed it so he's responsible to make sure it's the correct unit. He gave us the run around and around and around. It was like working with a 12 year old getting him to finish the job, tape the insulation back up, haul away the trash he just piled up in our basement for MONTHS. In March we finally gave up trying. He takes weeks to respond to repeated texts and calls. He'll ask for 95% of the money when he's only done 50% of the work. And sadly we were foolish enough to trust him because a really great person recommended him. That person is extremely disappointed in him, I might add. Ben was new to the area and we gave him a chance and he shamelessly cheated us. DO NOT hire him. Oh and someone else tore out what he put in and replaced it with what we wanted and more efficient for $7500. Shop around. Get a contract (even if you ask, hey do we need a contract, and he says, no I trust you, don't trust HIM!). Don't pay until the job is 100% complete and research the unit they are installing.
