I got only two quotes, but this seemed to be enough because they were close, and because this company and the other one was rated highly by either Angie's List or a competing local organization, I forget which. I chose this company over the other because Bennis realized right away that my OTHER chimney needed major repairs if I was going to use it for a decorative gas fireplace (I am not doing that). They were very good communicating with me about their plans and scheduling, and although they started 6 days later than originally planned, I knew about it. However, I don't get up until 8:30 or 9, and they began working at about 7:15 directly outside my bedroom window, which was annoying at best. The main work took them two days. Some time during the second day, I realized that the part they had stuccoed looked entirely different from the existing stucco on my 1740s-era home, which is built of rubble stone with 18and quot; thick walls, mortared and lightly stuccoed, per the usual colonial style. The new stucco finish was different. Further, the new part extended at least an inch beyond the rest of that side of my house, so it was very noticeable. When I called this to their attention, they had no comeback. I called the office and assumed the owner would call me back. Instead, he apparently came over and had the men smooth over the work to make it look acceptable, without talking to me at all. It still didn't look right. I asked to speak in person with the owner, Mr. Bennis, and he came over first thing the next morning. (Now I had been awakened early three days in a row.) Further work was done on the house, and I then paid the bill, with a note saying that although it looked much better, there were still stucco fragments on my antique shutters, the window frames, and elsewhere. A few days later, thinking I'd have to live with the little remaining mess, I was again awakened at 7:15 by odd noises. Sure enough, they had returned for a fourth day to do a final clean-up. The job is acceptable, given what I can see from the ground. But whew! It was a hassle for both them and me. I guess in future, I will have to make sure with any contractor beforehand that they are aware the colonial-era house has special needs, and that they are prepared for that. (I just bought this house in May.)
Description of Work: Bennis's company repaired a broken chimney corbel and cap and repaired the stucco on the chimney and the wall adjacent to it.

After a terrible experience with one company and a no-show with another one, I selected Ed Bennis Chimney Repairs from Angie's list. Wow! Was I impressed! Eric, and another fellow whose name I did not catch, came in and went right to work. No fast talking - although they did lend a sympathetic ear to my complaints about my previous experience. Not only did they thoroughly clean my fireplace chimney, they fixed and oiled a broken flue, patched a small piece of pointing and provided instructions to my husband and me on safety and how to build a good fire in the fireplace - all for the price of a basic chimney cleaning! They cleaned up after themselves. They were punctual and friendly. It is such a relief to know that there is a good chimney sweep out there. I would highly recommend this company!

Their price was reasonable enough that my husband went with them immediately. Normally, I get more than one estimate but he said that we should just let them do the job. For the most part, we were happy with their work it was just that maybe there was a little bit of miscommunication with the workers and then they left the water on in the back or they had left something overnight or something like that. The job was done fine. We had let them do the job after the earthquake since it was then that we started to have a leak in the chimney and we had not had a problem since then. About 20 years ago, when we first moved here, a guy did work for us and told us to cap our chimney but my husband did not do it. And so, we had a flying squirrel that came in the house through the chimney and he did not believe me until he saw it for himself one night. He then understood why the guy told us to cap the chimney and so he capped it. And when Bennis came out, they found out that my husband totally capped it wrong so they had to fix it.

I got 3 estimates from A-rated contractors on Angie's List. The work to be done was re-pointing of an eight foot section of the chimney outside the house near the roofline. The three quotes were $950 (Bennis), $3400 and $3575. Normally I would have been leary of such a low bid but Tim Bennis was very reassuring when he came out to look at what needed to be done. The two man crew showed up on time, were very professional and did a great job.

We were advised of a severe creosote build-up in our fireplace chimney by another sweep who was not prepared to undertake the project. We called Bennis, and a representative came the next day to evaluate our needs and provide an estimate for required service. We then agreed to schedule the services. On each of the three visits, Bennis personnel arrived promptly and as scheduled. They were courteous, professional, and communicative, explaining each issue and the methods to be used to correct it. Over our nearly 30 years in this house--and many, many chimney inspections and sweepings--no one before mentioned a construction quirk in our chimney that led to the tendency to accumulate soot and creosote in a particular area. Bennis described the problem and suggested ways to mitigate future difficulties. Though this treatment cost about three times as much as a typical sweep because of the creosote build-up, we are very pleased with the result and look forward to being a regular customer of this service.
Description of Work: Stage 3 creosote treatment and chimney sweep. This was a two step process with a chemical cleaner application followed a week later by a final sweeping.

Of 5 estimates, this company's estimate ranked second in terms of the costliness. Their proposal was thorough and helpful to understand. We decided to use another company, though Bennis Chimney was our #2 or 3. I would certainly consider them next time we get brick surface restored/repointed.

Clearly exceeded expectations. I initially thought price on walkway pads was a little high however after watching work costd of everything were very reasonable. Workers worked very hard and cleaned up every day. I would give an outstanding recomendation - these guys are trustworthy. They also did not ask for payment until they were completly done and cleaned up.

