Services we offer
Home energy efficiency & comfort evaluations. Home energy audits that include infrared analysis and blower door air infiltration testing. Insulation AND air sealing measures for attics, exterior walls, garage ceilings, basement rim joists, and crawl spaces. The primary insulation that we use is cellulose insulation. We are fans of cellulose insulation because it is incredibly effective, less expensive than spray foam or fiberglass, sustainably sourced from recycled newspaper fibers, and completely non-toxic.
Services we don't offer
We do not do whole home / new construction spray foam insulation.
When first speaking with them, explained my situation. They assured me they could help. When they called to reschedule 2nd time, I asked them if they thought they would be able to take care of issue. Andy told me no. Had he told me that when I initially spoke with him, fine. I changed my schedule for my appointments and he called 1st time 1 hr before appointment. 2nd time, 2 hrs. If you dont want my business, fine...but say so.
Description of Work: Nothing. Scheduled 2 appointments, called to reschedule both times.

Response from Insulwise Energy & Comfort Solutions
We did have some very, very rare scheduling issues with this customer, and I apologized to her for that inconvenience. However, during one of our conversations she informed me that another company had come out, and that they had planned to first perform excavation work in her basement to remove a great deal of dirt. I informed her that if the crawl space beneath her home was that tight, that it was not a job we could undertake (we are not equipped to perform excavation work). It was not until I had this information that I understood we could not perform the work. I apologized that we could not make it out, but I felt she agreed that if we could not do the work, that it didn’t make much sense for us to come out and look at it. Please read below of the dozens of reviews from our happy customers whom we have actually performed work for. Andrew Haak, Owner, Insulwise Energy & Comfort Solutions

Andy the owner of the company worked with me directly to create the solution that fit our needs. He was extremely professional and clearly demonstrated expertise in identifying issues that would provide biggest opportunity for improvement in overall comfort of the home. We had a slight issue on the roof with one of the fan vents but Andy came back personally, the next day, and addressed it. I would recommend andy and team to anyone looking to insulate their home and improve comfort.
Description of Work: Dense pack insulation in garage ceiling. Foam deal all areas of first floor and basement. Cut three air vents for bathroom fans. Sealed attic and dense pack insulation in attic.

I am more than pleased with my experience and the work Insulwise (Andy Haak) performed for my home. I reached out to Andy because of the issues I was having with the comfort level and ice damming that I had been witnessing year after year. Andy was the most proficient contractor I spoke with to explain the why behind the issues I was experiencing, and what solutions were available to solve the problem. I am sure Andy can explain in better detail, but he and his team were able to air seal and insulate my attic space and basement. He also made several other repairs to my HVAC supply and return ducts, exhausitng bathroom fans, and attic opening. They measured the air infiltration for my home before and after repairs by providing a free blower door test, and Insulwise was able to document a 60% reduction in outside air infiltration. In short, ny wife and I immediately noticed a difference in how how our home felt. The hot and cold spots were gone, and our home felt comfortable. I wasn't sure ing the beginning if I would really feel a difference, but it was truly amazing. This money was well spent. Andy and his team at Insulwise are professionals that were courteous and respectful to my family and home. If you feel uncomfortable in your own home, give him a call.
Description of Work: Made my home more comfortable, and more efficient to heat or cool. Air sealed and insulated attic and basement to significantly decrease outside air infiltration.

The work went well, Andy knew what to look for and took care of all my concerns about cold areas and cold walls. He made appropriate suggestions and kept the project on time. Our home is nice and toasty now. I particularly liked the infrared images to identify the cold areas that needed to be treated. We took care of them throughout our house after that. Andy communicated with me well during the project. I would recommend their services and also recommend them coming out to any home and making an energy audit for those that are interested reducing energy bills.
Description of Work: We needed a lot. Our home was built in 1933 and didn't have any insulation in the exterior walls. Andy and Xavier came out and we went through the house. We reviewed infrared images and discussed what was needed. Andy really understands the insulation needs and where the heating issues were over the entire home. After the assessment we had insulation blown into our exterior walls (cellulose dense pack) throughout the house. They also put additional cellulose insulation in the attic, sealed up air leaks, foam sealed top and bottom plates, duct encapsulation. After all the work was done I really noticed an improvement with less heating when boiler wasn't running as much as before. Great!. The process did create some dust when it was blown into the exterior walls so be prepared for that. Was it worth it? Yes, because the house is not as drafty now.

