Had them come out and do an estimate - after reached agreement, they scheduled the work for three weeks later.  When we had a time conflict , they were very cooperative  and arranged to come out four days earlier.  They arrived on time & were able to complete most of the work the first day.  The second day was to do the concrete finishing work.  They cleaned up after themselves & took their trash  ( including big chucks of concrete) with them.  The jack hammer they used on the floor created a lot of dust but they made sure the tarps I had covered things with where secured  so there wasn't much I had to do once the tarps were removed.  They offered to move the bigger items back  into place- like the washer and dryer.  I think that this job gave them a few difficulties because they had to work under the staircase, around a the furnace and a wall that divided a storage area.   The workers were friendly and polite, took time to answer my questions ( I tend to hoover).

I got a bid from one company, and then I realized that I needed a company that specialized in foundations.  They represent themselves as being a professional company that knows what it's doing.  However, if you don't read their contract fully and completely, they disclaim any damage to any customer lines, including sewer, electrical, etc.  They don't tell you that up-front.  They severed my sewer and offered to fix it themselves.  They aren't a plumbing company, so I knew they couldn't guarantee their work.  I got another plumber to come and spent $800.  I think they do great work.  However, people need to be very aware of the fact that they need to know exactly where all of their systems are.  I would have spent the $100 before the job to have a plumber snake the line and find out where it went.  That would have been easy.

Based on Angie's List, we contacted Terrafirma to see what could be done about the settling problem in the corner of the house. The salesman recommended (surprise!) their proprietary push-pin system to stabilize and level the structure. We received a quote Feb 19th and finally signed the $12,000 contract toward the middle of March. After the permitting and engineering was done, Chad and his crew showed up promptly on the morning of April 4th to start the job. It was scheduled to be a two-day project to insert support piers into the ground and level the structure. Although things went well at first, Chad soon found that the builder had cut major corners in building the foundation. Since there was no rebar in the foundation, it cracked big-time as they attempted to lift it. To make a long story short, the little 2-day project turned into 5+ days since they had to add external steel reinforcing to our foundation to mitigate the cracking. The TerraFirma engineers specified a lot of steel, so I feel things are now well-supported. The lifting process went very smoothly and the corner is now stabilized and within 1/4" of level. The doors now work fine and the drywall cracks have been greatly reduced - although we got a couple of (small) new cracks due to the lifting. Chad and his crew worked very hard and were consistently cheerful and communicated very well. They cleaned up the mess quite well, expecially considering they were working up the their ankles in mud most of the time. It should be noted that, despite the fact that the job took more than twice the estimated time and they incurred additional expenses for the steel, engineering, and permits, the price we paid was just the original quote. There was never any suggestion that we might be expected to pay more. I am very satisfied with Terrafirma and would recommend them to anyone with a similar problem.
Response from TerraFirma Foundation Systems
"TerraFirma is pleased that you were happy with the results of your project member. This is the result we strive for on every job we perform. Foundation projects can often be tricky because it is impossible to see what you are actually dealing with until you have the area excavated and prepped. As was the case with your project, you sometimes find that the foundation is inadequately built or has deteriorated over time to the point that is not stucturally suitable. Unfortunately, this typically causes a delay to the work schedule. TerraFirma will always make sure that the installation of a particular product (in this case- push piers) is performed correctly and attached to an adequate load-bearing surface before any stabilization/ lift is performed. This is the only way to guarantee that the work we perform will permanently fix the problem. All of our crew members are trained, certified, and committed to providing our customers with the best service in the industry. We are glad that Chad and his crew represented this commitment on your project member. TerraFirma greatly appreciates your business and we look forward to assisting you with any future repair needs that may come up."

