Gentleman arrived as scheduled, took the appropriate measurements, etc. He seemed to know his business. BUT he INSISTED on replacing our vent fan with the vent system that runs along the peak of the roof. Since ours is a hip roof with a low slope, we did not want to try a different system, when the current one has worked well for 50 years. His estimate was mid range among the estimates we got, and we decided to go with another dealer who believes that "the customer is always right".
Description of Work: Gave us an estimate for replacing our roof, including a vent fan and gutters.

Our proposal (June 26, 2012) that we provided did not state to use a ridge vent system, but we did recommend a new power vent with thermostat and humidistat - perhaps we have been confused with one of the numerous others dealers he received bids from last year. We would also be more than happy to provide the customer with the original quote that states the contents of the roof replacement, which does not include the system he protests about in his complaint above. At Schultheis Brothers we focus on ensuring that the customer’s concerns are listened to and all their needs are met. We would also like to state that we provide numerous options in our contracts to make sure our customers are aware & well informed on all possible options to ensure the job is done properly & to the customer's satisfaction.

The AC stopped working so we called Schultheis as they had replace our furnace just a couple of year ago. Technician was out within two hours of making the call. We were worried that the unit would have to be replaced as it was the original unit from when the house was built 20 years. It turned out to be a simple repair. Good to know that there are honest people still.

We have never had air conditioning in our 90 year old home because we have a boiler and no duct work. We wanted to install the Mitsubishi wall units to provide cooling throughout the first floor. We had other estimates but chose Shultheis brothers because they had some ideas that the others did not. Installation was scheduled, they showed up on time, were efficient, pleasant and very neat. Job was scheduled to take three days and they finished in two and a half. Units are working beautifully.

From the time of the proposal to the installation all went well. The removal of the old equipment and installation process took 2 days but the installers were prompt and professional at all times. They were neat and kept everything cleaned up as they went along. We have been very pleased with the experience. Lower air conditioning bills have been a very good plus.

Very professional company. The prices were not necessarily the lowest, but it was an emergeny install. Overall, I am very pleased with the quality of the furnace and the quality of the service. I had a minor problem after the install with a vibration -- the company came out immediately and corrected the problem -- no charge.

They were on time and very cautious by making sure no debris was left at all due to the four dogs that occupy my father's home.
Description of Work: Used Schultheis to replace an old shake roof on my father's home with a new standing seam metal roof. They were very professional and did an excellent job. I am very pleased with how professional the process was from start to finish. The receptionist who set up the initial free estimate was extremely courteous and helpful with all my questions. When the salesman came to my home he was well informed and showed me a wide amount of options on his iPad and helped gear me towards finding the best brand for my home. The installation went smoothly and the installers were extremely informative showing me exactly how my new equipment and thermostat work. After the installation was complete I was very surprised to receive a follow up call to ensure that I was satisfied with the process. I am also receiving a bid from their Roofing division and would recommend this company to anyone.

Although I had this service done in 2010 and beyond... I recently joined Angie's List and wanted to make people aware of my experience. After the initial installation, the cables did not function properly. I contacted the company and eventually they "re-checked" the cables and stated that "nothing was wrong". I called a third time after there was ice in the gutters and icicles hanging from the roof when the company threatened to take me to court to pay the remaining balance. I informed them numerous times I would pay as soon as the problem was rectified. I contacted the electrician who helped with the installation. He agreed with me, they weren't working correctly and it must be a problem with the cables as the electrical aspect was fine. He had to send the company a letter indicating that the cables needed to be replaced. After no response and a year later, I contacted the magistrate. We were scheduled for a hearing May 22, 2012. They wanted to settle "out-of court" and after my compilation of a "new" contract I decided to do that as well. On January 3, 2013, I paid the balance and at this point they are functioning properly. I also requested a one year warranty to which they obliged. Overall, I found them very unprofessional and extremely difficult to work with.

We worked very hard to resolve the customer's complaints when the problem was first brought to our attention. Schultheis Brothers first installed the heat cables on November 28, 2010 and allowed the customer to enroll in a payment plan to accommodate her needs, which is not standard company policy. It is unfortunate that the ten different people we sent were not able to diagnose the problem properly, but when the electrician spoke to us on 2/24/2012 he stated that the cables were bad due to them touching the ground fall. The electrician made no indication that the cables did not work due to Schultheis Brothers. We provided the customer with brand new heat cables along the roof edges, gutters, and downspouts at no charge and paid to have the electrician present when the installation occurred to ensure there were no issues. After the new cables were installed the balance was paid in full. We are very sorry that the customer felt we were unprofessional, but we did attempt numerous times to meet the electrician and to correct the issue. We did grant the customer a one year warranty at no cost. Schultheis Brothers was very professional and did their best to correct this matter.