From start to finish, Insulwise was prompt and professional. Xavier came out and spent approximately 90 minutes doing an evaluation of our needs. He shared his findings clearly and provided an immediate estimate. Scheduling the work was not difficult and Andy was very accommodating. The knowledgeable and polite crew arrived on the specified day and got right to work. They spent 2 days in our home and when they left the house was warm and clean!

Andy and his two workers arrived on day one and explained the procedures. They were prompt and began work immediately. They covered all the floors and furniture with tarps. Andy explained that we had rodent droppings around the basement rim joist and that he would dispose of all the insulation as a safety precaution. He told us that they can sometimes put the fiberglass over the spray foam for additional insulation, but it was not necessary. The spray foam was applied all around the rim joist in the basement. Andy and his crew plotted out the garage roof to determine where the holes would be drilled for the cellulose to be blown in. They finished the basement and garage in one day. That night, there was a dramatic difference in the bedroom and bathroom floors over the garage--it was the first time that I could walk on them in my bare feet and not get shocked from the cold. DRAMATIC difference! (our bathroom drain pipes had been freezing when the temperature was below 20) A few days later, the crew arrived and worked in the attic all day. They told us that we will most likely notice the difference in the summertime when our home will feel cooler. Andy and his crew were prompt, courteous, and CLEAN. They cleaned up everything, TWICE. There was residual dust from the cellulose, but it was minor. I am sorry that we did not have this done when we first bought our home. Thanks Andy for making our home so much more comfortable.
Description of Work: Removed old fiberglass insulation around rim joists in basement and applied spray-foam insulation. Insulated garage ceiling with dense pack cellulose insulation. Sprayed around air leaks in attic and added loose cellulose insulation over the existing fiberglass insulation. They built up the access door around the attic access to accommodate the additional insulation.

The first part of their service was a thorough inspection. Next, they provided us with varying degrees of solutions and showed us how each varying level would affect our comfort, home efficiency, and checkbook. We then decided on the best solution for our family. They air-sealed our attic, basement, and crawlspace, The heavily insulated our attic and ceiling to the crawlspace, and then encapsulated our crawl space. In addition, they placed a device in the crawl space that will alert us to potential flooding, before it becomes a serious problem. We also received numerous follow-ups to make sure everything was satisfactory. They even came out to the house for some minor follow-up work, in a timely and very friendly manner.
Description of Work: Insulwise provided extensive air sealing, insulation and crawl space encapsulation. We immediately noticed a marked utility efficiency and increased comfort level inside our home. The team worked hard to meet our timeframe requirement, which I know was challenging.

He was very responsive. The estimate process was very smooth and informative. He looked over the whole house and discussed possible improvements he could make to the insulation, but he kept all the tasks separate and I did not feel pressured to hire him to do more than we wanted. Our situation was a bit complicated since we had to get old asbestos-containing insulation removed before he could do the re-insulation. We had some trouble with the other company, which meant we had to change the expected schedule, but he was very responsive and flexible. The work itself went smoothly, and we have certainly noticed an improvement with the new insulation. In addition to the insulation work, he removed an old bathroom vent that was no longer in use and patched the hole in the ceiling. That work was also well done.

