Our MCM house had their original single paned glass windows from floor to ceiling that had lost their seal due to cracked glazing and were now loose in their wood frames. Jared and Gordon bid the project and offered two options: 1- remove and re-set the single paned glass or 2 - upgrade to double paned glass. We felt that the cost of replacing to double paned was quite reasonable and the were happy to hear that they would work to retain the original look of our house. We were impressed by their attention to detail and communication throughout the project. Jared supervised and readily detailed the daily progress and kept us in the loop. Very happy with the project outcome and highly recommend Anderson for any MCM window upgrades or unique custom window projects.

I chose not to move foward with this company as their quote was twice that of other companies and their quote was for a step down from the Tuscany series of Milgard. I had to put a date in this form other wise it would not let me proceed. I did not have services done by this company as their quote was too high.
Description of Work: I received a quote to replace existing french doors.

Response from ANDERSON DOOR & WINDOW MECHANICS INC
As both Angieslist and the homeowner have stated, no work was performed. We met with the client at their request at no charge and provided them with a free service to evaluate their project costs. Therefore any feedback on our customer service, skill level, professionalism and business integrity from this party should have little or no bearing on any future decision by others to contract with our company. The many excellent ratings listed by customers who have hired us to perform work speak for themselves. It is unfortunate that people who don't hire us use Angieslist to vent their frustration over their personal financial restraints.

Company showed up on time as promised. Several issues that arose (typical of such work on a 35 yr old home) were quickly addressed. Work on two master bedroom windows took two days to complete so ADWM installed plywood on outside of house to cover window openings over night. Also installed tarp to deal with any overnight moisture. While this work was being completed (master bedroom window removal and re-install), a 3rd worker began the removal of old glass (double pane) on four external windows on south side of house that needed to be replace with new glass and seals due to 30+ years of sun exposure. This work was completed in 1 day split between afternoon of one day and morning of another. ADWM service personnel did a very good job of removing existing tongue and groove cedar siding (required to expose entire window frame) so it could be re-used without incurring additional expense. Service personnel did a very good job in cleaning up the job site. Quality work, friendly and competent service technicians that did the job right the first time. I had previously used ADWM to service a 30+ yr old patio sliding door that needed both new rollers and track. That work was done earlier this year. P Webber Beaverton, OR
Description of Work: Removed two large master bedroom windows, window frames and trim to resize and re-square window opening due to foundation settling. Reinstalled both windows along with window sills and framing, caulked & cleaned up. Also replaced glass and window seals on four (4) external windows on south side of house that were no longer air-tight.

Multiple projects were contracted: the first was total repair of a window and frame that was destroyed in a burglary in March, 2012. The work was completed beautifully by the owner's son. Bids for other repairs to door and another window were excessive and therefore not contracted. Subsequent to the excellent work that was completed, Anderson et al was asked to provide and install a bay window and issued a contract 7/11/12. Installation date was set for Monday, August 27, 2012. With minimal notice, the company delayed the work to the following Saturday, 9/01/12 during which time workers expect to be paid overtime and at which time workers discovered dry rot. The bid for repairing the damage was extremely high and therefore not acceptable. Anderson was asked to modify the order to accommodate tear-down of bay and measure for a narrower center picture window. A different company's contractors did an excellent job in removing the bay and framing for a new window. Anderson lost the measurements for the new window and failed to order the new window in a timely fashion. Ultimately, the new window was received in October, 2012 and there was barely time to install it and paint it before the rains. The last project cited above was a very poor performance by this company. Bids for labor were far above those from other excellent contractors. Communications were very poor, reasons cited by Anderson, et al, were that the scheduler was on vacation, there was too much business to keep up with and and quot;things are fairly crazy for us right now with the demand for our business.and quot; Gordon Anderson lost the measurements he made. These explanations offered scant comfort for me, the consumer. In my experience, Anderson Door is capable of doing excellent work. However, the price is excessive and the punctuality and communications are poor.