The young man showed up as scheduled, performed his measurements, and explained their pricing model and options. He wanted to follow up with one of their engineers prior to providing a formal quote, which was 4 weeks ago or more - I've not heard back from him since. While he was a nice guy, the lack of follow up in this business climate indicates either a lack of desire for the business, or other more problematic issues. The first thing I would recommend anyone looking at foundation leveling do is go hire an independent structural engineer for an assessment, I did that after this initial meeting for less than $200, and got an engineers assessment of the structural risk to the home of the situation. For what it's worth, raising the front edge of our house ~3" was estimated at ~$25k.
Response from TerraFirma Foundation Systems
"TerraFirma is a foundation repair contractor dedicated to customer service and providing the best products/services in the industry. We apologize member for the lag in communication from the initial visit to follow-up with the engineering info. This is not the way we do things. Customers who inquire about scheduling an inspection receive professional treatment from the minute they call in. All of our staff is trained and certified in foundation repair and customer service. We have implemented scheduling software to ensure that all appointments are documented and any follow-up needs are met timely. We confirm every appointment at least 3 times (e-mail and/or phone) to make sure we meet our customer's needs. We enter the results of every appointment into the system as well so that we have the information readily available should a customer call in with any questions or concerns. We send out follow-up letters and e-mails to make sure that the appointment was handled professionally and all needs were met. All of this is done to ensure we don't run into any situations like the one described in the report above. We are sorry that this happened in your case member. The foundation repair solution that was presented to you was a permanent fix. There are a lot of cheaper "band aid" fixes out there. When TerraFirma lifts a portion of a house, we guarantee that the area worked on will not settle again. These projects consist of excavating the foundation out and installing 3" steel pipe into the ground. The reason a house settles in the first place is inadequate soil under the foundation itself. The only way to permanently solve this problem is to take the existing soil out of the equation. The 3" steel pipes penetrate the active layer of soil and get down to suitable load-bearing strata. Steel brackets are then atttached to the home's foundation. We can then raise the strucutre back to its most practical state of recovery. These types of projects are labor intensive and require specialized steel/ hydraulic products. The end result is a stabilized foundation that will allow your structure to stay put. Again, we apologize for the miscommunication you experienced with our company. Steps have been taken to ensure this does not happen again. I hope we have the opportunity to earn your business again should any repair needs pop up. Thank you."

The work went fairly well. I was told the workmen would arrive between 8:00am and 9:00am, but they didn't show up for at least another 30 minutes. I was told that I might want to go out for breakfast to avoid the jack hammer noise. I left for more than an hour only to find that they hadn't even started drilling when I got back. The drilling didn't really start until late in the afternoon and they said they had run into several problems. They also said it was going to take another day. Originally, I was told it should only take one day, so I had to call and reschedule the plumber and dry-waller for later that week. Actually, the work took until about 2pm of the 3rd day as they said they did not have the correct bolts. The two men were very nice and I didn't have any distrust of them, but it was just a little frustrating that it took so long. One other thing was that the plumber told me they couldn't attach the drain to the existing sump pump as was originally intended because the existing one pumped the sewage from the bathroom up to the city sewage connection. (I have a daylight basement style of house). I asked the workmen when they came and they agreed that that wasn't allowed. I then asked them to install another sump pump to handle the drain water. They agreed to do so, and the smart pump suggested added another $1025 to the price (Original price quoted as $2458.00). They handled that install flawlessly and I was very pleased with the result. Immediately after the work was complete we had over a week of hard rain, and I have not seen any water coming in, so I believe the system is working well. Overall, I am very happy with the result.
Response from TerraFirma Foundation Systems
"TerraFirma is pleased that you were happy with the results of your project. We definitely apologize for being late on the first day. All of our employees are trained professionals at what they do. Part of that training is performing customer service. We are continually training on better and more efficient ways to mobilize to the job site (with correct inventory items in hand) and communication. We are not perfect, by any means, but strive to improve each and every day at these aspects of the service we perform. We understand the importance of our customer's time and try to adhere to all promised schedules. Construction projects sometimes run into snags once unforeseen conditions appear after the area is excavated. The most important thing is to get it right and prevent future call backs due to poor craftsmanship. Our goal is to improve on our standing as the most trusted foundation repair company in the industry. Feedback from important customers, such as yourself, provide us the opportunity to make things right and improve on our skills. Again, we are happy you ended up with the result you were looking for and apologize for the glitches along the way. We hope that we have earned your trust and look forward to assisting you in the future with any repair needs you might have."

Patrick Dunn called to let me know his previous appointment had run long and he apologetically informed me he would be 20 minutes late. I appreciated the consideration and he arrived as promised. He was very friendly and explained thoroughly the entire process and worked with me to customize a bid to suit our needs. He expressed confidence and pride in his company and the services they provide. A follow up email containing a very precise quote with lots of details arrived within 24 hours. He followed up to make sure I had all the information that I needed and even provided me with an updated estimate that reflected some changes in our plans. Although we ultimately changed our basement waterproofing plans to involve an outdoor method, I would highly recommend them to anyone considering an indoor basement waterproofing system.
Response from TerraFirma Foundation Systems
"TerraFirma is pleased that you gave us the opportunity to quote your basement waterproofing project. We are glad to hear that you had a professional experience with Patrick. All of our inspections involve the customer as much as possible. We strive to make sure that the customer completely understands what we are proposing and why we recommend doing it that way. We document everything that is discussed during the inspection to make sure the project is completed as process once the customer decides to move forward. We ask questions during the inspection to make sure we accomplish everything you want addressed with our work and more importantly, we ask questions to make sure the customer understands what he/she wants accomplished out of the work. This ensures that the customer will be 100% satisfied with the work being done by TerraFirma. We are sorry that we couldn't help you out this time but look forward to the opportunity to earn your business again in the future. We definitely appreciate the recommendation to all of the other Angie's List members. Thank You."