Andy and his crew from Insulwise insulation did a fabulous job! Our old drafty home, was uncomfortably cold in the winter, and our heating rand cooling bills were sky high. The job took about four days to complete since they had to insulate the entire house from top to bottom. Andy came out and spent close to two hours in our home, assessing what was needed, and carefully explaining to us what he was proposing to do and why. He patiently answered all of our questions. From our first meeting it was apparent that Andy was extremely knowledgable about his job, and we felt he was far more thorough than other companies we had considered. His plan for our home was clearly tailored to meet our specific needs, rather than a one size fits all approach that many other insulating companies utilize. The work went on for almost four full days. Andy and his crew showed up on time, were extremely polite and attentive. They took great care to keep our home clean during the process, laying tarps down all over, and vacuuming at the end of every day. Andy was on site the entire time, and he had two to three other workers with him, who were also extremely professional and courteous. We have two small children in our home, and the entire crew was great with our extremely inquisitive four year old son, who kept following them around and asking them questions. They took time to answer his questions and even let him borrow their headlamps, which made his day! After the first day of work, in which the basement and attic were taken care of, we could immediately feel a difference, the house was way less drafty! The project was completed on schedule, and at the end of each day Andy filed us in on what had been done, and what was planned for the next day. Our home was kept as clean as possible the entire time. They even worked around our Great Dane, so that we did not have to make other arrangements for him during the work. After the entire job was completed, we definitely noticed a difference in the comfort of our home! Overall the house is far less drafty. Our bedrooms are also much more comfortable at night, no more extra blankets needed! We are able to keep our thermostat set a few degrees lower than we previously had to as well. We can't wait to see how much this work will improve our heating bills this winter. We would highly recommend Insulwise to any of our friends, and have allready done so in fact.
Description of Work: Andy and his crew insulated our entire house, from the basement to the attic, and all walls. We have a home built in 1926, which had zero insulation at all.

Andy and his crew, Anthony and Sean, arrived on time (9am) the day of the installation. Andy showed the guys what needed to be done since he had some other appointments to go to and would be leaving once they got started. They then began to unload their equipment from the truck and covered the floors leading to the attic stairs. After Andy left, Anthony and Sean continued to work diligently. They kept me informed of their progress and several times told me to go up and see what had been done. Everything was completed around 6pm. The guys did a great job and left no mess behind. Andy and his crew were very professional and courteous. My wife and I are both happy with the results.

Andy and his crew of two guys were great. Andy is extremely knowledgeable about energy efficiency and he wrote up a specific job plan based on the particulars of my house. He was very professional and easy to work with, and returns phone calls quickly. As best as I could tell the work was done in a high quality manner. They brought me up to the attic when finished and the work looked really good. There wasn't even much of a mess and they did a good job with the clean up. Obviously this was not a cheap project, but I believe that in the long run I will save a lot more money than I spent in terms of my heating bill.

The two days of work went extremely well. The crew showed up on time and immediately began the work. Tarps were placed on the floor in all areas and care given to make sure no damage was done to any floors or furnishing. As the work progressed Andy Haak (Company Owner) kept me updated on the progress of the work and discussed any unanticipated problems the crew uncovered and how they were going to deal with them. My approval of their suggested solutions was always sought before proceeding. Upon completion of the first day's work the entire work area was completely cleaned and all moved items replaced. Day two went just as well as the first. Tarps were placed over the floor and all furnishing covered with plastic. Care was taken to make sure the foam insulation was applied properly and thoroughly. Clean up was thorough to included a recleaning of the first day's work area to insure nothing was missed. The entire crew was very friendly, courteous, and professional. I was very pleased to see that Andy Haak was present throughout both days and continually supervised his men. I would not hesitate to recommend Insulwise for work on anyone's home.
Description of Work: Andy Haak and his crew did a whole house airflow evaluation of our house prior to the signing of a contract. This airflow test easily demonstrated all the places cold air was invading our home. Increasing insulation to a depth that exceeded Pennsylvania code requirements and sealed heat loss areas in the attic was accomplished on the first day. On day two, closed cell foam was sprayed on the inside of the rim joists and foundation top plate to seal out air intrusion.

If I could give Insulwise an A++++, I would. Andy Haak was absolutely wonderful. He came to my house and performed a very thorough energy efficiency assessment. He then worked up a detailed estimate and explained each step of the proposed project. There was a lot to do. Our second floor was very hot in the summer and very cold in the winter. Andy spent a good deal of time in the attic looking for and taking photos of problem areas. Not only was our insulation insufficient, Andy found that part of our multi-level house was not finished properly and had no insulation, at all. He built an airtight ceiling using plywood over the recessed ceiling and insulated. There was also an area that had ductwork very close to the roof, but was not insulated. There was no access to this area, so Andy had to make an access door through a closet to reach it. He insulated the area fully. Our basement had gaps in the rim joists and Andy removed the existing insulation, sealed the gaps, and re-insulated. It was quite a construction project, and it was handled so well. Andy and his crew (Sean and Anthony) were very professional and and respectful. They worked for three days and always made sure to clean up any mess before leaving for the day. The results...the upstairs is much more comfortable, the basement is less humid, and I am very hopeful that we will no longer have ice dams on our roof when it snows. I would definitely recommend Insulwise. Thank you, Andy for a job well done!