Response from ANDERSON DOOR & WINDOW MECHANICS INC
We're thankful for [member name removed] kind comments regarding the window installation we did for her previously. The comments about price are in our humble opinion, simply a matter of [member name removed] window assembly being in substantially worse condition than she had hoped, and the necessary costs exceeding her budget. Which brings us to her first inaccuracy. We were not asked to provide and install a bay window. She HAD an existing Bay Window, and asked us to replace the three dilapidated casement sash in the EXISTING bay window. Upon beginning to install the new windows, it was discovered that some of the exterior trim needed replacement. Upon removing some of the trim, it was discovered that the entire structure had substantial water damage deep inside. Repair or replacement suddenly became too expensive for her, and she didn't need us to simply create new rough-openings in the wall that remained when the bay assembly was removed. She's apparently comparing our subsequent price to rebuild her water damaged "wooden" bay-window assembly structure to the price of someone else removing the bay window structure and framing in the remaining hole in her wall into three rough openings (installing several 2X4s) for three vinyl windows, which is what she had done. Hardly comparable. We never did bid on what she ended up having done. On the charge of losing some measurements, guilty as charged. Not the first time and it won't be the last. Though it's exceedingly rare. On the charge of the demand for our services overwhelming us from time to time, also guilty as charged. We would proffer to the discerning folks amongst us, that there just might be a reason for that demand that might somewhat contradict some of what Jeanie is suggesting, but we would want to point out that we do seem to learn more and more every year about how to prepare better for the demand and to manage the growth of our ever growing business more skillfully. We're extremely thankful for the demand. Every business should have such problems. We have never tried to sell our lightning fast service and are generally known instead for trying to temper folk's expectations related to our services and our schedule. What [member name removed] omitted was that the August to October time-frame (if accurate, we didn't check) wasn't due so much to our schedule or the lost measurements, but was primarily due to the fact that she changed the scope of the work. Her changing from the Bay Window Structure to the existing exterior wall translated into her needing another window manufactured due to the sizing constraints of her now narrower overall net opening space. This meant more factory lead time to make her new windows. Please understand, that beyond removing some exterior trim, we never installed anything. We simply ordered another window on her behalf so that it matched the other two windows, and so her contractor-friend had to wait to have it manufactured before he could install it. [member name removed]kind of spins the time-frame thing to sound like she had to wait two months for us to finish the job. We never did any job. But be that as it may be, please be forewarned, that we are human, and we do make mistakes. If you are looking for some other kind of human beings, we are not the company to use. Seriously.please use our competitors. But if you do use us, we won't lie to you, and if we make a mistake, we'll do unto you as we would want done unto ourselves, and simply fix it. Again, be forewarned, patience may be required. Although, as you can tell by most of the postings on our company, dissatisfaction is a rarity.

Since I have arthritis in my hands, I wanted my front door deadbolt lock to be easier to turn, since it was getting really stiff. In addition, I wanted to add extra security by having the company install another deadbolt to the door at a higher level. When I called the company, I spoke to Pamela, who remembered me from previous jobs and had my file on hand right away. I told her my concerns and she offered me some ideas on how I might increase the security at my front door. We settled on an additional deadbolt lock, since it can be opened from the outside in case of emergency or just access by my cat sitter. She told me a service tech could come out that same afternoon and do the installation right away, which was perfect for my schedule. Russell arrived promptly at 12:30 and worked for two hours. He had to improve the locking mechanism on the old deadbolt to make it move smoothly, plus drill a new hole in the door and install the new deadbolt at a point where I indicated I wanted it to go. He wrote up the work order estimate, I signed it, and he worked diligently for the next two hours. He put down a heavy canvas drop-cloth and after the work was finished, cleared away everything and vacuumed the floor. I checked the locks and was very happy with how easily they worked. The work came in at the estimated price. Overall, it was a very smooth, positive experience. I've used this company several times over the years and their work is always excellent!

Called on a Tuesday afternoon and had someone out the next day. Technicians showed up on time, were clean, had good suggestions, communicated well, and the leak has stopped.

I have French Doors exposed to the full northwest (no covered porch). Many folks in the trades call them and quot;guaranteed to leakand quot; doors. Anderson took out the doors and door frame, put in a drain pan, a new threshold, new door sweeps and put it all back together. Its been about a year and no leaks. The service person did the job in 2 days. In between, he put up temporary (plywood) barrier to keep the elements out. I think the job was well done at a reasonable price.

We didn't actually go with the service. We found the prices to be much too high, and this was confirmed when we had The Door Works come out and fix the rollers on our Vinyl Sliding Patio Door for nearly half the estimated cost of Anderson Door. Gordon was courteous, arrived on schedule for the estimate, took pictures of the problem areas, and a few days later emailed us a detailed quote with several options. Sorry guys. I found you to be very professional, appreciated the detailed email and the multiple options, but we just couldn't see how replacing a couple rollers on a vinyl slider should be $325 when a competitor did it for $185. Even $185 seemed high, but at half your rate, it then seemed like a bargain.