"TerraFirma Foundation Repair is a company that specializes in foundation, basement and crawl space problems. We have a wide variety of products and services that are designed to permanently address and solve these types of problems. We will not attempt to perform services that we do not specialize in or install products that we are not willing to stand behind with the best warranty in the industry. We do not believe this would be in the best interst of our customers or in line with our goal of becoming the most trusted foundation repair company in Oregon. What we do for our customers in cases like the one posted by the Member above is network with other industry related professionals and refer only the companies that have the same principles and dedication to customer satisfaction that we adhere to and demand on every single project we work on. All sub-contractors we refer have been checked out and pre-screened to ensure they meet TerraFirma standards. TerraFirma is dedicated to serving you, the customer, and providing the best home repair experience possible. If turning down the work is in your best interest, that's what we'll do. We, as contractors, value you and want to earn your business and referrals. We look forward to adding the Member's name to the growing list of satisfied friends and neighbors who have chosen TerraFirma to perform (or in this case, assist with) the work on their most valuable investment- their home. The crew was very professional and patient with my numerous questions during the proceedure, taking time to explain each step. When they were done they cleaned up and patched the concrete they had to remove in order to do the job. In fact, they probably patched a couple of areas that weren't their responsibility.

"Thank you Member for the kind review of the repair we performed on your home. TerraFirma is extremely pleased that you were happy with the work and satisfied with the results. That is our ultimate goal on every project we install! In going over your project at our weekly production meeting, Chad, Greg, Stephen and Kyle all commented on how helpful it was to have the owner of the home interested and truly involved in the project. This definitely increases the likelihood of a happy customer because he/she is involved throughout the process and understands what is happening and why. I am also glad that the guys were able to answer your questions and provide insight into what was going on throughout the project. This is an important step to providing excellent customer service and why we require training and certifications for all of our employees at TerraFIrma. 100% customer satisfaction is what we shoot for on every project/ service we perform. I look forward to adding the Member's name to the growing list of satisfied friends and neighbors who have chosen TerraFirma to perform the work on their most valuable investment- their home. They were really responsive and I just got a postcard asking for feedback from Chris Gordon who was the guy that came out. He came out and looked at the job and it turned out to be much too small for them and t the end of it, I did not use their service. He did a very thorough, friendly and talked about what could be done with my foundation repair. I have a 1920 garage and the footing has been tilted up by tree roots. I want to level the garage, so the question was, do we jack up the whole thing, lift the structure and demolish the foundation and put a new one in. I called them and they seemed to be very highly regarded, but they were too big for the job. He would do it, but it would just cost more, but he made a referral to someone who came in within a couple of days. I would use them if I ever had a bigger project because they are someone that understands what needs to be done and the cost of things.
Response from TerraFirma Foundation Systems
"In talking with Chris about the job he proposed for the member above, it turns out that we were not too big for the job but rather the project required some services that TerraFirma does not provide. Tree roots present a very tricky problem that requires an arborist to determine whether or not cutting the roots out will cause damage to/ or kill the tree completely. We see situations all of the time where tree roots are popping up to ground level and cause a "heaving" effect on the foundation that causes cracking in the concrete. Typically, we have customers call up an arborist to assess the situation and remove the problem tree roots prior to us coming out and stabilizing the foundation. Once the tree roots are removed by a specialist, the void that is left can allow the foundation to be left hanging in the air unsupported. This is when TerraFirma comes in and installs underpinning to provide adequate support for the foundation. TerraFirma performs projects on all types of structures, both big and small. What we won't do is perform work that we don't specialize in. This is in line with our goal of becoming the most trusted foundation repair company in the industry and providing our customers with 100% satisfaction. TerraFirma appreciates your kind words above and thanks you for your interest in our company. Hopefully, we can assist you in the future with any repair needs you might encounter."

They seemed to be professional and they seemed to know what they were doing. The price they quoted was high and the work would not help me solve my problem.
Response from TerraFirma Foundation Systems
"We are sorry that we were unable to help you out with the crack in your patio foundation. We strive to provide all of our potential customers with the proper diagnosis/ fix and perform a service at a fair price. In conducting an inspection, TerraFirma looks for a way to fix the cosmetic issues(ie-cracking) by addressing the reason why the concrete cracked in the first place. Differential settlement and unsuitable soils create a wide variety of problems when it comes to concrete foundations. Customers often think that a crack in the concrete is a simple fix or can be filled with epoxy/ grout and everything will be ok. The problem is that this is a "band-aid fix" in most cases and will only re-appear in the future because the root problem was not addressed. Settlement cracks appear when the soil becomes saturated and "swells" up or when the soil dries out and "shrinks" down. TerraFirma's support systems are designed to permanently fix the problem and address the reason why the cracks occurred in the first place. Oour underpinning systems are installed to depths that go beyond the active layer of soil and get down to suitable load-bearing strata where your foundation/ patio can be permanently stabilized and, in most cases, raised back to a more level condition. Often times, projects end up being bigger and more expensive than customers expect. I can assure you that this isn't because we are making them bigger to make a project more profitable. The projects are the size/cost they are because we feel that what we estimate is what it will take to do the project right- no more, no less. It is our goal that every project we do work on ends up with you, the customer, 100% satisfied. Again, sorry that we were unable to perform the work on your patio. Hopefully we can assist you in the future with any repair needs you might have. Thank you for showing interest in our products/ services."