After reading many sources about modern ?building science? and insulation retrofitting, I began searching the internet for reputable contractors who could insulate my attic the way I wanted it. I read many reviews on Angie?s List, but only one companies reviews mentioned anything about ?air sealing? the attic floor, which was what I wanted. I called Insulwise and arranged an estimate. Andy, the owner, arrived on time for the estimate and was very polite. We did a walk through of my attic and discussed what I wanted and how the work would be completed. We discussed my house and building science trends for about an hour. We spent about another hour chatting about each others occupations. We arranged a date for the job to take place and Andy departed. The day the job took place, Andy called me prior to his arrival. He and his crew were very courteous and appropriately dressed. They unloaded the truck and laid drop cloths down from the front door to the attic entrance. Then, they carried all their supplies to the attic and began working. The crew worked really hard all day. Andy had told me this would be a two day job, but he came down in the afternoon and asked if I would mind if they worked a little late and finished the job that day. I told him to go ahead. They worked until the early evening and completed the job. They also tolerated me poking around, asking questions, and checking out their work. Upon finishing, Andy walked me through the attic and pointed out all the work that had been done and answered more of my questions. I can?t recommend Insulwise enough. Andy is very nice guy who does great work at very reasonable rates. His crew was very hard working and pleasant as well. My furnace is running far less and the house, especially my son?s bedroom, is far more comfortable. We haven?t received any bills yet, but I?m certain there will be substantial savings.

The process is messy and dusty, but the team made every effort to clean up. I'm glad we won't be going through this process again, but so far, it certainly seems the end result is worth it.
Description of Work: Insulation was blown into all outside walls. The attic was accessed through two holes cut into a closet. They insulated the attic and all the spaces they could access from the closet. In the basement, the duct work was sealed as was the foundation. The holes were rough finished and the clean up completed by the end of day 2 on the job. The three men were courteous and quick to respond to any requests. While it is too soon to tell of improvement via utility bills, it certainly is more comfortable. Previously it was not possible to keep both the first and second floors at a comfortable temperature. Thati is no longer the case. We are very pleased with that. By the way, I'm not sure what has happened with your system at Angie's List, but I did complete the survery previously. While I was redoing it, I discovered things that I had entered had been erased. Perhaps, Angie needs to check on the survey system. Thanks.

I first contacted Andy (Alpine's owner) because he came highly recommended from our home inspector. Phone calls and questions were always returned and answered quickly. I feel that I had to be some what irritating with all my phone calls and questions, but Andy was always more than glad to answer and help me out. Through all of my questions, Andy had stopped by our house a couple times and put a plan together a course of action for what would work best in our old house. It has only been a couple of weeks since the work was completed and my wife and I can notice a difference already in the heating efficiency of our home. Aside from the professional interaction, the quality of work is great too. Everything was kept in order and covered to keep everything clean and neat. I highly recommend using Alpine for any insulation issues you may have with your home.
Description of Work: The following insulation work was performed on our house: - insulated the attic floor with cellulose insulation - replace the old attic door with a new air tight one - spray foam the band joists and any necessary gaps and voids in the basement

Andrew is very knowledgeable and upfront. He and his co-worker Tim are very dedicated to the task and deliver on what they promise. Showed up on time and finished about 10 hours later - they worked hard all day. Already notice an improvement with the first cool days of Fall.
Description of Work: Andy came to my house and wrote up a quote on the spot for cellulose in the attic, boxing out (sealing) can lights in the attic, boxing out (sealing) an attic fan, boxing out (sealing) the attic stairs, sealed edges of the attic, Spray foamed my basement to make it air tight, sealed off the duct work in my house, and finally blow in insulation into my garage roof and seal that off as well. Had him do all of the above except the work in the garage. Only reason I did not' t have him do the garage work was due to my own budget. Hopefully in the future I can have Andy and Tim come back and complete other insulation work on my house.