Excellent! They showed up exactly on time for both the estimate and date of service. They were professional, courteous, and knowledgeable about their trade. They were respectful of my home, and cleaned up after themselves. They are also excellent masons, and so I had them come back for another job of repairing/waterproofing my basement walls. Again this time they were courteous, professional, and extraordinarily respectful of my home. After seeing them in action on 2 different jobs in my house, I would say they are all easy to work with, and I would not hesitate to recommend them to others. Also, the representative who answers their phone was pleasant and nice.
Description of Work: Our chimney was deeply in need of repair. They removed and rebuilt the back of the damaged firebox, installed smoke tite in the smoke chamber, cleaned the flue, and installed crown wash at top of chimney to seal gaps & cracks in crown wash.

Bennis first came out to clean and inspect my fireplace and chimney in a house I have recently pruchased. They were prompt, clean and thorough. The inspection revealed that they needed to replace and remove a section of cracked cermaic pipe, install a cap, do some pointing in the firebox and replace the ash trap door in the firebox and the basement. They mailed me a quote for $800 that week. Because $800 seemed like such a fair price, I scheduled the service immediately. They were on time, clean, efficient and did some extra masonry work around the ash trap door in the basement, for which I was not charged. They had to return two weeks later to install the chimney cap and the two ash trap doors after the masonry work had cured properly. That went just as smoothly. The men who did the work were polite, friendly, thorough and very talented. I could not have been more pleased.

Ed arrived on time with two assistants. They kept everything extremely clean. He explained the whole process and made recommendations for some minor repairs. We were a bit nervous as someone had told us that all chimney sweeps now come, look at your old chimney and immediately recommend an expensive stainless steel liner. Ed said our chimneys were in good shape and did not need to be lined. An assistant showed me up into the fireplace chimney after work and explained how to apply an anti-creosote spray which they gave us as part of the service. Price- can't really compare as we did not get other quotes as we had a good recommendation and Ed worked at my workplace and I had a good experience there as well. However, we thought the price was very good for the time invested and the quality of work.

I called Ed Bennis because he was referred by another Angies List company that didn't install liners. They came out for an estimate in less than a week ( I was already waiting over a month for my appointment with another company). Mr. Bennis opened our heater cleanout and found that our terracotta liner was basically dust in the bottom of it. He scraped out all the debris and even swept up! He wrote ASAP on the quotation and the liner was installed 2 days later. The installers were at my house between 8 and 9, protected the area they were working in and installed the new liner. They had troubles because of the shape of the flue, but were able to get it installed and left around 3:30. They were very nice and I didn't hear any bad language like someone else had mentioned. They had to open a big hole in my wall - took bricks out , but they cleaned up very well and vacuumed everything. I would definetly recommend them to people and use them in the future since I need some pointing done on the chimney as well.

After having 2 other companies not show up, I called Ed Bennis (They were actually doing work a few doors down). They gave me a date and time that they would be at my house and they were ON TIME!!! I was a little worried due to having white carpet in the livingroom with the fireplace, but the men very very careful and there was not a flake of dirt found on the carpet. I will use this company again and offer no reservations about recommending them.

Ed from Ed Bennis Chimney Repair and Masonry Restoration finally solved the problem for me. It turned out that I have a really old brick wall on my chimney because of which the leak was recurring. Ed gave me two choices, one was to tear down the whole wall and put up new bricks or to put stucco over the bricks I had. He put stucco over the bricks that I had and that solved the problem. He is professional but I was a little upset with the language that his men were using. He is a little rough around the edges but he does what it takes to solve the problem. I thought that his prices were reasonable too. I would use Ed Bennis Chimney Repair and Masonry Restoration Company in the future.

Work was excellent. Clean-up perfect.
Description of Work: I have used this company several times to clean my chimney, install chimney caps etc. I noticed that the opposite side of the wall where my fireplace was positioned was very hot after a recent wood fire on a cold evening. Bennis came out inspected the firebox and suggested that several bricks should be re-pointed on wall of the box as well as the floor. They also suggested a stainless steel fire-back for the rear of the fire place. They performed the work the same day.

I had them come out in Febuary to give an estimate for a chimney repair and lining. I have four chimney's on a old Victorian House and of the four companies they were one of the two that actually got up onto the very steep roof. They were very professional and they stuck to their Febuary pricing for the liner even though I had them do it in November, but when the guys came out to do the liner they did decide that it would be more to do the repairs than we had originally discussed. Other than that they were friendly and trustworthy and didn't seem to be trying to sell me on anything I didn't need. These guys were a pleasure to have around and I will be having them come back to do more work asap.

Came out to house promptly and got quote promptly. Quote made more sense than a competing quote and the price was less. Scheduled job, called before, and showed up on date set as promised. Had correct number of people for the job. Set scaffolding and tore down chimney one day. Rebuilt on next working day. Paint and finish was excellent- you could not tell a difference with the rest of the house. Cleaned up and did not leave materials behind. Added cap to flue opening. Overall I was pleased with the job. Thought they were professional and did a good job.
