Roofing
We have a very simple roof: single story, low-pitch, 2 segment, <1600sqft roof. We had sought quotes from several other companies and Bill Westlake had the lowest price with high quality architectural shingles. He came highly recommended from a coworker who lives in the area. He was very responsive and punctual. On the first day, he arrived with 3 coworkers (his son, and brother-in-law). They immediately got to work removing old shingles. I went to work, while my wife stayed home to monitor their progress. Mid-morning the roofers received a call that the shingles were being delivered to the wrong address, on a nearby road. Once the shingles were delivered to the correct address, we received an unannounced visit from the local inspector. Bill had not previously secured a building permit, and was forced to purchase one on the spot. He was also asked to show proof of insurance for his crew. Because he had contracted his guys, they had separate insurance which were not permitted under the local building permit. Bill resorted to finishing the job by himself. In 3 days, Bill completed the entire job, including the soffit, on budget. My only additional complaint is that there were several hundred roofing nails scattered in the yard and landscaping. Also, it appears that while getting up and down from the roof, damage was done to the gutter level and supports. I found 3 broken gutter supports and several points where the gutters were no longer level. Within a week of the construction, my front gutter (which had never previously had drainage problems) filled with water and overflowed because the gutter had been pulled low and away from the facia. I never asked Bill to return and repair these times, I fixed them myself. Overall, I'm please with the quality of the roof and he price we paid, but I was disappointed by the lack of permitting and insurance. The subsequent damage to the gutter was also disappointing. I am unsure whether I will contract Bill and his crew in the future.