Great. absolutely great experience. Before we met Andrew and Alpine insulation, we had a few contractors show up to our house and spend maybe 10-15 minutes walking around and measuring the floor, then popping their heads upstairs for a second and pretty much just saying, 'Yup, we'll pump some insulation up there, give you a power vent and you'll be all good'. One guy didn't even take the time to actually look, just gave us an estimate based on the floor plan. From the moment Andrew from Alpine showed up, we knew we had the right contractor. He spent over an hour and a half walking around with me and detailing exactly the problems that we had. From Roof to basement, he took the time to find problem areas and give us help, education and ideas on what we could do. He was able to spot problems that our home inspector even missed. His price was very fair, especially after seeing what others wanted to charge us for half the work. Overall, this was just a great experience and his turnaround to complete the work was within a week. I couldn't give a higher recommendation than this company. Thanks Andrew for all the hard work.
Description of Work: Alpine Insulation did a full attic insulation consisting of roof venting, foam sealing, 12" of blown in insulation, HVAC insulation and line replacement, repair of problem areas and work around non-insulation contact lighting.

The guys were very considerate of our property and cleaned up very well after both days. They were on time and worked hard the entire time here. Thanks a ton Andy and Jeff!
Description of Work: Andy and Jeff did a perfect job and were a pleasure to work with. We had our insufficiently insulated attic brought up to current standards as well as a new floor decking installed above the new insulation. They also rerouted a bathroom vent to the roof which was previously run to the soffit. Andy and Jeff got all the work done in the two days as Andy had quoted. They moved all of our stored junk out of the attic and stacked it neatly and carefully and then put it all back after the job was done. Andy's attention to detail and knowledge of the latest techniques is impressive. He air sealed a number of areas including wrapping tyvex paper around a skylight with batting insulation and the wall to our cathedral master. He sealed around the exhaust power fan allowing for greater exhaust of the summer heat. We can already notice the difference in how much cooler it is in our upstairs with the minor heat wave this week. In fact, we are replacing the roof this year and have decided to not have a ridge vent installed after seeing how well the fan now works- saving a fair bit of money. The hatch for the drop down stairs is a creative design that is really efficient. He even rebuilt the drop down stairs to make them sturdier. He built boxes around the recessed lights that had previously ben left open and covered with cellulose insulation which was both drafty and a fire hazard. I can't say enough about Alpine Insulation. I wouldn't dream of using anyone else for this type of work.

They were on-time and very professional. The owner walked around with me and discussed various option. He looked at the house as a whole and had a very good understanding of insulation theory. They were very clean overall. I think there was a total of one dirty foot print on the carpet and one spot of dripped drywall mud. Given how much they were doing in the attic and how dirty it is overall, I considered it very good. I'm convinced if I had pointed them out, they'd have cleaned them up, but it was small and I did it myself. They were good about putting down drop cloths. He also let me know what to expect as far as what to expect afterwards. He let me know that they would patch the holes in the walls, but not finish them and that there would be a fine dust the next day as everything settled. They were also very willing to work around some limitations with my 1-year old being in the house sometimes. I was extremely happy with the work they did for the price, and my house has been more comfortable. Our 3rd floor is now pretty much usable year-round.
Description of Work: Insulation blown into outside walls; insulated rim joist; insulation added to attic crawl space and on knee-walls; vents added to roof; josits under 3rd floor leading to crawl space were insulated.

Andy was a true pro, from the initial estimate to the final cleanup. He knows detailed information about the insulation trade, and provided me with numerous examples of how he could help seal up the attic space and better insulate the area. When it was discovered that the bathroom exhaust vent was in terrible shape (and was installed incorrectly, as well), Andy recommended a fix and said it would due no problem for his crew. The results were immediately noticeable - the house is a more consistent temperature, and our utility bills are lower. It appears as though the furnace doesn't need to turn on as often, saving us money! We had another contractor come with an estimate for blown-in fiberglass, and the price was much higher. If you are considering attic insulation, Andy is the guy to call - no question.
Description of Work: 12" of blown cellulose insulation in attic, sealing of all cracks in attic (sill plates, etc), installed new attic vent for bathroom exhaust.