Response from ANDERSON DOOR & WINDOW MECHANICS INC
Although we appreciate the kind things that were said about our company by this individual, again, we find it disturbing to have to read a post by a client who did not select us to work for them, who by lack of personal experience, knows nothing about our performance, work ethics, skill or customer service. Isn't this what consumers go to Angieslist for? The purpose of Angieslist is to provide consumer generated experiential information for homeowners to help them decide whom to hire to work on their property, based on the experience of other homeowners who contracted with local businesses. As Angieslist states itself, "more weight is given to a report where work has actually been performed." Homeowners will always find someone to work for less, especially in this economy. "The sweetness of the cheapest price is often forgotten by the bitterness of a job poorly done." There are many things to consider when hiring someone to work on your home, price is only one of them. Although we appreciate being represented by many happy clients on this website, we would ask all potential customers considering hiring us to remember that the remarks left by these few who did not hire us, seem to be indicative of their interest in using Angieslist only as a method of complaining about someone they don't know anything about.

Quote was quick, price was in range with other estimates. We chose Anderson based on our experience with the estimator. The workman, David, arrived on time and completed the work efficiently and with nice craftsmanship. He cleaned up the mess so that we hardly knew he'd been there. The strike plate for the new door hadn't been included, so he came back a couple days later to finish up and give us some pointers on the new door.

A previous tenant removed the security/screen door. We had an installer put it back on, but it was not put on correctly. It would not close all the way, got stuck on the bottom when closed, and would not lock anymore. I decided to call Anderson Door and Window Mechanics, Inc. because I had used them in the past to work on two of the doors at my home. They did an excellent job then and I knew I would get the same at the rental. The job was well done and the security/ storm door works like it should. I am glad I call them to do the reinstallation.

After chemically stripping paint off the front door of my 1921 bungalow (with 7 panes of glass), the stripper placed the door outside to dry, where it unfortunately fell over in the wind. Two panes of glass broke out, and after the wood dried, I noticed that it had split in a number of places. A general contractor, who a neighbor recommended, referred me to Anderson Door and Window Mechanics, calling them the "brain surgeons" of door repair. Although they were booked up for a few weeks and I did not have a front door during that time, Anderson did a fantastic job and the repair was worth the wait. The office staff, estimator and carpenter I worked with were all very professional and helpful. Jared, the carpenter who repaired my door, especially went above and beyond the call of duty. He managed to find a rare part (extra wide brass threshold cap) that we did not realize we would need. He also offered great advice and help on an unrelated dry rot problem on my front porch pillar! I was very impressed with the thorough, professional, friendly service that Anderson offered from start to finish. They gave me a discount on extra parts and labor that we did not anticipate, which was so helpful, and followed-up afterward to be sure everything was working well. Anderson also recommended a couple of folks for staining/varnishing the door, and I went with one of their recommendations. A+ quality work and service!! Special thanks to Jared for being so nice to work with, extra efforts, and tending to the details! I am a detail person and truly appreciate Jared's level of attention to the finer points. Thanks to Anderson Door and Window Mechanics, my vintage door has a new life!

We had to reschedule the appt. a few times. They also got my email address wrong...Eventually, they came out and a young fellow gave us a bid for new caulk on some of our external windows. I was shocked at the estimate - $1400-$1850 to re-caulk some windows...Absolutely insane. So ridiculous it is laughable. I got the feeling that they saw our house - thought to themselves -- these people have money - and started adding useless and unnecessary work to the bid...I just wanted a bid for them to recaulk two windows, yet the estimate included lots of scope that I didn't want...and even with that scope, the price was beyond comprehension. I have no idea if they are good or not - I passed on the work...I will not pay 10x the going price for services from this company. Beware!

The logistics on this job were a nightmare. Professional caulking done correctly takes time and expertise. The bid was based on over a dozen large second and third story windows. We inlcuded time to set up necessary scaffold to accomplish this task in our quote. We were asked to bid on this and we did. We did not add unnecessary work to the bid. We will not apologize for quoting a difficult job the amount it needs to be. We never pressure anyone to use our services and this client could have been kind and polite and said 'thanks, but no thanks, that's out of my budget." Instead he chose to post on this website and speak unkindly and untruthfully about a well respected contractor who chose to respond to his request and came to his home at no charge and spent considerable time with this client and did not receive any payment for our time and expertise. It is most unfortunate that a client must speak ill of someone just because he wants a difficult job done for pennies. Contractors beware!