They were very helpful and extremely courteous. They were not the company that did the work that I was looking for, but they were able to recommend someone that would do the work for me. They did a good job though I didn't get any quote from them.

"TerraFirma appreciates the kind words and wants to thank you for showing interest in our products/ services. Some of the potential projects we look at, unfortunately, don't need any of the products or services we provide. While that doesn't make us happy, we will not take on a project unless it involves something that we specialize in. What does make us happy is satisfied customers. So, even if we can't do the work, we want every customer to end up with a rewarding repair project. We do this by networking with other professionals and compiling a list of "TerraFirma Approved" companies that we are willing to refer out on projects we don't handle. We only recommend companies that show the same dedication to customer satisfaction and quality control that we abide by on every project we perform. This ensures that you, the customer, will be satisfied and receive the right type of service for your particular needs. Hopefully we can assist you in the future with any repair needs you might have. Thanks again for showing interest in TerraFirma. We appreciate it."

They were great. We wanted to make sure that our foundation was okay. The person who came out for the assessment was helpful and was willing to answer a lot of questions for us. He also helped us in keeping the work equipment in our garage loft. He was knowledgeable and spent a lot of time with us. He was personable as well. He gave us information about how to fix the foundation ourselves. The price charged was great, as other places were charging me more like 100 $ or 150 $. The advice given by them was great as well. Tom was on time for the estimate and was nice enough. Unfortunately he took the opportunity to try to sell us on the idea that our foundation was falling into the ground and needed to be lifted with a series of push piers at a cost of $10,000. After being incredibly freaked out, we had enough presence of mind to hire a qualified civil engineer to look at our foundation. After an extensive evaluation, including measuring the floor joists for level (something Tom never did), he concluded our foundation was in fine shape. Tom was unethically trying to sell us something that we did not need by preying on our fears. I wouldn't touch Terra Firma with a 51 foot pole.

"TerraFirma prides itself on being a highly reputable and ethical company. It is our foremost concern that our employees our honest and open, and that our customers are satisfied with all aspects of their interaction with our company. This employee is no longer with the company. In an effort to ensure no misdiagnosis or unscrupulous practices, we have a hands-on diagnostic process with the home owner. In addition, all our findings are now reviewed by an independent engineer to validate the results and confirm the solution prior to work being preformed. We are very sorry about your experience and assure you we have taken the appropriate actions to eliminate any future issues."

Our house is situated on a hill. We noticed that some cracks were forming in the tile flooring of our finished basement and suspected foundation problems due to poor drainage. We had the drainage problem fixed and called Terra Firma to see if they could help with the foundation. They came out and investigated the problem. Their recommendation was to install 3 Push Piers under the foundation at the corner where the problem was occurring. We had to reschedule the work crew s arrival at our home a couple of times, due to other jobs Terra Firma was working on taking longer than expected. When they arrived they were courteous and conscientious about were they put the dirt from the holes that they dug. Again the work took a bit long than expected but was still completed within three days, which was reasonable to me. The crew forewarned me that when the house was lifted in that corner that further cracking of the tiles could occur. With me present, they lifted the corner slowly, looking for problems as it lifted. Further damage did occur at the base of a sliding glass door located in that corner of the basement. The door would no longer close properly. After discussing it with me, the work crew removed the tile at the base of the door to stabilize the door and allow it to open and close again. It left a gap in the flooring at the base of the door. While I wasn t thrilled to have another problem to fix, I was very happy to have the peace of mind that my house wasn t going to slide down the hill (at least not due to this problem anyway!).
Response from TerraFirma Foundation Systems
"TerraFirma is glad that you got what you paid for. We are built on integrity and appreciate when customer's give us a review reflecting that. We are also glad your house isn't going to slide down the hill now! When lifting a structure that has settled over time, sometimes windows and doors become out of alignment. These doors/windows maybe were even put in after the settlement had occurred. Once you lift the foundation back to level, these items will be off. The important thing is that you have a stable foundation now and can fix the cosmetic things once and for all. We appreciate the feedback and look forward to assisting you in the future with any repair needs."