We purchased a new, old home and the boiler had not been turned on for the season. The initial service call was rescheduled so we were without heat in mid October for about a week. The service technician that came out to get the furnace working was really outstanding and spent a lot of time working on the old boiler. After about a week it became obvious that half of the house was not heating. The technician that came out this time was really not helpful, told me it was airlocks and to bleed the radiators. He called the company as he spent little time and thought there would not be a charge. The office told me there would be an additional fee as the first technician spent so much time at the home. So I bleed the radiators for 2 days and ultimately had another company fix the problem which was not due to air locks.

We are very sorry for the inexperience the second technician had when called to their home. A member of our management called and spoke with the customer(s) and offered to correct this matter, but the offer was declined. We are very sorry for the poor experience they had and the offered we made to the customers remains if they should chose to take it.

All work was done quickly and professionally in all the projects listed above. They continue to be our heating and A/C service provider of choice. The only negative thing I can say is that on a couple of occasions there was a little confusion in their office getting us to the correct department. But those were minor inconveniences.
Description of Work: We have use Schultheis Bros. for over 32 years. They performed the original heating system installation. We used them to install our A/C system in 1982. They have serviced the heating and A/C system from then until present. They have also installed a gutter heating system that we deemed necessary after the 2010 two foot snowfall which had caused ice dams to form and melting snow to enter our home. The reason that the cost entered is $0.00 is because we have used this provider for so long, an accounting of the cumulative costs of the collective projects is not practical at this time. Also, the approximate date of the last service is a guess. We would have to dig through piles of receipts to give you an exact date. Besides, the number of times we used their services is too many to count.

We first called Schultheis in early November when our furnace began blowing cold air and producing a lot of water condensation. We were able to get a technician scheduled on the Monday following the weekend when the furnace began to fail. It was producing heat, but very little and was not able to keep the house above 64 degrees. The first Schultheis technician diagnosed the problem with the attached humidifier producing too much moisture. This, in turn had damaged the control board. He showed us the old board and the capacitor on the board that had been damaged by water. He replaced the control board and told us we would need a new humidifier and air cleaner but the work could wait until their slower season starting in the spring. Two weeks later, the furnace was blowing cold air again. Again it began on a weekend and we were able to get Schultheis to send out a technician on Monday. A different technician looked at the system this time and told us the ignitor was malfunctioning, probably also due to the excess condensation that had plagued the system two weeks earlier. He did not have a replacement ignitor for our particular system but said he would see if he could get a universal ignitor to work for us. After about ten minutes of effort, he was able to get the ignitor to work and we had heat again. Two weeks later, we had the same problem. This time when we called Schultheis, we relayed the diagnostic code, told them the brand name and model of our furnace and asked them to make sure whatever technician they send out have a proper replacement ignitor for our furnace. Again, we were able to get an appointment for Monday as the problem began on Saturday. This technician looked over the system, went out to his van and brought in and installed a compatible replacement ignitor. He said that the universal had been installed properly, but had failed due to a manufacturing defect. He did not charge us for the replacement part or for the service call. We appreciated that the technician had showed up with the requested part even though the ignitor may not have been the problem and that Schultheis had given our call a priority. We will definitely call them up this spring when we look to replace the air cleaner and humidifier.