I thought that the rollers on my sliding glass patio door had broken. I called Anderson and they qouted a price range on the phone that sounded reasonable to me so I booked an appointment. The tech showed up within the time frame that they said they would which is a big plus in my book. Any company that shows up late I will automaticaly drop a letter grade. The tech examined my door and said instead of roller replacement all it needed was an adjustment. So instead of the job costing me 275-300 dollars for door removal and roller replacement I was charged only 75 dollars. I love honesty in business and I think you will find it at Anderson Door and Window. Thanks!

My house was built in 1904. Jared fixed the threshold and weatherstripping of my front door. He brought with him different types of threshholds, which I could choose from. He seemed very knowledgeable about his work and explained things well. The door now closes securely, and I do not have a draft or gap under the door. Since the house was built in 1904, the floor around the door had settled a bit which made this task a little problematic, but Jared did an excellent and careful job.

Our son, who lives in a house we rent to him, asked that the bathroom door be changed to swing outward. The bathroom is very tiny, with just a shower and toilet in it, and the opening door took up all of the floor space, which made it impossible for his wheelchair-bound girlfriend to use it. I called Anderson and Diana had a tech stop by the house the next afternoon on his way home (he lives in the area) to look at what needed to be done. Two days later I called to see if they had the estimate done; Diana said the tech had not been able to meet with the senior estimator yet, but she would make sure they got together the next day. That next day, Diana emailed the bid to me. I called her and she scheduled the work to be done a week from then. I faxed the signed bid back to her. The day before the work was done, Diana called my son and she called me, to verify that the appointment would be the next day. The tech showed up on time and did a very good and quick job. The door is better than before, since it used to stick somewhat! The tech called me as soon as he was done to describe the work and get my credit card number. He left the work receipt with my son. He was very courteous and professional on the phone.
Description of Work: Changed a bathroom door to swing out instead of into the bathroom. Involved turning the casing around and rehanging the door. Also put door stoppers on the hinges so the door would not hit the wall when opened.

Homeowner picked out door hardware. Upon asking for design advice for hardware to complement door, only "that should work" was offered. It did not! The technician worked in the dark with a headlamp until 8:30 PM Friday night. He did not install the homeowner-provided screen door hardware, but a cheaper model provided by Anderson. The doors did not close without strain caused by the door handle being too large for the space between the screen and front door. The technician claimed he did not notice! How could he not? One door could close but not both. Anderson corrected the problem by having the handle cut down. Further, the door handles are off-set and not installed in the center of the stiles. I asked the technician to have Anderson send me an invoice for the final 1/3 payment as I paid 2/3 up front then waited more than a month. Instead, they charged my credit card without my authorization and did not send the final bill.
Description of Work: Provide and install new front entry door and screen door.

Response from ANDERSON DOOR & WINDOW MECHANICS INC
We had hoped this client would reconsider their comments and retract the false and exaggerated information, but alas, they have not. That is why we have waited five months to respond to this post. It is our hope, after reviewing our customer reports on this website over the years, that it will be clearly obvious that this report is in error and untrue. Although we did have some challenges on this job, we invested many "unpaid hours" and provided product and service at no additional charge in an attempt to satisfy this client. They failed to mention this and how long we waited to get paid the balance in their report. Furthermore, we never run a credit card without permission from the client and until the job is complete. This is simply not true. In addition, this client's report hardly does justice to how many phone calls and communications we made during the resolution process. We were never afforded the opportunity to address the "supposed" problems the client claims still exist prior to this post. We hope our 21 years of service to the community, our excellent record with the builders board and the remainder of these reports will speak for themselves.

Dave explained everything before he started and cleaned up not only all the sawdust but also other foam I had stuck to the door sill. He also removed the old weather stripping so carefully that I was able to reuse it elsewhere. He answered questions for me about how I could adjust the storm door for better wind resistance, even though the storm door was outside his scope of work for the day. Fixing both interior doors was time consuming, but as Dave explained, he wanted to do the work to a standard he would want in his own house. What more could a customer ask?
Description of Work: Dave came out to correct the poor fit and breezy gaps of my front door and the self-closing behavior of two interior doors. Fixing the front door required removing it completely to replane one edge, replacing the incorrect weather stripping that I had applied, and changing the door sweep.