I give then a F rating and I would never tell a dog to use them for anything. They are a well known company and have a good reputation. Adam Schultheis was the one that told me it wasn't under warranty and I don't know if he is the owner or just part of the family. One time they were a little late but they did call me to tell me and that was fine because things happen. they were more or less here when they said they would be. They were here ten times but they showed up on time. It was just shotty business practices. They had to send out three people to inspect the job. Did they not trust the first guy or did they fire him? I just felt I got the run around. I am an easy going person and if you even make an effort to do what your supposed to do then I give you credit for it. I am in customer service too.
Description of Work: I used Schultheis Bros. I have a heat pump and about four years ago I needed a heat pump replaced in my sun room. I called them and I ended up buying the heat pump from them. When they came to install it they sent one person to install it but this fellow couldn't pick it up by himself so he drug it across my deck and ripped up my deck. The box had strapping on it and it got caught on my deck. They put in the heat pump and they said its unfortunate that happened and we will have someone fix your deck for you. It took them six months to get somebody out to fix it. During the next winter they unit quit working and it is like a green house out there. It took them a month to get the part but they did give me space heaters. Then last year it quit working again and they tried to tell me it wasn't under warranty anymore. I was standing there with the contract in my hand that said it wasn't covered for parts but the service was covered for five years. He kept saying no, no, no that is not right and I said yes it is I am standing here with the contract. He said I will have to look at the contract. He called me back a couple of days later and said you are right it is covered. He then gives me an estimate of $400.00 to fix it. For the service part that is not covered. The parts are covered but the service wasn't. I paid like a $1000.00 for the thing and its only like a few years old. I am not going to get a new one, I pay the $400.00 to fix it. They send the fellow out and he tells me it needs a new motor. I said fine order the motor. They call me up like three weeks later to have the fellow come out and he doesn't have any parts. I said where are the parts? He said I have to look at this again. This was a different fellow, he said there is nothing wrong with the motor but it needs a new condenser and it may need a new compressor as well because it was all corroded inside. He writes it all up and he is going to order the parts. A couple of weeks later another fellow comes out again no parts. He checks it again and says it don't need a new motor so I was like ok, I am already getting disgusted. Four weeks later they send the third fellow out again and he does have parts. He hooks up the part and turns on the unit. I leave for a while and come back and I smell something burning. The unit has shut off, blown the breaker and I smell electrical burning. I try to call them but its a holiday weekend and they are not there. After the holiday I call them and they are not calling me back. Finally I get a hold of them and they sent the same fellow out again. He looks at it, messes with it and changed some parts then turned the thing on. The thing starts billowing smoke. To make a long story short they took the unit out and took it back to the shop. They fixed it, brought it back and put it back in then they send me a bill for more them $400.00. I called them back up and said you told me $400.00 but this wasn't covered and that wasn't covered and we had to take it back to the shop. I said this has taken like five months to fix this thing, I have had to take time off work, you quoted me a price and just because you couldn't fix it and had to take back to the shop doesn't mean I should pay more then you quoted me. It is your fault that you couldn't send someone knowledgable to fix it right the first time. I was told I will have the boss call you back. It was a couple of weeks before he called me back and they finally agreed to send me a new invoice for $400.00.

They don't charge me for labor and give me a discount on parts since I have a service contract with them. I've been using them for about 23 years. They always do a great job.

The salesman was very professional and explained things well. They installed a new high-efficiency boiler (a European brand) that was half the size of the old boiler, hangs on the wall, and is about 95% efficient (as opposed to the old boiler that was about 67% efficient). The new air vents (PVC piping) go out the basement wall, rather than through the chimney (which is falling down). The job was not cheap, but we got a substantial energy credit on our federal income taxes and our gas bills were basically cut in half!The workmen were quick and competent. The only (minor) problem was that we had to have them come back and re-angle the exterior PVC piping so it didn't stick out into the driveway.Would I recommend them? Absolutely (and have). Would I use them again? Certainly. Had I known about Angie's List back then I would have done this review much sooner.Oh, and after a year they called *us* in order to schedule a maintenance check....
Description of Work: We needed to replace an ancient gas boiler that was not working well and no longer very efficient. This company was recommended by our next door neighbors (who also passed along the *dis*-recommendation from the people two doors down from us of another company)!

Excellent !! (Please see the complete story above.) Just a P.S. to the above comments .... Schulthies Brothers also was willing to work around my schedule. They were very flexible and worked with me to get all the work done and done right. I couldn't ask for anything more. If, for some odd reason, somebody has had a bad experience with Schutheis Brothers, I'd be willing to bet it was the customer's fault not Schultheis Brothers. Sometimes people just look for reasons to complain.
Description of Work: (An FYI ... I am a very particular consumer. As a customer I expect to be treated the way I take care of my customers .. with "white glove" service. I expect honesty, hard work, & value for my dollar and will not tolerate anything less. So if I'm writing a positive review you can rest assured the vendor I'm writing about went above & beyond my expectations.) In August of 2011 my neighborhood suffered a power surge from a lightning strike. Unfortunately for me I was out of town on business (training for a new job), and did not know this until I had to came home for my Mom's funeral. I flew home at 2:00 AM on a hot August night to discover all the power was out. The next day I discovered the extent of the damage. Among many other things (oven, TV, lamps, etc ...) my furnace & central A/C were blown out. The bad news, was after my Mom's funeral that week, I had to head back out of town to finish my training. I had about a week to get things up and running before I had to leave town again. I called Schultheis Brothers that morning to see if they could send somebody out to get my central A/C up and running before I left town. Schultheis Brothers was AMAZING! I spoke to a gentleman named Adam who I believe is in charge of their service department. He had a tech out that afternoon. The technician was punctual, professional, and very nice. He diagnosed the problem, that the Mother Board in my furnace was blown. This prevented the blower in my furnace (among other things) from working and therefore I had no A/C which was greatly needed in the middle of August. The technician ordered the part while at my home and it was in the next day. The next day after that the technician came out and installed the Mother Board and did some other things and got my central A/C up and running. Think about it .... in this day & age of poor service and shoddy workmanship, Schultheis Bothers had my central A/C (& furnace) up and running in 3 days!! I can't reiterate this enough, they were not only very responsive, punctual, & professional ... BUT they were also very nice to work with. But wait, there's more! ........ When I got home from training and settled back into my normal routine, I decided to get my electronic air cleaner taken out because it was damaged too from the lightning strike. After making my decision to remove the electronic air cleaner and replace it with the traditional filtering system, within a 2 days, Schulthies Brothers was at my house and got the job done, and done right. There is still more .... Most recently, my garbage disposal stopped working. I remembered that the technician mentioned to me that they also do plumbing. After my very positive experience in dealing with them with my furnace, central A/C, & my electronic air cleaner, I called Adam again at Schutheis Brothers. He had a master plumber out to my house within 2 days to install my new garbage disposal. And just like the service techs. for my A/C and furnace, the plumber was punctual, did a great job and was very nice too. I will use Schultheis Brothers from now on for all my heating, A/C and plumbing needs and highly recommend them. They provide excellent old fashioned service that is lacking in today's world.

Vince was quick in checking over the air conditioner and assisting in getting it in the window.
Description of Work: Vince checked our air conditioner to make sure it was in good running condition. He also checked to see that there was enough freon in the unit. He then helped my husband anchor the unit in the window.

They were professional and did a good job of cleaning up the yard after they completed the work. All debris and everything else was hauled away. They cleaned out my gutters while they were at it; this wasn't something I had asked for, which was nice. They did a professional job. They did good, I will use them again in the future.

Everything went very bad. They put all the wrong color of trim on the roof. The drip guard, and flashing was the wrong color. They ruined the aluminum trim on our windows. They didn't finish the job (they didn't put in the gutter guards). They damaged a lot of property by throwing shingles. They drove their vehicles through our bridge and they broke a light and chipped the cement. They threw tarps over our plants and burnt them. The biggest issue is that the roof is not finished. When they brought an expert, the owner and salesman, they agreed that the job was unacceptable. They said they would fix the issues. We went over all the damages and they agreed that they needed to be repaired as well. The sales person assured me that they would fix the issues once the materials were ordered and in. Once I submitted an estimate for the damages, I was told that they will not be repairing anything and the job was finished. I was willing to work with them and I was told that they were turning the matter over to the attorney. The attorney wrote a letter with the wrong contract price and wrong prices on the estimate for damages. The letter also threatened that I had 15 days to pay in full for the job even though they came and agreed that the job needed to be fixed as well as the damages.

The problem was mistakenly thought to be a bad trap on the boiler. Waited a week for the part (was told it would be fixed the next day) and after multiple calls finally repairman came and discovered it was not a bad trap but a rubber seal that had not been replaced correctly when the boiler was serviced for its yearly cleaning. (Schultheis had done the cleaning in late September) We paid for both calls but on further reflection felt that we should not have been charged for a problem that was caused by their service man. We called and spoke with Adam Schultheis and he seemed very nice and promised a call back. Got the call back a few days later and Adam said he had looked into the problem and offered to send the money back or extend our yearly maintainence contract. That was a very upfront thing to do as it would have been easier to simply keep the money! We have used Schutheis for 12 years and will continue to do so.

I called about 6 different HVAC companies on an emergency basis to look at our broken AC while my wife was 8 months pregnant. The guy did come out and he was pretty punctual, but after further research he had switched out a capacitor on my AC unit. It turned out the part he switched out he charged about $140 for it and I later found out the part cost about $10. He definitely gauged me for that and I'm pretty ticked off about it. I had called 7 different service providers and they were the only ones that could come out so that is a plus, but I definitely did appreciate the price gauging.

We were called after 4:30 pm. Our on call service tech ran out to the house after hours with no problem on a friday night at 6:00 pm. He evaluated the problem and fixed it. We have flat rate pricing for evenings and weekends like every other company. We were the only company that could meet his demands. The part that was installed costs alot more than 10 dollars. We did not gouge (which he spelled incorrectly) the genlteman. And his wife was happy, I guess the few extra dollars for an after hours call is not worth her being comfortable.
